2017 has gotten off to a wonderful start. I am so excited about what we have done so far and what we are about to do as a church family. I am still on a cloud at how extraordinary our Martin Luther King, Jr service was. As pastor it was wonderful to see so many of you in attendance especially our children and youth. Let’s continue working to keep Dr. King’s dream alive in these uncertain times.

As you have seen in the recent months we have made many technology upgrades. The screens and the cross are a wonderful addition to our worship experience. In this edition of the magazine we will tell you more about the technology that we have at the church as well as how technology can enhance your daily time with God.

Before you know it spring will be here. Continue to enjoy time with your family and friends and I’ll see you in church on Sundays.

God Bless.

Welcome to 2017. It’s already the second month of the year. I hope you have begun to work on your goals for the year. If you haven’t started it’s not too late to do so. In order to make 2017 your best year you have to plan and be intentional about making this happen. Take some time to finalize your plan and then begin working to make your dreams come true.

This edition is all about technology. I’m sure you have noticed the upgrades to our sanctuary. The cross that hangs reminds us every time we see it of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. The screens have been a wonderful

addition to our worship experience. In these pages you will learn more details about the installation process and how these pieces along with the other technology upgrades have taken our worship experience to a greater level.

Also use this edition as a resource to add technology to your daily experience with God. He has given us many tools to help deepen our relationship with him. Enjoy this magazine and remember to share it with your family and friends.

God Bless. Joi Thomas

Sound, light, graphic images and effects along with sermons and the spoken word from the pulpit enhance the worship experience for church goers, online and mobile viewers. Audio, video, and lighting (AVL) technology is an integral part of NPBC.

The NPBC Communications Ministry creates AVL and stage design. Rev. Joshua Thomas, minister of audio/video media said, “I get to marry technology with theology.” He has academic degrees in both fields and a personal attachment to the church (his father is Bishop Thomas). A member for nearly 30 years, he understands NPBC as a progressive ministry and uses his unique abilities to develop robust technology arts that serve infinite numbers of people in this age of computerized devices.

The theatrical lighting system at The Holy City of Zion was upgraded in 2012 with the installation of a moving light rig, new lighting console, and a haze machine. These additions prepared the sanctuary to be used for major concerts and events. Gospel Artist Anthony Brown and Group therAPy recorded their CD, “Everyday Jesus” at NPBC. The CD won 10 Stellar Gospel Music Awards (honors artists, writers, and industry professionals), two Dove Awards by the Gospel Music Association (recognizes outstanding achievement in the Christian music industry), and was nominated for a Grammy Award (Recording Academy honors).

In October 2016, further technology upgrades included a new suspended cross in the main sanctuary, light-emitting diode (LED) panels on the stage; new sound effects, plug-ins, and a new band platform for NPBC musicians. Additionally, a new IT network was installed with new access points, which doubled the WiFi capacity increasing NPBC’s bandwidth by more than 200%. Then, the New Psalmist Retreat and Meeting Center was introduced with AVL upgrades in the Banquet Hall equipping the space for functions such as weddings, conferences, meetings and other large events.

The Communications Ministry has 50 active members and two NPBC staff, Bro. Chris Landrum and Bro. Lance Harris. “It has been a pleasure working closely with many members throughout the years that have watched me grow in ministry and even aided my development in the field – not just the media profession but as a leader,” said Rev. Joshua. “With all the demands and responsibilities of ministering, having a strong team allows me to operate well in different capacities,” he continued.

The Communications Ministry has opportunities available for passionate AVL professionals who also want to serve in church ministry. New members should have a background in the AVL industry and can hit the ground running. Contact Sis. Sherrie Wood in the church office for the next ministry meeting.

New PsalmistVIDEO ONDEMAND

By: Elliott Jenkins

I was in church at the 7:15 service one Sunday when the video screen displayed a notice about npbc.tv. I’m a Baby Boomer – barely comfortable with smartphones, apps, tablets, or whatever, and now here we go again – something new for me to learn!

Jesus didn’t limit how we are to carry out the Great Commission: . . . Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. – Matthew 28:19, 20, and as Rev. Joshua Thomas said, “Technology expands the reach of the message.” So, it is time for me to get with the program!

I thought npbc.tv was just another website. Man, was I wrong! Npbc.tv is NPBC’s Video On Demand network or as Rev. Thomas calls it, “New Psalmist Netflix.” For those of us born B.C. (before computers), it can be described as an online video library. From the practical perspective, it’s an extension of the Empowering Disciples mission of our church. Wherever you are

in the world, if you have access to the Internet, you can access npbc.tv.

At present, npbc.tv includes more than 300 videos comprising of sermons, lectures, Bible classes, worship services, Fine Arts Ministry productions, and other original content available for viewing. Content is added regularly. The most recent events held at NPBC as well as some events as far back as 1986 are available for your viewing pleasure.

Believe me, it is a blessing to find videos and listen to recent and past sermons from many of the gospel giants who have gone to glory but preached at NPBC. I have personally watched a 1993 sermon by Bishop Thomas titled, “The Occupants of Hell,” which completely blew me away. Check it out for yourselves!

Go to www.npbc.tv or download the free app on your mobile phone. Click Sign Up Now. Enter your contact information and Create a New Account. You can search videos by category and even save your favorites.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV)

We know how essential it is to read and study God’s word but for various reasons, as Christians, we find it a daunting task to read such a huge hardcover book with challenging vocabulary and grammar. Modern technology has assisted us in overcoming these challenges by offering free Bible applications (apps) on our cell phones, tablets and computers.

A good way to start reading the Bible is to set up Bible reading plans. Plans help you engage with God’s word every day, a little at a time. There are lots of reading plan apps available on mobile devices. One is the YouVersion Bible App by LifeChurch, which claims to be the #1 rated Bible app and boasts of having features where your personalized highlights, bookmarks, and notes can be synced to your device.

Another great reading plan app is the Daily Bible App by idailybread.org. This app encourages reading twice daily for only 10 minutes each. It provides a daily verse, devotions, thoughts, and prayers. Once installed on your device and opened, there are verse, devotion, and plan headings.

Both apps provide Bible reading plans on various topics such as: marriage, prayer, fasting, dating and divorce, all at different lengths. You can set the pace for reading yourself, or have scriptures read to you via audio. You can also set up a profile, add friends from your list of contacts, and share content with your social media followers.

Bible reading plans are even available for groups. The apps pull scriptures together that pertain to your group’s subject matter, and show each participant’s reading progress as well as shares notes within the group in a discussion like setting.

“To add a little fun to the Bible reading plan experience, ‘badges’ are awarded in the form of special icons in your plan profile for reaching milestones such as finishing a Bible reading plan, sharing Bible verses with friends, and bookmarking your favorite Bible verses. Badges are meant to signify an accomplishment or special activity regarding your interaction with the Bible.”

Who would have ever thought that giving at church would be so easy! Not only is giving easier in the 21st Century than in past years, but the process is more valuable. Technology has changed the landscape of how we submit our tithes and offerings. PushPay® and Givelify® are two selected mobile apps that NPBC uses to make church giving easier.

Open Pushpay or Givelify on your iPhone, iPad or Android device. Both apps enable convenient mobile payments between the church and the giver. Once you are a registered user, you can choose the name of the church in which you want to give and how much. Enter a passcode to approve the transaction and you are done.

It is truly as easy as 1-2-3. From out of town, on the go, in church service, or from the comfort of your home, three taps on your device and

it is done. You can also customize the app to capture your giving history and other data for tax purposes.

The Bible declares that to obey is better than to sacrifice.

There are blessings in obedience and giving.

As we strive for excellence in our lives, Bishop Thomas often speaks about automating our important tasks. A great example of this is creating mobile app accounts on our devices for church giving and enabling its settings to function intuitively. This ensures that we make giving back to God a priority and not an after thought. So make some time today and sign up for mobile giving on Push Pay.

MOBILE APPS FOR

“Cash. Check. Kiosk. Text. Online. Pushpay technology is designed to strategically drive giving

to mobile, allowing anyone to give a gift anytime, anywhere.”

“The Givelify mobile giving app is faster than online giving and easier than text-to-give, making it the best option

during service or on the go.”

“The Bible declares that to obey is better than to sacrifice. There are blessings in

obedience and giving.”

“I realize that it doesn’t take a lot of big things to change a marriage, but it’s the little things, daily, that count the most.”

By: Yvette Curtis-Brown

Marriage isn’t easy. Although some couples make it look easy, it isn’t. Whether you’re in a difficult marriage or not, engaged to be married, or seriously considering marriage, “The Marriage App: Unlocking the Irony of Intimacy,” created by Drs. Paul and Virginia Friesen, founders of Home Improvement Ministries (H.I.M.), may be a good resource for you. It’s not a visually stunning app but it has a lot of substance.

The Marriage App is a daily reminder to do something good for your marriage and to stop waiting on your spouse to make changes. You’re responsible, too. The app includes a new theme each week, and a different topic each day. Upon completion of that week, a new theme unlocks.

For example, “Care for the One You Love,” is the Week 1 theme. Every day in that week, you receive a different topic called, APPlication:

Each day includes a short devotional, scripture, and assignment (which may include writing your spouse an email, sending a card, calling or texting).

I suggest reading through each day’s topic first because some assignments may take some planning, re-arranging or substituting. The Marriage App forces you to think about the good things in your marriage and to act on them!

I personally use the Marriage App and highly recommend it. The assignments take faith and work (like putting aside pride). I’ve learned that deciding to do good for my marriage is not about my husband. I can’t, and no longer want to, change him. It’s about changing myself, working on my marriage, and pleasing God.

I realize that it doesn’t take a lot of big things to change a marriage, but it’s the little things, daily, that count the most.

The Marriage App: Unlocking the Irony of Intimacy can be found in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

Wake up to God’s Word in the First 5 minutes of your day!

1. Download the app on your cell phone.2. Set the app alarm to wake you each day.3. When the alarm sounds, click Read.

You will receive a thought-provoking sentence, like, “Father, today we praise You because we are your blood-bought children.”

Then scroll to read the day’s scripture and short teaching.

For example, today’s reading: Luke 3:16 (NIV), “John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.’”

Read the teaching (a few paragraphs) in earnest, which on this day, was about how our Savior willingly entered our world to wash our sins away and guaranteed now and forever His forgiveness, hope, and healing.

Within 5 minutes, you get:A thought, Scripture reference, Short teaching, Prayer, Option to Read More, Option to Share your Moment

The First 5 app has been a blessing to my life because it helps jumpstart my day by centering my heart and mind in Christ.

What is blogging? It is the sharing of knowledge, information, and discussion about a topic on the internet. There has been a positive increase in the readership of Christian blogs, and it is noted as a marketing tool to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

People who create Christian blogs are passionate about the Word of God. Numerous Christian blogs cover topics such as activism, politics, ministries, black churches, millennials, youth, relationships and pop culture. Christian blogging is engaging and full of powerful teachings and thought-provoking opinion. Discussions are relevant for times such as these, and its diverse opinions encourage open dialog for all readers.

The power of Christian blogging enhances the Christian walk by helping believers to minister like Jesus. The New Psalmist Baptist Church Social Media Evangelism Ministry (SME) uses social media as a tool for connecting with global audiences. The ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ with lost and hurting people who may or may not have a personal relationship with God.

Sis. Hope Coleman, one of the ministry’s leaders, spoke with me about how much social media has expanded and strengthened NPBC’s outreach efforts to “make life better for others.”

EDM: How important has social media become to evangelism?

EM: It is by far one of the best ways to connect with people and share the gospel message. Currently, more than 200 social media networks exist.

EDM: How has the SME Ministry expanded since we last interviewed in 2013?

EM: The ministry has successfully facilitated workshops and 6-week classes for NPBC members on “How to Share the Gospel.” As a result, we

have many new ministry members that attended the workshops/classes and had the expertise and motivation to help move the SME Ministry to the next level.

The SME Ministry has also created a Facebook Group page that started with seven members. Now the group page has more than 2,000 members around the globe including Africa, Europe and Australia. Although members can post prayers and prayer requests to the page 24/7, we created “Motivational Mondays” to encourage all SME Facebook Group members to post to the page and share inspirational messages, prayers, encouraging words and enlightening photo images every Monday. While social media evangelism cannot mend all problems that people have, it can direct believers to the “One” who can.

Our plan for 2017 is to expand our “How to Share the Gospel” class to our social media networks. This will better equip believers to evangelize to lost and hurting people. Lastly, we are planning a Social Media Meet & Greet to invite our Facebook Group members who do not have a church home

to a Sunday worship service at NPBC, then fellowship with them over light refreshments.

Join the SME Facebook Group by going to www.facebook.com/groups and searching for New Psalmist Baptist Church Social Media Evangelism Ministry.

EDM: What other social media networks does the ministry engage?

EM: We expanded our evangelism efforts to Twitter. We hold “Prayer Tweet-Ups” on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 8:30-9:30 pm using the hashtag #npbcSME. The goal is to connect with God and each other in real-time prayer and worship. Twitter followers have an opportunity to tweet and re-tweet short prayers of praise, adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication for themselves and others.

EDM: How can a New Psalmist member join the SME Ministry?

EM: Any member who has a passion and desire to share the love of Christ and has completed

their second year of Discipleship Class can join the SME Ministry. General meetings and trainings are held on the

2nd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm. Members can also contact Rev. Al Bailey at [email protected].

EDM: Sis. Hope, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to contribute information for this article!

The work of evangelism is never finished. This is why Jesus gave us the Great Commission, which is the instruction of the resurrected Jesus Christ to His disciples to spread the gospel to all the nations of the world. An ongoing opportunity exist for all of us to fill someone else’s cup with the same love and compassion God has shown us.

“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, . . . ” (Matthew 28:19 NIV)

May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. (Psalm 19:14 NIV)

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CelebrationJanuary 15th is the birthday of a great American and leader, Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. Had he lived to see it, he would have turned 88 years old. The

mark he made on American history and the African American community

cannot be denied. To honor his legacy, New Psalmist held a service on the

15th, themed, from King to Obama. In 1963, Dr. King spoke about having

a dream, and in 2009, part of that dream came true when Barack Obama

was elected as the first African American President of the United States.

As his presidency neared its end, New Psalmist came together to celebrate

all that had been accomplished.

The sanctuary was filled as persons from all over came to celebrate this

milestone. The service opened with a meaningful video about Dr. King and a

rousing rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the church choir. The Fine

Arts Ministry performed a meaningful tribute and interpretation of Dr. King’s

“I Have a Dream” speech, and U.S. Rep. Congressman Elijah Cummings

spoke about the historic presidency of Barack Obama and encouraged the

congregation not to be afraid of what’s to come.

Bishop Thomas preached a powerful sermon reminding us to stop and

celebrate the things that God has done in our lives and in our life time. When

the service was over, persons left inspired, and prepared to face the next

phase in our country’s history. As Bishop stated, it’s important to pause,

and remember what God has done for you. I’m so grateful as a church,

we were able to pause to thank God for Dr. King and for Barack Obama.

Christmas 2016 was simply magical. Our children and youth lead worship. At 7:15 service,

Ms. Taylor Lewis performed a solo dance to, “I Love the Lord” from the movie “The

Preachers Wife.” At the 9:30 and noon services, the children of the Fine Arts Ministry,

Kingdom Kidz choir and Kingdom Kidz dance ministry came together to perform the musical

“Special Delivery”. It was awesome to see our children take the lead in worship on the

Birthday of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
