1918 Spanish Influenza Deaths“Most intriguing and tragic is the new analysis by medical historians that the vast majority of poor souls who died during the 1918 Spanish influenza died not of infection but of over-dosage of a new drug just released on the market: aspirin. Today, all doctors know the lethality of high-dose aspirin, but when first released, the naïve assumption that “if some is good, more is better” resulted in trusting patients being overdosed with aspiring and bleeding to death. Iatrogenic (i.e. doctor caused) death blamed on an influenza virus.”

Salicylates and Pandemic Influenza Mortality, 1918–1919 Pharmacology, Pathology, and Historic Evidence

Karen M. Starko

The high case-fatality rate—especially among young adults—during the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic is incompletely understood. Although late deaths showed bacterial pneumonia, early deaths exhibited extremely “wet,” sometimes hemorrhagic lungs.

The hypothesis presented herein is that aspirin contributed to the

incidence and severity of viral pathology, bacterial infection, and death, because physicians of the day were unaware that the regimens (8.0–31.2 g per day) produce levels associated with hyperventilation and pulmonary edema in 33% and 3% of recipients, respectively. An Overview of Bee Venom Acupuncture in the Treatment of Arthritis

• Bee venom acupuncture (BVA), as a kind of herbal acupuncture, exerts not only pharmacological actions from the bioactive compounds isolated from bee venom but also a mechanical function from acupuncture stimulation. BVA is growing in popularity, especially in Korea, and is used primarily for pain relief in many kinds of diseases.

• The anti-inflammation and analgesic actions of BVA were proved in various kinds of animal arthritic models.

• Two randomized controlled trials and three uncontrolled clinical trials showed that BVA was effective in the treatment of arthritis. It is highly likely that the effectiveness of BVA for arthritis is a promising area of future research.

ALS - LOU GEHRIG’S DISEASE

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a paralyzing disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration and death of motor neurons and occurs both as a sporadic and familial disease. Mutant SOD1 (mtSOD1) in motor neurons induces vulnerability to the disease through protein misfolding, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage, cytoskeletal abnormalities, defective axonal transport- and growth factor

signaling, excitotoxicity, and neuro-inflammation.

Anti-Inflammation: BVT and ALSABSTRACT• Bee venom has been used in the practice of Oriental medicine and

evidence from the literature indicates that BV plays an anti-inflammatory or anti-nociceptive role against inflammatory reactions associated with arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.

Conclusion• From these findings, our research suggests BV could be a potential

therapeutic agent for anti-neuroinflammatory effects in an animal model of ALS.

Melittin and ALS – Anti-Inflammation

Melittin is a 26 amino acid protein and is one of the components of bee venom which is used in traditional Chinese medicine to inhibit of cancer cell proliferation and is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects.

The purpose of the present study was to determine if melittin could suppress motor neuron loss and protein misfolding in the hSOD1G93A mouse, which is commonly used as a model for inherited ALS.

The present work demonstrates that melittin reduces neuroinflammatory events

BVT and HeartDespite its well documented anti-inflammatory property, there are no reports regarding the influence of Bee Venom on the expression of cellular adhesion molecules in the vascular endothelium…anti-inflammatory process induced by BV…. The BV group had decreased levels of total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in their serum, compared to the LPS/fat group….The amount of cytokines reduced consistently in the BV treatment groups compared with those in LPS/fat group. BV significantly reduced the amount of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and fibronectin in the aorta, compared with the LPS/fat group (p < 0.05). A similar pattern was also observed in the heart.

In conclusion, BV has anti-atherogenic properties via its lipid-lowering and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Bee venom reduces atherosclerotic lesion formation via anti-inflammatory mechanism.

BVT and Brain InflammationBee venom (BV), which is extracted from honeybees, is used in traditional Korean medical therapy. Several groups have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effects of BV in osteoarthritis both in vivo and in vitro. Glutamate is the predominant excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system (CNS). Changes in glutamate release and uptake due to alterations in the activity of glutamate transporters have been reported in many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. …. Furthermore, BV significantly inhibited the cellular toxicity of glutamate, and pretreatment with BV altered MAP kinase activation (e.g., JNK, ERK, and p38) following exposure to glutamate. These findings suggest that treatment with BV may be helpful in reducing glutamatergic cell toxicity in neurodegenerative diseases.

BVT and Pancreas Inflammation

The major compound of bee venom, melittin, has been used as an anti-inflammatory reagent for decades. However, the potential of melittin to ameliorate acute pancreatitis (AP) is unknown. Our aim was to investigate the effect of melittin on cerulein-induced AP. Pre- and post-treatment with melittin inhibited histological changes in the pancreas and lungs during cerulein-induced AP. …In accordance with the results of in vivo experiments, melittin reduced cerulein-induced cell death, and production of inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, our results suggest that melittin attenuated AP and AP-associated lung injury through the inhibition of JNK activation.

Melittin inhibits cerulein-induced acute pancreatitis via inhibition of the JNK pathway.

BVT and Liver Inflammation

Acute hepatic failure remains an extremely poor prognosis and still results in high mortality. Therefore, better treatment is urgently needed. Melittin, a major component of bee venom, is known to inhibit inflammatory reactions induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in various cell types. … treatment of melittin attenuated the increase of inflammatory cytokines…. Melittin significantly inhibited the expression of caspase and bax protein levels as well as cytochrome c release in vivo. In addition, melittin prevented the activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) induced by GalN/LPS. These results clearly indicate that melittin provided protection against GalN/LPS-induced acute hepatic failure through the inhibition of inflammatory cytokines and apoptosis.

BVT and Liver FibrosisLiver fibrosis represents a process of healing and scarring in response to chronic liver injury. Following injury, an acute inflammation response takes place resulting in moderate cell necrosis and extracellular matrix damage. Melittin, the major bioactive component in the venom of honey bee Apis mellifera, is a 26-residue amphipathic peptide with well-known cytolytic, antimicrobial and proinflammatory properties…. Melittin suppresses the expression of proinflammatory cytokines through the nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathway…. Melittin prevents TAA-induced liver fibrosis by inhibiting liver inflammation and fibrosis, the mechanism of which is the interruption of the NF-κB signaling pathway. These results suggest that melittin could be an effective agent for preventing liver fibrosis.

Melittin attenuates liver injury in thioacetamide-treated mice through modulating inflammation and fibrogenesis. Park JH1, et al Exp Biol Med (Maywood). 2011 Nov;236(11):1306-13. doi: 10.1258/ebm.2011.011127. Epub 2011 Oct 3.

BVT and Prostate CancerBee venom has been used as a traditional medicine to treat arthritis, rheumatism, back pain, cancerous tumors, and skin diseases. However, the effects of bee venom on the prostate cancer and their action mechanisms have not been reported yet.

Bee venom (1-10 µg/ml) and melittin (0.5-2.5 µg/ml) inhibited cancer cell growth through induction of apoptotic cell death in LNCaP, DU145, and PC-3 human prostate cancer cells. These effects were mediated by the suppression of constitutively activated NF-κB. …Therefore, these results indicated that bee venom and melittin could inhibit prostate cancer in in vitro and in vivo, and these effects may be related to NF-κB/caspase signal mediated induction of apoptotic cell death.Anti-cancer effect of bee venom in prostate cancer cells through activation of caspase pathway via inactivation of NF-κB. THE FINAL COMMON TARGET PATHWAY is….

INFLAMMATION !

Thymoquinone inhibits the IL-6-induced proliferation of MM cells AND suppresses STAT3 phosphorylation and the expression of its downstream signaling effectors Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL. By inhibiting STAT3, TQ also had a strong effect on many other bad guys in myeloma, such as cyclin D1, the Bcl family, survivin, Mcl-1 and VEGF. CX CL 12 is a powerful cytokine which

activates white blood cells during acute or chronic inflammatory process and resides in bone marrow – it feels bones instruction and angiogenesis.

The anti-tumor effects of thymoquinone have also been investigated in tumor xenograft mice models for colon, prostate, pancreatic and lung

cancer.

The combination of thymoquinone and conventional chemotherapeutic

drugs could produce greater therapeutic effect as well as reduce the toxicity of the latter.

In this review, we summarize the anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects of thymoquinone with a focus on its molecular

targets, and its possible role in the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer.

Summary: BVT is a double edged Sword

1) We need both inflammation and anti-inflammation

2) Excessive and chronic of either polarity is not healthy

3) The balance of inflammation depends upon the health and nutritional inventory of the patient.

4) BVT is like “the jockey”; eating seeds is like “the trainer”;

5) Prepare the patient BEFORE starting BVT- No alcohol and Rehydrate- Clean up the diet (add honey propolis pollen)- Supplement: Vitamin C, Vitamin B5, SOUL, Clear TRS- Eat the seeds (organic, raw, non-GMO)
