INTRODUCTION
Accidents are almost always related to: BONES, BLOOD, SKIN, or
BREATHING. In all cases we must follow these 3 steps:
1) PROTECT Get the victim
away from danger in
case of building
collapse, fire or
flood.
Do not move the
victim if there is no
imminent danger
2) ALERT
Ask for medical help.
Get other peoples
cooperation.
3) HELP
Fracture:
Immobilize the bone.
Bleeding: stop the
blood.
Burn: wash the skin.
Asphyxia: provide
air.

BONES:
Fractures may be:
Simple or closed: the broken bone remains in its place.
Displaced: the bones move from their usual place. Compound or open: the broken bone damages the surface of the
skin.
Try to immobilize the fractured part with a splint.
Avoid moving the victim.
If it is necessary to move the person, make sure they are in a
comfortable position and secured to prevent falls.
Remember: Dont apply pressure on the bone.Bandage the broken bone.
BLOOD
Try to stop the bleeding putting a gauze pad or a piece of clean
cloth on the wound.
Apply pressure on the wound and secure it strongly.
If bleeding continues, apply pressure to certain points:
To stop the bleeding:
from the face or head, press on the neck behind the ears.
from the shoulder and the arm, press between the clavicle and the
first rib.
from the arm, press on the internal part of the arm between the
shoulder and the elbow.
from the legs, press on the groin.
Only as a last resource, if the bleeding continues, apply a
tourniquet.
Remember: Too much bleeding causes hemorrhage and it can
produce the patients death.

SKIN
Burns can be caused by chemical, thermal, or electrical agents.
When a persons clothes are burning, put them in horizontal
position and cover them with a blanket, or make them roll
slowly, to suffocate the flames.
Wash the burn with abundant water.
Give the victim some water to drink.
Remember: Skin is very delicate and you should protect it
using creams and sun-tan-lotion.
BREATHING
When a person has symptoms of asphyxia, provide air with mouth-to-
mouth rescue breathing, or external chest compression (CPR).
Rescue breathing has the purpose of making air reach the lungs by
artificial means.
Clean the victims mouth to remove any object that may obstruct
breathing.
Lean the persons head back to open the breathing channel.
Cover the nose with your fingers, and insufflate air into the mouth.
Check that the chest expands with incoming air.
Remember: When a person stops breathing, you should give him mouth-
to-mouth rescue, and call the ambulance.

MY HISTORIES
1) One morning when I was getting out of school, I saw a little boycrossing the street. Then I heard as cream. A car had pushed
the boy to the ground. When the ambulance came, they
immobilize him and put him on a stretcher. Then they took him
to the hospital.
2) I remember that I saw an accident once. A drunk man waswalking on the street, suddenly a car ran over him, the man fell
to the floor and started to bleed. An ambulance came and
assisted him. They cleaned the injury with alcohol and cotton;
finally they put him in the ambulance.
