    Course description:

    This course is intended to give students first approach to computer, hardware and software and the use

    of internet. Microsoft Office suite is used to teach students computer basics, including Word processing,

    spreadsheets, and power point.

    Learning outcomes:

    After successfully completing this course, students are expected to come away with:

    Practical 1: Windows 7 taskbar, show Desktop, Start Menu, pin, jump lists, Snap

    Practical 2: Windows Search, Library, Preview Document in Folder, Burn to a CD or Send as

    Email

    Module 6: Office automation -Ms Word 2007 (12 hours)

    Practical 1& Practical 2: Getting started

    Microsoft Office Button, the Ribbon (Formerly the Toolbars), Quick Access Toolbar, opening

    and closing a Document, saving a Document using Save As and Save, Working on Multiple

    Documents, Document Views (print view, web layout, and others), Working with Text,

    working with menus.

    Practical 3: Formatting text and paragraphs

    Styles, Changing Font and Size, Font Styles and Effects, Changing Text Color, Highlight Text,

    Copy Formatting, Clear Formatting, Change Paragraph Alignment, Indent Paragraphs, Add

    Borders and Shading, Apply Styles, Create Links, Change Spacing Between Paragraphs and

    Lines.

    Practical 4: Working with tables and lists

    Create a Table, Enter data in a Table, Modify the Table Structure and Format a Table,

    Bulleted and Numbered Lists, Nested Lists, Formatting Lists.

    Practical 5: Graphics

    Symbols and Special Characters, Equations, Illustrations, Pictures, Smart Art, Watermarks.

    Practical 6: Page Formatting

    Modify Page Margins and Orientation, Apply a Page Border and Color, Insert Common

    Header and Footer Information, Create a Page Break, Insert a Cover Page, Insert a Blank

    Page.

    Module 7: Office automation -Ms Excel 2007 (10 hours)

    Practical 1: Workbooks and worksheets - copy paste and move data/sheets (from the

    internet, within the same book and in different ones).

    Practical2: Text editing, column and row fitting. Data, text and dates, freeze, hide and split

    columns/rows (the Window menu), auto complete, auto fill and auto correct

    Practical 3: printing view, centering, format painter, cell merging, alignment, wrap,

    Method of Instruction: Mix of lectures and practical.

    Assessment methods: The course assessment is based on individual and group assignments, and tests.

    The coursework weighs 60% and final exams 40%. The course work comprises one mid-semester test (15

    marks) and three laboratory practical tests (15 marks each). Final marks graded from A to C as pass, D

    and E as fail. Students who get D or E may seat for special exam.
