Objective:To learn what Newton’s first law (inertia) and centripetal force are.

Research:Force: A push or a pull. Net force(unbalanced) that causes motion.

Inertia: Force that keeps an objectdoing what it’s currently doing.

If it’s at rest: it stays at rest.If it’s in motion:it stays in motion

at the same speed and direction.

Newton’s First Law of Motion: An objectat rest or in motion remains at rest or in motion unless acted on by an unbalancedforce. Known as Law of inertia

Centripetal Force: a force that causes an object to move in a circle.

Inertia keeps the object moving in a straight line, and some other force actsto pull the object inward

Demonstration I

Write a hypothesis for how you think the cue ball should hit the 8 ball so that the coin goes out of the circle.

Watch demonstrations and write your observations.

Demonstration II (on backside) Observe the bucket half filled with

water. What are the forces acting on the bucket and on the water? Why doesn’t the water fall out of the bucket?

Activity

Tape one end of the track to the top of 2 books. Let the other end rest on the table top.

Measure the height of the books. Make a small clay ball, flatten its bottom,

and gently set it on the hood or roof of your toy car. Do not press it onto the car.

Place the dowel three car lengths from the end of the ramp.

Release the car from the top of the ramp and allow it to collide with the dowel.

Measure the distance the clay ball travels from the car.

Repeat the exercise using 4 books.Number of books
