‘Run, walk or push against dementia’ is taking place in Knole Park on the morning of Sunday 14 May to raise money for local dementia services.

With timed routes of 3, 5 and 10 kilometres on offer, this event is perfect for families and beginners, through to seasoned runners.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll receive a voucher offering a 10% discount in the ‘Up and Running’ shop in Sevenoaks High Street. You can also take advantage of free, professionally led running classes by Sevenoaks Ladies Joggers and Oaks Blokes as you prepare for the

event. You’ll even be presented with a commemorative medal when you cross the finishing line!

Registration for the 3k and 5k runs is £10 for people aged 16 and older and £5 for under 16s. Both distances are suitable for beginners, children and people with pushchairs. Under 4s go free.

Registration for the 10k run is £15. This run is for seasoned runners and is not open to under 16s or people with pushchairs.

Higher prices will apply after 7 May.

All money raised from the event will go to the Sevenoaks Area Community Dementia Forum.

The 10k run will begin at 10am, the 5k run will start at 10.15am and the 3k run will begin at 10.30am.

Registration is open now at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/runwalkpush. Alternatively, call 01732 227000 for a registration form.

Cllr Michelle Lowe, Sevenoaks District Council’s Cabinet Member for health, says: “With three distances on offer, families who are new to running right through to experienced runners can enjoy this event, with the added bonus of the stunning backdrop of Knole Park, Kent’s only remaining ancient deer park.”

“But with only 500 places available, I’d advise runners to be quick off the mark.”

“Dementia is now one of the leading causes of death in the UK. But this event gives residents an opportunity to raise money for people affected by the disease while improving their own health.”

Will you go the extra mile to defeat dementia? You are invited to put on your running shoes and sign up to a new charity run taking place in Sevenoaks.

Please keep your collectors safeYour refuse collectors take pride in providing an excellent weekly service.

But from time to time they suffer serious cuts, as some residents leave sharp, dangerous items in their sacks. These injuries may require stitches and can result in our staff being unable to work. So please think of their safety when disposing of sharp objects. You can keep your collectors safe by following our advice:

• Put broken glass, ceramics or sharp metal objects in a sealed container (such as an ice cream tub) clearly marked next to your sacks on your collection day

• Knives, scissors and other sharp metal objects can also be taken to a Kent County Council Household Waste Centre (also known as the tip)

• We collect syringes and EpiPens in sharps boxes, provided by your chemist, once you’ve arranged a collection with us. Never put them in your sacks.

For further advice, call us on 01732 227000.

Improving Wellbeing through Care at Home

Our professional carers provide highly trained, person-centred care at home, enabling loved ones to stay independent and continue a full life in their community, whilst enjoying companionship and secure support.

We understand it can be difficult for elderly people and families to make the right care choice, especially at a time of crisis. But the cost of care at home is now comparable to that of residential care, making it a viable option for all.

97% of older people want to stay in their homes1, preferring the freedom to make independent decisions and continue to live life as they want, rather than lose their control and choice in a care home. Evidence shows live-in care has significant benefits over residential care:

• Improved sense of wellbeing from higher quality of life at home • Reduction in falls

Our small teams of carers, all employed and trained by us, form real relationships with our clients. This ensures your loved one has companions who understand their individual needs, support them in everything from household tasks to medication, and promote their sense of self.

It is also designed to be innovative and kind to the environment with smart LED lighting that dims down during off peak periods, only working on full power when movement is detected.

Finally, the car park has been designed to Parkmark Secure Car Park Safer Parking standards and benefits from CCTV coverage.

The Sevenoaks Kent Shed project has made 20 bat box roosts, which will be fixed to trees on Council land including car parks, woods and open spaces under guidance from the Kent Bat Group.

The small wooden boxes, all recycled from waste materials, could eventually become home to 40 or more of the small, virtually blind, flying mammals.

The roosts will provide a place for the bats to live and breed during the warmer lighter months and a place to hibernate during the winter.

Going batty for wildlifeCouncil owned land could become a haven for wildlife with the introduction of bat boxes.

We are lucky enough to have 18 species of bat living in the UK, that's almost a quarter of our indigenous mammal species. But sadly, bat populations have suffered during the past century as they are losing their habitat.

The Sevenoaks Kent Shed, which built the boxes, makes and repairs a variety

of things for the community. Its members meet every Tuesday at 10am at the Abacus Furniture Warehouse, Greatness Lane, Sevenoaks.

If you’d like to get involved in the Shed, please call us on 01732 227000 or email communities@ sevenoaks.gov.uk

The six bedroom home in Eynsford has been adapted for people with disabilities but the landlord, West Kent, has been unable to find a suitable family as there is currently no local need for a property of this size.

West Kent had considered splitting the property into smaller homes, but this option was too expensive. They had also considered selling the home, but there was no guarantee the money would have been reinvested in the Sevenoaks District.

Cllr Michelle Lowe, our Cabinet member for housing, says: “I firmly

Supporting Syrian refugeesIn March we agreed to resettle a Syrian refugee family in the Sevenoaks District after we identified a property that has been vacant for more than a year.

believe helping a Syrian family settle in the District is a good outcome for everyone. We will help a refugee family escape from a terrible situation. At the same time we will keep a social rented home in public hands that otherwise could have been sold and would no longer be available through the Housing Register."

We are keen to hear from local landlords who would consider making property available to a Syrian refugee family. Call us on 01732 227000 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

Following the EU referendum last year, there was concern whether businesses could still apply for LEADER money, which comes down from the European Union via the Government body Defra.

But Defra has confirmed businesses and communities in rural West Kent will continue to have access to this important source of funding.

Grants are available for rural small businesses, farmers, foresters and communities to help fund capital projects that create jobs and grow the rural economy.

So far, 12 projects in West Kent are benefitting from LEADER funding creating 18 jobs in the process. These include a village community shop, irrigation equipment for soft fruit

The Government has confirmed that LEADER funding, worth nearly £1.5 million, will continue to be available to West Kent businesses to help them develop and grow.

Jim was volunteering with the Premises and Archaeology Team at Knole House when he made the discovery. The team were working in one of the attics at the 600-year-old National Trust property when Jim spotted the relics and earned himself a new nickname.

He says: "I was very excited to see some pieces of paper hidden underneath some rush matting. The first piece was folded and very dusty. We realised it was a letter and there was writing on it which looked like a seventeenth century hand. I was nicknamed ‘Jimdiana Jones’ after that!”

The letters dated from May 1603 and October 1633 with the latter one being a request for items to be sent from Copt Hall in Essex to Knole, the result of the marriage between Frances Cranfield, daughter of the Earl of Middlesex who owned Copt Hall, to Richard Sackville the 5th Earl of Dorset and owner of Knole.

These fascinating documents aren’t the only 17th century letters to have been found during the on-going five-year Heritage Lottery-Funded building and conservation project. A third letter, this one from 1622, was found in another attic by building contractor Dan Morrison.

All three letters were written on rag paper, a high-quality popular parchment, and shed light on domestic life in the 17th century.

Nathalie Cohen, National Trust Archaeologist, adds: "At Knole our typical finds relate to the maintenance of the house such as

wiring and nails or things visitors have dropped such as cigarette packets and ticket stubs. These letters are significant as artefacts but also for the insights they give us into the correspondence of the early seventeenth century."

The letters have been carefully restored and are now on display at the Visitor Centre at Knole which is free to enter and open 10am to 4pm seven days a week.

The collection at Copt Hall was moved to Knole during the early eighteenth century and forms a substantial part of the collection now in its showrooms.

In addition to the house, you can explore Knole Park, the county’s last medieval deer park, with a wild herd of over 350 deer.

A glimpse into the past at KnoleIt’s not unusual to find a little relic of the past when you’re redecorating. It can be thrilling to find a newspaper article about a long-forgotten event. But you’ll have to scale that feeling up a few times to understand how Jim Parker felt when he found some letters under the floorboards – as the papers he found had not been seen for 400 years.

STEP 1: Decide what motivates you and what you enjoy – it could be a group class, using weights or being outdoors. And remind yourself regularly of why you started, whether that was to feel fitter, lose weight, tone-up or simply have some “me” time.

STEP 2: Get a professional to devise a plan for you and ask them to help you track your progress.

STEP 3: Get a gym buddy. You are more likely to stick to exercise when you can motivate each other.

STEP 4: Don’t expect miracles and be realistic. Start with gentle sessions of 20 to 30 minutes and build up.

STEP 5: Diets rarely work! If weight loss is your goal and you want to get ready for summer – start now and eat a well-balanced range of foods and drink plenty of water.

STEP 6: Aim for at least three sessions a week – and remember even a 15-minute brisk walk or getting off the bus a stop earlier can really help.

STEP 7: Don’t be scared of using gym weights. The benefits include making your bones stronger, toning the body and aiding inch loss.

Physically, socially and mentally, White Oak’s feel good suite is a winnerSince taking delivery of 12 new pieces of exercise equipment last year, White Oak Leisure Centre has made a difference to the lives of around 120 people.

The Feel Good suite at the Swanley facility has helped a range of users from a 13-year-old with Cerebral Palsy to an 88-year-old double hip replacement patient.

Since opening its doors, the suite has won many devoted fans, including Gillian Dridge (66) from Hextable, who says: “I saw the advertisement, did a free seven-day trial and loved it. It has really helped with my type-two Diabetes. My HbA1c level has reduced and, along with swimming, so has my weight. The staff are absolutely lovely - always friendly and helpful and it also makes for a great social experience.”

Sylvia Searles (62) from Swanley came to Feel Good to improve her fitness but also to broaden her social circle: “The place is fantastic. It’s really welcoming with a great atmosphere. Everyone is chatty and we have a good laugh. I come here five times a week and go swimming and I definitely feel the benefits, physically, mentally and socially.”

White Oak is now keen to encourage local groups to try the facilities by attending free “taster” sessions with a view to addressing specific needs and eventually providing exclusive use during quieter periods.

“These machines offer low impact exercise for those with medical conditions or mobility problems,” says instructor Liane Brown. “Unlike some routines that strain the body these are biomechanically matched to it, offering an all-round programme that is kinder to joints and muscles. And we’re also the perfect place for people who hate gyms!”

Neighbourhood disputes are a sad fact of life. Noise or a minor property problem can quickly snowball into harassment, anti-social and even abusive behaviour. You only need to look at primetime television to see the raft of programmes devoted to the subject. For those involved, a neighbourhood dispute can take over their lives. It can lead to depression, anxiety and a complete loss to know what to do next.

Problems are made worse as communication between people breaks down, escalating bad feelings and creating even greater problems. People who find themselves in such conflicts often spend time and money seeking legal advice and going through the court system. But mediation can be a more effective approach.

The good news is help is at hand in the form of West Kent Mediation. Their trained volunteers can bridge the gap between warring neighbours, starting a conversation and building trust. In most cases, given time, this leads to an agreement that benefits everyone.

West Kent Mediation was founded in 1996. Initial funding was provided by Sevenoaks District Council and West Kent Housing Association with contributions from West Kent Tenants’ Association, Kent Police and local town and parish councils in the Sevenoaks

District. Sevenoaks District Council continues to fund them today.

The service proved to be such a success that just three years later it was expanded to cover the whole of Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge & Malling Boroughs.

West Kent Mediation CEO, Amanda Bell, says “We offer a free, confidential, impartial mediation service to all those trying to cope with neighbourhood problems, across the West Kent area and a specialised service to help better communication

between parents and their teenage children. We also offer restorative justice, homeless and workplace mediation and restorative practices within schools.

“Over the last 20 years we have helped thousands of troubled people resolve problems through the mediation process. We have an excellent success rate and if all those involved in mediation want it to work, then life can be made a lot easier”.

Sevenoaks District Council funded the Stag Youth Theatre to write and produce the ‘Real Life’ play, which covered topics such as sexting, cyber bullying and talking to strangers online.

The production also focused on educating children about the risks of sharing intimate pictures via phone after reports found almost half of 13 to 17 year olds said they had seen nude pictures of someone they know being shared around their school or community.

Live production educates pupils on Safer Internet Day

West Kent Mediation marks two decades of bringing people together

Over 800 year five and six pupils in the District watched a live production at the Stag Theatre as part of Safer Internet Day on 7 February to help them stay safe on the Internet and on social media.

E-safety is about good parenting not just technology. The same parenting skills apply online as they do offline – so don't let the Internet scare you into not protecting your children.

If your child sees something unsuitable it’s best to get them to tell you. If they’re punished by removing Internet access, it can result in your children being afraid to confide in you.

Your child should never tell strangers where they live, their phone number or where they go to school, online. Only friends and family should know this.

It’s advisable to use a nickname (sometimes known as a username or handle) online so people who chat to and play games with your child don't know their real name.

Your child should never share pictures with people they do not know.

Many things put online may remain accessible for years to come. Sometimes known as a digital footprint, this applies to social networking. Information could be seen by prospective colleges, universities or even employers.

Finally, install and set parental controls and make sure you have good antivirus, firewall and anti-spyware on your devices and ensure they are kept up to date.

The Stag Youth Theatre put on two powerful 50 minute performances by their talented cast aged 11 to 14 years old.

Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally and aims to raise awareness of staying safe online, as well as providing advice and support to children, parents, carers and schools.

Kent County Council is responsible for many local services, including roads and pavements, schools, libraries, social and care services, buses, the tip and more.

It has 81 councillors and residents in the Sevenoaks District will elect six of them.

These elections take place every four years. Poll cards indicating where and when to vote will be sent out before the election.

With County Council elections taking place on Thursday 4 May, residents are being urged not to miss out on having a say about who should run Kent’s services.

Election time! Are you on the electoral register? You can only vote if your name appears on the electoral register. You can apply quickly and easily at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or you can request a registration form by calling us on 01732 227000. The deadline to register to vote for this election is 13 April.

The Guardian Awards are recognised as the gold standard for organisations that deliver outstanding services in the public and charity sector.

At a ceremony in London on 29 November, we picked up the Finance award, for our work to become financially self sufficient, and the prestigious ‘Overall Winner’ award.

The Guardian judges were impressed we had become England’s first financially self-sufficient local authority, despite unprecedented public sector cuts threatening the future of our services.

The achievement was in part thanks to the income generated from our property investments. These include a convenience store and petrol station and an office block. We have just built a decked car park and will begin

Sevenoaks scoops highest honour in public sector awardsSevenoaks District Council took the top spot at the recent Guardian Public Service Awards.

Cllr Peter Fleming, Council Leader, and Dr Pav Ramewal, Chief Executive, proudly show off the Council’s Guardian award trophies

construction on a hotel in the summer. More recently we purchased another office block in Sevenoaks and an office and shop complex in Sevenoaks High Street.

This income comes at a time when our support grant from Government ceased from 1 April 2017.

David Brindle, the Guardian’s public services editor and co-chair of the judging panel, says: “Sevenoaks has blazed a trail for all of English local government. Ministers plan to phase out central grants by the end of the decade, but the detail is still being thrashed out.

“While others haggle over the numbers, Sevenoaks has picked up the ball and run with it. What it has achieved has taken vision, initiative and nerves of steel at a time of unprecedented uncertainty for town halls.”
