Downtown Drumheller invites residents to garage salePatrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Downtown Drumheller is inviting resident shoppers and sellers to the core this Saturday for a garage sale. There will be bargains galore on the street and in the stores. Mike Todor of Downtown Drumheller explains all residents are wel-come to set up to sell their wares and to do a little shopping.

“We are not charging for space, so we wel-come everyone to come down and bring stuff that is lurking in the far corner of the base-ment that another member of the community might treasure forever,” he said. While this is a great chance for residents to get out and shop, or to sell off some hid-den treasures, it is also a chance to revisit the core. “Our goal is to get people downtown so they can see that the stores are full and there

is a lot of interesting stuff here,” said Todor. He adds that working in tandem is a great strategy, that way one can man the table while the other shops. Set-up is slated for 9 a.m., and the sale will open at 10 a.m. “The sale will last as long as everyone is prepared to stay and then they can visit a local establishment for refreshments,” said Todor.

Hundreds witness RCMP Musical Ride

Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller was treated to one of Canada’s most prized and iconic national trea-sures Wednesday when the RCMP Musical Ride made a stop at the Stampede Grounds. The ride was performed twice on Wednesday, Au-gust 11 to more than 2,000 in total. A tradition to the Musical Ride is to honour an outstanding citizen. At the Drumheller Show, long-time Drumheller business-man John Kohut Sr. was giv-en the honour of signalling the show to begin. The elegant display of the Mountie red through eques-trian riding skill is a full time job for the proud few selected to take the tradi-tion cross-country. Constable Sandi Farkas, 38, has ridden her horse Venus, 9, since being cho-sen for the full-time job two years ago. “It’s a wonderful experi-ence,” said Farkas prior to

Wednesday’s 2 p.m. show. “It is one of the few Cana-dian icons, I’m proud and honoured to be able to ride.” The Mounties who rode this week are the same who ride across the country. These men, women, and horses train for months for the event. After a 5-week basic course, about 32 talented riders are weeded out of the nearly 300 that tryout for the prestigious position. They then spend months practising intricate maneu-

vers and cavalry drills such as the turnstile, the charge, and the dome, which was featured on old $50 bills. The black thoroughbred Hanoverian horses are se-lected for their size, colour, and temperament. The horses are bred in Ot-tawa for ceremonial purpos-es, and join the ride at the age of 6. The oldest horse still in the show is Hector, now 21 years of age. Farkas, now on her last year of three with the ride, says she is lucky to be riding

Venus, a gentle horse with a good temperament. “I’m sure going to miss her,” she says as she gives her horse a kiss on the face. “Even though they are big, they are loving animals.” “Riding on Canada Day in Ottawa,” Farkas reminisces, “was the most amazing feel-ing.” “Its a great gig,” to be able to work so closely with the horse and her fellow riders, she says. On Tuesday night, lo-cals were able to go visit the horses and riders to ask questions. Two shows were held Wednesday, one at 2 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m. This was the first time the RCMP Musical Ride had graced Drumheller. “It’s an amazing way to see the country,” Farkas says. “Communities are so wel-coming.” The 2010 Musical Ride set off from Quebec in June, and will continue until mid-October when the horses, and riders, get a well earned break before beginning training for next season’s ride in January. Encana supported Wednesday's Ride. The Ride benefitted Big Coun-try Victim Services and the Drumheller Stampede and Ag. Society.

The Canadian government has been providing

condoms to inmates in federal prisons?”

Jason Cox“Let the inmates decide, they give them soap don’t they?”

While the Encana team at the Drumheller and District Cham-ber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament claimed the trophy, area young people are the real winners. While the total is unoffi cial, Shari Christensen of the Drum-heller and District Chamber of Commerce expects the tourna-ment raised about $10,000 for area projects involving young people at the tournament on Friday, August 6.

C h r i s t e n s e n the said the event went off without a hitch. Th e Encana team of Duane Bolin, Vince Lowe, Shera Leek-ing and Mark Staff ort won the tournament. Th e event also in-cluded a dinner of roast pig, and a live auction. Special guests included MLA and Minister of Agriculture Jack Hayden, broadcaster Darryl Janz and Jimmy Hughes. Former Calgary Flames Trainer Bearcat Murray,

who according to Christensen was again entertaining at the auction, was also on hand. Th e funds from the golf tour-nament are destined to the East Coulee Playground Project and the Drumheller Gymnastics Club. Christensen explains the funds also support two bursa-ries for Drumheller Composite High School and St. Anthony’s School. In addition, the funds sponsor an area youngster to attend the Alberta Youth Entre-preneurship Camp. Th is year’s participant is Alana Augart. Th is was the 15th annual Drumheller and District Cham-ber of Commerce Golf Tourna-ment.

Chips with Salsaa little spicy

but always welcomeby C. Aiello

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. I don’t know to whom that is attributable, but I’m going to apply it to the spectacular sunsets we have had recently. When there is cloud, there are fabulous shades of red, pink, gold and purple. When the sky is cloudless, we get a blazing orange-red bell that is really something to look at, and you can actually look, as it isn’t so bright that it singes your retinas. So, how do the meat and the poison work into this? Well, we are get-ting all these wonderful sunsets at the expense of BC’s forests. Hundreds of thousands of hectares of BC forest are on fi re. It’s hell and it’s tragic, but all that smoke produces a very nice sunset. Th eir poison is our meat. Alright, it’s a poor analogy.

All those who thought this old world would last forever, raise your hands. More than I thought, but really, think about it. If you believe sci-ence, the earth is already millions of years old. How much older can we really expect it to get? Are we putting wrinkles on the face of old Mother Earth? Of course we are, there are over 6 billion of us, and we are all, in some way, contributing to the aging process. But what is the expiration date of this planet, and who set it? At what point will it no longer support us, and do we have a say? Who knows? I don’t know. Nobody knows. Only God knows and He’s not telling. It’s like the irresponsible physician who tells his sick patient that he only has a year to live. Nice try Doc, but you don’t get to make that call. You can’t make that call, because that one God reserves for Himself. Man is a pretty powerful, intelligent creature, who can do a great many things, including end a life. Th e one thing man can’t do is create life. God re-serves that to Himself. In fact, He saves most of the big ones for Himself. Oh we might think we’re doing something, and it may seem as though we are, but really, who can stop a hurricane, or a volcano? Man? Ha! It’s a little arrogant to think we can stop climate change. Really, isn’t it?

It was festive while it lasted, and tomorrow is the “family” party for Pop, but the odometer actually rolled over to triple digits on Wednes-day. Good thing too, because Pop is pooped. His younger self could party hard, and for 100, I suppose he carries his load, it’s just that his load is a fraction of what it used to be. I’d really like to thank everyone who feted Pop over the few weeks, in whatever manner. He is overwhelmed, and he really appreciates that so many people care about him and have not forgotten him. Th ank you all.

New business: Who wants a fall election be it provincial or federal? No one really wants an election, but for all the times we haven’t wanted one, how many times did we get one? To politicians, an election is a battle, and we become the unwilling combatants and fl eeing refugees. Whatever happened to fi xed dates and term limits? Now there are two issues for the next election.

The world’s second largest proven resource of oil. Responsible.

There never was a better time for us to tell the world about our oil sands. Our energy. Ourselves. It’s up to us, as proud Albertans, to tell it like it is. The fact of the matter is, the Alberta government has strict regulations in place to protect the land, the water and the people. We supervise and strictly limit water use, monitor air quality 24/7 and require by law that any land used for tailings ponds be returned to a productive state. Because it’s the right thing to do. For our province and our planet. The world should know the facts. Start a conversation today. For more to talk about visit oilsands.alberta.ca.

Th ere are big expectations for the Drumheller Senior Ti-tans, and they are all itching to prove they are up for the chal-lenge. Registration night is Sunday August 15 at coach Jason Ras-mussen’s classroom at 7 p.m., and right way Monday, prac-tice begins. “Th e anticipation and ex-citement within our organiza-tion for this coming season is at an all time high,” said Ras-mussen. “We have high hopes for ourselves, we truly be-lieve this is going to be a very good season for us. All of us - coaches, players - want to get on the fi eld and prove to our-selves the hype we have fallen to isn’t overly optimistic…and we start putting wins up on the board.” Th e team will fi nish off the week in practice and then next week they will be fl ying to San Diego for a football experi-ence of a lifetime. Th e team will be south from August 24 to August 29. Th e team will be taking part

in one game while they are in San Diego, as well as many practice sessions and football

activities. Th ey will also get the chance to see the calibre at which high school football can be played. As coach Jason Rasmussen is not heading to San Diego, Ken Fournier will be taking on head coach du-ties. “It is expected to be a learn-ing experience and a motivat-ing experience for the players from Drumheller to go down

there to see how football is a culture to itself in the United States,” he said. “We’re hoping

that when the team returns from this trip to San Diego, they are ready, in mid-season forum and we hit the ground running going into the regular season.” Th e fi rst game of the sea-son in Alberta will be against a new school team in Leth-bridge on Friday, September 3. Chinook School will be

commencing its fi rst school year this fall. Rasmussen be-friended the head coach of

its program when he was ap-pointed to the coaching staff for Football Alberta’s Senior Bowl. “He called me up with his new program and said he was looking for an exhibition game, and it just works out we’ll get to play a Friday night game under the lights in a new stadium just off the University of Lethbridge Campus,” said

Rasmussen. “We’re looking forward to it, that will be a great experience. “Th e exhibition experience in San Diego, combined with the exhibition game on Sep-tember 3, will give our guys a lot of playing experience and game experience going into our fi rst league game on Sep-tember 11, which we play in Strathmore.” Last year the young Titans were thwarted by Rundle Academy of Calgary on the road to provincials. “Th is season won’t be with-out its challenges and hard-ships along the way. Rundle I am sure will be good again, and other teams have shown signifi cant improvements lately,” said Rasmussen. “Th e fact of the matter is our league, the Big Sky Conference is the strongest Tier 4 league in the province. Th e competition within the league is defi nitely stiff , and whoever comes out of it as league champions has a good chance of making it to the provincial fi nal.”

Registration for Senior Titans is Sunday, August 15 at 7 p.m and practice begins right away Monday. The next week the team will be off to San Diego before the regular season begins.

Butterfl y doorsfl own from Japan

Ajay Pal Singh’s ride is certainly a head turner, especially when he’s getting in and out. People notice the driver on the right hand side of the car. They also notice the butterfl y doors reaching to the sky. While he purchased this unique 1992 Toyota Sera at a dealership in Calgary about three years ago, the Sera was produced solely for a Japanese market. The Sera is of a steel monocoque construction powered by a miserly 1.5 litre four cylinder engine. The car is light enough that a man acting on a wager a few years ago picked Singh’s car off the ground.

It’s 6:30 in the morning and the sun is just starting to stretch out over the horizon. Here you stand atop a cliff marveling at majestic hoodoos millions of years in the making, a glint of dew marbling off the brush nearby and the sound of native swallows echoing in the dis-tance. Th e light seems to cascade through what was once a bus-tling river valley and in the distance you see a fox traipsing across this breathtaking tapes-try. In the Canadian Badlands, moments like these are easy to fi nd. Filled with modern, historic and prehistoric wonders, pho-tographers have plenty of op-tions in the Canadian Badlands when searching for their next composition. Th at’s why the Badlands www.canadianbad-lands.com) has a photography tour to help you along the way. Naturally, there’s plenty of unique geography thanks to the exposed layers of sediment in Dinosaur Provincial Park. But there’s so much else out there! From the Dry Island Buf-falo Jump north of Th ree Hills to the meandering Milk River near the Alberta-Montana bor-der, the Canadian Badlands has plenty of opportunities for shutterbugs of all experience levels to capture some magical moments. Did you know the Badlands

are one of the sunniest regions in Canada? Th at means more light and more hours of op-portunity to capture something magnifi cent. All those extra rays also mean you’ll have an easier time stopping the action of antelope running across the prairie, a Golden Hawk soaring overhead or whatever else you need a high shutter speed for. Nature is obviously a huge part of the photographic pos-sibilities, but don’t forget the people and the places you’ll come across either. Whether it’s a smiling face in Drumheller or the impressive architecture of Lethbridge’s High Level Bridge, you’re only limited by your imagination – but don’t count out the inspiration you’re bound to encounter either. Look out across the brilliant fi elds of wheat, corn and canola in all their shades of yellow and green and brown, but try some diff erent angles too. Look up at the 20-story-tall Saamis Tee-pee in Medicine Hat or down

into the blossom of a cactus. No matter which angle you take you’re bound to fi nd something you hadn’t considered before. To fi nd the Badlands photog-raphy tours go to www.canadi-anbadlands.com and click on Touring Routes, then Activity Tours. You’ll fi nd tips, discover new places and look at ones you already know in a whole new light. After such a busy day, don’t forget you still have the sunset. Might want to dial down your shutter speed – you’ve been ex-posed to a lot today. For more information, visit www.canadianbadlands.com and or TravelAlberta.com.

Th e Dorothy Churches are go-ing to have a better and brighter look in the near future, but Betty Faubion of the Grassroots of Dor-othy chuckles they won’t be sacri-fi cing the church’s character. “Even if you break your back, you’re not going to walk straight,” she laughs. Th e community group has made great strides in reviving the churches over the last few years to save them from crumbling to the ground, and while they are looking better than ever, the goal was never to restore the church-es. Th eir plan is to make sure they last so another generation can enjoy the solitary sentinels on the east end of the valley. Th is summer they are looking at painting the churches. Th ey

will start painting the interior of the United Church as soon as next week. Th ey are also looking at painting the exteriors this sea-son. Th e churches have come a long way to be at this point in just a few short seasons. Th e churches have been completely cleaned out, structural repairs have taken place and the roofs have been re-shingled to keep the weather out. Doors and custom made windows that match the originals have also been installed. Last summer the interior of the United Church was stuccoed, and Ray Faubion and his grandson were putting the casings in place this week for it to receive a fresh coat of paint. Since the renovations, Betty has seen an increase in traffi c from locals and visitors coming to see the historic churches. “Th ere are lots of people there.

Th ere is hardly a time that I look out the window and don’t see people there,” said Betty who lives beside the church site. “More and more, people are discover-ing what a beautiful drive it is out here. Especially this year because it is still green, which is really a miracle, especially for this coun-try.” Th e project is not complete yet. She said that inmates at the Drumheller Institution used the original alter from the Catholic Church as a template to construct a new alter. “It’s sitting in the hall waiting to go in its home in the front of the church, and it’s beautiful, they do wonderful work,” she said. Th ey also have the materials in place, thanks to a grant from Special Areas, to redo the ceilings and fl oor of the Catholic Church.

The Grassroots of Dorothy community group continue to work on reviving the Dorothy Churches for future

generations to enjoy. This summer they are painting the landmarks.

If you can imagine playing Rockband on a 35-foot screen, you can imagine Geek Out 2010. After a year’s hiatus, the 2010 gaming competition hosted by Reality Bytes is back for its second event. Th e event is slated for Monday, Septem-ber 6, the Labour Day holi-day, at the Napier Th eatre. “Th e Napier was the most logical choice now that they have a digital projector,” says event organizer John Shoff . Reality Bytes hosted the tourney two years ago, and hope they can keep it an an-nual event from now on. “We wanted to give back to the commu-nity, it’s something that not only teenagers can do but adults too,” says Shoff . Th e tournament game will be Rockband 2, played out on the biggest of screens in Drumheller. Organizers are looking for 15 bands to sign up for the main event. A band consists of three or four people. All instruments must be covered (ie. two guitars, drums and vocals.

It will be a knock-out competition where the top 10 teams will advance, and then the fi eld will be whittled down to six, four, and then the fi nal. Th e winner will receive a cash prize sponsored by Reality Bytes. About 60 people attended the last Geek Out in 2008. Th e past event featured single competitors lighting up the screen in Gui-tar Hero, but with Rockband 2 as the game

of choice, Shoff believes it will be more fun to have a team of four competing for best cyber band in Drum-heller. Along with the Rockband tournament the event will include the Reality Bytes Olympics including the ever popular Chassis Toss.

Shoff says people are encouraged to dress as their favourite rock band, with prizes for the most fl ashy. Th is year they will not be hosting the popular LAN party during Geek Out, but are looking at staging a separate event in the future. Th ere is no entry fee or age limit for the contests so it is expected it to fi ll up quick-ly. To sign up go to www.realitybytesinc.com and follow the Geek Out 2010 link to register.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, a little luck and a whole lot of hard work will get you the prize you desire. Expect this week to be a les-son in determination. But take the time for a little fun, too.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, gather all the facts before making an important decision. The answer you are seeking is a little further away than you may have thought.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, look before you leap be-cause the water may be more shal-low than you thought. That means you have to give more consideration to your choices this week.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, there's not much you touch this week that won't work to your advantage. Enjoy your string of good fortune and accomplish every thing that needs to get done.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, familial obligations take you away from other things that you want to get done. But stay focused and remember there will be time for fun later.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, instead of projecting negative energy, start thinking in a positive way and things may turn around for you. Thursday proves to be a tumul-tuous day.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Someone close to you may need a little extra affection this week, Libra. That's because he or she is going through a rough spot. You will know what to say to calm nerves.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, you can't help but jump to conclusions and get your feathers ruffl ed. But it's better to get all of the details sorted out so that you can look at the facts.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you may not have the right words but you certainly get your point across when someone asks for your opinion on fi nancial matters. Stand by your advice this week.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Things that seem insurmountable are much more manageable than you fi rst thought, Capricorn. It's all about the angle at which you look at things.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, your initial perception may not be correct. It's important to trust your instincts, but it's also good to get all the information you need.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, it will take a little time for you to get the bounce back in your step. Once you do, you'll be back to normal.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are for-matted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can ap-pear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Annual Shuswap Cook-o This year, we held a dessert cook-o amongst our cabin neighbours on Lake Shuswap. As with the chili cook-o , there was an amazing variety of ideas.Three prizes were awarded but the “coveted trophy” went to the best overall taste. Desserts were judged on appearance, name and taste. Some of the entries included “Bear Bait” bars, ice cream cookie sandwich treats from the “Bushman’s Bakery,” the “Little Cabin on the Shuswap,” “Kahlukies and Cream” pudding shooters, and even a “What the heck can I call it?” cake. The winner, generously sharing their recipe, follows:

“Huckleberry Finn Blueberry Bliss”

(For the cook-o , the  topping was a combination of blueberries plus huckleberries that were picked out at the cabin) This original recipe includes two topping ideas.

Green thumb, yellow sun, blue pillLong time Drumheller resident Barry Killaby, who now resides at HooDoo RV Resort, has certainly found the secret to growing sunfl owers. This year he was able to create a shade break from the fl ow-ers that appear to double his height. His secret, he

chuckles, is a certain ‘little blue pill.’ It’s that time of year where gardens come into full bloom, and inSide Drumheller is always interested in seeing reader’s garden creations.

Residents and tourists have been keeping staff at the Drumheller Joey’s Restaurant busy since opening night on July 7, 2010, cod and chips be-ing a popular item from their menu. Now that things are settling down, owner Kul-want Nijjer is keen to listen to customers’ feed-

back. He told inSide Drumheller the facility is more of a Joey’s express and most people seem happy with this; however, Nijjer is taking advice about turning it into a sit down restaurant. “I have been taking advice from people and seeing if people would like that, it won’t be that hard to change. Th en we would expand our kitchen a little bit more and off er a bigger menu selec-

tion.” Nijjer said they have decided not to open a drive-thru as he felt it would slow the service down. He told inSide Drumheller that he has just applied for a license to be able to sell beer, wine and coolers, and is hoping to be approved in the next six weeks.
