Visit by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

I am indeed delighted to address and interact with the students, Faculty and Staff of R.V. Institute of Technology here in the historic town of Bijnor. My greetings to all of you.

I understand Agriculture is the main source of income in bijnor, with sugarcane being the main crop. Friends, I also understand that R.V. Institute of Technology has been working on several Rural Development Projects and other social relevant programmes like Farmer’s Meets and Self reliant workshop. Promotion of Green Building Campus and several other social initiatives by RVIT are worth appreciating. The vision of the institution is “To transform young minds into technocrats, globally competitive, highly skilled with positive mind set, who live with human value in full respect of the co-existence”. I am sure, students come out of R.V. Institute will have the capacity to feel and do that I can do it. I would like to greet all the faculty members and the supporting staff for shaping the young minds. Let me share about an important experience of system development systems integration and system management, which I had during my education at MIT Chennai.

While I was studying aeronautical engineering in MIT, Chennai, (1954-57) during the third year of my course, I was assigned a project to design a low- level attack aircraft together with six other colleagues. I was given the responsibility of system design and system integration by integrating the team members. Also, I was responsible for aerodynamic and structural design of the project. The other five of my team took up the design of propulsion, control, guidance, and avionics and declared my work to be gloomy and disappointing. He didn’t lend an ear to my difficulties in bringing together data base from multiple designers. I asked for a month’s time to complete the task, since I had to get the inputs from five of my colleagues without which I cannot complete the system design. Prof. Srinivasan told me “Look, young man, today is Friday afternoon. I give you three days time, if by Monday morning I don’t get the configuration design, your scholarship will be stopped.” I had a jolt in my life, as scholarship was my lifeline, without which I cannot continue with my studies. There was no other way out but to complete the task of design.

My team felt the need for working together round the clock. We didn’t sleep that night, working on the drawing board skipping our dinner. On Saturday, I took just an hour’s break. On Sunday morning, I was near completion, when I felt someone’s presence in my laboratory. It was Prof. Srinivasan studying my progress in the drawing board. After looking

at my work, he patted and hugged me affectionately. He had words of appreciation: “I knew I was putting you under stress and asking you to meet a difficult deadline. You have done great job in system design”. What I learnt from engineering education was. How important system development, system integration and system management is? This integrated learning experience assisted me in various faces of my career.

Friends, finally I would like to ask you, what would you like to be remembered for? You have to evolve yourself and shape your life. You should write it on a page. That page may be a very important page in the book of human history. And you will be remembered for creating that one page in the history of the nation- whether that page is the page of invention, the page of innovation or the page of discovery or the page of creating societal change or a page of removing the poverty or the page of finding new technologies for humankind.

My best wishes to the students, faculty members and staff of RV Institute of Technology, Bijnor, for success in the mission of creating enlightened citizens toward building a knowledge society.

May God bless you.

I really get inspired to take few more steps ahead for social work. I must say that the real power of a Nation is the power of the youths. If this power rises, then the future of the Nation is bright. Vietnam was built by the youths, Japan was raised from difficult times by the youths and the revolution in Indonesia was made possible by the youths. I meet and interacted with a hundred thousand college students. If God wishes in few years I plan to bring forward more youths and students towards social work.

When I was a youth I thought about the biggest puzzle of the world. Everyone around me seemed to run to and fro without a stop, and they don’t quit until the die. Looking back in the history Alexander the great who ruled almost the entire of the known world, even he departed empty handed. This is a real mystery you know, we come empty handed and we go empty handed, yet all our life we narrowly confine ourselves to what is ours. Some are step ahead, they say-‘What belongs to me is of course mine, but what is yours is also mine’. Throughout the life there is but one word-‘mine’.

The real happiness or joy has to come from inside and it comes through service that you offer to others. When you do voluntary work, you realize the need for their development and the necessity to fight the corruption linked with it. They are two sides of the same coin. Mahatma Gandhi used to say that to change a village, one needs to change the villagers, when the villagers change the villages will change, and when the villages will change, the country will change.

Those trees which stand tall and have good fruits, only those are pelted by stones, one which bears no fruit and is dry no stones are thrown to it. So if someone insults you, that is the first thing which suggests that you are very much alive and active. There is a saying in Marathi that when flood comes the big trees near the shore are washed away, but the grasses are not. Because the grasses lean since it has modesty, similarly in your life if you don’t have modesty you will be distracted and washed away. These few things you must bear in mind before you dive to work for the Nation.

Dear RVITians,

I feel ecstatic to introduce you to the institution RVIT which totally do the justice with the philosophy of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (Formerly UPTU) “We believe in learning, not in simple teaching and giving lectures”.

The institute like RVIT is determined to provide 360 development to its students are not only getting technical education but also absorbing all the aspects of like moral values, importance of technical education for the betterment of mankind, culture, roots and respect to their soil.

Education or knowledge has different aspects, Engineering education can be provided by any institute but the pure knowledge which covers all the aspects like ‘Time precision, making the students learn the value of time’, ‘Integrity, inculcating moral values by making them

understand the values of their soil and roots’, ‘Competency, expertise in their field of education with the positive state-of-mind’, is given by few institutes and I am glad that RVIT is among them.

By considering all the facts that providing and motivating people for technical education is not an easy job but inspite of all these negativities the management committee took a step with all their values of togetherness, self-belief to establish an institute with such foundation and today I, really feel proud, that decision, that dream is now prospering with such a rapid rate in front of you all.

I wish RVITians a great future and asks them their support to keep on raising the standard of engineering and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (Formerly UPTU) as I, believe that ‘What you knows nobody knows’. All I can say that institutes like RVIT has the potential to prove the proverb true. “Sky is the limit, keep on raising your bar of standard”. Long live RVITians!!!!

Visit by Prof. R K KhandalFormer Vice Chancellor, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University

Today in this growing era of increasing technology all our focus is on urban areas not on the rural part of the country which is actually the key factor that contributes to the maximum development of countries like, India. As almost 80% of the population comes from rural background and I, being from the rural area knows the level of difficulties an aspiring candidate has to face regarding education, the technical education.

So, I whole-heatedly congratulate and owe my best wishes to the management committee for establishing a technical institute in this area which strengthens the technical education by closeness to nature as any knowledge is meaningful and fruitful if it beneficial to mankind.

“Engineer” is not at a mere term but it constitutes the whole cycle of development in itself as without an engineer the development of country, society is not at all possible, as development means when we become economically strong and this will be only possible by the efforts of

an engineer whether it is in infrastructure, information technology , telecommunication, banking etc.

I feel elated that RVIT is not only just making engineers but they are providing the assets to the world and country by giving them the lessons of ‘Punctuality, making the students learn the value of time’, ‘Integrity, inculcating moral values by making them understand the values of their soil and roots’, ‘Competency, expertise in their field of education with the positive state-of-mind’, ‘Excellence in performance, motivating them to give their performance near to perfection’.

It is my advice to all the students “set the standards for you so that you keep yourself motivated and do the work that not only inspires you but also to the people around you”.

With these words I, thank the management committee of RVIT for establishing such an institution in this area. Wish RVIT a very bright future ahead!!!!

Engineering is the application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge in order to design, build, maintain, and improve structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. Engineering combines the fields of science and mathematics to solve real world problems that improve the world around us.

What really distinguishes an engineer is his ability to implement ideas in a cost effective and practical approach.

This ability to take a thought, or abstract idea, and translate it into reality is what separates an engineer from other fields of science and mathematics

R.V. Institute of Technology as a Human Value Nodal Centre :

As a Human-value Education Nodal Centre designated by Dr. Abdul Kalam Technical University, we understand our responsibility to work for the development of the society with value-adding activities. We identified two major areas where work can be done for upliftment of the society: Schools and Villages:

This short-duration workshop is customized with an objective to inculcating humanistic skills in the students so that they become good human beings along with technical competence in their respective domains. In this workshop, discussions on human value-based right understanding are held so that difference between right and wrong can be understood which will further help in right decision making by the youth. The workshop also draws the attention towards the mind conditioning, identification of various belief systems which work like operating systems in our minds creating self-created barriers which further leads to low-esteem and lack of confidence. The workshop is basically designed with human value inputs and case-study based motivational inputs to sensitize them about their roles, responsibility and objectives aligned with human goals for holistic development. The main objectives of this workshop are to help the students become more socially responsible and awakened about critical dimensions of life: Happiness, Trust, Respect, Positive attitude, Interpersonal relationship, Co-existence and Career. These workshops are being conducted for students of all courses and classes. 30 workshops have already been conducted for more than 2500 students in schools of Bijnor District (UP) and Kotdwar (Uttrakhand) with overwhelming response by the students. Similar Life skill workshops with different content are being conducted for faculty members of schools, also, as they are in direct and constant touch with future custodians and their attitudinal transformation is must for creating long-term value.

For Schools – Life Skill Development Workshops :

Human Values And Professional Ethics

For Villages – Rural Development Workshops :

Villages are self-sustaining and ecologically-balanced systems but due to lack of facilities and mindless industrialization, the youths in the villages are migrating towards cities causing loading of resources and creating unhygienic living conditions in the cities. To bring about change in the lives of villagers and change their mindsets to dilute migration, we adopted one village, Chaukpuri near our college and planned 5-day Rural Development Workshops twice in a year. During preliminary studies, we collected data to find out the basic problems the villagers are facing so that we can utilize our faculty and material resources for developing eco-friendly designs and technologies with assistance from competent govt. authorities to ease their lives. On the basis of data collected, we sought assistance from NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, Chandigarh) to work on the various areas like sanitation, hygiene and organic farming to bring some positive change in villagers’ lives.

First workshop was conducted from January 12 to 16 January, 15 followed by second workshop in Chaukpuri Village from 24-28 August, 15. In these workshops, we designed low-cost kitchen using Ferro-cement technology and smoke-less chullahs at just Rs. 2350/- and installed at 23 houses in chaukpuri village, did sanitation work and held discussions with villagers in evening chaupals about organic farming and its impact. These workshops gave our students and faculty a real-time experience which honed their engineering skills and boosted their confidence besides development of society-oriented perspective.

For second vision of imbibing entrepreneurship skills in our students and youths of village to dilute the migration rate, we organized self-Reliant Programs (SRP) for Skill Development to help them think in the direction of playing entrepreneur role so that they can create employment opportunities for others thereby reducing migration from villages to cities. For skill development, 1-day and 3-day farmers’ meet are also organized in college premises as well as in near-by villages at regular intervals. RVIT was one of the Centers for Online Participation in 5 National Conventions on Organic Farming.

Freshers is a way of musical and happy interaction between seniors and juniors. It is the time when seniors welcome their juniors whole-heartedly and introduce them to the environment of college and also tell them the importance of their courses. It is the time seniors take the responsibility of the juniors and bid promises to them that they‘ll help them out in every aspect of their life not within the college campus but also in every aspect of life.

Farewell it is just another way of musical and happy interaction between seniors and juniors. It is the time when juniors bid adieu to the seniors with their best wishes for their future. It is the time when every one of the senior feels the sense of respect, love and hopes from their juniors. The farewell doesn‘t mean that it is the last time of the seniors in the college but it reminds that now the real journey has started. That day they have to make a promise to themselves that they‘ll not only make their parents, relatives, friends or city people proud but now they have to make their institute proud. Now their shoulders have the responsibility to maintain the reputation and protect the legacy of their institute. And on that day the juniors also recognize that now “Wherever you go, go with all your heart” they have become the seniors and they have to take the responsibilities of their seniors to take the institute to the new heights.

Students during their Industrial Internship

Students during their Industrial Visit @ DMRC, New Delhi & Yakult, Sonipat, Haryana

As an integral part of curriculum, we take our students out on Industrial tours to various companies relevant to their profiles and domains. Such visits give them necessary exposure about the processes, procedures, methodological approach being adopted in the corporate sector and gives them sector-specific inputs so that they can do well in the recruitment drives. Meeting people in the corporate sector through such visits and trainings also helps them to learn the importance of communication skills and good interpersonal skills for better productivity and efficiency in the system.

It is very important for any institute to give proportionate weightage to extra-curricular activities for confidence building in students. With that vision, we have different clubs: Socionity Club, for doing society-oriented work; RISC Club for developing sports-related passion; Next Club for meaningful audio-visual media followed by group discussion; Energy Club for Electronics/Electrical related projects; MESA Club for Mechanical/Civil related projects; Technocrats for software related projects and Utsav Club for injecting fresh energy into the campus through cultural activities and dramatics.

The regular activities in these clubs give our students a 360 exposure for holistic development.
