Re: Request to become an indoor student Dear Master Liming Yue,

I have been training in the martial arts for just over twenty years and I have been very fortunate to have trained and been certified by some of the best martial artists in the world. I currently hold the rank of 6th Dan Master Black Belt in Ryukyu Kempo and Kyusho-Jitsu (Dim Mak). I also hold qualifications in a number of other martial arts and personal protection systems. I have been teaching the martial arts for just over fifteen years and for the past three years it has been my full time job. I have also just opened my own full time martial arts centre where I live.

My journey in Tai Chi first started in Yang Style Tai Chi about twelve years ago. I would travel around 40 miles to a neighbouring town to train once a week. I also attended a number of seminars with Master John Ding at the time as my instructor was part of his group. I trained there for two years until the instructor decided to close the club as he was not getting enough students to make it work. With there being no other Tai Chi instructors around I just practiced what I had learned myself. Over time I stopped practicing the short form I had learned (as I was afraid without instruction I would just be practicing it wrong). But I kept training the Tai Chi stance and, due to my involvement with a Karate organisation that was open to a lot of different arts, I was introduced to Qigong, in particular the Ba Duan Jin. I have been doing the Ba Duan Jin for about eight years.

I always enjoyed my Tai Chi and Qigong training and I wanted to be able to pass on the benefits I had found for myself to other people. That's when I came across your website and I saw that with your help I could qualify to teach Tai Chi. I signed up for your course and I have never looked back since.

I remember shortly after signing up for your instructor's course, you phoned me to let me know that you would be teaching a seminar in Ireland and that it would be great to see me there if I could make it. I really appreciated that call and I headed to Loughrea for the first time to meet and train with you. I really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and your willingness to answer any questions I might have had. I knew from that moment that you were the instructor I wanted to learn Tai Chi from.

Since I first started training with you I have attended as many courses as possible and I have absorbed and practiced all the information you have given to me. I have been teaching three to four Tai Chi classes a week for the past year and I have enjoyed every minute of it.

I am the type of person who likes to keep challenging myself and pushing myself forward. For me, training in the martial arts in my way of life and teaching the martial arts is my chosen career and Tai Chi is a big part of that. I want to learn and teach Tai Chi to the best of my ability, and the only way for me to become the best I can be is to learn Tai Chi directly from you.

Master Yue, I hope you will consider me as one of your indoor students in 2014.

Kind regards

Damian Kierans 6th Dan

Neil Grimley

To Master Liming Yue,

I forward my application request for consideration of becoming one of your indoor students, you are widely known as one of the most experienced knowledgeable Chen Tai Chi teachers of today, and i feel that i would greatly benefit from your guidance within my training in the future to come.

My experience in Chinese martial arts as been for over 35 years, studying Lau Gar Kuen, under Grand Master Yau Gum Wah, reaching the teachers grade of second black belt, from this i furthered my knowledge of Chinese Martial Arts, by studying Tai Chi, my first encounter of Tai Chi was with Mark Peters a very respected teacher and widely known within the Tai Chi world, i studied for two years under Mark, but never found what i was looking for, even though his style had all the Martial elements of that i was used to for so many years, his style was called Yang, from the teachings of Professor Cheng Man Ching, i had the honor of training with Mark within this time and with some of Marks Teachers, Grand Master Tan Ching Ngee and Grand Master William CC Chen, after this introduction i new that Tai Chi was the right Path for me.

It was some time after this i attended a Tai Chi Caledonia run by the Tai Chi Union of Great Britain, where i met your good self Master Yue, and studied for the first time Chen Style Tai Chi. I knew once i started to train in this style, i had a passion for more, i knew without questune that this was the style for me, it had everything that i knew for the past 20 years, but also had something that made me want to know more, something that i felt was missing from all my past training, so this is when i sat down with yourself Master Liming Yue and asked your advise about training because i was worried about leaving my teachers of past, but on explaining you said, you will always have you past teachers knowledge, you will just be taking it to another level, i found this to be good advise and reassuring for me, and from that day Chen has been my only style for the past 18 years.

I have managed to train hard with yourself, and also had the pleasure to be able to train with Grand Master Chen Zhenglei, and Grand Master Kongjie Gou to name a few, but this has all contributed towards the level i have attained today.

As of today, has you are aware i hold the 4th Duan Wei but feel that being excepted as one of your indoor Student would greatly benefit me in going forward in my quest for knowledge.

So with all this in mind Master Liming Yue i would be most grateful if you could concider my application of becoming one of your indoor student in this coming new year 2014.

Kind Regards

Chiara ComoglioDear Master Liming,

I'd like to tell you about my feelings and my considerations of becoming one of your indoor students and about my martial life in order to explain my dreams and my goals.

I started studying Aikido in 2001. And l loved it. But soon enough I realized that I didn't like the teaching method. Here, in Western countries, people didn't want to understand the real martial arts' goals, neither to know how they can live better through the martial arts and the medicine.

People only want learn to fight. But this is not what I'm looking for.

In 2005, after reaching the first black belt grade (I° Dan), I decided to move my attention and my studies towards Shaolin and Taijiquan styles. My first approach with these martial arts was with Master Chang You Shin, one of the Chang Dsu Yao's sons. I practiced four years under his guide and I appreciated very much his teachings and his trainings. Master You Shin gaveme the basics and the fundamentals of these martial arts. But You Shin's style (Meihuaquan) wasn't the right style for me, so, with Riccardo, my partner, I looked for something different and, in 2011 we met Marco Fasanotti and Chiara Gilardino.

Practicing Chen style I realized that it has everything that I was looking for for the past 10 years. At the same time my attention was catched by Tuina massage, acupuncture, facial diagnosis and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Moreover I developed also an interest in Qì Gong and Nei Gong especially after reading about Master Noguchi and his Seitan Taiheki. After a few months under the Marco and Chiara's guide, I decided, with Riccardo, to contact you, Master Liming, to increase my knowledge, to achieve another level of awareness.

This is because you are one of the most experienced knowledgeable Chen Tai Chi teachers, a Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei's indoor students and a helpfully and cute person.

With you I can train hard but pleasantly, and this contributes to improve myself. This also gave me the possibility and the pleasure to train with Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei.

I feel that being accepted as one of your indoor students will help me in going forward in my quest for knowledge and awareness.

So, now that you know my thoughts, Master Liming Yue, I would be most grateful if you decide to let me becoming one of your indoor students in this coming new year 2014.

Kind Regards

Riccardo Romano

To Master Liming Yue.

My journey in martial arts begins in 2004, at age 22.I started practicing Yang style Taijiquan, studying the 24 form as taught by Dr.Paul Lamin his videos. I was learning alone because at that time Taijiquan was not so popular inTorino, my city, and I didn't find a valid instructor to follow.

After a few years of practicing alone I discovered in my city the school of Master ChangDsu Yao, founded by him in the late 1980 and now continued by his students and his sonssince his death. In this school they teached me many foundamentals such as stances, kicks, punches, and elbow strikes; a variation of the Ba Duan jin Qi Gong form; I learntthe first two levels of something they called Shaolin Chuan, (I discovered later on that itwas a modified version of Northern Changquan) and I learnt also a modified version ofthe Yang style Taijiquan 108 form (mainly teached in Taiwan). In general I was notsatisfied by the program of this school, they were too similar to Japanese Karate Do thanChinese type of Martial arts. I was looking for something different.

At the beginning of 2010, after 3 years in this school, I injured my back. I decided toquit this school and to continue my search and practice alone or in seminars around mycity. At that time I was really interested also in Xingyiquan and Bajiquan but again herethere aren’t trusted masters or teachers that promote this styles; the ones who did it offerbad programs of study. So, I continued to use internet to search good places were tostudy. In those days I practiced Kyudo, the Japanese archery style.

However It was only by chance that I saw on YouTube a video of a very good Chinese

Instructor doing Laojia in the park in New York. I was really impressed.Obviously I didn’t know neither the style or the form this person was doing, so I decidedto know more about that. I drop off to many web sites and related videos in order tounderstand more. Again by chance I saw a video of a Chinese person doing Taijiquan. That video really impressed me and amazed me very much. Few days later I found thatthe person in that video was Gran Master Chen Zheng Lei doing Laojia form of Chenstyle Taijiquan.

Page 12: Indoor Student Book - Tai Chi Centre Student Book... · Indoor Student Book of Grandmaster Liming Yue 1st February 2014 held in Tai Chi Centre China Town, Manchester, U.K

No more doubts, I realized that I finally found my path. I wanted to learn Chen styleTaijiquan trying to become as good as the Gran Master Chen Zheng Lei.Now, in 2014, I'm entering on my fourth year of practice Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan andthis will be also my tenth year as martial arts practitioner. During this first 3 years Ipracticed Chen Taijiquan around 3/5 times a week. In the very first year I did it almostevery day. I started with some unkown teachers in my city, then I move to MarcoFasanotti that, at the end, led me to you. I was (and I am) so excited to see that you are apupil and an indoor student of Chen Zheng Lei and you cannot imagine my feelingswhen, last May (2013), I participated to his seminar in Manchester. On top of that I’mvery lucky because I share this passion together with my girlfriend. You know her, she isChiara. She is more advanced than me, so I have the fortune to improve my skillscomparing me with her and asking her for suggestions and opinions.

Anyway, It is almost incredible how my entire life has been affected by doing Chen styleTai Chi, my body has changed (and it’s still changing), my feelings, my emotions and myreactions improved; my interactions and relationships with others have improved; almostevery aspect of my daily life now is better, starting from my attention to my skills andmany more. I think that all of these signs tell me that I’m on the right way.My interest and passion about this martial art every day reinvigorates. I’m really gladabout this. I also really enjoy to teach it, promote it and see with my eyes how it affectsothers life.

Even though now I do 3 day jobs - in addition to teaching Tai Chi - to live here in Italy(I’m an accountant in the morning, a web designer plus music producer at the afternoon/evening) I always find the time in my week to practice Tai Chi Chuan because it helps meto do the other things better.

In addition, during this last months of 2013, I discovered myself be interested in QiGong more than before, because I saw that exist a more deep side of it called NeiGong / Shen Gong. I’m really interested in this because the more I read, the more ithelps me understand Taijiquan and vice-versa. I believe that this two are strictlyconnected one to the other or perhaps are the same thing from two different sides. However, for these many reasons I would like to ask you to become one of your IndoorStudents, hoping to satisfying your requirements and your trust.

Yours sincerely

Riccardo Romano

Richard Northwood

Dear Liming,

Following our recent conversation, I would like to formally request to become an indoor student with yourself.

It has been 16 years since I started Tai Chi under the tuition of Janet and Ian Murray at the first Tai Chi Centre in Chinatown. Since then I have travelled with you to China twice; endorsed by Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei as an advanced Xinjia practitioner (Handan 1999), and I also received by Tai Chi teaching certificate in Zhau Zhuo (2000) from Master Zhang Dongwu.

Since receiving the teaching certificate, I have held elementary classes in Manchester, Sandbach, Congleton and Macclesfield. I have worked tirelessly to promote Tai Chi within the Adult Education service, and have referred many diligent students to your centre for DVD's, equipment and further training. Two of my students have won the British Open Kung Fu championship at Leasowe Sports Centre. I have also won medals in form and pushing hands competitions alike.

On a personal note, I would like to say that you have been an inspiration to me, and I would not be half the man that I am now without your patient and skilful teaching. It is with sincere gratitude that I humbly ask to become your indoor student, so I can take the next phase in my training and as a result - add to your considerable Tai Chi legacy.

Yours faithfully,

Richard

To Master Liming Yue I would be honoured if you would accept my application to become one of your indoor students.

Although I have not known you for a long period of time it is very clear to me that you are one of the very best chen style tai chi in the world today and I would be hugely grateful to benefit from your knowledge and experience if you would accept me as an indoor student. I have studied shito-ryo, wing chun and yang style tai chi and always considered them to be acceptable until I started to practice chen style tai chi and I met you who greatly impressed me and made me realise that I want to spend my future studying and teaching chen style tai chi and be taught by a true master such as you.

Finding chen style tai chi and then finding a master like you has made me realise that my passion is with chen style tai chi and I would be deeply honoured if you would accept me as one of your indoor students. Thank youTerry Whall

To Master Liming Yue,

I wish to forward my application for acceptance as an Indoor Student. You are one of the most highly regarded Tai Chi Masters in the UK and I'm looking forward to continuing my training with you.

I began my study of Chinese Martial Arts in 2001, when I started attending Lau Gar Kuen Kung Fu classes in Stafford, under the instruction of Sifu Pete Hornby. I showed very little natural ability and spent the first 6 months falling over my own feet but, with guidance and perseverance, I began to make progress. By 2006 I was competent enough to attain my 1st Degree Black Sash. I was proud of my achievement but it had come at a cost: during my training I had injured my shoulder while sparring because I was too tense. The injury prevented me from any further sparring. To make matters worse I had a sciatica attack shortly after my grading.

Unable to do any Kung Fu, I started learning a little bit of Yang style Tai Chi from another instructor in Stafford and studied some Qiqong with Sifu Pete Hornby but it didn't really interest me.

Around that time Sifu Garry Seghers started his first Chen Tai Chi class, I knew him through Lau Gar so I went along to make up the numbers. To my surprize I began to enjoy it. I was able to pick up the shape of the moves quickly because of my Kung Fu background and this enabled me to concentrate on the relaxation element. Once I was able to relax I found I could resume my Lau Gar training as well.

In 2008 I started travelling up to Manchester twice a week, with Sifu Pete Hornby & Sifu Garry Seghers, and that's when I began training with you. After that I found that my martial arts began to improve rapidly. The same year I qualified with you as a Level 3 Chen Tai Chi Instructor and opened my own club in Codsall, just outside Wolverhampton. I found that teaching improves my Tai Chi & I love seeing people doing a form well and knowing that I taught it to them.

Since then I've continued to develop as a martial artist and as a person. I've achieved my 3rd Degree Black Sash in Lau Gar Kuen Kung Fu, came 1st in the BKFA Nationals Forms competition and, in 2013, I became a Level 4 Chen Tai Chi Instructor.

I would be hugely honoured if you would accept me as an indoor student so that I can continue to develop both my martial arts & my internal training.

Best Regards,

Alan

Dear Master Liming Yue,

It would be a great honour to be accepted as your indoor student/disciple. I have studied martial arts under many teachers and practiced with many Chinese masters and nothing compares to the knowledge that I have gained by training under you.

I would like to take this opportunity to say over the last 10 years you have been a great Tai Chi Teacher as well as a mentor in life. You have taught me many lessons about Wushu and life, many of these I am only just starting to grasp and understand now.

Thank you for everything!

Yours sincerely

Master Liming,

Thanks so much for another brilliant weekend. The push hands and applications were very enjoyable and I think will make a big difference to my Tai Chi ongoing.

I would like to respectively ask to become your indoor student. I have enjoyed the last 5 and a half years training with you more then I can say and would be honored to be an indoor student and continue to learn from you in the years ahead and pass on the benefits to my own students here.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin

Dear Grandmaster Liming Yue

Please consider this as my request to be one of your indoor students.

I would consider it a great honour to be accepted as an indoor student. I feel that this would increase my knowledge and ability in Chen style Tai Chi under your expert guidance and teaching.

I have been training in martial arts since 1987, but my greatest improvement has been in the last three years after regular classes with yourself. I know that I have a long way to go yet in my Tai Chi journey and hope that the journey during the next three years can continue as one of your indoor students.

With greatest respect

Grandmaster Liming

It would be a great honour for me if you would accept this humble student into your Indoor Student Group.

I was introduced to you by Steven Burton in 2000 just before my first trip to China with you and some of your students. Since then I have been on a fantastic journey of discovery, met some outstanding people and made some very close friends and I particularly include you, Liming, as one of my close friends. You introduced me to the physical and mental approach to Tai Chi and Qi Gong and eventually to the spiritual area of Shen Gong. It has been a most enjoyable and rewarding journey so far. I have learned

so much about Tai Chi and about myself. But there I still so much to learn and I look forward you being with me on my journey to help and guide me as you have done over the last 13 years.

It is because of your guidance and training that I decided to retire from Banking and develop my own Tai Chi company, Dragonfly Tai Chi. I have been teaching and developing my teaching skills for the last 8 years but full time over the last 3 years. You have always been there to help, guide and answer my questions whenever I have had an issue with the direction I was going.

Tai Chi has taken me down a different, more spiritual and rewarding path and I thank you for helping me through so far. I love the time I spend practising and teaching Tai Chi. I hope that I am able to help others in a similar way that you have helped me.

I should be most grateful if you would accept me as one of your Indoor Students so that I may deepen my understanding and

practice further and to use my skills to help others progress on their journey.

Many Thanks

Pamela HedgeDear Master Liming Yue,

I humbly request consideration to be accepted as one of your Indoor Students. As you know I began tai chi because of ill health and was advised that regular practice would help me to restore my health and it has to be said that I have not looked back since. I was introduced to Yang style tai chi by 2 local instructors, first by Edwin Tolputt in 1999 and in 2000 began working with instructor Martina Marie-Luise Paulinus.

After years gaining a good foundation and as a keen student I was encouraged to take part in advanced Yang style training which gave me the confidence to train with Master John Ding. I made two visits to China with Master Ding to work with numerous Yang masters to improve my skills. Meeting with Grandmaster Yang Zhen Guo was a real highlight. Fascinated with the health benefits of qigong and tai chi I began to study Traditional

Chinese Medicine in more depth and qualified as a Medical Qigong Therapist in 2005. Willing to broaden my experience I attended a Chen seminar in 2005 with Grandmaster Xiao Wang in London where I first experienced silk reeling and Chen style push hands. Two further short introductory experiences of Chen style tai chi were gained at a later date with north east instructors Keith Thomas and Stewart Agar. After many years of assisting at classes I studied to be an instructor through ICHM mentored by Marie and qualified as a Senior Yang style instructor in 2006. I was able to offer Qigong exercises and forms including Shibashi and Wild Goose, Meditation, Yang 8, Yang 10, Yang Foundation form, Yang Long form, Yang Straight sword, Yang Staff form, Yang sticky and Push hands as well as share my knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was not until 2008 that I began my Chen style training with your honourable self and over the years have gained experience of Health & Breathing exercises, Silk reeling, Wu Qin Xi, Ba Duan Jin and Liu Zi Jue Qigong forms, Chen 11 Form and alternative, Chen 18 Form, Loa Jia Form parts 1 & 2, Chen Push Hands, Chen 11 and Chen 16 Fan forms, Chen Sabre form, Pear Blossom Spear form and Chen Straight Sword form. Following your input into introducing me to your Chen 11 fan form my interest has been further enriched now with experience being gained in both the Kung Fu Fan Form and Yang 18 Fan Form. In 2009 it was a delight to be involved in training with Grandmaster Chen Zheng Lei at the Chen Tai Chi Centre in Manchester. In 2011 I qualified as a Level 3 Chen Instructor through the Chen Style Tai Chi Centre in Manchester. In the summers of 2012 and 2013 I was lucky enough to returned to China with you which helped me to gain more experience of Chen style Tai Chi and Qigong. Weapons training and an introduction to Xin Jia were well appreciated bonus experiences this time around in your home town. Recognizing your exceptional teaching abilities and amazing tai chi skills from the start I have always encouraged my students to participate in

training with such a talented and sharing tai chi master. Whilst only a small number were prepared to travel to Manchester and beyond, I am pleased to say many more have been able to participate in your biennial seminars carried out in Billingham over recent years. I have always been keen to develop my tai chi and qigong recognising the importance of self development hence it would be wonderful if you would consider accepting me as one of your Indoor Students. I feel more than confident that I have found in you a real quality master who will guide me to yet another level personally and to improve me as a tai chi instructor for all those who accompany me on my path.

Patricia Flatt Dear Master Yue,

It seems almost absurd that I should be writing you to ask you to take me on as one of your indoor students, since I only have a sum total of three weeks of experience in working with you. On this level, I feel presumptuous and unworthy to ask you for such an honor. However, I also find that this represents a truly grand opportunity that I cannot let pass by. Your proficiency, dedication, and love for Tai Chi Chuan is self-evident and training with you (even if only for such a short while) has been one of the best experiences that I have had. In traveling with you in China, I also found that you are one of the nicest people that I have ever met. You truly care for all people and always go out of your way to ensure that you are putting their growth and well-being above your own. I witnessed you do this time and time again throughout our trip, especially in Changsha when you helped my group reach Beijing safely and in time to catch our connecting flight to the United States. I admire your character and want to be more like you in my own life. I would consider myself truly blessed to be able to commit my time and dedication to a long term training program with you and hope that you will strongly consider taking me on as one of your indoor students.

My background in martial arts began when I was an undergraduate at the University of Denver (way before Tomena was born). Throughout this 5 year time period, I trained in Tae Kwon Do under the international tae kwon do foundation, culminating in my first degree black belt. I left Denver in pursuit of my PhD from Vanderbilt University and also had my daughter at this time, so unfortunately, I did not continue my martial arts practice at this time. During my postdoctoral fellowship, I religiously took a cardio kickboxing class to stay in shape, but did not have other formal training outside of this. When I accepted my current teaching position at Western Oregon University, I was lucky to find a wonderful martial arts instructor that rekindled my passion for the martial arts. Professor Allen teaches on the WOU campus as well, and has both a karate and tai chi class that he offers each term. He also teaches tai chi at his dojo in Salem. I fast became one of his regular students in as many classes as I could take (both in karate and in tai chi) although, I really fell in love with Tai Chi at this time and have been practicing daily for the last 5 years. I am also practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu two to three times per week. I have found that this is also a predominantly soft martial art and that it complements tai chi foundational principles and has given me additional experience with grappling and chi na concepts.

My instructor here has a very diverse background in martial arts, beginning with Shotokan Karate at

Page 26: Indoor Student Book - Tai Chi Centre Student Book... · Indoor Student Book of Grandmaster Liming Yue 1st February 2014 held in Tai Chi Centre China Town, Manchester, U.K

ththe age of 14. He currently holds 5 don black belt status under Chuck Norris' system, and has extensive experience with Hapkido in addition to Tai Chi. He began studying Tai Chi about 18 years ago and this has become his predominant style for teaching and in his personal practice. Our style is a mixed tai chi style having elements of all five major families plus the influence of the other martial systems that my teacher has familiarity with; however, the predominant influence is in Wu-style Tai Chi. Professor Allen's teacher is a retired Hong Kong police officer that took lessons directly from Ma Yueliang and Wu Ying-hua. I feel that the foundational training that I have received from him has been really wonderful and has truly sparked my love for tai chi. Unfortunately, my instructor here is getting older and has talked about scaling back his practice here, which makes me incredibly sad. I feel that I am at a place where I am just beginning to understand the dynamics of tai chi better and want to learn more about application and more advanced forms.

Meeting you this summer and being exposed to Chen-style Tai Chi has really left a lasting impression with me. Initially, I was amazed with the differences that I felt between the styles. Stances, the timing of the steps, and the martial power of this system were the most striking examples. It made me want to soak up all that I could about the Chen-style when I returned from China this summer, and my current teacher has been very supportive and encouraged me to explore all that I can. Soon after my return, I attended a seminar of Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei here in Oregon. It was a wonderful seminar on Laojia part 1 and basic concepts of push hands. I have since learned the full sequence of Laojia part 1, although I know it will take many years to fully understand all of its nuances and flavors. It has fast become one of my favorite forms, and as I've played it more, I not only recognize the differences, but now the similarities with my current forms are becoming more evident. It is really exciting to feel how these cousin forms go together, especially Liuhebafa chuan. But I think that the most influential thing that I learned from Grandmaster Chen's seminar was something that he said to us…he said, “I cannot give you kung fu. I can only guide you on your path and teach you the form. To really learn kung fu, you must lock yourself in a room and throw away the key and practice. And the practice must be made using intent, otherwise there is no benefit to the practice.” I have really taken that to heart and have established my own personal times to work out and play tai chi, in addition to any lessons that I may have.

If you accept me as one of your indoor students, I promise you that this is not a commitment that I take lightly. It is a commitment made in dedication and hard work, promising to uphold the integrity of Chen-style Tai Chi, to improve my own health and martial ability, and to promote the teaching of tai chi within my community. I know that my opportunities to work with you directly will be few and far between, at least for the immediate future. However, as I work to build a new practice here (or if I am absolutely lucky and Victor decides to make his new home here – I will help him build his practice in Corvallis), we/I will hopefully be able to build up the clientele to have you come out once in awhile for a seminar, and I will continue to promote the TCM Study Abroad option at WOU. The commitment to Tai Chi that I want to make, is a lifelong pursuit to building happiness and connection within my community. It is my deepest hope that I can continue to do this under your guidance.

Thank you for your considerations in accepting me as an indoor student.

Bill DancockDear Grandmaster Yue.

It would be a great honour if you would consider me to become an indoor student to you.

Over the last twenty six years of practising Tai Chi and Qi Gong I have learnt a great deal, and since attending your classes and seminars, you have re- enforced my understanding of Tai chi, and also you have corrected some of my misguided understandings, and continue to do so, with the conversations that we have had over the last few years.

My knowledge of Tai Chi whether Yang or Chen has deepened to which I can only be grateful to you for your help and understanding.

Whatever you decide I shall look forward to continue to attend your classes and seminars.

Respectfully Yours.

Your Student.

“From the very first time of meeting Master Liming Yue, I instinctively knew that something very special had happened. The beauty of his forms movement and the power of his explosive energy release, seeming to come from nowhere set me upon a journey of discovery that is just as exciting now as it was then.” In the ensuing years, my Master has become a Grandmaster, and I have become a Master through your guidance, instruction and advice. I wish to apply to become an indoor student in order for our relationship to deepen, and the excitement of learning all aspects of Chen Style Tai Chi to continue and flourish.

30th December 2013Dear Master Liming,

In March of 2007 I became quite ill. I went through a series of tests before being given a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. This was a major shock as I did not know how this would effect me and this took some time to come to terms with.

I was told about Tai Chi and how this may help with certain symptoms of my condition. It was in September of that year I started a local class run by Nick Taylor. I had no previous experience of any martial art and knew nothing of Tai Chi or of my instructor.

After a few classes I could feel the benefits. I particularly enjoyed the focus on the self and the awareness of the moment. I could escape for an hour or two. Nothing else mattered or was important. I felt great energy in that class and that was great to be a part of.

I continued to practise under Nick’s instruction for over 6 months before deciding to attend one of your seminars in Porto, Portugal in the summer of 2008. I was very nervous and felt out of place in a room full of so many experienced practitioners, not just of Chen Style Tai Chi but many other martial arts. It was here that I realised how individual this was to each person because of their age, build, flexibility, experience, stamina or health. I did not have to copy exactly , the hand or arm position of my instructor as he is built completely differently to me. As long as I followed the key principles, it was all about me and my feeling. This helped me then and has helped when teaching , especially with new students.

I continued to study with Nick for many

Page 33: Indoor Student Book - Tai Chi Centre Student Book... · Indoor Student Book of Grandmaster Liming Yue 1st February 2014 held in Tai Chi Centre China Town, Manchester, U.K

years and thank him for inspiring me to go further in my practice but in particular, for introducing me to you.

My study and training intensified from this point and I attended many seminars to study Tai Chi.

In 2009 I took my first trip to China with your study group. It was an experience I will never forget.

We trained with Master Chen Yu in a park in Beijing, ate some amazing food and you told stories of your experiences as a child and throughout your life including all of your training experience under so many great Masters . It was then very apparent that I had met someone who was to have such a positive and meaningful influence on my life.

This was to be the first of four study trips to China. Each one has been unique for many reasons, the people, the training and especially the insight into the real China. It is a beautiful country with beautiful people.

I particularly enjoyed and benefited from the Qigong training in Beijing and in 2011 was awarded a 3rd Level Duan Wei from the Chinese Health Qigong Association. I regularly practise these exercises and love introducing elements to students for their individual health requirements. The benefits of these movements are endless and I look forward to learning the rest of the Qigong forms to broaden my knowledge.

In terms of my Tai Chi progression, in 2012 I reached Level 3 instructor. I have enjoyed so many trips all over Europe to attend your seminars and learnt so many intricate details, from posture work to applications and there is something new each time.

Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei’s visit this year was also a highlight in terms of my study.

For me, one of the most fundamental advantages of my experience since 2007 has been the friendships I have made. I feel that I am part of something quite special..

It has opened my mind and given me focus as well as improving my health and the health of my students which has been the most rewarding part.

For all of these reasons and many more, I thank you. I look forward to many more great experiences and hope I can do this as one of your Indoor Students.

With best wishes.

Michaela Sinclair st31 December 2013

Dear Master Liming Yue

The honour of having the opportunity to be considered as your Indoor Student provides me with time to reflect upon, and put into words, my relationship with Tai Chi, and with you.

I have been practising meditation for 20 years and have found this to be an essential and integral practise in developing my own sense of meaning and philosophical framework. In learning and practising Tai Chi and Qigong, I found the ideal means to incorporate movement with stillness, external with internal, and a deeper understanding of adaptation to change, allowing continuous transformation. The guiding principles of Tai Chi and Qigong do not conflict with my beliefs but, rather, deepen and enhance them. You have assisted me on this path.

In my endeavour to improve my understanding and practise of Tai Chi, I have attended many of your seminars and travelled with you through the UK, Europe and to China. This has also provided me with opportunities to train with, and be assessed by, the Chinese Health Qigong Association. During these years of training and travelling, I have often accepted the honour of acting as your personal assistant and I believe, in the traditional Chinese way, that this has benefited me greatly since it has afforded me the opportunity of observing and learning from you not only in your teaching, but in the way you live and exemplify the principles of Tai Chi in every aspect of your life.

It is this learning and inspiration that I try to absorb into my own life, in how I teach my students and in my promotion of Tai Chi and Qigong for the benefit of others.

My hope, if accepted as your Indoor Student, is to further gain a deeper embodiment of the Tai Chi principles I have witnessed and experienced with you.

Yours respectfully,

Michaela Sinclair

Dear Master Liming

I am writing to you to apply to become your indoor student. I have practised Tai Chi for around 24 years. I started studying Chen Tai Chi with you in 1998.

Tai Chi has influenced my life in so many different ways and has become a way of being. As well as developing my martial skills it has also helped me maintain good health. My spirituality and my philosophy of life have been enhanced by Tai Chi and your teaching.

I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to train with such teachers as Grandmaster Chen Zheng Lei and Grandmaster Gou Kong Jie.

This gives me the opportunity to thank you for the skills and knowledge you have passed on to me which has been of great benefit to my life.

To Master Liming Yue,

I respectfully forward my request for consideration to be accepted as your indoor student.

My experience in Martial Arts first began in the Korean style of Taekwondo. After many years of experience training and teaching, I began to look farther afield at other martial styles to help me to better understand my own knowledge and to progress.

It wasn't until I found myself with a severe leg injury as a result of training that I decided to look in earnest at Chinese Internal martial arts, renowned for their meditative and health benefits in addition to their martial prowess. With some luck, I managed to find a class teaching Chen Style Tai Chi. I found the holistic approach to the system very compelling and began my training in earnest. After some years of training, I knew it was time to expand my knowledge of Chen Style Tai Chi and that is when I first

happened across one of your Xin Jia seminars.

Since that time and the years that have followed, I continue to find your teachings practical, friendly and with the ability to understand each of your students' individual needs.

Under your guidance I have been fortunate to have learned and continue to learn many things. With your help I have trained in China with a number of memorable martial artists, earned Chen Tai Chi instructors qualifications and successfully pass a Dan Wei examination in Chi Kung.

I humbly ask you to consider my application as your indoor student.

Paul Miller (Wu Xing)

Dear Grandmaster Yue

I would like to ask humbly for your consideration to become recognised as one of your indoor students this coming Chinese New Year. I have studied within the martial arts for the last 30 years firstly with Shotokan Karate, Lau Gar Kuen, Kyoshu Jutsu and have trained with many excellent and inspirational teachers all over the country.

I first came Into contact with Taiji with Master J Yau from Lau Gar, studying Yang Style originally with Rob Kanski in the mid to late 90's. My first introduction to Chenjiagou Taijiquan was from Steven Burton when he came to teach a class in Southport. I Became very ill in the late 90s and my martial arts had to cease. I picked my training back up mid 2007 with Chenjiagou Taijiquan. I have been very lucky since then to train many many times with Chen Xioawang, Chen Xiaoxing and Chen Ziqiang amongst many other great Taijiquan teachers based in the UK.

I have been teaching Chen Taiji since 2010 Since my instructor was diagnosed with Leukaemia. However, I recently started a degree in Traditional Chinese medicine and have had to fell my 26 classes a week to just 4. Sadly my instructor, mentor and best friend Lee passed away 17 weeks ago, 3 days before I was to take my 2nd Duan Wei grading and I cancelled.

As I explained to you in Leeds during our brief meeting, Whilst my friend was ill I felt I lost much needed direction, motivation and correction and my own training unfortunately hit an all time low, Lee was ill for over 3 years and as my main focus was to teach others Laojia Yilu, my Jian and dao forms for example have been completely forgotten. The reason I'm asking for your consideration is that I need compassion and guidance from you. To me you are the Best chenjiagou Taijiquan coach we have Here based in the UK and if I want to progress in this beautiful art so that my students can progress I realise I must take guidance and correction from the best.

Please accept me as one of your indoor students and help me to achieve the goals I wish for. Grandmaster Yue, thank you kindly and I await your consideration and reply and thank you for this kind opportunity.

Warm regards

Paul Miller (Wu Xing)

08/01/2014Dear Grand Master Yue,

I am writing to make a formal and humble request that you accept me as your Indoor Student. I have trained with you on several occasions in Manchester and in Devon and have always left feeling inspired and full to

the brim with new understandings of the Taijiquan and Qigong that I have studied with you.

I have been practicing Chinese martial arts for 12 years seriously and have dabbled prior to that. My training has been 70% external and 30% internal so far with most of it coming through my 7 Star Mantis Kung Fu lineage and more recently through my Chen Style practice. Lineage is something I find to be really important for authenticity and for ensuring that the style continues to grow in a pure way. I have worked really hard under my Sifu Derek Frearson and Grand Master Lee Kam Wing in the 7 Star Mantis to become a Sifu and to hopefully work towards honouring my teachers and doing justice to such a brilliant and rich external system.

For the Chen Style I have been a person with too many houses. I feel that for me it is now time to make a firm commitment to a teacher and to a lineage. I have enjoyed talking to you recently about this and have been left a little wiser as to what is really important in Chen, namely consistent practice, regular contact with your Sifu and above all else adhering to the principals regardless of where your form comes from. Although learning my form from different people has given me insight into the style and into many different the movements may be performed I feel that if I continue this way I will become a 'jack of all trades and a master of none' I want to at least have a chance at moving towards mastery!

More generally, you have always advised me towards moderation in my external practice and to avoid over training and to be honest with you I need this encouragement. There are many Sifu's of external Chinese martial arts who push the 'Never Give Up' attitude of the Shaolin Temple and although I strongly believe in this I now know that this is only the first stage of training and that moderation and the long term cultivation of health are higher and better goals. The better teachers in my humble opinion know this very well. I know that you are one of those teachers.

Although my form may be a little different due to my training and it is errant in many places due to my youth as a practitioner I hope that you will accept me as your student. I look forward to training with you in the future and to spending more time in your company.

Yours Sincerely

Robert Byrnes

Dear Master Liming Yue,

I would be deeply grateful if you would consider my application to study with you as an indoor student. To be accepted by you as an indoor student would be a very great honour and I would work extremely

hard to show myself worthy of such trust and do everything in my power to be a credit to you.

I realise that I am not as advanced as many of your top students but I love Tai Chi and I have a great deal of determination and always try to be a person of integrity which I hope will help me become the sort of indoor student you would desire.

Normally I wouldn't put myself forward in this way but I do not want to miss the opportunity to train as an indoor student with you or for you to think that I am not interested or committed to learning Tai Chi to the highest level.

Although I have attended trips, seminars and workshops with you and I feel you know me well as a person, I thought you might like to know a little bit more about my Martial Arts Training.

My father was a Martial Arts Instructor who ran his own Karate school but also studied Tai Chi for his own development under Master Chee Soo, so I grew up surrounded by the martial arts ethos. It was from my father that I first learnt many Martial Arts applications including Self-defence techniques and push-hands. He encouraged me to learn from other teachers and disciplines and was greatly saddened when I gave up learning judo despite showing real aptitude, competing at regional level and performing in the demo team. However, I prefer to learn in a pressure free environment.

It wasn't until I suffered a nasty leg injury in 2003/4 that left me technically lame that I finally started to

study Tai Chi formally. The orthopaedic surgeon explained that even with an operation they could never really repair the damage to my leg sufficiently and that my only hope was to find a good Tai Chi instructor who could help build the muscles around the injury to support the leg. I decided not to have the operation and opted for Tai Chi.

I was extremely lucky to find a teacher called Ken Dempsey (one of Chee Soo's top students, Lee style)

Page 40: Indoor Student Book - Tai Chi Centre Student Book... · Indoor Student Book of Grandmaster Liming Yue 1st February 2014 held in Tai Chi Centre China Town, Manchester, U.K

and because of my father's teaching, I progressed quite quickly and in addition to the form, push hands and qi-gong I was lucky enough to learn some Poison Hand techniques/Dook Sau and foot flow from Chee Soo's, Feng Shou. After two years the injury to my leg began to heal and some movement was restored. Sadly, not long after this Ken retired and his students were left looking for a new teacher.

I was very fortunate to find another good teacher, Bill Dancock from Sunswallow, but now had to undertake learning another style, Yang Style Tai Chi. After studying with Bill for four years he made me an instructor and after two further years encouraged me to start my own classes/club. It was through Bill, that I was lucky enough to meet you, Master Liming, and given the opportunity to learn Chen Style Tai Chi, the one style that my first formal teacher, Ken Dempsey, had always wanted to learn!

In addition to the above experience I am a Registered Grade A Instructor of Tai Chi with TCUGB, I have been awarded Outstanding Achievement Awards for Shaolin Kungfu and was part of the Shaolin Kungfu demo team, I am a Martial Arts Coach (BCCMA level 2) and a qualified Self-Defence Instructor (Btec, Level 3). I was also fortunate enough to train with Sifu Anthony Rushton in Full Range Progressive Martial Arts for two years. This training combined with techniques taught to me by my father and Ken, and my own learning and application development, all contributed to helping me secure my Self-Defence Instructor's Award. The latter qualification is an Industry recognised award i.e. it enables me to train frontline workers in Prisons, Care Facilities, Doormen/women, etc.

All my Teachers have held you in the highest esteem. You are a wonderful Teacher and I do not want to be trained by anyone else. Your capabilities as a Martial Artist and Teacher are beyond question. We are all very lucky that you are willing to share your skills and wisdom.

I hope you will consider my application favourably,

With deepest respect,

Natalie Faria-Vare

Dear Grand Master Liming Yue

I hereby write to you to be considered as an Indoor Student of yours.

My journey into Martial Arts began many moons ago, and have covered Judo, JuiJutsu and Kyokushinkai Karate, and I

was fortunate to train with excellent teachers as well in

Friesland, as in Holland and even Japan. Further more I

trained as an Unarmed Combat Instructor in the Royal

Dutch Army and again trained with some awesome

instructors in Wales and France. I also trained with some

of the best in Street Self Defence instructors, like Peter

Consterdine Geoff Thompson of the British Combat

Association. One could say that Fighting and Martial Arts

have always been part of me for over 50-years. It was

about 10-years ago that I really discovered Tai-Chi.

I started training under Nail O.Floin and soon I was also

training with Master Wang Hijun. I think I was hooked on it

from day 1 and I was happy training, until sircumstances

,which are known to you, forced me to look somewhere

else for training. It was through my good friend and

Martial Arts Brother" John Collins" that I met You Yourself,

and as the saying goes, " the rest is history”

What struck me about you is the fact that not only is your

Tai_Chi skill of a very high level, you are also very good in

teaching the stuff, that combined with a good sense of

humor makes you for me someone I like to train with.

And because of you, other doors started to open, and I

could broaden my horizon in the Martial Arts, like getting

involved with the Health Qigong and going to Brussles to

train with the top instructors of the Chinese Health Qigong

Association and training Dim Mak with Sifu Steven Burton,

for which I am gratefull.

And eventhough I am still a relative new beginner in this

beautiful art of movement, Tai-Chi has become a major

part of my life. I realy enjoy it, and I will promote it more

and more so that more people will hear about it and have

the chance to try it out for themself, and maybe start a Tai-

Chi journey of theit own.

With Kind Regards,

Arend Wijmenga

Cemil EgeliDear Master Liming

I have practised internal arts for around 20 years and began studying Chen Tai Chi with you in 1998. My Tai Chi journey has in many ways paralleled my journey of life. Over the years you have taught me much Chen Tai Chi including forms, weapons, Pao Choi, Qigong and philosophy. You have also given me the opportunity to learn with teachers such as Grandmaster Chen Zheng Lei and Grandmaster Gou Kong Jie.

Thank you for the support and advice you have given me over the years. It would indeed be a privilege to be formally accepted as one of your students.

Thank you

Cemil Egeli

I was then introduced to you and the amazing martial art of Chen Style Tai Chi and from then on I have never looked back. You are truly a very talented master and I have learmt so much from you not just tai chi and qigong but you have also intrduced me to the world of Chinese Medicine and through your help and guidance I now run my own Chinese Therapy practice as well as teaching Chen styule tai chi and qigong.

I look forward to training with you for many years to come.

Yours faithfully

Rebecca WellsDear Grandmaster Liming Yue,

I have been practising yang style Tai Chi since I was 13, initially learning from our yang instructor Martina Marie-Luise Paulinus. She recognised my potential and suggested I begin to take part in advanced Yang style training. I was given the opportunity of working with Master John Ding too which was a good experience. Marie then suggested I train to be a Yang style Tai Chi Instructor and I qualified in 2006. I was happy to assist in her classes, but have been teaching regularly since leaving university in 2011. I teach various Qigong exercises and meditations, Yang 8, Yang 10, Yang Foundation Form, Yang sticking and push hands and a variety of Fan forms at the classes.

Whilst other work commitments requires me to work each weekend, which has certainly placed restrictions on my training in your Manchester Centre, it has not stopped me learning Chen Style Tai Chi. I regularly attend advanced training on Friday evenings allowing me to work closely with both your instructors, Stephen Brown and Pamela Hedge. I have gained valuable insight into Chen Forms experiencing training of empty handed forms and Qigong exercises including: Wu Qin Xi, both Chen 11 forms, Chen 18 and Lao Jia sections 1 and 2, as well as straight sword, Spear, Fan forms 11 and 16 and some push hands practice from time to time too. Consequently, when I do get the opportunity to attend your seminars in Billingham and Germany, I have been able to develop greater understanding and I am able to improve my level of Chen style Tai Chi.

Additionally, in 2012 I was fortunate enough to be able to travel with you to China. It was an amazing trip which brought me to the origin of this ancient art and was delighted to practice Tai Chi and Qigong at so many wonderful sites along the way. The visit spurred me on to learn some Chinese too from some Chinese students in 2013 whilst working at a local school.

My classes have enjoyed me sharing the Chen 11 forms with them and are keen to take things further. Also, although I do not teach these in class, I have also learnt Yang straight sword Form, Yang 18 Fan Form, Kung Fu Fan Form and Beautiful Sunset Fan Form.

I would be incredibly honoured if you could continue to take me under your wing and accept me as one of your esteemed indoor students to further my confidence and development towards becoming a fully fledged Chen Style Instructor.

Yours sincerely

Rebecca Wells

Lawrence Andrew Reekie

Dear Master Liming Yue

I began practicing Tai Chi when I was young. My Farther taught Yang style. I learnt the basic movements there. I practiced two very short forms I knew as Heavenly Circle and Sea of tranquility. As a teenager I changed to training in rugby, boxing and kick boxing. The kickboxing classes had an emphasis on self-defense. I carried this on until I moved to Ayrshire in Scotland. Here I found a club that practiced martial arts; the style was Wang Kong Shou Tao. I gained my first belt and continued to practice until I decided to move to Manchester. Here I was fortunate to find the Tai Chi Centre.

I have only been practicing Chen style since January 2013 and have enjoyed it greatly. I have learnt the 18 step and Sabre form. I have begun learning the first moves of Laojin. I have won a bronze, silver and gold in pushing hands tournaments. This has been through the excellent mentoring of Master Aamir. From the small amount that I have learnt, it has proven to be an art of great depth. Its ancient, rich tapestry includes philosophy, self-defense, health benefits and the methods to understand Chi. I wish to learn as must as I can. So I respectfully request the honor of being accepted as your indoor student. This is rare and valuable opportunity to be taught by such a high authority.

Thank you

Yours sincerely

Lawrence Reekie

Stephen BrownDear Master Liming Yue,

I humbly request consideration to be accepted as one of your indoor

students.

As you may know from my application form to join the Tai Chi Union

of Great Britain I have been training in various styles of Taijiquan

since 1995 after I first found out about it in 1980 while watching the

Magnum PI TV series.

Unfortunately after joining my first class in Hartlepool the class

closed down due to lack of attendance and it wasn't until years later

in 2001 an instructor called Stan Rowlands began to teach Tai Chi

again in Hartlepool. I was taught the Jason Chan style of Tai Chi for

approximately 9 months.

The centre in which I was taught also hosted Yang Style lessons by

Mike Watson and as one of the five main styles I became very

interested and spent from 2002 to 2006 learning the Yang short

form, Yang long form, Sticking hands, Pushing hands, Da Lu 2 step,

Da Lu 3 step and Da Lu form and made many trips to London to learn

from John Ding.

In 2006 I heard Keith Thomas was teaching Chen Style in Stockton

On Tees and as the original style of Taijiquan I so wanted to learn it

but I faced a dilemma that put me in conflict with my Yang instructor

as he told me that I had to choose between Yang style or Chen style

and that I couldn't do both.

I decided that Chen style was more important for my progression in

the art and so joined Thomas and learned Chen 11, Chen Sword, Chen 56, Wild Goose and even Yang Sword Form as he

too had experience in that style. This is where I first heard of yourself as he had trained with you.

Then luckily I met Marie Pauline's at the Chinese New Year celebration of 2008 and was able to continue my Yang practice

as she had herself trained with John Ding, learning many qigong practices and together we learning the Yang 88 two

person fighting form as taught by Yang Jwing Ming.

I also trained with Pamela Hedge one of Marie's top instructors and on one of our outings met Stuart Agars who we

trained with on three occasions, one of which we met and trained with you in Accrington.

From that moment on you have been my instructor and friend and taught me Chen Style Taijiquan with great excitement

and plenty of encouragement. I look back on my path and see that it has brought me to the conclusion that I have been

heading in the right direction.

I have had the breadth of Taijiquan but I feel it is my next step to experience the depths of Taijiquan and I would welcome

no other instructor to take me on that journey than you. I hope you will acquiesce to be my guide.

Kind Regards,

Stephen Brown
