FOREWORD
The current Directory, Ii ke those pub I ished in the preceding years, is designed to provide information on all companies, agencies, or individuals who are producing minerals or mineral aggregates in Washington. The names of the concerns and of the mines or other properties are listed, together with addresses, locations, and the minerals produced. In most instances the concerns listed are currently operating; some, however, are in a development or exploration stage but expect to produce in the near future. The data used are from the files of the Division of Mines and Geology and have been obtained principally through personal contacts with the operators at their mines, quarries, or places of business.
Sand, gravel, and common crushed-rock operations include all the known commercial producers, as distinct from State, County, and railroad pits and quarries. As the emphasis is on operations of some permanence, the many pits of the Washington Department of Highways are not listed individually because of the temporary or intermittent nature of their production. The rock referred to is mostly used for road-building purposes. That used for riprap, breakwaters, and dimension, architectural, and landscape stone is listed in the nonmetal! ic section of this report.
Every effort has been made to insure the completeness and accuracy of the data included in this Directory. However, as changes in status due to reorganization, removals, and altered mining conditions are continually taking place, it will be appreciated if additions and corrections are brought to the attention of the Division.
Marshall T. Huntting, Supervisor Division of Mines and Geology Olympia, Washington

DIRECTORY OF WASHINGTON MINING OPERATIONS, 1959
By
Gerald W. Thorsen
INTRODUCTION
ARRANGEMENT AND USE OF THE DIRECTORY
The active mining operations of the state are arranged in three categories: those producing or currently preparing to produce METALLIC minerals; those producing NONMETALLIC minerals exclusive of sand, gravel, and crushed rock; and those producing SAND AND GRAVEL, and crushed rock. In the text of the directory the operations are listed alphabetically by organization under each of the three categories. Each entry, in addition to the organization name, includes the names of officers or other individuals familiar with the operation, a mailing address, the current status of activity, the product or products in order of importance, and the location of the producing property by legal land description.
Following the alphabetical listings appear three sets of indexes. The first, the PROPERTY INDEX, requires that only the appropriate mine, prospect, claim, pit, or quarry name be known in order that one may ascertain full Information about the property from the alphabetical section. The second, the PRODUCT INDEX, requires that only the product or products from a property in any of the categories be known in order to obtain full information. The third index, the COUNTY INDEX, lists all the active operations of each category that are located in each county. This index also includes the product or products of each operation. Thus by knowing only the location of a property, one may obtain full information.
The abbreviations used throughout the directory include:
Ag - silver Au - gold Co - cobalt
Cr - chromium Cu - copper Fe - iron
Hg - mercury Mo - molybdenum Ni - nickel
Pb - lead U - uranium W - tungsten Zn - zinc
Underscoring indicates the metal or metals of principal economic Importance.
Locations by legal land descriptions are abbreviated; for example, NE.t sec. 15, (29-37E), which written in full would be northeast quarter of section 15, township 29 north, range 37 east Willamette meridian.

{a) These figures are furnished by the United States Bureau of Mines in coopera-tion with the Division of Mines and Geology, State of Washington.
{b) Preliminary figures, partly estimated.
(c) Incomplete total, fire clay included under "Undistributed."
{d) Value included with "Undistributed."
(e) Uranium ore production data are classified by the Atomic Energy Commission.
(f) Abrasive stone (grinding pebbles), barite, carbon dioxide, cement, diatomite, gem stones, gold, gypsum, magnesite, mercury (1958), olivine, pumice, silver, strontium, uranium, and values indicated by footnote d.
(g) Total has been adjusted to eliminate duplication in the value of clay and stone.
The 1959 value of Washington mineral production rose to $62.3 million, an increase of 2 percent {$1.4 million) from the previous year, according to estimates by the United States Bureau of Mines. The rise was attributable largely to higher production of cement, lead, gold, silver, and uranium. Increases In these commodities offset lower output of barite, coal, copper, gypsum, magnesite, pumice, sand and gravel, and zinc. The value was the greatest since 1955 when the State total reached $67.3 million. Continued expansion of production and facilities in the cement industry was the leading development in 1959.
In 1958, Washington ranked sixth among the states in production of lead, ninth in zinc, sixth in gold, and seventh in silver. Washington's Metaline district in Pend Oreille County was fifth in production of lead and eighth in zinc among the nation's mining districts. The Pend Oreille and Grandview mines, within the Metaline district, ranked eleventh and twentieth, respectively, in production of lead and tenth and twenty-second in zinc in the United States. The Knob Hill mine in Ferry County was fourth in gold and seventeenth in silver production. Gold was also produced in Chelan County from the Gold King mine, which ranked fourteenth in the nation. Washington's largest uranium producer, the Dawn Mining Company, is reported to have had uranium production of $6,168,102 in 1958.

IDENTIFICATION OF SAMPLES
The State Division of Mines and Geology, 335 General Administration Building, Olympia, Washington, will be glad to examine in its laboratory samples of rocks, clays, or minerals that occur in Washington and advise the sender as to what the material is. No charge is made for this service. If a value is apparent, suggestions will' be given as to possible utilization. Funds and facilities are not available for assays or chemical analyses, but mineralogic and petrographic determinations are made as necessary. If an assay appears warranted, the sender is advised of that fact, so that he may submit a sample of the material to a commercial analyst if he desires.
In connection with this work, it is helpful for the laboratory to know the approximate location where the sample was found. This allows a knowledge of the geology of the given area to be applied to the material in question, sometimes permitting more useful suggestions than would otherwise be possible.
Samples should be in their natural state (not pulverized). Size and shape are immaterial. If available, a piece with the approximate bulk of a small orange is most easily worked with, although less than this amount is satisfactory.
If more than one sample is submitted in one package, each should be numbered for convenience in replying; a similarly numbered fragment retained by the sender will be found useful for reference when the reply is received. Numbers attached with scotch tape usually work loose. The safest procedure is to use adhesive tape on a dust-free surface of the specimen; the number, then, can be written on the tape with ink. Each specimen in a package should be separately wrapped.
In applying identification techniques, samples may be broken, crushed, or largely used up, so cannot be returned to the sender unless under exceptional circumstances and provided return postage has been supplied.
