Customers should talk to EA early when planning new installations or changes to their existing infrastructure. EA’s staff can provide helpful advice and also deliver the full service of connecting your plant to the network. EA’s contracting department have the tools to assist you with all your on-property needs, both underground and overhead. EA is a locally-owned co-operative company. It owns and operates the electricity distribution network across Mid-Canterbury. This supplies around 17,500 consumers across almost 3,000km of lines.

We all need electricity; it is the lifeblood of the economy and critical to running our businesses. EA’s focus on delivering safe, secure and reliable electricity ensures that you don’t have to worry about it, letting you concentrate on running your businesses and the things that really matter to you.

Managing the network is a dynamic process that requires long-range forecasting. EA’s network engineers try to foresee where load growth or decline may occur. This allows them to plan how best to deliver electricity to support the shifting demand.

The infrastructure required often has long lead times and carries significant cost. The company puts great focus on getting the right balance of infrastructure across the network. EA wants to see Mid Canterbury prosper and recognises its position in supporting that with its responsibility to deliver the power where it is needed.

Strong demand across the network, driven in particular by irrigation load has required the company to invest heavily in new and upgraded infrastructure. During this financial year alone EA plans to invest a further $13.8 million in additional network assets, improving security and resilience that ultimately benefits you and your business.

It’s for these reasons that EA likes to talk to customers early in the development phase of any project. Customer insights into their future power needs can help EA plan the future of the electricity network. It pays to talk to EA early as their specialist knowledge of the network can assist you with your planning. From dairy sheds, irrigation pumps to large factories, involve EA early to ensure that you can get the power delivered where you need it, when you need it.

Electricity Ashburton is connecting our community. Talk to them about upcoming projects and see how they can help your business grow.

Total Dairy Systems Ashburton

The only local supplier and service centrefor GenuineMilka-Ware products

Milka-Ware/Cullimore Engineering LtdAshburton’s local Milka-Ware supplier is

located with Cullimore Engineering on South Street, combining engineering prowess with technologically advanced dairy products. It is the only supplier of the popular Milka-Ware Total Dairy Systems brand milking plant and consumable products, and is the creator of the innovative CEL wireless backing gate.

Company directors Luke Maginness and Kevin and Ian Cullimore have more than 70 years combined engineering experience, and can offer dairy farmers extensive products and services to enhance their operation.

In 2008 a client approached Cullimore Engineering to build a backing gate. The brief was that it could span 17 metres and not have any troublesome cables running down the yard. Ian and Kevin Cullimore set about designing a backing gate that had a light-weight frame that utilises a parabola curve to enhance the frame, making it extremely robust.

The gate would run from solar technology, which had been used on earlier projects, along with a radio control unit. This would allow them

to eliminate any cables along the yard making it completely wireless.

The finished product is now a state-of-the-art, market-leading dairy backing gate.

Another important feature is that the Cullimore Engineering Limited (CEL) wireless backing gate operates on a low voltage 24 Vdc system. This is far safer than conventional backing gates and eliminates stray voltage caused by a backing gate which can cause major issues for your cows.

Two large batteries are charged by solar panels which even after a week or more of overcast conditions will still operate at full potential.

The low voltage motors that drive the gate have motor controllers and a PLC which controls its speeds. Cullimore Engineering is able to ramp the speed up and down to smooth out the operation, which eliminates any jerky movements and increases the life of components.

These drives also steer the gate. If one side of the gate lags behind the other it will speed it up and slow the other side to keep it tracking straight. Auto stops at the end of each yard allow

the gate to be put into reverse at the end of milking, and will stop by itself when it reaches the end of the yard.

Keeping further safety in mind, Cullimore Engineering is developing a load sensing function, which will detect when a cow is in front of the gate. Safety guards which hook around the top rail of the fence make it almost impossible for it to become derailed. A buzzer will also activate while moving and makes a different sound depending on which direction the gate is travelling in.

Milka-Ware Ashburton has worked closely with Cullimore Engineering recently with this project and between them can offer a wide range of services and in conjunction with a builder can offer a complete dairy package.

The heart of every dairy farm is the milking system, so it makes sense to have your system installed by skilled engineers who can offer a complete repair and maintenance service.

Being trained engineers and having the extensive machine and fabrication shop at their

disposal, means that they have the facilities to fabricate and repair almost anything that a dairy farmer would need done. Instead of having to replace parts, the team have the knowledge and expertise to investigate a repair first, to save their clients money.

Milka-Ware and Cullimore Engineering has the expertise to rebuild pumps based from small milk pumps and vacuum pumps to larger irrigation pumps. It will also custom-build components and fittings to suit its clients’ requirements rather than adopting a one-design-suits-all approach.

The innovative CEL backing gate has now been in operation for four seasons, with successful reports coming back from the farms putting them to use.

Five CEL wireless backing gates are currently under order for the coming season with many enquiries being made each day.

To enquire about the CEL backing gate, Milka-Ware milking products or a wide range of engineering services, call Cullimore Engineering and Milka-Ware for an all-inclusive dairy package.

Shearmac Aluminium started business in 1989 with five staff. Twenty-three years later they employ 20 highly, skilled staff, including directors Lyell Shearer and Lynne McDonald, and now have two offices in the South Island – the head office and factories are based in Methven and they also have an office in Greymouth, run by Steve Shearer.

They are ideally located to service customers in the central South Island and the West Coast.

The main focus of the business is supplying aluminium joinery to new homes, and to existing homes with customers removing older windows and upgrading to aluminium double glazing.

Moving forward with the business is extremely important to Shearmac Aluminium and they use the latest innovations, new products available on the market. One they are particularly passionate about is Thermally Broken aluminium joinery.

These are revolutionary Thermally Broken double-glazed frames which significantly improve insulation and condensation. They come with dual-colour options – mix and match profiles, colours and finishes (you can have a different colour on the inside compared to the outside colour).

It also includes Eurocote wood grain options –

which look and feel like timber. So realistic, most people can’t tell the difference!

These days with the world’s fossel fuels running out we are all trying to heat our homes with a candle, so by putting in Thermally Broken joinery it improves the thermal efficiency of your windows and doors (keeping more heat in).

Customer’s nowadays are more aware of the environment and looking after it, so look for options to increase heating (and cooling) efficiently.

Shearmac Aluminium’s very experienced staff have over 130 years collectively in the industry, so you can rest assured you will be given the best advice for you and your home or business.

They have been involved in a number of interesting projects, but probably the most exciting and challenging was the Manuka Point Luxury Lodge at the top of the Rakaia Gorge, which the company won the top residential award for in 2010 out of all the Fairview & Elite fabricators in New Zealand.

Shearmac Aluminium is proud to have its head office based in Mid Canterbury – in their view it is the power house region of New Zealand for their business.

When the big toys are churning the big boys are happy

Mid Canterbury is the grain bowl of New Zealand, accounting for more than half of New Zealand’s arable farming industry. With all of this grain needing to be harvested when conditions are just perfect, our district becomes Combine Country.

During peak harvest time, combine harvesters can be seen working day and night for days on end. The many lights illuminating the grain fields at 2am are testament to the timely fashion of getting the harvest completed as quickly as possible to ensure a successful crop. When a harvester or other farm machinery breaks down during this critical time, Combine Country is dedicated to getting it rolling again.

Combine Country has come a long way since its commencement in 1993. Back then the team was operating off the back of a truck, working on Claas combine harvesters in the field. Now it has a fully equipped workshop on Alford Forest Road, with an extensive engineering division as well as an impressive retail store. But don’t worry, if you

break down at the worst possible time, Combine Country staff will still travel to your farm for on-site repairs and maintenance. Its main priority is still to supply quick friendly service and quality parts at a reasonable price.

Combine Country has remained true to its roots, with the majority of work still performed on Claas harvesters. Through word of mouth its professional and quality workmanship has become so popular that it now works on Claas combines from North Canterbury right down to Southland and sells quality Claas parts throughout New Zealand.

The engineering workshop has expanded its services to include a wide range of fabrication and repairs to a wide range of agricultural equipment, such as augers and auger casings and worn elevator housings. Its services have even been utilised to make sheep and cattle ramps, and are open to fabricating a wide range of general farm equipment to suit the needs of the farmer.

You would think that the biggest danger facing the Combine Country team would be mechanical or engineering related, but would an errant chicken have entered your mind? One harvester that was brought into the workshop to undergo repairs had a hen on its eggs nested under the auger.

The stroppy bird was safely removed and returned to the farmer after the team put on welding gloves to protect themselves. Another example of how the team always put the needs of the farmer first.

The retail shop carries an impressive selection of the popular Powerbuilt hand tools, trusted and used by millions of home handymen, trade and industrial workers worldwide. It also has the Makita range of outdoor power equipment with numerous features designed to enhance performance and ease of use, whilst minimising environmental impact.

From chainsaws to blower vacs and lawn

trimmers, it has it all, as well as an excellent range of lawnmowers and other garden accessories.

Combine Country has diversified its business by opening an auto division called CC Auto. It features a wide range of competitively priced vehicles, including Japanese imports. CC Auto understands that sometimes an automotive purchase needs to happen quickly, so to assist in getting you on the road faster, it has finance options available.

CC Auto back up its automotive division with after-sales service second to none. It carries out a large range of car repairs and services to any make and model automobile, from oil changes to cam belts, brake repairs and fitting and balancing new and used tyres.

For your farm equipment or automobile requirements, the team at Combine Country - with CC Auto under its wing - has the experience and knowledge to exceed your expectations.

Make your life easier D&E’s proud history and exciting future

Drummond and Etheridge Ltd was formed in 1933 by Bob Drummond and Arthur Etheridge. Since then it has grown from a general repair garage to a driving force in the agricultural and automotive industry throughout the central South Island.

And the future looks bright for the company’s Nissan franchise which is undergoing an extensive makeover. The D&E’s Moore Street site in Ashburton was home to the John Deere side of the business which moved to the northern end of East Street in 2010. This move left the Nissan site with lots of space to fill and the company aim to make the most of it!

The renovations which are well underway, will mean a new entrance off Moore Street, leading to a 30-space carparking area along with a larger car yard and new showroom. As well as selling new and used vehicles D&E Nissan offers a comprehensive parts department as well as a workshop area for servicing and repairs. The site’s enhancement will bring with it more useable space and extra facilities meaning customers will benefit from an even higher

level of service. The dealership isn’t standing still while the renovations are going on with a number of new models arriving during the year. The Nissan Juke (pictured below) landed in March and caused quite a stir around town. The Juke is part SUV, part sports car and the reviews have been very positive – a common theme has been high performance and funky styling.

More recently Nissan launched its “trump card” in the ute market with the Navara 550. With 170kWs and 550Nm of torque, the STX 550 has 15.6 per cent more power than its nearest rival and 17 per cent more torque. The Navara range has always been very popular in Mid Canterbury and with the Field Day Deals running at the moment there has never been a better time to buy.

D&E has always put great emphasis on people, which comes from being family owned and operated. Staff enjoy getting to know their clients and ‘vice versa’ which has meant that over the past 78 years D&E has become one of the most trusted names in the automotive and agricultural industry.

Whether you’re a home handy-man, farmer or tradesman, Johnston’s Hire Centre has a comprehensive range of hire equipment, all tailored to assist you to get your task done quickly, and at the right price.

Derrick and Deborah Du Toit purchased Johnston’s Hire Centre in November 2005. At that stage it was a small business located in Wills Street. Derrick operated the business on his own, working six and-a-half day weeks for three years while continuing to expand the business.

Johnston’s quickly gained a reputation for reliable equipment due to Derrick’s aptitude for maintaining and repairing the machinery that was hired. If the unexpected happens and an item breaks down while a customer has it on hire, Johnston’s will do everything possible to get it up and running as quickly as they can, and in most cases Derrick can visit the worksite to repair on location. With a friendly personality to match, Johnston’s has become the place to hire quality equipment where the owner always goes out of his way to make you feel welcome.

This exceptional service means that the demand to hire from Johnston’s keeps steadily increasing, so Johnston’s has continued to purchase new equipment to meet the growing needs of clients. Over the six and-a-half years that Derrick and Deborah have been in business, they have moved

location twice to allow for more room to provide a larger range. They are now located at custom-built premises on West Street. The spacious location has raised the profile of the business, but has also provided a better experience for their customers by ensuring a smoother operation. As well as increasing the amount of equipment available to hire, Derrick and Deborah hired Glenn in 2008, who is still with the business

today. Due to the increased demand for weekend hire, they also hired Bones who works on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to provide weekend assistance.

Derrick and Deborah are on site every day and are integral to the day-to-day running of the business. They like to make the workplace enjoyable for everyone and enjoy

having a laugh. This fun atmosphere translates to providing a positive experience for their customers. Johnston’s are constantly listening to their clients’ suggestions on what hire items they would like to see available, and if a common theme emerges, then they do their best to add that item to stock. You will be happy to know that there are no hidden charges, competitive rates are given and you will receive an accurate quote to budget your project to perfection. Demonstrations and advice on equipment usage is all part of the service. For your next project, call Johnston’s Hire Centre to have a full solution catered to the demands of your job.

Testimonial“Johnston’s Hire Centre on many occasions has gone out of its way to solve my hireage problems. Derrick and the team understand how critical it can be within the industry I work in to get equipment quickly, and have been more than flexible at helping us out at short notice. The crew is always helpful, so I didn’t hesitate to use their services personally for my wedding in February”.

South Island Seed Dressing is Mid Canterbury’s premier destination for ensuring seed is processed and treated to meet strict export requirements.

Established in 1991, South Island Seed Dressing is an independent seed-dressing company, providing a seamless transition for growers and seed companies, from the seed leaving the field, to being packaged and exported to several Global destinations, enforcing rigorous controls to ensure premium quality.

The business was started by Rob Clarke and the late Robert Woodham, who saw an opportunity in the local market to provide a premium seed dressing operation, the Company has grown significantly in the past 20 years and offers a complete service that growers can rely on to produce premium results that enhance their returns.

Because of their independence, South Island Seed Dressing processes a large variety of seeds for many growers and seed companies and only performs the steps of processing that each individual variety of seed requires.

Ryegrass, specialist grasses, clovers, brassicas, cereals, pulses and vegetable seeds are all processed at South Island Seed Dressings, which has seven seed processing lines and two seed treatment plants to ensure a fast service for every variety.

It offers the complete range of services to seed, starting with the transportation from the field under the Seed Safe brand. Using its own swing lift, high cube containers are lowered to the ground on-site for the farmer to auger

seed directly into via the hatches on top. The container is then collected and transported back to the store for storage or processing.

The grower can choose to dry its own crop; otherwise South Island Seed Dressing can dry the crop to ensure optimum moisture content for a long shelf life. Some specialist seeds require moisture content to be as low as 6 per cent.

The seed is then processed to remove impurities and to create uniformity and even, homogenous seed lines. Some Seed has insecticides applied after cleaning, the seed treatment is an effective way of protecting the grower’s investment in new crops, designed to help maximise plant establishment. The insecticide is film-coated on to the seed, is cost-effective and environmentally friendly, while promoting disease protection for the first three or four weeks after the seed is planted, while it is emerging through the ground.

Different types of seeds can be mixed to designer specifications to produce unique pastures for the buyer. South Island Seed Dressing also offer a blending service, via its two mixers.

The seed can be packaged to the grower’s specifications, in a number of different mediums, from small bags to one tonne bulk bags and full container loads.

South Island Seed Dressings specialise in packaging seed to high humidity climates in specialised packaging that helps eliminate moisture getting into the product, therefore extending the life of the seed. After the seed is packaged, South Island Seed Dressing can

transport it to any destination as per the grower or seed company’s requirements through an established and reliable transportation arm.

The seed can be stored if required, due to over-production or waiting until market conditions are favourable for export. It has 24,000 square metres of warehousing and 800 shipping containers for farmer dressed storage. It also has 110 steel silos for bulk storage and 5000 wooden storage bins.

To keep track of inventory, South Island Seed Dressing implement a computerised inventory system, with the ability to quickly locate lines of product.

This same system is also used for the invoicing, creating a streamlined service for its employees

Laser Electrical and Plumbing is well known for providing totally dependable residential services, but the skills that have seen the business thrive into many successful divisions were born from years of industrial development.

Managing Director Brent Christie was born into the electrical trade, and started learning about wiring and current from a young age. His father Les started Christie Electrical back in 1980, and Brent was keen to absorb his dad’s knowledge and expertise. In 1989 Les and Brent enrolled in a course at Christchurch Polytechnic to learn about a new electrical control system called a programmable logic controller (PLC). The PLC is a digital computer used for automation of electromechanical processes, such as control of machinery on factory assembly lines. PLCs are used in many industries and machines, but in the late eighties, they were relatively new in the industry, and the demand was unknown.

Les and Brent were curious to learn more, and before the end of the course that they were on, they had already installed their first PLC. One of the earlier PLC’s that Les and Brent installed in 1990 was at Five Star Beef in Wakanui. The PLC was installed to control the grain intake and handling system. More than twenty years later, that same PLC is still in operation today.

Brent was keen to expand his knowledge and experience within this technical industry, and spent three years in Australia working on large projects and partaking in further training.

In 2003 Christie Electrical joined the Laser franchise and started trading as Laser Electrical Ashburton. With the growth of the company, Laser Electrical later saw the need to split into specialist divisions. Today the experienced

Industrial and Commercial team service more than 400 PLC units nationally, as well as four in Australia and one soon bound for Rarotonga.

PLC’s vary in complexity depending on the tasks it is built to handle. An example of a basic PLC designed by laser Electrical can be found on the Pluck’s ADR500 effluent system. When an effluent pond becomes full, the PLC turns on the pump and the rotary screen which sifts the rubbish out of the effluent. When the pond is empty, the PLC will then flush fresh water through the system for five minutes. It displays simple lights to demonstrate which part of the process it is currently operating.

A more complex PLC that was designed and installed by Laser Electrical can be found in Ashburton Contracting’s readymix concrete plant. Here the PLC is attached to a desk top computer, and through the software installed on the computer, the commands tell the PLC the exact measurement of each component required for the concrete mix. The PLC will then control the scales, auger and conveyor to flow the concrete components directly into the concrete truck. The PLC has the ability to monitor volumes to a very high level of accuracy. More recently Laser Electrical installed a PLC at Winslow Feed’s palleting plant. This plant is controlled by SCADA graphics software with the PLC, and is capable

of productivity reporting. The Ashburton District Council and Ashburton Contracting Limited rely on PLC’s installed by Laser Electrical to monitor the Ashburton District’s water supply. Currently a fourth PLC is being installed with touch-screen

technology, which in the future will link all water stations together, for a more efficient control of the district’s water supply.

The PLC’s test the water’s PH level, they control the chemical additives into the water supply, which can easily be altered by the operator, and if anything triggers an alert, the PLC will send the alert to the alarm system. The addition of a PLC gives the operator functionality, ease of use and control over the plant.

Brent is passionate about the technology and how it can increase the productivity of a business, so he has trained many of his employees in the programming and installation of PLC’s and their software. Laser Electrical currently have 18 different types of software to ensure the customers plant is operating to its full potential and has local back-

up. Jaco Pretorius is the manager of the industrial and commercial division, and has built extensive knowledge and experience on how PLC’s can simplify and improve productivity of a business.

Control systems are also making a move into the residential scene, with security, light and entertainment systems more often becoming operated from a PLC system. Laser Electrical have specialist technicians who are qualified in the programming and monitoring of security and home automation systems. PLC’s are making a large impact on the dairy industry, with more and more being installed to control milking systems and irrigation systems.

GSM control units can be installed by Laser Electrical to work with tank levels or cool room faults etc and text or email faults and productivity conditions. Through the industrial prowess that Laser Electrical has established throughout the district from the installation of PLC’s, they fast gained a reputation for being able to handle the big jobs.

It was this reputation that led to them being the nominated electrical contractor for the Trustpower Highbank Power Station project. The 7.5 mega watt power station pumps five cubic metres of water per second up the pen stock, returning water into the RDR. Laser Electrical had only eight weeks to complete the project, which included extensive electrical work as well as the PLC that operates the large motors. The team pulled together, burning a lot of midnight oil to complete the project within the required timeframe, which took approximately 2000 hours. Laser Electrical remain at the forefront of electrical innovation, to keep the powerhouse of Mid Canterbury churning. Combining the innovation and experience of the electrical division with a separate plumbing branch, Laser is now well positioned to provide a totally dependable service to all of its clients.

Taking pride and supplying the bestBy Rainer Irrigation

Rainer Irrigation has evolved over the past 23 years into a one-stop irrigation shop, covering design, supply and installation through to full back-up service. The privately owned company is now one of the largest irrigation companies in the South Island with 90 experienced staff with all the resources necessary to tackle any job, big or small.

Rainer Irrigation cut its teeth with the design and manufacture of the famous RotoRainer. This leading boom irrigator is a familiar sight on many farms around the district and has been for over 30 years. These reliable workhorses have played a major role in making Mid Canterbury the farming hub it is today.

There are over 4500 RotoRainers, and counting, of various models around the country. Every winter many owners of older RotoRainers are organising to have them brought back to the factory for a full recondition. They are fully stripped, checked, serviced, painted and fitted with any additions as sought by the customer. They then roll out of the factory looking the same way they did many years prior. There will always be an application for the RotoRainer and we are constantly looking at ways to increase efficiency and performance.

Rainer Irrigation’s latest creation is the PW100 gun irrigator, designed and manufactured in house by the team at the Ashburton factory. Capable of 700m runs at low pressures, this machine can work in conjunction with pivot systems. The introduction of the PW100 means Rainer has every irrigation option covered. Rainer complements this part of their business well by being the distributor of Angus Layflat hose and Trailco irrigators and fittings.

With the development of technology and efficiency demands, came the introduction of centre pivot and lateral irrigation. Rainer Irrigation adapted to incorporate this and started a pivot division 10 years ago. They are now the importer and distributor of Zimmatic Centre Pivots and laterals. Managing director Gavin Briggs said: “We have been working with Zimmatic for about five years now; in that time we have found them to be very easy to deal with. They are at the leading edge of research and development in the irrigation industry so we see a lot of options to suit any application.” Variable rate irrigation is a developing market and more and more people are opting for this level of efficiency.

Rainer Irrigation has several in-house build crews which are responsible for the installation of new pivots and laterals. GPS guided systems are becoming more and more popular with Rainer Irrigation leading the way in New Zealand with the implementation of this technology. It has a separate service team responsible for breakdowns and winter servicing. These crews cover almost every corner of the South Island from the West Coast to Southland.

Rainer Irrigation’s experienced pivot service manager, Chris Tull, said it repairs and maintains several different pivot makes but find Zimmatic to be the most reliable. “We get great support from the manufacturers and are kept up to speed with the changing technology. We hold an extensive stock of parts in house and have a team of experienced technicians. With our resources we can really minimise downtime”.

Back-up service is a big part of Rainer Irrigation’s operation with a fleet of 60 vehicles including hiabs, diggers, telelifters and fully equipped service trucks. They provide repairs and maintenance for RotoRainers, mainline, centre pivots, pumps, effluent systems and electrical gear so clients can be confident they are getting looked after during the busy irrigation season. Having the luxury of combining resources across the board, saves the client hassle, time and money co-ordinating another company to work on the job.

Many of the Rainer Irrigation team come from a farming background so know the day-to-day pressures of running a farm which has to carry on regardless of breakdowns. Staff see it as their responsibility to help the farmer get up and running as quickly and efficiently as possible. The service teams travel the length of the island every winter performing maintenance checks to help minimise equipment breakdown for clients during the irrigation season. The fastest growing department is the electrical division

which now has six members including department manager Scott Ashdowne, three field electricians (one of which is an electrical inspector) one specialist switchboard builder and an apprentice, all of which are specifically trained in the irrigation industry.

“For efficiency reasons, we are pushing for more multi-pump systems rather than single large pumps. This type of system is more energy efficient, using the least amount of KWs as the demand varies as well as having back-up in the event of pump failure,” Scott said.

Our electrical department has developed Smart Pumping Software utilising our Datalogger as a dual controller logging flow as per ECan’s requirements as well as VSD control and pump cascading. This type of cascading system allows us to have a constant pressure system but keeping under the requirements of the network providers in regards to the Harmonic issue.

Many owners of older systems are opting to retro fit this new technology to their existing VSD systems for better and smoother control of their pumping system. This department means Rainer Irrigation can take care of its clients from the power pole to the irrigator.

Effluent has been a big part of Rainer Irrigation’s service for many years. It has been manufacturing the Briggs model 10 and 15 effluent spreaders for decades, with over 3000 having been sold. These units are still the preferred way of spreading effluent for many farm owners, from one end of New Zealand to the other and across the globe. With pivot irrigation and the tightened regulations from ECan, Rainer Irrigation has developed its effluent department to adopt these changes and can supply, install and service a wide range of effluent equipment and dispersal options.

“Pivot irrigation has added a whole new dimension to effluent disposal. We have VRI (Variable Rate Irrigation) as a tool so placement of effluent can be guaranteed to ensure regulations are met as per governing councils. Each system is designed and tailored for our clients as not everybody is the same. Emphasis is on simplicity and reliability,” Gavin said.

Rainer Irrigation is heavily involved with the supply, installation and verification of flow meters. It imports its own flowmeter and supplies its own datalogger, which it guarantees will fulfil customer needs. ECan has advised that the deadline for the implementation of water meters on water takes of 20L/s or over will be November 10, 2012. Rainer Irrigation has a team devoted to pumps and flowmeters led by pump manager Matthew Hancox. He has assigned an experienced team solely for the installation and verification of the flowmeters to ensure clients comply and meet this deadline. Matt and his team have a great deal of knowledge of pumps including submersible pumps, surface pumps, effluent pumps, domestic pumps and pressure systems.

With all new irrigation systems the focus is on efficiency. The design team at Rainer Irrigation has five members who use computer software to hydraulically design and analyse projects to suit the clients’ needs and maximise efficiency whether it be irrigation, stockwater, effluent or sprinklers. They also have the trained staff in house to perform efficiency evaluations on irrigation systems to monitor and improve performance. In a few weeks’ time Rainer Irrigation will be attending the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays which are held each year at the Mystery Creek Event Centre, just outside Hamilton. This is the largest agribusiness exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere with over 1000 exhibitors displaying their products. The company has been a familiar face at this event for 23 years.

“Not only is this a great opportunity to showcase the Rainer name and products but it also gives us the opportunity to see what new innovations are hitting the market, keep up with technology and extend our network of contacts,” Gavin said.

Rainer Irrigation aims to future proof the client and add value to their business by the supply of top quality products, expertise and back up service second to none. TE

Pluck’s Engineering was forged, quite literally, from a small workshop located on Railway Terrace in Rakaia. A dirt floor, drafty iron walls and a seething furnace rang to the sound of metal striking metal as an array of farm machinery was manufactured or repaired. A man bent over the old coal furnace, sweat dripping from his dirty brow was Graham Pluck, while his two sons Neil and Bruce would join their father in the workshop, drilling holes, bending pipe and hammering hot metal in the forge. It is this encouragement and support from a young age that would see Neil developing the skills and passion to lead Pluck’s through the new millennium.

Forty-six years since its inception, Graham’s son Neil has continued his father’s legacy and Pluck’s Engineering remains at the forefront of farm machinery and dairy effluent system innovation.

With a strong passion for achievement and discovery, unlike many young men, Neil didn’t have a list of places he wanted to see, but instead a list of whom he wanted to be. He strived to become a world class welder and was contracted as a spec welder on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. As a keen skier, Neil then worked at the Remarkables in Queenstown as maintenance personnel, craving the experience in a different industry. After building his own jet boat with his father in the workshop in Rakaia, his passion for jet boating also led him to drive jet boats in Queenstown during the summer. With a fancy for large machinery and an element of danger, Neil moved to Western Australia to work in underground gold mining.

A winter skiing holiday led Neil back home, where he discovered his dad was working long, hard hours in the workshop. Neil gave his father

a helping hand and ended up staying, to continue his life in the town he loves. It is a combination of the guidance and encouragement from his parents, as well as the skills and knowledge he absorbed through his travels that has been the inspiration behind the innovation of Pluck’s Engineering.

One of the fundamental successes of Pluck’s Engineering has been the ability to identify a trend in the market, manufacture the product required and then make it better.

Pluck’s philosophy is to design a system to do exactly as it is supposed to do, by keeping in mind the daily routine of the end user, which in most cases is a farmer. Once a system is designed, Pluck’s continue the development and keep the innovation going, by asking them selves “how can we make this better”.

The success of the business is also dependant on the team of experienced and passionate people that work at Pluck’s Engineering.

Neil supports the individual growth of his employees as much as possible, both personally and professionally. He encourages seminars and trade courses that will up-skill his team, and

bases much of his own management on self-improvement.

Two management systems that Pluck’s is currently utilising is the theory of constraints, and lean manufacturing. Through lean manufacturing the business has developed systems that enable it to only manufacture what is required, rather than making excess items for stock, while still maintaining an excellent service.

The theory of constraints has seen improvements in the layout of the work environment for everyone at Pluck’s Engineering.

Everything has its correct place and is labelled according to where items should be. This clean and well organised environment has increased productivity and reduced stress levels for employees.

The system that Pluck’s are most recognised for nationally and internationally is its dairy effluent system, a combination of separate innovations which can be used individually or together to manage effluent from storage to spread, keeping the entire process clean, efficient, cost effective and environmentally sound.

The process starts with the revolutionary Enviro Saucer, originally invented by Neil’s father, which is the primary storage component for the effluent. A small model stirrer blends the effluent.

The blended effluent is then pumped into the screening plant, where Pluck’s revolutionary Rotary Screen sifts the rubbish out, allowing only pure effluent to pass to the catchment pond ready for irrigation. As with all items developed by Pluck’s it has also been developed as energy efficient as possible, running off a tiny 0.40kw of power, and it is maintenance-free and self-cleaning. The effluent is then delivered into a second catchment pond, with a larger model stirrer, which keeps the effluent in suspension making it biologically active.

This system is complete when used in conjunction with the Pluck’s patented LP35E Effluent Irrigator, the most accurate and even spreading effluent irrigator available in New Zealand. Neil is excited about the future of Pluck’s Engineering, whose innovation is helping the farming community, the environment and the broader community. The passion behind the environmentally friendly effluent system stems from Neil’s natural love of the environment. He was one of two people to develop the Rakaia recycling plant which has now been running for 12 years. He believes that you can’t keep taking from nature without giving back, which is a theory he runs his business on.

Pluck’s Engineering has, and will continue to support the local community. Neil understands that his business relies on being a part of a well established and successful community, so his business will continue to support the community passionately.

The family name in innovation excellence

Neil Pluck.

Sebco - Smart fuel storage

Seven years ago, Ed Harrison saw that farms and industry needed a new way to house and dispense diesel. With his experience in the farming industry, Ed had an insight into the problems farmers had storing diesel. Ed’s idea about developing a diesel tank that was completely bunded and self contained came about after the introduction of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996.

This act replaced the Dangerous Goods Act and it came fully into effect in 2006. The act covered all businesses that store, use or manufacture hazardous substances, such as diesel fuel. Ed realised that many farmers could not comply, as a lot of existing tanks on farms were old and had not been upgraded because there was not a better solution on the market.

Ed also knew that diesel engines and their fuel injection systems had undergone many technical

advances over recent years, mainly driven by regulations governing engine emissions. These systems run at high pressures and with fine tolerances, therefore they demand that clean fuel be run through them. Substandard facilities can become contaminated with condensation, rust or the diesel bug. This contaminated fuel can result in vehicle and machinery failures, costing thousands in downtime and repairs. Fuel contamination is the most common cause of fuel injection system failure. Ed and his wife Leah started Fuel Storage Systems Ltd, and together with local plastics manufacturer RX Plastics, they developed a new and innovative diesel storage facility for farming and industry, called the Sebco Diesel Station. Sebco Diesel Stations are bunded tanks that house diesel in an insulated clean environment that virtually eliminates

condensation and as they are not steel, no rotting or rusting occurs. Sebco Diesel Stations provide a sterile environment for fuel, are safe and secure to operate and help protect our clean green environments from spills.

The Sebco tanks are manufactured to an Environmental Protection Authority’s HSNO (Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act) Approved Code of Practice and are the only such units on the New Zealand market that comply under these tough requirements.

Sebco was launched on the New Zealand market in 2007 and has since become a market leader for fuel storage and dispensing in New Zealand. Since their launch Sebco tanks have won many awards for their innovation. Fuel Storage Systems Ltd won the Small Business and Supreme

Business awards in the 2009 Ashburton Business Awards.

Over the past five years the Sebco range of products has grown considerably to include various sizes of diesel stations, transportable tanks for the back of utes, tanks for storage and dispensing of diesel exhaust fluid (AdBlue) for new SCR engines, and waste oil recovery units. Sebco tanks can be found in use all over New Zealand, and for the past three years Sebco tanks have also been and continue to be exported to Australia.

For more information on Sebco products go to www.sebco.co.nz or phone (0800) 473226.

In the early 1970s, Smith Attachments was developed as a part-time venture by Ashburton based engineer, Ian Smith. Producing much needed accessories for farm bikes-like carriers, handlebar protectors, tow bars and trailers – he created a niche market that saw Smith Attachments grow into a thriving business.

Three wheeler bikes that were to become a “farmer’s best friend” emerged soon after, however they lacked stability, and any protection to the front of the bike.

Mismanaged three wheelers took a beating and Smith Attachments took charge to design prototype bull bars. In 1980, their workshop trebled in size, and constant improvements were made, including the purchase of a tube bender to increase speed and quality of production. Enter the four-wheeler market in the late 1980s and Smith Attachments ATV accessories were in demand.

Current Director, Ray McCormick joined forces with Ian Smith in 1980 and they ran a quality driven enterprise together, until Smith's retirement in 1999. For the past 13 years, Smith Attachments, under the directorship of Ray and Pam McCormick, has continued to provide a majority of ATV bullbars and mudflap kits into Australasia, as well as meeting the a demand for ATV trailers, stock crates, handlebar protectors and carriers throughout New Zealand.

Today, Smith Attachments continues to

move forward - producing quality, long-lasting ATV trailers, bullbars, mudflap kits, handlebar protectors and carriers to the farming sector.

Twenty years combined experience with Smith Attachments allows the two managers, Sharyn Amos and Luis Calles, to continually maintain their high standards. Their fully hot-dipped galvanised trailers carry the 'Buy NZ Made' logo and a five year 'Peace of Mind' manufacturer's warranty.

As the quote says; "The bitter taste of poor quality lingers far longer than the initial sweetness of a cheap price". Smith Attachments are too aware of this, as farmers have tried imported competitors products and are now returning in droves to buy their locally made trailers.

"A testimonial in a recent farming magazine read; 'Will your trailer last up to 20 years?' Well here is your answer; YES! Our trailer was purchased way back in the 70's and was made by your firm in Ashburton. It is still in its original condition and still working.

It has been used on our sheep and beef farm carrying anything from dogs, sheep and all the other stuff. It is slightly rusted as you may expect, but we still use it around the garden and on the farm. We thought you might be interested... Another satisfied owner in Dannevirke

The black and green façade and buildings may be new, but Neumanns Tyres is a company keen to honour its humble origins by providing the same old-fashioned service.

Len and Kath Neumann started the family business in 1945, working hard to make it a success. It was a work ethic passed on to their sons, Kevin, Alan and Ian, who played amongst the tyres and did small jobs for their parents as boys.

The passion for tyres was engrained in the brothers, and from a small two-man operation in 1945, Neumanns Tyres has grown into a company with a workforce of 26 and interest in nine other tyre-fitting outlets around the South Island. Being a family business since 1945, Neumanns Tyre Group has the experience which enables identification of the best tyre for the job.

The Neumanns Group purchased a Tyre General retail outlet and a tyre retreading plant in Christchurch, as well as a Tyre General outlet in Temuka. It then went on to have interests in Invercargill, Cromwell, Alexandra, Motueka, Blenheim and Nelson through Tyre Retreaders.

“We had to grow out of Ashburton to get the better prices to stay viable, providing the best prices to our local community,” Alan said.

The Neumann brothers have a combined experience of more than 75 years in the tyre industry, a trade they feel they were born to do. The business has one of the largest turnovers of any privately owned tyre company in New Zealand, and has won multiple awards for exceptional service to the rural community.

It is this loyal, long-lasting service relationship with its clients that has kept Neumanns at the forefront of continued success; whether a large business or an individual, Neumanns strives to provide an exceptional service experience to everyone. Becoming an Ashburton Trading Society supplier also introduced new relationships into the business, cementing its position as a premium tyre fitter and supplier.

“Our team is what makes our business special. We are lucky to have dedicated people working within the business, giving their dedication and best work to the job every day. Their passion shows in great customer service and high standards, which our clients appreciate. Because we receive such excellent dedication from our staff, we try to reward them well and treat them like family,” Alan said.

Its unwavering motto is to fit the right tyre, on the right rim, at the right pressure, at the right price, doing the right job. This includes ensuring that big agricultural machinery equipment imported from Europe is fitted with high grade tyres to allow them to perform in New Zealand’s rugged conditions. It carries multi-brand products promoting choice to suit your needs.

Should an emergency occur, Neumanns Tyres is available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for your tyre emergency. With eight fleet trucks on call, they are there to help with your family car, commercial truck or farm vehicle.

Neumanns Tyres ensure that you have the safest ride possible by providing drivers with the very best products and services.

An Ashburton Guardian Advertising FeatureIndustrial PowerhouseSay hello to your dream lifestyle

The motor home is a travel and lifestyle phenomenon of massive proportions and particularly over the last decade, the motor home lifestyle is one being discovered daily by those looking for escape and seeking to adopt the motor home catchphrase; live your dream. Motor homes are the pinnacle of luxury travel, and Lifestyle Motorhomes has a travelling lifestyle option for everyone.

Living life on the road doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the luxuries of owning your own home. Now motor homes can have hot showers, porcelain flush toilets, well equipped kitchens, comfy queen size beds, luxury leather lounge suites and much more.

Being a local company, Lifestyle Motorhomes understands what is required to meet New Zealand’s harsh climate and roads and builds motor homes very suited to our unique driving conditions.

The road to successFor 30 years Marg and Murray McPherson

were in the business of designing and installing electrical and lighting systems for commercial buildings, family homes and luxury motor homes. They then became aware of the need for a company that was able to build motor homes from the beginning to end. A dream turned into reality, and Lifestyle Motorhomes was born.

Within the first year of starting Lifestyle Motorhomes, Murray realised, to really give his clients what they wanted and to have, and run a successful company in the growing motor home industry, Lifestyle would be required to have on their own staff, all the different tradesmen to manufacture, repair and refurbish all makes and models of motor homes.

Today Lifestyle has a design team and a dedicated team of tradesman covering electrical, engineering, coach building, joinery, cabinet making, upholstery, plumbing, gas fitting, fibreglass and painting repairs and certified applicators of Titan roofing membrane. All work is certified and guaranteed, and by providing all of the essential services under one roof, the transition between the different trades and materials is seamless. The overall finish is second to none, and personalisation such as interior design & décor is an option.

Building a motor home is a hands-on passionate affair, ensuring every motor home takes on an individuality of its own reflecting the unique personality of its owners. Add to this the flexibility and dedication of Lifestyle’s committed team of experienced craftsmen, the result is the finest of motor homes available in New Zealand.

Lifestyle has now developed into a well known brand in New Zealand. It’s known for its people skills, combined with exceptional knowledge,

service and commitment to its clients and the industry as a whole.

Lifestyle Motorhomes create extraordinary motor homes because it believes you deserve absolute reliability, enjoyment and total satisfaction wherever you go. It knows that when you buy a motor home, caravan or campervan, you are investing in a home. It is a significant investment and must represent outstanding value for money. Lifestyle’s attention to detail, whether working on a custom new build, a bus conversion or a campervan repair, is meticulous.

Living the dreamMyra and Bazel Severinsen are now retired,

after a busy life of teaching and farming. Upon their retirement, they discussed different ways of investing for their future. After contemplating different options, they decided to by-pass common “Blue Chip” investment opportunities, and committed to an investment that would give their life great joy and fulfillment. They had always dreamed that owning a mobile home would be fun and exciting, and invested in a newly built motor home from Lifestyle Motorhomes.

“We looked around several dealerships and coachbuilders before deciding on Lifestyle to work with. They were and still are excellent to work with. They advised and helped us through every aspect of the build and listened to our requirements. They were extremely friendly and professional and we regard them and their staff as friends. We also knew before finally signing up exactly what the motor home would cost and throughout the build we were welcome to visit and see every stage. Their five year follow-up action was also a deciding factor”, Myra said.

One of their favourite holiday spots in the mobile home is Lake Ohau. “There’s nothing more relaxing than the mountain scenery, placid lake and the calm, sweet air helping to wash away worries and care”, Myra said.

Myra and Bazel are now truly living the dream, thanks to the superb craftsmanship and advice from Lifestyle Motorhomes.

Innovation and developmentTwo years ago Lifestyle Motorhomes started

research on how to help their clients stop and prevent gradual damage in their vehicles, due to dreaded water leaks.

Last year Lifestyle Motorhomes researched a product range called Titan, a Roof Protection Membrane, which is manufactured by a company specialising in the manufacture of roofing and waterproofing membranes. Because of New Zealand’s high ultra violet levels and varied weather conditions, Lifestyle Motorhomes carried

out a great deal of testing using the Titan ZX50 products. They are now the only company in New Zealand who has the rights to the Titan membrane which is applied to the roofs of new and existing motor homes. Lifestyle has also found it has many other applications to protect items of value from water damage and New Zealand’s strong UV conditions.

In the near future Lifestyle Motorhomes will be looking to expand this area of their business in New Zealand by finding other interested companies in the Titan product, then training and developing them as certified applicators.

Innovative DesignAfter 3 years of planning, design and

development, Lifestyle Motorhomes is well on its way to completing two new motor homes in its Lifestyle Dream Series.

The first motor home in the dream series is already off the drawing board and has been built to its shell stage. This means currently it is a blank canvas, ready for someone to work with our design team to personalise it with their own interior & exterior design and decor.

This has been developed with the higher spending market in mind. With the choice of full length or multiple slide outs, it gives the opportunity for pure luxury, all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer, indoor and outdoor entertaining, guest bedroom, LED lighting plus the opportunity to include many other luxuries for the ultimate home on wheels.

The second of the Lifestyle Dream Series will be hot off the press, with the help of another innovative company Aeromarine Industries in Timaru, this will be completed in time to be showcased at the Covi Motorhome Caravan & Outdoor Super Show held in Auckland on September 14 to 16, and then at the Christchurch Motorhome and Caravan Show 9th to 11th October. This Motor home will come complete with slide out, two leather settees which convert to very comfortable double beds, full size shower, porcelain toilet and vanity, full-size well appointed kitchen, queen size bed in the master bedroom all with ample storage throughout. Lifestyle Motorhomes goal is to sell a luxury home for arround $300,000 which is fantastic value and a lot of motor home, even for today’s high standards.

It’s time to travel, it’s time to start living.

Custom-made cover crafted to last

Strength you can rely on

It takes a sensational eye for detail, dedication and passion to have clients follow you to Ashburton from Christchurch, and that is exactly what Advanced Upholstery have managed to achieve over their successful years in the upholstery industry. Owners Brian and Sue Stockdale take pride in Advanced Upholstery’s fine attention to detail, and ability to custom-design almost anything that is presented to them.

“We do everything from car interiors, to replacing caravan swabs, installing roman blinds in a motor home and even re-surfacing pool tables.

“Because Mid Canterbury is rurally focused, we have increased the services we offer to include hay covers and restoring the interior of tractors and farm vehicles,” Brian said.

Advanced Upholstery will design and custom build to its clients’ specifications and aim to deliver on time, every time. It guarantees quality to last, and the finish is completed to the highest standard.

Previously located on Cashel Street in Christchurch, the February 22 earthquake rendered its building unsafe. With the clients’ best interests at heart, Brian and Sue made the decision to relocate to Ashburton, to ensure the safety of the vehicles, boats and motor homes that they typically upholster. They are now at home in Ashburton’s Riverside Industrial Estate, with easy access off Range Street. Just keep an eye out for the yellow Anglia.

More than one year after the business was moved to Ashburton, Sue and Brian can reflect on a hectic yet successful year.

“Business has been constantly busy, so we have recently hired a new employee, John Webster, who has excellent canvas and upholstering experience. It is great to have another skilled person on-board for a faster turn-around for our clients. “We have decided to join the Ashburton Business Association, which will give us the opportunity to meet others in business, which will provide a great networking opportunity for us,” Sue said.

Open the door and climb into a world of custom-designed comfort. Buckle up and let Advanced Upholstery take you on a journey to automotive interior perfection. With more than 25 years in the upholstery industry, Brian will ensure high quality custom-designed comfort and workmanship to enhance the beauty of your prized possession.

Helmack ITM is the only company in Ashburton that uses New Zealand Oregon, which is kiln dried, gauged and machine-stressed graded timber for their farm buildings.

Helmack ITM believes it is a better quality timber than others on the market used for farm buildings, to give their customers the best. Hamish Baxter, dairy farmer in Mid Canterbury, couldn’t agree more.

“Helmack ITM uses a better quality timber than others I have come across. Nobody else seems to have that quality of timber here in Ashburton, and the Helmack ITM sheds are a good price.”

When asked about the advantages of kiln-dried planer gauged timber, Allan Breakwell, Helmack ITM rural consultant, has a convincing answer.

“The timber is completely dry so it doesn’t move. It’s lighter than any other timber and the fact that it is Oregon makes it stronger too. This is a major point of difference with wet, rough sawn timber.

“This type of timber is also easier to work with as its width and depth are constant. There is no variation,” he said.

Helmack ITM can offer a standard shed design, or can custom-make one designed to individual requirements, using the high quality Oregon timber. Allan has the ability to contract a builder for construction if one is required, and aims to make the process easy by providing a quote within 48 hours of the initial enquiry.

“They ask for a price, they get it,” Allan confirmed.

Allan believes that they provide the best service from receiving the original enquiry, to giving a quote, right through to building. Craig Coulter, owner of Coulter Seeds, verifies this from his own experience with Helmack ITM.

Craig required an eight-bay open-front shed to store one thousand seed boxes. He decided to buy his shed through Helmack ITM as they

were the only company in Ashburton that said they could build it on time. There was a completion date set to meet the 2012 harvest and Helmack ITM achieved it.

“Not only did Helmack ITM have to build the shed before a certain date, its price was very good too,” Craig said.

The shed was built to exacting standards and Craig was kept

up-to-date throughout all stages of the build.

“Allan Breakwell went the extra mile for us, as he had to work through various consents with the Council, and he did,” Craig recalls.

“Lindsay Jones, who was the builder organized by Allan, was a brilliant builder who completed the structure to a very high standard. Allan was great do deal with, professional and efficient. Helmack ITM did a tremendous job.

“If I need another pole shed built, I will ask Helmack ITM again,” Craig said.

If I need another

pole shed built, I will ask Helmack ITM again,” Craig Coulter said.

The continued success of this venture over the coming years will be due to the support of our loyal and committed growers

Seed Production Specialists

When Ross Smith, then working for Elders, went to Bangkok in the late eighties to sell marrowfat peas, he saw some interesting vegetables growing and organised to send some of the seed back home to grow in his garden. Unfortunately they didn’t develop into the luscious vegetables he had seen in Asia; however they did seed quickly. That was the start of an idea that grew, as he anticipated a niche market for such seeds to be grown locally and exported.

Elders stopped trade in the late eighties and their subsidiary Holder and Tolley, for whom Ross was then national manager, consolidated their operations immediately. It was the perfect time for the enthusiastic Ross Smith to make his mark, and so in 1990 Smith Seeds was opened in Ashburton. It was the first company in Mid Canterbury to specialize in Asian vegetable seed production.

The early days were hard work, as Ross and his older son Grant, ran the complete seed management operation. Although initially, Ross had some contacts in Thailand, in order to expand he had to travel back again, and similar Asian countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, to make introductions and establish mutual relationships; very essential when dealing in that part of the world.

Now, Smith Seeds deals with suppliers in those countries and have expanded operations into 22 countries worldwide.

Essentially the overseas merchant will supply stock seeds which are then grown here to produce more of that variety, and then the resulting large crop is shipped back to the customer. This may seem unproductive, until some facts are known: New Zealand’s temperate climate is ideal for the propagation of seeds. However we can’t grow the Asian vegetables well, because of the difference in growing temperatures, humidity and much stronger light intensity. All these factors encourage the plants to go to seed rather than grow.

Smith Seeds has developed from a two-man operation to a successful company now employing nine staff. They grow seeds throughout New Zealand and have up to 150 growers on their books at any one time, with each farmer sowing areas from four to twenty hectares of seeds.

Out of the ordinary crops such as bokchoy, borage, kale, Chinese celery, red beet and mustard are their domain. This industry brings foreign currency into the Ashburton district, as more than 95% of Smith’s Seeds business is export.

Their consistent production results ensure continuity of seed supply to Asian vegetable producers. It is not only important to our local economy, but it is also important in the food supply

to Asian countries. The relationship Smith Seeds has with their farmers is key; it is of supreme importance to both the success of the farmer’s crops, and their business. Today Smith Seeds has a heard earned, enviable reputation, both at home and overseas. The varieties it produces are often the best yielding and most

reliable of those produced in Mid Canterbury, which ensure their long-term overseas clients keep receiving high yielding varities year after year.

Smith Seeds continue to be at the forefront of seed management and production in New Zealand, with constant reviews of its service and operations to ensure it stays ahead.

Its extensive expertise combined with an exclusive total seed management programme ensures its clients locally and throughout the world receive the highest quality seeds possible.

The total seed management programme encompasses every aspect of seed production; planting, crop management, harvesting, cleaning, purity and quality analysis, packing and shipment.

Leaving nothing to chance, Smith Seeds monitor crop growth at every stage. A carefully selected grower receives an individual total seed management programme targeting their particular crop to ensure yields and quantity reach maximum potential.

The grower is advised the best time to plant, optimum sowing rate, correct fertilisers to use and expert advice on weed control. Customers are kept informed on the progress of their crops with digital

photos of each field.

With Smith Seeds you can literally watch both your seed crops and your profits grow.

Thank you to all our valued growers and customers for your support during this last season and we look forward to your continued support in the future. New growers will be welcomed.

With a thirst for innovation, pride in traditional business values and a commitment to 'build it the right way', Calder Stewart has been a recognised leader in the New Zealand construction industry for more than a generation.

Since 1955, Calder Stewart Construction has built a solid name for itself in the specialist commercial, industrial, agricultural and public-sector construction markets. Throughout the growth of the company, we have continued to focus on developing the core values we uphold about construction itself; namely to ‘build it the right way’. Our clients can have complete confidence in the quality of our building materials, our practical yet innovative approach to design, our competitive pricing and our time-proven techniques in building with steel and concrete. For more than 50 years, we've been guided by a vision to be a quality builder.

It’s what we know and it’s what we do best.

And that’s why clients have chosen us, again and again.

Situated close to Christchurch's central business district, the $80 million - eight building Hazeldean project represents an upscale approach to commercial office space development, offering amenities in keeping with a grade A business park. These include a five-storey carpark, room for several food outlets, both a bar and a gymnasium, all situated around an iconic central plaza designed by one of New Zealand's leading environmental planning and design consultancies. The fact that the complex has achieved Greenstar energy rating reflects our shared commitment to environmentally responsible design.

Demonstrating our enterprise capabilities

The Hazeldean Business Park represents a flagship project for Calder Stewart Development of which we are most proud, bringing together the full resources of Calder Stewart’s divisions and their capabilities. Our precast concrete, steel, ReoXpress and construction divisions all played an important role in bringing phase one of this three-phase development to completion. Hazeldean also demonstrates our project management capabilities, where scheduling and co-ordinating with a number of key suppliers and subcontractors were unhampered by challenging weather conditions. Within the scope of this project, Calder Stewart Precast was called upon to provide high volume output, supplying precast for all four buildings of phase one. This included special panels for the five-store,y 500 plus vehicle carpark that exhibit our artful and sophisticated finishing capabilities. Seen as a whole, this development demonstrates our ability to scale

operations to an enterprise level, while still maintaining the high quality standards that we are known for.

A local $1.5 million developmentWhen a construction firm was to be chosen to complete the

re-build of the Ashburton Baptist Church, it was fitting that a company that is no stranger to constructing quality community icons was chosen.

A national market leader in design and build construction projects, Calder Stewart has constructed many church buildings and halls nationally over many faiths, including Seventh Day Adventist, Presbyterian and Salvation Army. This will be the third Baptist Church that Calder Stewart has completed, combining knowledge and superior construction materials to create a beautiful place of worship that the community can be proud of.

With a thirst for building innovation, Calder Stewart prides itself in being a design build specialist. Rather than working with separate entities, the church was able to deal with one organisation from start to finish.

Calder Stewart’s Ashburton manager Donald Sutton said it was important that he understood the needs of the church, to be able to deliver the desirable end result. “Our design and build process begins with carefully listening to the client’s specific needs, and ends with a building that perfectly meets them.”

Donald believes that the building possibilities with Calder Stewart are endless. “We can build anything the client requires, and because we plan everything from the original concept drawing to the evolved end product, we can easily accommodate any required changes along the way. It’s all about constant communication, and this is the way we approached the Baptist Church build. They oversaw every part of the build process, allowing them to make changes as we went to ensure the final product was exactly they were looking for,” Donald said.

This culmination of innovation and experience has produced a place of worship that the community will treasure for many years.

The ILT Velodrome, built to international standards

The ILT Velodrome represents a benchmark project for Calder Stewart Construction, demonstrating our capacity to take on the big jobs. By integrating our precast concrete, structural steel and roofing divisions to greater advantage, we delivered a completed

project that was not only on time and within budget but, most importantly, constructed according to internationally-set standards for cycling velodromes.

The Invercargill-based velodrome has become a national landmark and enjoys a growing international reputation. It also earned us the Registered Master Builders Tourism and Leisure Commercial Project Award for 2007.

"The accuracy and precision with which the structure was built is testament to the team's skill," the Registered Master Builders Competition committee judges said.

The Velodrome's unique roof design comprised of 13 rafter trusses and were all manufactured in-house by Calder Stewart's Steel Division.

The complex was fitted with Calder Stewart's Mega 5 roofing product line to form a canopy that covers four indoor multi-purpose courts.

The 250m indoor wooden track utilised specialty timber imported from the Siberian region.

Officially opened on May 26, 2006, by Prime Minister Helen Clark, this 57-week $8 million construction project came in on budget.

Local rural construction specialists Calder Stewart's wide array of farm buildings, ranging from

modern fully automated dairy sheds to high performance woolsheds, covered yards, wintering sheds and implement sheds have been chosen again and again by farmers who recognise them as the best ‘value-for-money’ investments they can make. Equally so, insurance providers have recognised them as the best overall performer under some of the most stressful New Zealand weather conditions to date.

You can tell a Calder Stewart farm building by its material strength and integrity, its use of industrial grade steel framing techniques and use of only higher grade building materials. These particular attributes, built into all of the farm buildings we produce, has earned us a strong reputation in the rural construction market. Today a wide range of Calder Stewart woolsheds, covered yards, wintering sheds, implement sheds and dairy sheds grace the rural landscape, having been chosen again and again as a preferred choice among farmers looking for value in the purchases they make.

Calder Stewart’s built a reputation of being solid and reliable

Got a special project? Chances are we can build it! With more than 50 years experience and a reputation to go with it, Calder Stewart continues to be known as a specialty builder with a track record that shows considerable strength and versatility. Having grown as a company, taking on projects for a wide range of clients, we can safely say that if you have a project, we can build it.

That’s because we are experienced and familiar with meeting new challenges and benchmarks. Our building practices, which emerged from serving the rural marketplace, have today given us the expertise to build in steel and concrete across multiple markets and for multiple building scales and settings.

Our experience sets us apart and our resources make us distinct.

Drilling excellence in Mid Canterbury

For some crop farmers and contractors, the land conditions here on our back door in Mid Canterbury can be seen as a challenge.

We at Allen Custom Drills are here to meet the land conditions. Manufacturing air seeder direct drills for those all over the country, that are in need for a direct drill in the right price range, of any size and specifications, a drill that can not only sustain the conditions long-term but provide the most accurate results.

The company started with Craig’s father, Dave Allen’s initiative with modifications made on his imported direct drill when he was farming and contracting himself.

He saw a niche in the market for a low-cost, durable, simple and accurate air seeder direct drill. The company originated in 2002 and has been successful in Mid Canterbury ever since. It is now wellknown throughout New Zealand.

Craig Allen is CEO of Allen Custom Drills and is behind the innovation, design and working side-by-side with clients as the manufacturing process takes place, ensuring this drill will exceed client expectations, no matter what size or model or the condition of the soil.

“We take into serious consideration any factors that will provide a cost effective, low maintenance and long lasting product,” Craig Allen says.

We design our drills using four principles; accuracy, simplicity, durability and reliability.

“We can build everything in the drill to the

customer’s specifications, from its working width, to whether or not it has a fertiliser box, insecticide box, crane and more.

“We have many features available that other drills don’t have. Our drills are designed to be adjusted to planting different types of seed.

“It also has to be tough. Drills made in Europe are not designed to handle the stony soils that we have.

“I’m very proud to be producing a New Zealand made product and right here in Ashburton. The best part for me is seeing

the drills out there working, handling some rough conditions and seeing the client’s seed take off.

“At the end of the day I’m trying to design drills that are going to be the best piece of machinery for the farmer or contractor in all aspects and seeing the results come through feels pretty darn good.”

Allen Custom Drills are built to an extremely high standard;

every engineer working on the machine, every part incorporated into the machine is closely monitored and carefully checked through. The staff here are experts at what they do, they respect the high standards and they feel proud of the end results.

Mid Canterbury is a powerhouse and we’re proud to be manufacturers here in Ashburton, strongly supplying a product nationally and recently having the opportunity to supply internationally. We’re looking forward to seeing what the future brings.

David Clark is an arable farmer, growing cereals, peas, ryegrass, clover and vegetable seeds as well as farming breeding ewes and fattening trading lambs.

He purchased a P-D series six metre drill from Allen Custom Drills which was delivered in February.

When considering where to purchase a new drill, ultimately he chose Allen Custom Drills.

“We looked closely at all of the European air drills and chose the Allen drill primarily because of its very robust construction. The pricing of this drill was also more than competitive with imported alternatives,” David said.

The strength, quality and performance of the drill have exceeded David’s expectations.

“The strength of the frame is outstanding. The rubber block oscillation on the coulters means that there is no mechanical connection between the ground and the frame and we think that will greatly reduce the maintenance costs of the drill.

“Being equipped with an RDS electronic controller and Accord electric feed rollers has meant that I can calibrate the drill in the shed and once the controller has determined the density of the seed, the application rate can be altered from the cab. We are operating this drill on a tractor with RTK Auto Steer so we know exactly how big the field is and this has eliminated any overlap so when used in conjunction with the RDS controller which is so accurate, we can precisely apply the amount of seed that is required for that field. As a example, in sowing new ryegrass seed crops this autumn in 25ha paddocks that were allocated 250kg of seed, we were consistently finishing these fields with 4 or 5 kg of seed left.

“The manufacturing quality is very good, all plates are CNC profile cut, the frame and fittings are square and well laid out and the paint quality is excellent. This is a very professional product that in my view is the equal of any imported machine,” David said.

Overall David found his experience with Allen Custom Drills to be excellent, exceeding his customer service and performance expectations.

“Craig and his team have been fantastic to deal with, and were very collaborative during the design phase and several of our suggestions were incorporated into the final product. The drill was on time, on budget and has exceeded our expectations. We are extremely pleased with the machine and the service provided by Craig Allen.”

We take into serious

consideration any factors that will provide a cost effective, low maintenance and long lasting product.

David Clark.
