Read about types of computers and underline new vocabulary then identify comparative/superlative adjectives and write sentences to apply them.
Size Characteristics Uses Super computers
The most powerful computers in terms of performance and data processing. These are specialized and task specific computers. The supercomputers are very expensive and very large in size. It can be accommodated in large air-conditioned rooms.
These computers are used for research and exploration purposes, like NASA uses supercomputers for launching space shuttles, controlling them and for space exploration purpose.
Main frames
Less powerful and less expensive than super computers. They also have a large storage capacity. Organizations use mainframes to run their business operations.
Used to handle all kinds of problems whether scientific or commercial. I.e. performing complex mathematical calculations. they are mostly found in banks, hospitals, airports etc.
Workstations
A type of computer used for engineering applications, desktop publishing, software development and other types of applications that require a moderate amount of computing power and relatively high quality graphics capabilities.
Like personal computers, most workstations are single-user computers. However, workstations are typically linked together to form a Local Area Network
Server
A computer that has been optimized to provide services to other computers over a network. Servers usually have powerful processors, large memory and hard drives.
Servers are actually personal computers that have been dedicated to provide services for other computers.
Micro computers The personal computer (PC) defines a computer designed for general use by a single person. PCs were first known as microcomputers because they were a complete computer but built on a smaller scale than the huge systems in use by most businesses. They can be desktops or laptops.
Today a personal computer is an all-around device that can be used as a productivity tool, a media server and a gaming machine. The modular construction of the personal computer allows components to be easily swapped out when broken or upgrading.
Wearables Essentially, common computer applications (e-mail, database, multimedia, and calendar/scheduler) are integrated into watches, cell phones, visors and even clothing.
Portable and all in one case. They help us save time and aid in achieving accuracy in our work.

TYPES OF PRINTERS
Ink-jet printers work in the same fashion as dot-matrix printers in the form images or characters with little dots. However, the dots are formed by tiny droplets of ink. Speed: Given in Pages per Minute (PPM) the higher the PPM the more pages they can print. Print quality: Determined by the DPI (Dot Per Inch) Example 2440 x 1220 DPI (Vertical and Horizontal DPI) The higher the DPI the better in terms of quality. Ink: Ink-Jet Printers use Ink Cartridges. Some benefits are: - Fast printing speeds. - Can produce really high quality print. - Easy to use. - They can produce vivid colors.
A laser printer works like a photocopy machine. Laser printers produce images on paper by directing a laser beam at a mirror which bounces the beam onto a drum. Speed: Given in Pages per Minute (PPM) the higher the PPM the more pages they can print. Most ink-jet printers offer different speeds depending on the quality of print desired. Print quality: Determined by the DPI. Example 4880 x 2440 DPI (Vertical and Horizontal DPI) Ink: Laser Printers use Toner Cartridges. Some benefits are: Very high resolution, fast results, high volume printing.

BACK PORT OF THE COMPUTER
(Source: http://www.examiner.com/article/basic-computer-connectors-and-advice)
PORT Jacks look identical on most PCs, so look for colors and icons to help you with plugging in these devices.
Serial (or COM) ports are a very versatile type of port. Some of the things you can plug into a serial port include: a mouse, modem, scanner, or digital camera. Most computers have two serial ports: COM1 and COM2.
You plug your printer into the parallel, or printer, port. Many newer printers may use a USB port.
Designed to replace older Serial and Parallel ports, can connect computers with a number of devices, such as printers, keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras, PDAs, and more.
You plug your monitor into the video port.
Plug in your speakers or headphone into the Line Out jack.
The Line In jack allows you to listen to your computer using a stereo system.
You can plug a microphone into this jack to record sounds on your computer.
If you have a joystick, musical (MIDI) keyboard, or other gaming device, this is where you plug it in.
The phone or modem jack is where you plug your computer into a phone line.
You can connect your computer to a network by plugging in an Ethernet cable in this port.
Is one of the fastest ways to connect a hard drive, CD-ROM drive, or other device to a computer.

Daniel: Let me look at it. Oh, here you are - you didn't plug it in.
Robert: Oh no....
CONVERSATION 2
Daniel: What's the most important part of the computer?
Robert: The most important part of your computer isn't the hard disk or the monitor or the printer. The most important part is the data you use.
Daniel: Why?
Robert: It's the only part of your computer that can't be replaced. If you didn't made a back-up copy of it - and something bad happens to your computer - you will never see your data again.
Daniel: I should buy a back-up tape drive.
Robert: That's a very good idea.

DISASSEMBLING
It means parting the different components of a computer from the system. We use the infinitive form to follow instructions in instruction manuals or when someone tells you how to do something.
There are often "sequencing" words to show the steps in the process. For example, "first", "second" and "finally".
Simple instructions to replace a light bulb:
First, turn off the electricity. Second, remove the light bulb. Then, screw in the new light bulb. Finally, turn the electricity on and switch on the light. You can also say "after that" instead of "then" and "first" / "second" instead of "firstly" and "secondly".
Giving extra help. When you give instructions, you can help the other person with extra information and advice. - Remember: turn off the electricity before touching any cables. - Be careful not to … (touch any live wires). - Try to … (see if the lightbulb is broken or just loose). - Try not to … (touch the lightbulb with your hands). - You need to … (check the wattage of the lightbulb first). - It's important to … (make sure the electricity is off). - It helps to … (wait for the lightbulb to cool down before you remove it). - Be sure to … (turn off the electricity before you you touch the lightbulb). - Always … (wear gloves when you touch a lightbulb). - Never … (touch a socket with wet hands).

Originally, the information on a computer screen was strictly text, and that text was manipulated using a keyboard. Then computers started using graphical images on the screen to represent a program or file. Those images are called icons. Along with the introduction of icons came the development of graphical user interfaces (GUIs). GUIs allow computer users to point at pictures and icons and then click the icon to manipulate that program or file, thus the phrase point and click.
Here we have important concept about software:
- Application program.
- Operating System.
_____________________ is a software program that loads automatically and controls just about everything on your computer. For example: Windows XP.
_____________________ helps you accomplish a certain task, such as writing a letter, browsing the Internet, or playing a game. Examples include word-processing programs, spreadsheets, databases, and games.
OPERATING SYSTEM
Your computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are many different computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage. The operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets what it needs.
Windows Operating System.
Microsoft created the Windows operating system in the mid-1980s. Over the years, there have been many different versions of Windows, but the most recent ones are Windows 8 (released in 2012), Windows 7 (2009), and Windows Vista (2007). Windows comes preloaded on most new PCs, which helps to make it the most popular operating system in the world.

2. Make a list of things that you can do on internet.
The Internet is a system that connects computer networks. The Internet links millions of computers all over the world. It allows your computer to get information stored on other computers far away. Computers connect to the Internet through telephone and cable systems.
The Internet grew out of a computer network called ARPANET. The United States military created ARPANET
in the 1960s. From the 1970s until the late 1980s, the U.S. government only let a few scientists and people in the military use it. In the 1980s, the government let networks at universities join with ARPANET to create the Internet. The Internet grew quickly. Schools, libraries, local and state governments, companies, and families were on the Internet by the mid-1990s.
Millions of people use the Internet every day. In 1981, only 213 computers were connected to the Internet. By 2003, more than 216 million computers were connected to the Internet.

People surfing the web using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer need to be extra careful. A hole has been found in the browser’s security systems. The anti-virus software maker Trend Micro Inc. said the problem leaves people’s computers open to hackers. Trend Micro spokesman Paul Ferguson warned the hole could let in criminals who want to hijack computers. He said security holes like this are “a goldmine for criminals because users have few ways to fight off attacks”. Explorer’s flaw tricks users into visiting websites that then steals passwords and other personal and confidential information. The hackers then sell this for big money on the black market. It is a sizeable problem because most of the world’s computers use Internet Explorer.
Microsoft says it is investigating the flaw. Its website states that it is considering creating an emergency software patch to fix the hole. The company is advising users to try a complicated series of measures it calls “workarounds”. Microsoft said: “We are actively investigating the vulnerability that these attacks attempt to exploit. We will continue to monitor the threat.” The software giant assured people that it would “take the appropriate action to protect our customers”. A Microsoft anti-virus blog said 0.2% of computer users may be affected. Its advice was to “always exercise caution when
browsing and try to go to sites that you trust”. Other experts advise switching to alternative browsers such as Firefox, Google Chrome

The major advantages of the Bluetooth technology over other communication technologies are its being cheap, wireless and automatic. Bluetooth devices work by using radio chips. When a Bluetooth device detects another one nearby it automatically links up to it, with no nasty configuration or messy cables. It makes synchronising your address book, calendar and to-do-list on your computer, mobile or PDA much easier. Bluetooth device, even in its low power setting, can communicate with another device that is within its ten-meter radius regardless of walls, windows, or other physical obstructions. You can connect to the internet on your laptop computer even though your mobile is at the bottom of your briefcase.
If you're wondering where the Bluetooth name originally came from, it was named after a Danish Viking and King, Harald Blåtand (translated as Bluetooth in English), who lived in the second part of the 10th century. Harald Blåtand united and controlled Denmark and Norway (hence the inspiration on the name: uniting devices through Bluetooth).
He got his name from his very dark hair which was unusual for Vikings, Blåtand means dark complexion. However a more popular, (but less likely reason), was that Old Harald had a inclination towards eating blueberries, so much that his teeth became stained with the colour.
