INDO-GLOBAL EDUCATION SUMMIT 2013 on academic collaborations with foreign universities will be held at New Delhi (Nov. 9),Hyderabad (Nov. 11), Chennai (Nov. 13), Bangalore (Nov. 15), Pune (Nov. 18), and Mumbai (Nov. 20).

Indo-Global Education Summit 2013 is a unique event which is being organized in India as a sequel to the highly successful EducationSummits held in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The Summit 2013 will have sessions on collaborative research programs, joint / dualdegree programs, twinning & transfer programs, faculty & student exchange programs, study abroad in India programs, distanceeducation programs, vocational education programs, and other academic partnerships. There will be separate sessions for studentrecruitment.

Major fields covered would be Engineering & Applied Sciences, Information Technology, Business & Management, Clinical & HealthSciences, Life Sciences & Biomedicine, Agricultural Sciences & Environment, Education & Technology, Arts & Humanities, and SocialSciences. There will be one-on-one meetings between representatives of Indian institutions and those of foreign universities forforging academic collaborations. The Summit 2013 is specifically designed for Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors, Directors, Principals,Provosts, Deans, Dept. Heads, Faculties, Scientists, Researchers, Trustees, Correspondents, Government Officials, and othersconnected with higher education.

We are pleased to invite you and your institution to the Indo-Global Education Summit 2013 oncollaborations with foreign universities.

The Indus Foundation is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to the promotion ofhigher education in India. The Foundation is well established internationally for over 17 years. Animportant mission of the Foundation is to galvanize high-impact collaborations between Indianinstitutions and reputable foreign universities.

An important feature of the Summit 2013 would be presentation of education awards to institutions,educationists, researchers, faculty, and students in recognition of their contributions and excellencein any of the various academic fields such as Engineering & Applied Sciences, InformationTechnology, Business & Management, Clinical & Health Sciences, Life Sciences & Biomedicine,Agricultural Sciences & Environment, Education & Technology, Arts & Humanities, and SocialSciences.

Participants of the Summit are eligible to send nominations for the awards which will be presentedduring the Summit 2013. The selection criteria and other terms and conditions relating to theawards are detailed elsewhere in this write-up.

* Awards for Educational Excellence: These awards are presented to educational and traininginstitutions from around the world in recognition of their educational excellence in various fields.Awards are given to institutions focusing their energies on overall quality of education.

* Awards for Eminent Educationists: These awards recognize eminent educationists,entrepreneurs, and visionary thinkers who have displayed skills in creating and sustainingeducational institutions, departments or programs, pursuing new opportunities, engaging incontinuous innovation, and exhibiting a high degree of accountability for quality education.

* Awards for Research Excellence: These awards recognize excellence in research, scholarship,or creative expression. Awards are given to individuals deserving of special recognition by reasonof their outstanding contributions to knowledge in any of various disciplines.

* Awards for Teaching Excellence: These awards recognize faculty with outstanding overall teachingrecord and ability to inspire and change the lives of students. The faculty must have appliedinnovative teaching methods.

* Awards for Education Technology: The awards recognize excellence in technology use, adaptation,and development by faculty, staff, and administrators to enhance the teaching, learning, andworking environment in educational institutions.

* Awards for Distinguished Alumni: These awards recognize the alumni who have made significantcontributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored thelegacy of excellence at their alma-mater.

* Awards for Academic Excellence: These awards recognize Indian students with outstandingacademic track records at any level including senior secondary (intermediate, pre-university,CBSE, ISC, IB, etc.), vocational education, undergraduate, post-graduate, and doctoral levels.

Indo-Global Education Summit 2013Indian educational system has been undergoing a paradigm shiftin the recent past. India has the world’s second largest post-secondary student population of around 20 million. India has over611 universities and university-level institutions and 31,400colleges, and yet the gross enrollment ratio (GER) is low with only20 per hundred accessing higher education. India is far behindthe developed countries’ average of 45 per hundred. TheGovernment of India has set a GER target of 30 per cent by 2020and for that to be achieved, the number of universities and collegeswill have to be increased many fold, while enhancing the quality ofexisting institutions..

A major challenge is educational excellence. India has islands ofexcellence but the overall education standards are poor. The reportthat 60 to 70 percent of engineering graduates churned out arenot employable, speaks about the quality of higher education inIndia. None of Indian universities are in the list of top rankeduniversities in the world. All this needs to change.

The Indus Foundation offers an efficient and cost-effective meansof interaction between Indian institutions and foreign universitiesthrough the specially designed Indo-Global Education Summit .Activities during the Summit include panel discussions and one-on-one interactions between Indian institutions and foreignuniversities for academic collaborations. The Summit is designedto be a fast-paced program, providing Indian institutions withvaluable exposure to a large number of reputable foreignuniversities from around the world. ACADEMIC COLLABORATIONS – SESSIONSSummit will have sessions on collaborative research programs,joint / dual degree programs, twinning & transfer programs,distance education & vocational education programs, faculty &student exchange programs, study abroad in India programs,and other academic partnerships.

The sessions will cover the fields of Engineering & AppliedSciences, Information Technology, Business & Management,Clinical & Health Sciences, Life Sciences & Biomedicine,Agricultural Sciences & Environment, Education & Technology,Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences. The sessions involvepanel discussions by selected foreign universities and Indianinstitutions. Sponsors will make brief presentations at the end ofpanel discussions. There will be open-house discussions at theend of the sessions.

The academic collaboration sessions of the Summit are meantfor representatives of foreign universities, foreign educationalorganizations, diplomatic officials, Indian institutions, Indiancorporations and organizations. Students will not be present atthese sessions.

Awards for Educational ExcellenceEvery year, the Indus Foundation identifies and recognizes theachievements of some of the finest universities, colleges andinstitutions by presenting them with Awards for EducationalExcellence.

Initiated in 2010, the Indus Foundation’s awards identify andpromote innovation and educational excellence. The awards arenot meant to be rankings of educational institutions. The awardsare in recognition of educational excellence in specific fields ofacademe. Institutions catering to higher education will beconsidered for this purpose. Educational and training institutions

/ organizations are invited to send their nominations forconsideration of the award for educational excellence.

The nominations should give details of the institution and thespecific reasons as to why it should be chosen for the award in aspecific field of academic activity. The selection of awardees willbe made by the experts of the Indus Foundation and their decisionwill be final. The awards will be presented during the inauguralfunction of the Summit 2013. Media will cover the event and givewide publicity.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The basic principle underlying the award is that the awardeesmust have made a transformative impact in the field of highereducation. Higher education is experiencing transformation on aglobal scale, with the emergence of innovations that are changinghow education is both administered and absorbed. Thenominations must show that transformation in education is takingplace in their institutions. The awards are based on criteria thatinclude but are not limited to infrastructure, faculty, placements,strength of students, annual growth, students & alumni feedback,feedback from the industry, etc. Nominations must also show thattheir educational activities have delivered on the following criteria:

1. Educational Transformation: the overall extent to which theeducational activity has transformed an aspect of educationthat has also had societal impact;

2. Sustainable investment: the extent to which the educational

activity is funded in a sustainable way to ensure its continuingviability;

3. Innovation: the extent to which the educational activity isinnovative in design and/or practice, thereby transformingtraditional means of educational delivery;

4. Inclusion and Diversity: the extent to which the activity includesa diversity of beneficiaries and has enhanced equality ofaccess to education.

Awards for Eminent EducationistsEducation is the engine that fuels personal development, andsocietal and economic progress. Educational entrepreneurshipresults in increased innovation and sustained economic growth.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of the awards is to promote educationalentrepreneurship as one of the key drivers of sustained socialdevelopment and economic progress. It aims at encouragingcreation of sustainable, scalable and relevant education systems.The awards are meant for inspiring the next wave of educationalleaders and innovators who will not only create jobs and value forsociety, but also empower others to create a better future.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Awards will be given to eminent educationists, entrepreneurs,and visionary thinkers who have set up one or more educationalinstitutions, departments, or programs in any part of the World.Such institutions, departments, or programs must have made aqualitative impact on the student community. The awards recognizethe outstanding contribution made at any post-secondary level.

The awards will be given to those who have displayed skills increating and sustaining educational institutions, pursuing newopportunities, engaging in continuous innovation, and exhibitinga high degree of accountability for quality education.

Awards for Teaching ExcellenceThe purpose of the Awards for Teaching Excellence is to recognizeexcellence in teaching in senior secondary and higher education.It is envisioned that the awards for teaching excellence wouldbring much-needed attention to—and recognition of—bestteaching practices at this time of great developments in the fieldof senior secondary and higher education.

ELIGIBILITY

Nominees should have put in a minimum of 5 years of service insenior secondary or higher education. They must be engaged in

active teaching work on the date of recommendation. Heads ofsenior secondary institutions and their faculty are also eligible toapply.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Nominees must have an outstanding overall teaching record andbe able to demonstrate inspiring and life-changing effects onstudents. In addition, each nominee must show exemplaryexperience in one or more of these practices:

• Applying innovative teaching methods

• Combining theory and practice, with relevance and scholarlyexcellence

• Using research elements to achieve excellence in teaching

• Applying problem-based/problem-oriented teaching

• Achievements in encouragement of critical thinking

• Use of teaching aids and instructional technology

• Research contributions, publications, books, etc.

• Professional recognitions, awards, etc.

• Involvement in consultancy and other co-curricular activities

Academic CollaborationsAcademic collaborations are possible between foreignuniversities and Indian institutions in several fields. Major fieldscovered would be Engineering & Applied Sciences, InformationTechnology, Business & Management, Clinical & Health Sciences,Life Sciences & Biomedicine, Agricultural Sciences, PhysicalSciences, Environment & Natural Resources, Education &Teacher Training, Arts & Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Research CollaborationsInternational research collaboration has always helped scientiststo keep abreast of international science and to share expertiseand resources. Today, one-fifth of the world’s scientific papers areco-authored internationally — a result of increasingly easycommunication and cross-border travel. Research collaborationsupports research, training and knowledge transfer in everythingfrom architecture to zoology, apart from supporting world-classresearch facilities.

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) is thepremier industrial research and development organization in India.CSIR, for example, can play an important role in promotinginternational research collaboration. In a similar manner, thereare a good number of universities, colleges and centres in Indiathat have research programs. These facts indicate opportunitiesfor capacity building for research in India. Research collaborationbetween Indian institutions and foreign universities will be a “win,win” for all.

Joint / Dual Degree ProgramsThe on-campus programs to be offered in India by foreignuniversities in collaboration with Indian institutions would beGraduate and Post-Graduate degree programs. The duration ofGraduate degree programs would be three to four years whilePost-Graduate degree programs would be two years. Studentswill receive degrees of the foreign universities after successfulcompletion of the programs in India. Foreign universities and Indianinstitutions will administer the degree programs jointly.

Joint / Dual Degree Programs: Collaborative programs are alsosometimes known as Joint Degree programs or Dual Degreeprograms in India. In these programs, Indian institutions willcontinue to offer their regular Graduate and Post-Graduateprograms as per the Indian curricula and give Indian degrees anddiplomas after successful completion. Simultaneously, Indianinstitutions will supplement their existing curricula with theadditional curricula of foreign universities. Students whosuccessfully complete the existing curricula and the additionalcurricula will be given degrees by the foreign universities.

AICTE: Collaborative degree programs which are technical innature, namely, Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science,Business, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Pharmacy,etc., require the approval of statutory bodies such as the All IndiaCouncil of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.

Certificate ProgramsCertificate programs include corporate training programs, executivedevelopment programs, and management developmentprograms. Graduate and Post-Graduate certificate programs aresought in virtually every discipline, including in business, education,health sciences, information technology, humanities, and the arts.Certificate programs are of interest because of their short duration.Students completing the certificate programs offered through Indianinstitutions will be given certificates by foreign universities.

CORPORATE EDUCATION: Foreign universities can developcustom educational programs which would be primarily deliveredby Indian instructors who are experts in their fields. Foreignuniversities’ reputation as valuable collaborators and resources,and the breadth of their programs could enable them to facilitatethe growth of leading corporations, public agencies, and non-profit organizations in India.

Twinning / Transfer ProgramsTwinning / Transfer programs allow Indian institutions to offerGraduate and Post-Graduate programs which will have theirregular curricula. The existing curricula may be supplemented byadditional curricula of the foreign universities if desired by Indianinstitutions. Through Twinning / Transfer programs, Indianstudents will be able to earn several credits during the course oftheir normal study in Indian institutions. Students will have theopportunity either to complete their studies in India or to transfertheir credits to the foreign universities at any time after completingat least one year of their studies in Indian institutions. Studentswho opt for transfer can then finish their Degree programs bycompleting the remainder of credits in-residence at the foreignuniversities.

Twinning / Transfer programs are “win-win” situations for allconcerned parties. Indian institutions are strengthened by accessto the latest in foreign curricular developments. Foreign-boundIndian students save substantial cost of studying abroad.

Students enrolling in the Graduate and Post-Graduate programsof the foreign universities will be given Degrees by the foreignuniversities after successful completion of study. Students whodo not plan to go to the foreign universities and students whohave been unable to get foreign visas will complete their programof study in India, and would be awarded Indian Degrees by theIndian institutions concerned.

Distance Education ProgramsThe phenomenal growth of distance education is explained bythe fact that over 90% of college students access the Internet, with50% accessing the Web daily. Also, Indian companies andorganizations are spending huge amounts on in-house trainingand education programs through distance and blended mode.

BLENDED LEARNING

Blended Learning is the process of incorporating many differentlearning styles that can be accomplished through the use of‘blended’ virtual and physical resources. Some of the benefitsare:

• Blended learning won’t interfere with student’s current job• Student will cut down on commuting time and costs – save

money on petrol and parking.• Student can meet and connect with classmates online and in

Vocational Education ProgramsVocational education in India aims to develop skilled manpowerthrough diversified courses to meet the requirements of organizedand unorganized sectors and to instill self-employment skills inpeople through a large number of self employment orientedcourses. It is expected that there will be an acute shortage ofskilled manpower in the world by 2022. Indian manpower will behandy by then. Government of India has already announced skilldevelopment for 500 million Indians by 2022.

In the USA and some other countries, community colleges(technical colleges) are primarily two-year institutions of highereducation. After graduating from a community college, somestudents transfer to a university or liberal arts college for two yearsto complete a bachelor’s degree, while others enter the workforce.Community colleges serve the needs of society through trainingskilled workers and also provide opportunity to students continuetheir education in professional colleges. Indian institutions havea wide range of opportunities for collaborating with foreigncommunity colleges and technical colleges for skills development.

Faculty Exchange ProgramsFaculty exchange programs would provide participants with theopportunity to teach or conduct research for one semester or anacademic year at a foreign university. Faculty members wouldbenefit from exposure to a culturally varied and diverse facultymake-up, with an opportunity to exchange ideas and observe avariety of styles. Faculty exchange program is one way to takeadvantage of the benefits of diverse faculty.

In order to create diverse faculty, foreign universities and Indianinstitutions can develop plans for faculty exchange programs. Thebenefit will be immediate, and students will have the opportunityto learn concepts and ideas presented in an entirely new anddifferent manner. The faculty exchange programs present a uniqueopportunity for interaction between foreign universities and In-dian institutions.

Student Exchange ProgramsIn student exchange programs between Indian institutions andforeign universities, students choose to study abroad and viceversa in collaborating institutions. An exchange student could livewith a host family or in a designated place including hostel, af-fordable apartment / house or student lodge. The cost for eachprogram differs according to countries and institutions. The par-ticipants could either receive scholarship / loan, or be self-funded.

Programs vary depending upon program length, country, contentand other factors. Students going on university exchange couldpay tuition fees on home campus. Students going on exchangeprogram could choose either to live on campus or off campus.

Partnership ProgramsAcademic Partnership programs can be established for thepurpose of improving the academic quality of Indian seniorsecondary schools, junior colleges, and degree colleges.Partnership programs help to improve the preparation of studentsfor entry into foreign universities.

Partnerships between Indian institutions and the foreignuniversities may be entered into, so that Indian students whocomplete 12th standard could be admitted as freshmen inGraduate programs of foreign universities. Similar partnershipsmay be entered into so that Indian Graduate students may beadmitted to Post-Graduate programs in foreign universities directly.

Partnership programs provide a measure of certainty to students inIndian institutions that they will be accepted in good foreign universities.Students will be spared the stress of having to prepare for the highlycompetitive entrance examinations in India with the knowledge thattheir admission in foreign universities is almost assured.

Study Abroad in India ProgramsStudy abroad in India programs will foster intercultural developmentamong students, who will have the understanding and skills to effectively,humanely, and positively navigate across different cultures.

Studying abroad in India for a semester or year will give studentsa fresh perspective on themselves, India, and the world. It willexpose them to diverse people and viewpoints, and they will getto experience a different way of life apart from their own in theircountry. They will be immersed in the language, culture, andpeople of the host country and will get to experience life asresidents, not as mere tourists. While studying in India, they willalso earn credit towards their current degree.

Students will pay the regular tuition and fees, room and boardexpenses, to their parent institution. Foreign universities will payan agreed amount to Indian institutions for providing tuition, roomand board. International travel costs will be borne by the students.

Summits 2012, 2011, 2010 & 2009The Indus Foundation has been privileged to organize EducationSummits in 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 in India. The objective ofthe Summits was to explore opportunities for academiccollaborations between Indian institutions and foreign universities.The Summits also guided Indian students about opportunities forhigher education in foreign universities. By all accounts, theSummits were considered highly successful. The Summits wereattended by university chancellors, provosts, deans, faculty, andenrollment / recruitment officers of foreign universities from aroundthe World. Several hundred Indian institutions and organizationsinterested in academic collaborations participated in the Summits.Several thousand Indian students interested in studying abroadattended the Summits.

Mr. S.B.Anumolu, PresidentMr. S.B.Anumolu, 67, is the President of the IndusFoundation, New Jersey, which was founded in1995. Mr. Anumolu obtained his Master’s degreefrom the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore(IIM-B). Mr. Anumolu joined the Indian Police Service(IPS) in 1969 and was trained at Mussorie and Mt.Abu in India. He worked for 18 years in varioussenior level positions including that of Deputy

Inspector General of Police before leaving Government service. He receivedletters of commendation from the Government for the good work done. Heworked as Managing Director of an industry for six years and later asManaging Director of a management consulting company for six yearsand led several business delegations to the USA, Canada, Japan, theUAE, and other Gulf countries.
