Alkyds, Offset Vehicles/ Varnishes, Offset Resins, Resin Solutions, Liquid Ink Resins, Wax Products and Additives for Printing Inks (NA)
Hexion™ Specialty Chemicals, Inc. is the leading global supplier of quality raw materials for the offset industry. We provide offset ink manufacturers with specialty and standard resins, alkyds, varnishes, wax compounds and additives for sheet fed and web offset printing.
In the past Hexion has acquired resin and varnish businesses. Recently Hexion successfully acquired the resins business of Akzo Nobel and the wax compound business of Rohm+Haas. Hexion Specialty Chemicals Ink and Adhesive Resins therefore combines the resin, alkyd, varnish and wax compound technologies from various companies.
Our main product groups for offset are:
Phenolic modified rosin resins, phenol-free rosin resins, modified hydrocarbon resins, hybrid resins, alkyd resins, resin solutions, varnishes, specialties, micronized waxes, wax compounds and ink and press additives for the offset printing ink industry.
Research and development:
We work in close cooperation with our customers to improve results and help create value. History proves that this collaboration achieves the required results. We have a proud history of having created innovative and successful solutions to meet the exact requirements in all industries served. Our total organization is committed to supporting our customers’ drive for success. Combining our knowledge of resin, alkyd, varnish and compound chemistry and our customers’ expertise in their field of excellence has been the impulse for the creation of new resins, alkyds, varnishes and compounds. Customized products are being developed by working under mutually confidential conditions.
Renewable raw material sources:
A major part of our raw materials are derived from renewable sources like rosin tapped from pine trees and derived via the pulp making process for the paper industry. Hexion Ink and Adhesive Resins is partially backward integrated into different rosin sources. Natural raw materials such as soybean oil and linseed oil are also widely used.

Brief Description of Test Methods
Viscosity
The viscosity of hard resins is measured with a rotation viscometer using plate and cone at 25°C. A solution of hard resin is first made in mineral distillate or linseed oil (as indicated) by using the thermotronic (Novocontrol GmbH).
The viscosity of alkyds is measured with a rotation viscometer using plate and cone at 25°C.
Cloudpoint
The cloudpoint is measured in order to obtain an indication of the solubility of hard resins in varnishes based on mineral distillate. The resin solution is prepared using the chemotronic (Novocontrol GmbH); the solution is heated and stirred with a specific type of mineral distillate until the pre-set maximum temperature is reached. The solution is allowed to cool and the temperature at which clouding occurs is recorded.
Acid value
The acid value is the number of milliliters of potassium hydroxide required to neutralize 1 gram of alkyd resin. A solution of the alkyd is prepared in a mixture of xylene/ethanol (2:1). The value is determined with 0.1 N KOH solution using phenolphthalein as indicator.
Methanol value
Methanol compatibility is used to indicate the polarity of our alkyd resins. The alkyd resins are first dissolved in toluene and then titrated with anhydrous methanol until the solution becomes just cloudy. The temperature during the titration should be maintained at 20°C.
Tack
The tack of varnishes is measured with an Inkometer at 90°F. The tack is read after 1 minute at 400 rpms.

Brief Description of Test Methods
Acid value pH-value
The acid value is the number of pH is measured with a glass/calomel milligrams of potassium hydroxyde electrode filled with 3 M KCL. required to neutralize 1 gram of acrylic

dispersion calculated on solids. An acrylic dispersion solution is prepared in a mixture of xylene/ethanol (2:1). The value is determined with 0.2 N KOH solution using phenolphthalein as indicator. For the determination of the acid value of acrylic resins, rosin resins and resins for publication gravure (different solvent mix, 0.1 N KOH) a similar method is used.
Softening point (Melt point)
Softening point is measured by filling a cup with molten resin. The excess material is removed using a slightly heated knife. The cup is placed in the Mettler apparatus and the heating program is started. The softening point is registered automatically.
Solids
The solid content of the acrylic dispersion is measured by drying during 1 hour at 125°C.
Viscosity
The viscosity of acrylic dispersions is measured with Physica MC 10/MC 100 rotation viscometer using a cylindrical measuring system at 23°C. The viscosity of the dispersions as ammonia salts can be measured by diluting the acrylic dispersion with water and neutralizing with ammonia.
Tg
The glass transition temperature (Tg) is measured by means of differential scanning calorimetry.
Flowtime
The flowtime is the speed with which liquid flows from a cup with an orifice and is indicative of the viscosity. The flow is the time (seconds), starting from the moment when a liquid flows out of the orifice of a cup to the point that the flow is interrupted, at a given temperature and concentration.
Dilutability
The dilutability is the solvent (toluene) uptake (in %) of a varnish of certain concentration, diluted to a flow time in a special cup, at a given temperature. The cups used are the Gebrüder Schmidt cup/3 mm or the DIN 3 mm cup.
Molecular weight
Molecular weight is measured by means of gel permeation chromatography (GPC), relative to polystyrene standards.
