Welcome to the World Championships Lifesaving 2016

A message from the President of International Life Saving Federation

Graham Ford AM On behalf of the International Life Saving Federation, I would like to welcome all competitors to the Lifesaving World Championships 2016. I am very proud to be attending the Lifesaving World Championships 2016 in the Netherlands as the International Life Saving Federation President. It is exciting to see the lifesavers of the world converging in Eindhoven and Noordwijk, to compete with the best lifesavers from across the globe. These Lifesaving World Championships will showcase the skills and athleticism of our lifesavers. As lifesavers we train and compete to save lives. Through competition we hone our skills to undertake rescues when called upon, to prevent drowning and save lives. This event is about friendship, camaraderie and celebration of the international lifesaving movement with over 4000 competitors, and I have no doubt you will create many friendships with competitors from various nations and cultures. The Lifesaving World Championship 2016 would not have been possible without the generous support of Reddingsbrigade Nederland. On behalf of the International Life Saving Federation I thank them for their contribution. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the International Life Saving Federation to thank the 500 volunteers, technical officials and water safety personnel who will combine together to provide our competitors with a safe and fun environment to compete in. I would also like to thank the organizing committee of Reddingsbrigade Nederland and their dedicated event management team, for their outstanding contribution to ensure the success of the Lifesaving World Championships 2016. Good luck to all the International competitors, enjoy your time in the Netherlands. I look forward to seeing you on the Beach in Noordwijk or at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Pool in Eindhoven. Yours in Lifesaving Graham Ford AM International Life Saving Federation President ILS The International Lifesaving Federation (ILS) is the world authority in the global effort to prevent drowning and works with national lifesaving organizations to improve drowning prevention, water safety, water rescue, lifesaving, lifeguarding and lifesaving sport. ILS is a non-profit, non-political, non-religious, worldwide lifesaving sport and humanitarian organisation. A man, woman or child drowns somewhere in de the world every 30 seconds, making a tragedy of more than 1 million people who died by drowning per year. This is an unacceptable and preventable toll and is the driving motivation for the ILS. The International Federation was established in 1910 and is now representing over 30 million lifesavers and lifeguards in over 130 countries. They all have one objective: the preservation of human life in the aquatic environment. Sports competitions are organised under the motto ‘fit to save a life’. More information is available on the official website: www.ilsf.org

The Dutch Lifesaving Federations and its sponsors are keen on putting lifesaving on the national and international map. The region and cities want to attract a high-level international sport event. The Netherlands has a population of more than 17 million and is one of the most prosperous countries in Europe, and as a result, in the world. The Netherlands is subdivided into twelve provinces. Amsterdam is the official capital as stated by the constitution, but The Hague (Den Haag) is the seat of government, the home of the monarch and the location for most foreign embassies. The country also is host to the International Court of Justice, which also is seated in The Hague (Den Haag).
