2035 Process Analyzer – customized online monitoring of industrial processes and wastewater

Potentiometric titration and ion-selective

measurements

Titration is one of the most used methods for analysis in

almost any industry for hundreds of components varying

from acid/base analysis to metal concentrations in plat-

ing baths. Titration is an absolute chemical method –

straightforward with no need for calibration. Some titra-

tion options available for this configuration:

• Potentiometric titration

• Colorimetric titration with fiber optic technology

• Moisture determination based on the Karl Fischer

titration method

The potentiometric version of the analyzer offers the

most accurate results of all measuring techniques available

on the market.

More options for your analysis needs

The 2035 Process Analyzer for Potentiometric Titration

performs analyses with dedicated electrodes and titrants.

Additionally, this version of the 2035 Process Analyzer is

also suitable for ion-selective analysis using Metrohm

high performance electrodes.

• Standard addition technique is ideal for more

difficult sample matrices

Page 7: Industrial Process Analyzers - Dynalab

07

Thermometric titration – exclusively offered by

Metrohm

Thermometric titration is a problem solver for difficult

samples which cannot be titrated potentiometrically, and

is also the preferred technique in situations when HF is

present in samples because of the robust thermometric

sensor. Metrohm is currently the only company offering

an analyzer dedicated to performing online thermo-

metric titration.

• 100% maintenance free sensor also requires no

calibration

• Suitable for aggressive solutions (e.g. HF mixtures)

• Faster result than with conventional titration

technique

• Great for high concentration solutions and organic

solutions (e.g. Bayer Liquor, sulfate in pulp and

paper, sodium, FFA, TAN and acid mixtures)

Rapid analysis for difficult samples

Thermometric titration is by far the most robust titration

method available on the market and is excellent for 24/7

online process applications, such as the monitoring of

etching baths. Rapid analysis is possible with this tech-

nique; acid mixtures, e.g., can be analyzed in just a few

minutes.

Dependable photometric analyses

Undesired sample matrix effects such as sample color or

turbidity can be removed with differential measure-

ments, taken before and after the addition of a color

rea gent. Two options are available for photometric ana -

lysis in the 2035 Process Analyzer.

Cuvette system

The cuvette system is compact in order to reduce reagent

consumption, yet it offers a long optical path length for

high sensitivity.

• Thermostated with stirrer capabilities

• Stable over a large concentration range

Fiber optic immersion probe

The configuration with a fiber optic immersion probe

broa dens the application range substantially.

• Measurement of high concentration samples is

simpler (internal sample dilution steps)

• Smaller light path than the cuvette system

Colorimetric Measurements

The ICON Analyzer performs photometric absorption

mea surements in the visible light range. To perform more

accurate measurements, the analyzer compensates for

the color and turbidity of the sample by measuring both

before and after the addition of a color reagent. The re -

action cell is thermostated, removing ambient tempera-

ture effects from your analysis.

10 Inline real-time process analysis

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a fast, chemical-free,

spectroscopic technique in use in many industries for in-

process control (IPC) of manufacturing operations and

measuring product quality. Measurements are direct and

nondestructive. Monitoring with NIRS fits in well with

pro cess analytical technology (PAT) initiatives as pro-

posed by the FDA. Metrohm Process Analytics of fers two

versions of process NIR systems: the NIRS Ana lyzer Pro

and the NIRS XDS Process Analyzer.

NIR Spectroscopic Technique

This analytical technique is based on absorption mea-

sured in the near-infrared region of the electromagnetic

spectrum that is between the visible and the mid-infra-

red. The fundamental absorption bands of functional

groups occur in the mid-infrared and are very strong. The

overtone absorptions of these fundamental bands occur

in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region and allow direct

measurement without sample preparation due to

the relative weakness of absorption. The CH, OH, NH and

SH bonds have the strongest overtone absorbance in the

NIR re gion.

Powerful chemometrics software

All Metrohm Process Analytics NIR Analyzers are operat-

ed with Vision che mo metric software. This proprietary,

easy-to-use software can be used for comprehensive

data collection, qua litative and quantitative method

development, and diagnostics. The pharmaceutical ver-

sion is fully validatable and 21 CFR Part 11 compliant.

Integration to process regulations systems can be done

through the Metrohm OPC interface.

NIRS – Near Infrared Spectroscopy

NIRS Analyzer Pro

The NIRS Analyzer Pro is a process analysis system based

on high-resolution diode array technology. The complete

wavelength range is measured instantaneously enabling

measurements also on fast moving samples with high

accuracy. The backup lamp in the dual lamp system se -

cures uptime, and analytical accuracy is unchanged even

after switching to a new lamp.

Three configurations are available

• Direct contact

• Fiber based

• Non-contact

The NIRS Analyzer Pro helps to

• Optimize the use of raw materials

• Consistently run production closer to target

specifications

• Dedicated Systems Different fiber optic probes are avaliable

11NIRS XDS Process Analyzer

The NIRS XDS Process Analyzer provides the next genera-

tion of Process Analyzers for real-time analysis in the

pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Nondestructive,

accurate measurements are performed directly in the

pro cess line, granulator, dryer, reactor, or reaction vessel.

Single Point or Multiplexer

The NIRS XDS Process Analyzer is available as a single

point or a multiplexer configuration. Two multiplexer Pro-

cess Analyzer configurations provide for up to either four

or nine sampling points. Benefits include:

• Analyzer can be installed in an unrestricted area

• Remote measurements

• Reduced installation and operation costs

Single fiber

The SingleFiber version allows for cost-effective analysis

of a wide variety of sample types from clear liquids to

trans parent films.

• Allows long distances (100 m or more) between

analyzer and sampling point

• Beneficial for difficult or hazardous sampling areas

MicroBundle

To maintain analytical performance, fiber count is in -

creas ed as the turbidity of process sample increases. The

80-fiber count (40 illumination/40 collection fibers)

found in the MicroBundle version allows for cost-effec-

tive analysis of sample types ranging from clear liquids to

suspensions and solids.

• Microbundle cable has superior mechanical and

chemical resistance

• Fibers are temperature-insensitive

Optimized interface options

Configure the analyzer with a reflectance probe, an im -

mer sion probe or a transmission probe pair for an opti-

mized interface to your particular sample type. Other

sampling options and preconditioning setups can be

custom built by Metrohm. See page 14 for more infor-

mation.

Continuous monitoring of total organic carbon (TOC) or total carbon (TOC + TIC)

Organic compounds are found in almost all types of

water – from natural and treated drinking water to pro-

cess water, cooling water, and water used in pharmaceu-

ticals and food production. Too much organic contami-

nation in the water interferes with many industrial pro-

cesses. On the other hand, there are numerous processes

in the chemical and galvanic industries in which water is

mixed with organic additives. In order to control and

mo ni tor these processes, it is important to measure the

amount of organic substances in the water.

Due to the huge numbers of organic compounds in

wa ter, it is nearly impossible to individually identify and

mea sure each one. Instead of analyzing individual sub-

stances, a fast and precise way to rate water quality is to

measure sum parameters – this is especially helpful in the

case of online monitoring.

Some advantages of TOC

• High levels of accuracy and precision

• Small sample amounts

• Ease of process automation

• Fast measurements

12 Two configurations

The 7010 TOC Analyzer offered by Metrohm Process

Analytics measures total organic carbon in liquid with

detection by nondispersive infrared absorption (NDIR).

The analyzer can measure TOC in liquid samples ranging

from 0–5 mg/L up to 20,000 mg/L. The 7010 TOC

Analyzer is also available as a total carbon (TC) analyzer.

Along with a high volume external pump, this offers

faster response times when the total inorganic carbon

(TIC) in the sample is considered insignificant.

Robust and Reliable

The analyzer consists of two separate housing compart-

ments in order to separate the electronics from the wet

part. Samples are taken and reagents are added via the

peristaltic pumps eliminating valves which risk being blo-

cked. The autoclean, autocalibration, and autovali-

dation functions guarantee correct, reliable values that

can be reproduced at any time without the need for

manual in ter vention.

Integrated gas management

• Internal air compressor produces the carrier gas for

oxidation and detection

• Air purification occurs via an internal soda lime filter

• No need for external air treatment or a compressed

air supply, as in traditional analyzers

Page 13: Industrial Process Analyzers - Dynalab

The MARGA (Monitor for AeRosols and Gases in ambi-

ent Air) is an on-line ion chromatograph that measures

the concentration of water soluble inorganic species in

aerosols and their related gas phase components in am -

bient air.

• Hourly simultaneous results for gases and aerosols

• High sensitivity for key parameters

• Unattended online operation

• Continuous calibration with internal standard

• Automated validation of results

• Detailed system diagnostics available

Preconditioning and integrated systems

The success of a Metrohm Process Analytics analyzer

does not only depend upon the chemical analysis, but

also upon the sample preparation or preconditioning

steps. Online sample preconditioning systems from

Metrohm Process Analytics can lower maintenance costs

and help your analyses run smoothly.

Furthermore, the location of the analyzer contributes sig-

ni ficantly to the quality of the analysis. The sample needs

to be as representative as possible, which means that the

analyzer needs to be as close to the sampling point as

possible.

Metrohm Process Analytics can provide a complete and

exact so lution for almost any application due to more

than 40 years of experience in process analytics. Projects

range from one analyzer in combination with simple

sample preparation to complete turnkey packages with

shelters, piping, wiring and interfacing.

On-site, only the necessary utilities and the sample

stream need to be connected, saving a lot of time and

energy in the start-up phase of the instrument.
