Good News Inspiration for Daily Life September 29 If Christ did not want to dismiss the Jews without food in the desert for fear that they would collapse on the way, it was to teach us that it is dangerous to try to get to heaven without the bread of Heaven. ~St Jerome (347-420), Priest, historian, Patron of archeologist and students, Feast Day September 30

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the past century, a desire to recover a deep sense of unity among all believers in Christ has grown. The “ecumenical movement” (from the Greek word meaning the “the whole inhabited world”) began among Protestant Christians, but was given great energy in 1920 with a letter from the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, calling for closer dialogue and cooperation among Christians. In 1960, Pope John XXIII invited Protestant and Orthodox observers to the Second Vatican Council. In 1964, the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism named these Christians “separated brethren,” a huge leap forward from the time of labeling them as “outside the Church.” A year later, a new pope, Paul VI, and the Orthodox Patriarch officially nullified the condemnations that walled off East from West for nine hundred years. The pace and optimism of the 1960s has sadly waned, and the signs of progress toward unity are few; yet there are wider agreements on sharing Communion among various Christian denominations, and among Protestants agreements regarding sharing of ecclesiastical life and ministry. Among the success stories of the ecumenical movement are greater cooperation among Christian clergy, a similar Lectionary for Protestants and Catholics, and even experiments in the monastic life and common worship. —James Field, Copyright © J. Business Meeting every 2nd Monday of each month at 6:00pm in Dollinger Hall. Family Night meets every 4th Monday of each month at 6:30pm in Dollinger
Hall. ALL PARISHIONERS ARE INVITED. Bring your favorite covered dish.
Note from Pastor: We continue to unite in prayer and support with our family, friends, and neighbors recovering from the damage caused by Tropical Storm Imelda. Initial reports are that several diocesan properties were affected. The biggest damage happened at St. Mary, Fannett. All parish buildings suffered significant flooding and will be closed until extensive repairs can be made. It was only this year that the parish was able to resume activities in all its buildings following Hurricane Harvey in 2017. There was major flooding at the rectory at Our Lady of Lourdes in Vidor with minor flooding in the church. Assumption Church in Beaumont and St. Maurice in Mauriceville had flooded parish halls, but no damage in the church. Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School in Beaumont had extensive flooding, more than during Harvey. Classes will resume this Monday, Sep. 30, while the recovery process is underway. There was no damage to the new residence on the Holy Family Retreat Center, and damage to other diocesan properties was fairly minimal. Thank you to all who donated to the Southeast Texas Food Bank last weekend at Mass. They will be stretched over the next several months as people are in more need of food and help. You can contact them directly at setxfoodbank.org or 409.839.8777 to find out ways to help. Also, you can contact Catholic Charities at Southeast Texas at catholiccharitiesbmt.org 409.924.4400 or follow their Facebook page for regularly updated information about what donation needs they have, as well as volunteer opportunities. May God bless all who are suffering and all who are helping. He is with us in the storms!
