INNOVATORS IN DIGITAL HEALTH
MULTI AWARD WINNINGSOCIAL IMPACT BUSINESS
FOCUSED ON HEALTHCAREINNOVATION
We are an experienced team of healthcare focused professionals, engineers and creatives backed by a world class board of front line medics, administrators, entrepreneurs and investors.
We founded Ampersand & Ampersand in 2016 to co-create digital platforms with innovators in healthcare. We are a social impact business, which means that in addition to the normal (commercial) measures of success, we measure success by quantifying the practical benefits our work brings to patients and healthcare providers.
We have co-created various product suites - focused on human capital management and chronic care management - that can be licensed and whitelabeled for individual hospitals and Trusts.
We are collaborators with values, committed to research and development, to finding better answers, to blending rigour with magic to accelerate strategic innovation and create stand-out products for our clients.
- Consultant Rheumatologist, Kings College NHSFT
“Nearly a quarter of our patientshave downloaded the app. It has become a standard tool in clinic to signpost patients to clinical services.”
- Gastroenterology Lead, Barts Hospital, Royal London NHSFT
“The product has been really well received… A TESTAMENT TO YOUR excellent work.”
- Founder & CEO, United Medicine
“All of us are very excited to be workingwith Ampersand TO achieve the lofty aims we have set.”
Ampersand is an award winning provider of healthcare technology to the NHS, with happy customers and strong references. We partner with clinical innovators who view technology as an enabler of better healthcare.
We specialise in enterprise SAAS for doctors, patients and hospital staff, that sits alongside cumbersome internal IT (rather than being deeply integrated) to improve communication and medical outcomes.
WHAT WE DO
“The ultimate goal of any clinically-focused IT initiative is to improve patient care, and mobile technologies can definitely deliver on that promise.”
- Ken Congdon, Editor in Chief, Health IT Outcomes
In the UK, interest in mobile health - from patients, healthcare providers and carers - has never been greater. However, mHealth is still in the early stages of adoption and the potential for smartphones, connected medical accessories and apps that deliver a more personal patient experience and better outcomes continue to be hugely unexploited across the healthcare industry.
The opportunity for technology to revolutionise the future of healthcare should not be underestimated. Ampersand & Ampersand understands the enormous benefit that the digitisation of healthcare will bring and is heavily invested in driving such development forward.
DIGITISING HEALTHCARE
We see four major trends in digital health: connected devices and mobile applications that improve patients’ ability to self manage and strive for wellness; clinical SAAS, giving doctors new tools to remotely monitor and intervene in patients’ health; the explosion in data, enabling the development of more personalised healthcare; and the use of AI to power a range of new medical services.
Ampersand has exposure to all these trends and is widely cited and recognised for its work:

Digital health promisesto solve many of the issuesfaced by clinicians, hospitals and trusts.
For example, digital touch points can extend the patient-consultant experience beyond the hospital walls and can dramatically improve patient experience. Some of the key benefits include:
Improved clinical decision making thanks to fuller datasets
Easier access to patient records and specialist expertise
Reduction in unnecessary appointments and cancellations
Calendar integration to book appointments and push reminders
A more personalised patient experience improving patient engagement and carer-patient relations
Improved outpatient care, including self-health management, leading to better medication/treatment compliance and patient outcomes
Efficient coordination of patient treatment, and enhanced productivity rates
A reduction in patient care overheads through digital administration and data management
Strategic consulting and business case development for digital engagement
Creative services, including concept development, user experience design, visual identity and prototyping
Development of digital touchpoints for patients, clinicians, administrators and industry; including engaging mobile and web applications.

SERVICES
BENEFITSDigital health innovation is a catalyst for positive change in healthcare and is critical for the delivery of:
Revolutionising the future of evidence-based medicineUNITED MEDICINEUnited Medicine is revolutionising Evidence Based Medicine (EMB) - the practice of
placing evidence from clinical research at the heart of medicine and patient care.
UMed believes that the current volume of information is vast, the quality inconsistent
and the way it’s created and shared, outdated. The challenge is to provide
healthcare professionals with the most efficient, advanced, yet easily accessible
method of knowledge exchange.
Ampersand helped UMed develop concepts, prototypes and a combination of cloud
platforms and mobile applications that underpin the business. We explored the
psychology of gamification, testing and implementing a range of tactics to increase
user engagement and build community around the platform; and helped architect a
data strategy which, powered by Machine Learning, gives UMed users uniquely
relevant, up to date insights about their fields of interest.
United Medicine is part of the NHS’s Clinical Entrepreneur’s Programme.
Patient-Clinician engagement beyond the hospital walls
King’s College and BartsHEALTH: Clinicians at Kings College Hospital and The Royal London identified opportunities to
improve patient care and patient outcomes by developing a multi-touchpoint platform
for chronic care management. The two trusts are teaching hospitals and are amongst
the busiest in the UK.
We co-created a platform that allows patients and doctors to share data and interact
with one another in a secure manner, through mobile apps and a web portal. The
platform was developed to the highest standards in order to facilitate scale and a
rigorous approach to data management was required in order to meet strict IG
compliance.
The platform reduces bed days by facilitating early intervention, and reduces work up
time before regular appointments by allowing patients to self report their condition
regularly between appointments. Ampersand is working with KCH and Barts to deploy
the platform across the NHS.
Employee Engagement through Mobile
Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation TrustThe Human Capital Management group at Kingston Hospital wanted to develop a
solution that caters to their 3000+ staff members in a more efficient and proactive
way while reducing the cost of people management.
Ampersand worked with the Trust to co-create AskHR – a cloud-based management
system as well as an iOS and Android app that acts as a hub for the hospital’s staff.
The app is functional, easy-to-use, efficient and reduces the cost of running the HR
department. The app functionalities include tools such as an annual leave calculator,
a vacancy control panel, an emotional wellbeing toolkit, an in-app appointment
booking system, and other features that keep the staff in charge of their well being
and highly engaged with their HR department.
Ampersand is working with Kingston to commercialise the IP across the NHS.
MHealth Strategy & ConsultationThe ChristieThe Christie NHS Foundation Trust is a specialist hospital, mainly concerned with the
treatment of cancer and associated diseases. They have been pioneering cancer
research breakthroughs for over 100 years and are the largest cancer centre in
Europe. To date, the most important aspect of mhealth in oncology is to raise
awareness and educate about cancer. Mobile technology is increasingly accepted
and adoption is widespread in oncology.
We worked with the Christie’s Oncology Department trust to develop the business
case for a series of mobile-focused strategies for improving engagement with
patients at different stages of treatment. In addition to workshops with stakeholders,
we conducted surveys and interviews to identify their needs and expectations;
performed competitor analyses and identified broader market trends; and set forth a
series of actionable recommendations relating to product development and go-to-
market.
Improving Patient Outcomes
Mobile Solution forKing’s College HospitalConsultants at KCH’s Rheumatology Department sought a uniform and efficient
solution for patients to keep track of their treatment and that could be rolled out to all
RD departments across NHS Trusts nationwide. The team was looking to increase
patient engagement with the hospital and the doctors that were treating them.
Ampersand developed a simple application allowing patients to fill in information about
the state of their disease and send them back to their doctors through a secure server.
Access to resources, appointment booking, signposting and EPRs are also key features
of the system, making it extremely useful to both patients and doctors.
The app gives patients a 360 degree view of their health condition and plan. It also
guides patients throughout their treatment, reminding them of what needs to be done
next (ie. blood tests, physiotherapy, etc). After the app was launched, much in-hospital
paperwork and waiting time was eliminated with more than 40% of patients having
downloaded the app.
Gamifying CPD with the IPF Sound ChallengeBoehringer IngelheimBoehringer Ingelheim came to us with the challenge of raising awareness of BI’s
treatments for chronic lung diseases, including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
For patients with IPF, every breath counts. 80% of lungs with IPF sound like Velcro
being separated, and being able to distinguish these from other auditory markers
more readily is essential for clinicians.
The Sounds of IPF app helps doctors learn about the unique “Velcro crackles”
commonly heard in patients’ lungs. The app stores a series of recorded auscultations
of both diseased and healthy lungs. The user experience takes the format of a quiz.
Doctors listen to 4 sets of recordings and identify the sound of IPF amongst them.
After the test is over, the listener will be scored to see whether they passed the test.
We designed Android and iOS apps that fit into Boehringer Ingelheim’s multi-
channel awareness campaign. The app is promoted on all of BI IPF’s digital channels.
