INDUCTIVE INTERVIEWING FOR JUSTICE PROFESSIONALSThe Art and Science of Forensic Interviewing

inductive interview system Easy to apply for producing credible and reliable results

Built on the foundation of time-tested interviewing principles, the Inductive Interview System brings a fresh approach to interviewing that is innovative, unique, and highly effective. Non-coercive and non-linear, the system can be easily applied by any officer who has to gather information and determine the credibility of sources.

Overly coercive interviewing techniques and clever psychological tactics are proven to produce false confessions, alienate juries, and cause the dreaded “shut down.”

The Inductive Interview (IN2) System is designed to produce credible results and reliable confessions by creating an environment conducive to full disclosure of the truth, overcoming reluctance to disclosure of evidence, and exposing attempts at deception or suppression.

SUPERIOR TO TRADITIONAL INTERVIEWSThe distinctive “non-linear” approach is superior in many respects including an enhanced flexibility that follows the natural flow of actual interviews instead of imposing a restrictive and unrealistic “flow chart” pattern.

OVER 10 HOURS OF CONTENTOur online course consists of 5 sessions and each lesson has over 2 hours of lecture and case study discussions.

RAY NASHCo-founder of the Inductive

Interview System

Ray Nash began his 40-year law enforcement career as a police dispatcher while he was still in high school. After a time as a patrolman and street supervisor, he was appointed Police Chief in Irmo, South Carolina at the tender age of 23. Later, he served as a Training Specialist with the Institute of Police Technology and Management (I.P.T.M.) at the University of North Florida, then returned to S.C. for his second tenure as a Police Chief, this time in Summerville.

In 1997, Ray began the first of his three terms as the elected Sheriff in Dorchester County, SC. After retiring in 2009, he pursued an overseas mission for over three years in support of the international police reform effort in Afghanistan. He served as a Professional Police Mentor to the Ministry of Interior, the Criminal Justice Advisor for the US Embassy in Kabul, and the Professional Development Director for the International Police Coordination Board.

As CEO and founder of the Police Dynamics Institute, Sheriff Nash has provided consulting services and leadership training to over 15,000 police officers, government officials, and business leaders from around the world. Agencies that have adopted the character-based principles of Police Dynamics have reported lower crime rates, higher morale, enhanced officer performance, and reductions in ethical failures and complaints. In 2018, Sheriff Nash, co-founded the Inductive Interview System, a non-linear, non-coercive approach to forensic interviewing for the law enforcement/public safety and mental health professions.

Every contact is a quest for credible and actionable information. So, every contact becomes an interview. Unlike many traditional approaches, the non-linear nature of the IN2 System allows the interviewer great flexibility to range freely between phases, or skip phases altogether, as dictated by the flow of the interview itself.

After the Introduction, this fast-paced session will cover the first three phases of the system: Preparation, Rapport, and Narrative.

course details The Inductive Interview System is a six-phase, integrated structure

for conducting forensic interviews. Learn how the IN2 System allows the interviewer greater flexibility for better results.

Sometimes called the Cognitive Interview, the Clarification phase of the IN2 System occurs when the interviewer shifts from a free narrative to ask specific questions designed to probe for inconsistencies, fill in gaps in the Narrative, or drill down on discrepancies. During this phase, the interviewer must be particularly attentive to signs of deception including the Ten Types of Lies.

03 Clarification

In this lesson, we will discuss the 10 Types of Lies in depth. We’ll expand on behavioral leakage, response onset window, and non-verbal disharmonies. And finally, we’ll continue applying this knowledge to additional case studies.

Wrap Up

During the Induction Phase, the interviewer must be sensitive to overcoming denials, the influence of secondary issues, signs of surrender, and guarding against false confessions. The final phase of the IN2 System is Closure. Not every interview will end with a confession. But every one should end with a professional closing.
