4 Field of application
Pile foundations serve to transfer building loads to deeper layers of ground and limitation of deformations according to the principles for the execution of geotechnical works. The piles may be used only for axial tension, pressure and alternating load.
The execution principles for construction are stated in ÖNORM EN 14199 and comprise information about pile foundation, soil examination, construction material and products, dimen-sioning as well as the installation of piles including tests and supervision.
The principles according to ÖNORM EN 1990 are to be considered of structural design be adhered to ÖNORM EN 1997-1 contains further geotechnical dimensioning rules.
Compliance with following standards is necessary:
- The foundation has to be calculated with regard to load transfer into the pile head (additional reinforcement, punching).
- With soils which allow lateral deflection of the pile, the buckling safety has to be clarified either by calculation or test loading.
5 Construction material and construction product
5.1 Micropile
5.1.1 Properties and classification of the load bearing element
A heat-treated concrete reinforcing steel bar from the rolling heat ARI-G-55, diameters 20-50 and S555/700, diameter 63,5, with left-hand thread ribs may be used as a load bearing element reinforcement steel B550B according to ÖNORM B 4707.
Weldability and bending property are not relevant for the intended geotechnical use.
Please find the parameters of the reinforcing steel in annex 7 and 8. The reinforcement steel is classified as B550B according to ÖNORM B 4707. The reinforcement steel with thread ribs can also be used for a lower steelgrade than B550B. The reinforcing steel bars fulfill the requirements of ÖNORM EN 1992-1-1, see appendix C.
The requirements concerning ”bond effect” in the pile length of the load bearing element are fulfilled by thread ribs of the steel bar.
For extended short term service life of the micropile system, a hot-dip galvanized surface coating of the steel bar may be carried through according to ÖNORM EN ISO 1461.
5.1.2 Requirements concerning the load capacity of micropile system
The following requirements have to be complied with:
- The micropile´s tensile load capacity, consisting of the components pile (reinforcement steel B550B), pile head and coupler, has an efficiency of 100% in respect of the charac-teristic ultimate load of the support load bearing element according to ÖNORM EN 14199. In case of a failure the system shows ductile forming.
- In case of an anchorage or coupler failure the elongation value measured at the steel bar must not be below Agt = 3,5 %.
ANP – SYSTEMS GMBH _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- The rated value for the micropile´s ultimate limit state is, according to ÖNORM EN 1992-1-1, to be set with a partial safety factor of 1,15 when reaching a yield strength Fp0.2. The soil conditions have to be measured in accordance with ÖNORM EN 1997-1. ÖNORM EN 1990 applies to the soil support capability.
- With a torque moment - according to annex 6 - under tensile load of the anchorage´s or coupler´s ultimate limit state a slip 0,1 mm is kept according to ISO 15835- 1. A slip has to be set at up to 1,0 mm on a non-torqued coupler, with a pile diameter of 63,5mm up to 2,0 mm.
As fatigue strength parameter a stress range Rsk for load N = 2 × 106 cycles with a stress value of 0,6 Rp0.2 is proven:
- Ø 20 to 32 mm: 90 N/mm²
- Ø 36 and 40 mm: 80 N/mm²
- Ø 50 and 63,5 mm: 60 N/mm²
- When a corrosion rate is intended then the loss of cross section has to be considered with proof of load capacity. Please refer to annex 9.
5.2 Pile head
5.2.1 Pile head design
The pile head design is either made up of pile head plate fixed by nuts (anchor nut / locknut) or
a torqued cylindrical anchor piece with or without bursting reinforcement. When an anchor piece
is used, a additional bond length has to be complied with according to annex 5.
The connection from the micropile in the foundation body demands both with semi-permanent
and permanent piles with standard corrosion protection a pile neck sheating by means of a
plastic corrugated sheathing to seal a possible construction joint.
Details about the corrosion protection system´s parameters, accessories, components and
materials see annex 10 to 14. The torque moments are listed in annex 6.
5.2.2 Load transfer on to the structure
Load transmission from the foundation body to the pile head can be carried out with or without
additional reinforcement (bursting reinforcement). Design criteria are the requirements accord-
ing to ETAG 013. With the following values an efficiency of 110% with additional reinforcement
and an efficience of 130% without additional reinforcement is achieved related to the character-
istic breaking force of the load bearing element:
- concrete compressive strength at time of applied load 25 N/mm² (cube 150 mm)
- minimum concrete quality C 20/25 according to ÖNORM EN 206-1
- center distance and edge distance of the micropile system with end anchorage by means pile head plate or anchor piece, with or without additional reinforcement (bursting reinforcement) according to annex 6
ANP – SYSTEMS GMBH _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5.3 Coupling
The load bearing element can be coupled by couplers. The coupler has to be locked with nuts in case of tensile and alternating load. In case of compression load the coupler has to be secured against unscrewing with heat shrink sleeve.
When temporary and permanent piles with sheathing in accordance with ÖNORM EN 1537 are used, locking might be dispensed with in case of tensile loads. A locking device to prevent unscrewing is required.
Data concerning coupler parameters and material see annex 12.The torque moments are listed in annex 6.
5.4 Cement grout
An outer cement grout cover of installed micropiles to the borehole wall is conditional of manu-facturing. ÖNORM EN 1992-1-1 comprises approaches for the required minimum covering al-lowing for the aggressiveness classes (see ÖNORM EN 206-1).
Spacers are used to position the pile concentrically. Cement grout is used to build the outer body (see ÖNORM EN 14199). The water-cement ratio has to be adapted to the building site conditions.
The corrosion protection of the permanent pile with double corrosion protection (DCP) is build up by a corrugated sheathing with minimum wall thickness 1,0 mm and an inner cement grout cover between corrugated sheathing and pile of at least 5 mm. This equates the corrosion protection of the permanent anchor´s bond length according to ÖNORM EN 1537. The pile is positioned concentrically either with a cord or a mat spacer.
Both the corrosion protection and the inner cement grout cover are applied in the factory. The cement grout used complies with the standards of ÖNORM EN 445, ÖNORM EN 446 and ÖNORM EN 447.
6 Service life of the micropile construction
6.1 Corrosion protection
The micropile system at hand uses the following methods to reach the desired service life:
- no separate measures for temporary use (max. 2 years) - allowance for corrosion rate in case of limited use for semi-permanent service life - surface coating by hot dip galvanizing - encapsulation is due to the system by designing an grout body (standard corrosion
protection) for permanent use with the required minimum covering - sheathing (double corrosion protection - according to ÖNORM EN 1537) for
permanent use
Further requirements concerning the corrosion protection of semi-permanent micropiles and micropiles with standard corrosion protection have to be derived from a critical assessment of the building and ambient conditions. Even with an early breakdown of single elements the bearing capacity of the micropile foundation has to be assured. The application of single elements is not intended.
Corrosion protection by means of corrosion rate may only be used with a statistically secured number of elements (redundant system - to increase the reliability of the system).
ANP – SYSTEMS GMBH _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
6.2 Exposure to corrosion
To evaluate exposure to corrosion of metallic material in soil according to ÖNORM EN 12501 - 1,2 shall be used. Exposure to corrosion is classified as:
- low
- medium
- high
The most important physical and chemical parameters of soil and foundation materials are dealt with in ÖNORM EN 12501-2. Appendix B of the norm contains detailed data for soil classification.
An evaluation of the different exposures to corrosion is done by means of an informative table with essential soil parameters. These parameters are the basis for the indication of size con-cerning the respective corrosion rate of the micropile.

6.3 Types of micropiles
6.3.1 Micropiles for short term use and semi-permanent use
Annex 1 contains a schematic drawing of the temporary micropile. The micropile has to be center positioned in the borehole. For temporary use no further measures for corrosion protection have to be taken. If exposure to corrosion is high, corrosion is avoided by a cement grout cover 15 mm.
ANP – SYSTEMS GMBH _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The coupler must be secured against unscrewing by means of a heat shrink sleeve under tensile and compression load. Optionally, a contact coupler may be used only under compres-sion load. Under alternating load the coupler has to be secured with lock nuts.
Annex 2 contains a schematic drawing of the semi-permanent micropile. Pile neck sheathing and plastic corrugated sheathing are used for the connection between the micropile and the foundation body.
The coupler must be secured with lock nuts under tensile and alternating load. (a fixing with lock nuts is required). Under compressive load the coupler has to be fixed against unscrewing by means of a heat shrink sleeve. Optionally, a contact coupler may be used only under compres-sion load.
The planned service life and the soil´s exposure to corrosion determine the size of the corrosion rate. The cement grout cover is at least 15 mm.
The reference values for the corrosion of the micropile in soil are derived from results of long-term storage. The corrosion rate is stated for a low, medium and high exposure to corro-sion and a service life of 2, 7, 30 and 50 years. The Rounding parameter is 0,1 mm.
The corrosion rates mentioned here for blank steel and galvanized steel are not relevant in this case because the micropile is center positioned in the borehole and then grouted with cement mortar. However, the corrosion rates are mentioned here are a relevant output variable for the corrosion of steel.
With consideration of a cement grout cover of at least 15 mm a slowing down of the carbonation process dependent on exposure to corrosion in soil of steel is achieved and the corrosion rate is reduced.

Annex 9 contains details concerning the loss of a micropile´s load-bearing capacity due to corrosion. Therewith also the corrosion at the coupling is covered when the coupler´s cement grout cover is 15 mm.
6.3.2 Micropile for permanent use
6.3.2.1 Micropile with standard corrosions protection by means under cement grout cover
Annex 3 contains a drawing of the permanent micropile with standard corrosion protection. The pile neck has to be provided with a pile neck casing as with the semi-permanent pile. For the coupling the same set up shall be applied as with the semi-permanent micropile.
The permanent pile´s corrosion protection is achieved by means of encapsulation in a grout body. The required cement grout cover is dependent on soil class and is specified in relevant european geotechnical standards. The crack width under tensile load is limited to 0,2 mm.
For micropiles with coupling the required minimum cement grout cover shall correspond to the coupler´s external diameter (including heat shrink sleeve).

7 Installation of micropiles
Instructions for installation of micropiles and for the production of the factory-made corrosion protection can be found in annex 15 and 16.
Micropiles may only be installed by professional staff in compliance with the listed procedural requirements and installation instructions of the approval holder.
8 Inspections
8.1 Material tests
The manufacturer of micropiles has to carry out internal production and quality control regulated
by ÖNORM EN ISO 9001.
These norms refer to the:
- production of micropile components
- production of the corrosion protection system
Internal and external quality and production control of the micropile components are regulated
by BMVIT approvals (see reference approvals on page 1 and 2.
The production of the pile head plate may also be carried out by the manufacturer of the corrosion protection system according to specific dimensions. The manufacturer is then involved in internal quality control for the plates.
The external control has to be carried out by an accredited inspection authority based on a supervision contract. Additionally, the scope of internal control is specified in the supervision contract. The approval holder and the external inspection authority have to conclude a supervision contract. External control has to be executed once a year. The results have to be submitted in a report.
8.2 Load tests
Load tests have to be made and documented at the building site where required in accordance
with ÖNORM EN 14199.

Corrosion protection by hot dip galvanising
The galvanising is done in galvanising plants according to ÖNORM EN ISO
1461. The average thickness of the zinc coating layer has to be at least 150 m.
Particular attention shall be paid to the threadability of accessories.
Permanent corrosion protection - DCP
The steel bar is cut to length and is provided with spacers by means of a
PE - cord or mat spacers and a corrugated sheathing on its entire length,
excluding the thread part for the pile head. At the pile foot an injection cap is
arranged and at the pile head a vent flap is fixed. A tape is used to seal it against
the corrugated sheathing.
If parts with sleeve joints are used, either vent flaps are mounted at both ends of
each piece, or a full length of bar is grouted and cut to pieces after hardening of
the grout.
The annulus between steel bar and corrugated sheathing is grouted with cement
on an inclined platform. The grouted micropile must not be removed from the
injection platform and loaded before 24h have passed, provided that suitable
temperature conditions for injection and hardening are given.
To ensure the centric position of micropile in the borehole, spring basket spacers
are mounted on the building site and, if required, post-grouting systems.

Transport and storage
Significant for the effectiveness of the permanent corrosion protection is that the
corrugated sheating is not damaged by incorrect handling during transport,
storage and mounting.
The micropiles have to be stored off-floor. The support points must be positioned
at an appropriate distance to avoid deflection and must not be sharp-edged.
The stacking of micropiles is only permissible either parallel, side-by-side or on
top of each other. The weight of micropiles must not result in the damage of the
lower layers of stacked micropiles.
Installation
The production of the borehole depends on the soil conditions and takes place
uncased, cased or partly cased. The borehole has to be cleaned properly for the
installation of a micropile.
An appropriate borehole diameter has to be chosen so that the micropile and the
spring basket spacer can be inserted without damaging the corrugated
sheathing, e.g. by sharp edges of the casing pipe. If necessary the diameter of
the drilling hole has to be adjusted to the coupler’s diameter.
Whenever a pile is transported to the borehole or when a pile is inserted,
deflections should be avoided. If a crane is used to transport the pile, a traverse
with multiple suspension points should be used.
When the pile is installed in parts, a coupling has to be fitted during installation. If
the micropile is used with alternating loads couplers must be locked with nuts.
For compressive loads a contact coupler can be used. In this case a heat shrink
sleeve must be used to assure the coupler is secured against unscrewing.
With permanent micropiles the coupling´s corrosion protection is carried out by
means of a heat shrink sleeve. Thereby a sufficient overlapping to the permanent
protection´s corrugated sheathing is necessary.
The micropile is installed centrically into the cleaned borehole and is then grouted
with cement grout or the borehole has already been filled with cement grout and
grouted afterwards.
With permanent micropiles the corrugated sheathing of the permanent corrosion
protection must be embeded into the foundation body.
