Below anyone‘s feet: polymers“Industrial floors” refers to floors with a wide variety of industrial uses, for example storage area, parking space, floors in workshops, laboratories and other industrial premises. In a simple sense, industrial floors include all floors which are not used for living purposes or as outdoor roads.

BesidesBesides excellent mechanical strength, abrasion resistance and easy to maintain, there are other specific properties expected from industrial floors depending on the type of service. Chemical production halls or warehouses and laboratories will require high chemical resistance, for example.

TheThere are various type of industrial floors based on different technologies & polymers, such as polymer concrete or epoxy flooring.

Synthomer offers a broad range of specially developed XSBR-lattices (LIPATON SB) or acrylic dispersions (REVACRYL and PLEXTOL) for polymer dispersion based industrial flooring.

Applications Applications Typical applications for polymer dispersion based industrial floor are:

• parking deck• garage • factory floor (metal/wood/plastic manufacturing & food industry)•• warehouse• stairs• workshop

Advantages of polymer dispersion based industrial floorUsing Synthomer dispersions provides benefits such as:

• excellent workability• excellent compressive & flexural strength balance• joint-less finish at 13 – 20mm thickness• excellent water resistance•• durable with excellent abrasion resistance• resistant against gasoline, diesel oil, mineral oil, freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts• shock resistant• dust-free

CompositionTheThe industrial flooring contains two binding agents: cement and an aqueous polymer dispersion based on styrene-butadiene or acrylates. The aggregates are sand and grit which should be appropriately graded, hard and well washed. Excellent properties both in application and use are achieved through the use of Synthomer latices (Lipaton SB range or Plextol range) in industrial floorings.

Placing process of industrial floorsSubstrateInIn order to achieve a good adhesion a clean and sound substrate is of great importance. The substrate has to be prepared appropriately before the industrial flooring is placed. The substrate has to be wetted approx. 24 h before and should be damp when the industrial flooring is placed.

Primer slurry, bonding aidTheThe very best adhesion between substrate and industrial flooring will be achieved by using a primer. A primer slurry consisting of 1 part by volume cement, 1 part by volume of screed sand, and 0.5 parts by volume of latex (and additional water as required) has to be worked into the substrate with a broom. The thickness of the primer slurry should be approx. 2-3 mm.

Placing Placing of the industrial flooringThe mix is applied on the fresh primer slurry (wet on wet), distributed by a rake and drawn off across guide rails. Immediately after levelling, the flooring is compacted and smoothed with a disc smoother. After some setting of the flooring further treatment of the surface is carried out with a "helicopter" type smoothing machine.

Typical properties of the industrial flooring

Emulsion properties*

Two bags of cement (2 x 25 kg) are mixed with approx. 160 to 200 litres of aggregates and approx. 12 litres of Synthomer latices (e.g. Lipaton SB 29Y141).

TheThe quantity of mixing water required depends on the moisture content of the aggregates and of the workability of the mix. The mix is produced in a forced action mixer. Normally the latex and the mixing water is added at the end of the mixing process. When smoothing by machine the mix should be earth damp.

The consumption of Synthomer latices (e.g. Lipaton SB 29Y141) for industrial flooring of 15 mm thickness is approx. 1.5 litres/m².
