MDB, Inc. is a strategic consulting firm providing communication, information technology, information management, public education, community engagement, and policy analysis services for government agencies, nonprofits, and corporations.
The MDB Information Technology (IT) Services Team designs, develops, and maintains secure, robust, flexible, and responsive applications and IT solutions to meet specific client needs. We analyze, design, develop, implement, manage, and support information systems, web applications, websites, and computer/server infrastructure.

WEBINAR 1 GOALSState of the ScienceThis first webinar will focus on the framework and concepts and mechanistic considerations of these models, rather than on specifics of any one of the modular components. Latter sessions will focus on practical applications from the end-user perspective.
This is the first in a series of webinars, workshops, pilot studies and regional preparedness exercises to discuss the current state and future direction of critical healthcare infrastructure modeling for disaster events. This series is co-sponsored by the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health (NCDMPH), National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) with coordination through the Global Change Research Program. The goal is to develop a platform for integrating extreme event forecasts, health risk/impact assessment and population simulations, critical infrastructure (electrical, water, transportation, communication) impact and response models, health care facility-specific vulnerability and failure assessments, and health system/patient flow responses. Many of these components exist individually at present, but they have not been combined. The integration of these models is intended to create a more resilient regional health care system by better understanding critical tipping points in the vulnerability of current health systems during natural and human disasters and build an evidence base for specific interventions.

Project Description: Webinars Spread the Word
MDB was an early adopter of webinars as a way to present to diverse audiences the latest information regarding environmental public health. While planning and organizing webinars, we help our clients identify and book presenters who are thought leaders and decision-makers in their fields. To conduct these online events, MDB developed an efficient, tried-and-true method of planning and supporting webinars that makes presenters comfortable with the technology and mitigates technical difficulties. We provide technical support during each webinar and after each webinar we create an archived version of the broadcast, editing out mistakes and awkward pauses and adding closed captioning for the hearing impaired.
Since MDB began organizing and conducting webinars, the data indicate a steady increase in the number of webinar participants for our clients.
These participants have learned the latest about issues such as indoor air pollution and child health, disaster preparedness and response, and environmental health disparities.
Project Description: Information System of Grantee Research
MDB provided the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) with its first division-wide view of the research conducted by grantees. NIEHS sought MDB’s services to design and develop an easy-to-use information system capable of entering, storing, and retrieving large amounts of information about its extramural research. The resulting Science and Research Program Support Grant Coding System contains study information for more than 4,000 extramural grant projects.
The information system MDB developed consists of a relational database; an intuitive, user-friendly data entry interface; and a query and reporting tool. The data entry interface allows users to enter key information about each extramural grant project, such as experimental approach, chemical investigated, and health outcome. As part of the extensive quality assurance/quality control process, MDB wrote targeted data queries to check for consistency within and among projects.
This system has allowed MDB to respond quickly to continuing requests for information from NIEHS staff. It also ties in easily with powerful data visualization tools, allowing MDB to illustrate and summarize complex data sets with compelling visuals.
Project Description: Website Redesign for CBCA MDB conducted a complete redesign of the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals (CBCA) website. CBCA’s primary responsibility is to resolve contract disputes between government contractors and agencies under the Contract Disputes Act. It is an independent tribunal within GSA.
With CBCA’s functions in mind, MDB began the website redesign with a comprehensive overview of existing site content and proposed a new site organization based on our analysis. The new site MDB developed is mobile-friendly and adheres to Section 508 accessibility guidelines. It also features a larger screen area for content, a universal navigation menu and search bar, and sortable tables to help users locate past decisions of the Board. MDB also provided complete technical documentation to accompany the new website.
Project Description: Customized Tracking for Program Management
MDB built an easy-to-use, custom tracking system, called the Science Process Planning System, based on Microsoft Excel for the Office of the Director, Division of Extramural Research and Training, at NIEHS. Our client uses the Science Process Planning System to track the steps required for releasing regular Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). Conditional formatting is used to indicate different stages of milestone completion and automatic highlights draw attention to important or missing information. Since many tasks
depend on each other, the system allows for linked due dates; when one date changes, other linked dates change accordingly.
Simple but powerful, the Science Process Planning System provides a structured interface that facilitates monitoring FOAs as they move through NIEHS. All necessary data is captured and retrievable while keeping user effort to a minimum.
Project Description: Website Redesign for the Clearinghouse
MDB launched a newly organized and graphically enhanced website for the NIEHS National Clearinghouse for Worker Safety and Health Training (the Clearinghouse). The redesigned site makes it easier for users to find the information they need.
MDB began by organizing a card-sorting activity that solicited input from Clearinghouse site users. Card sorting is an effective, easy-to-use process to determine how people think about content and categories. It is a proven approach for designing information architecture, menu structure, or website navigation paths. This activity served to identify the new menu topics for the Clearing-house website.
MDB then categorized Clearinghouse resources into the new topic areas, and identified outdated materials to archive and new materials to add. We also added new graphic elements to the site, including sliders on the home page and images for each landing page.
