Consul General called on Dr. Beate Merk, Bavarian Minister of European Affairs & Regional Relations and discussed issues of mutual cooperation. He also met Mr. Erwin Huber, Chairman of the Economic Committee of Bavarian Parliament and briefed him and members of the Committee about the economic opportunities in India. Mr. Huber paid an official visit to India in April 2017. In April 2017, Consul General actively engaged with various commercial establishments. He visited Heidenheim, which is the economic centre of East Wuerttemberg and attended meeting of the German-Indian Round Table (GIRT). He also visited Carl Edelmann e.V., a leading provider of innovative and high- quality packaging material. At Voith, he visited the Vocational Training Institute and discussed the possibility of emulating in India the best practices on vocational training being adopted at Voith. Consul General also met Dr. Yorck Otto, President of the Association of Medium-Sized Companies (UMU) and discussed ways to enhance India’s engagement with German mittelstand. Thank you for giving an overwhelming appreciation to our first newsletter “Indien in Süddeutschland”. I am glad to present to you the next edition highlighting activities of the Consulate General of India, Munich. This newsletter also gives a glimpse of developments in India, its culture and cuisine. Whenever necessary, we’ll also provide useful information to Indian diaspora concerning consular matters. I am sure, you will find this edition informative.

Do you know?

India is world’s 7th largest economy in terms of nominal GDP (US$ 2.45 trillion) and 3rd largest in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (US$ 9.49 trillion). India’s GDP growth rate is 7.6% and has an impressive foreign exchange reserves of US$ 373 billion India is one of the G-20 major economies; a member of BRICS ; among top 20 global traders according to the WTO; 19th largest merchandise and 6th largest services exporter in the world.

Members of the Indian industry participated at the European Coating Show at Messe Nuernberg. Consul General took that opportunity to visit the Messe and interacted with Indian exhibitors.  

Consulate also participated at the event “E-Commerce – Future Market India’ organised by the Chamber of Commerce (IHK) of Munich and Oberbayern and presented an overview on opportunities in e-commerce sector in India and key policy announcements by the Indian Government. There has been close cooperation in education sector between India and Germany. Consul General called on Presidents of Rosenheim University and Esslingen University and emphasised on the need for joint research and university-to-university collaboration. He also interacted with Indian students during these visits. School level students’ Exchange Program between our two countries has been progressing very well. Consul General visited Hellenstein Gymnasium Heidenheim and met students who participated at the exchange program. He also interacted with students of schools from Mysore and Koengisbrunn.

* * * Rangoli, is an ancient folk art in which patterns are created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards using materials such as colored rice, dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. Rangoli is made during festivals and other auspicious occasions.

India's clothing styles have continuously evolved over the course of the country's history. The 11th century BC, Rig Veda mentions coloured and embroidered garments.

Silk cloth was one of the major exports of ancient India. In 5th century BC, Greek historian Herodotus describes richness of quality of Indian cotton clothes.

Clothing in India is influenced by local culture, geography, climate and rural/urban settings.

Celebration of Ambedkar Jayanti in Munich

Consulate General of India celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti at Museum Fuenf Kontinente and remembered Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s contribution to the Indian society. On this occasion, a discussion was arranged on “Ambedkar and Empowerment of the Dalits – From Mahad Satyagraha Till Today”.

Art& Culture

Telugu community in Munich celebrated Ugadi (New Year’s Day in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana) and presented performances showcasing the rich cultural diversity of India.

 

D4Dance Germany had its first performance in 2013 in Nueremberg and since then there is no looking back. It has staged several theme based, Bollywood contemporary and Indian folk dance performances all over Germany and Europe. D4Dance is headed by young, energetic, Pavan Prasad, who has supported the Consulate in its cultural outreach endeavors.

“Never  Again”!  Consul  General  attended  the  ceremonies  commemorating  72nd  anniversary  of  liberation  of  the  Concentration  Camp  at  Dachau,  a  symbol  of  Nazi  atrocities  and  the  Holocaust.

Indian drama and theatre has a long history alongside its music and dance. Kalidasa‘s Shakuntala and Meghadoota are some of the older drama. One of the oldest surviving theatre traditions of the world is the 2,000-year old Kutiyattam of Kerala.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the nodal agency of India to do space research.

India is amongst the top five nations in the field of space exploration. It has successfully undertaken missions to Mars and Moon

Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) has repeatedly proved its reliability with 37 successful launches. In Feb. 2017, it launched 104 satellites simultaneously.

 

India in Spotlight

§ India is poised to overtake Japan to become the world’s second-largest

steelmaker. Output will rise from 103 million tons this year to 110 million in 2018, and 118 million by 2019. Steel-consumption growth is expected to be driven by substantial infrastructure investment, growth in residential construction and shipbuilding, defense, automobile and manufacturing sectors.

§ The first three female flying officers, Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh, commissioned to fly fighter aircrafts in the Indian Air Force have now entered their second phase of training where they are learning air-to-air and air-to-ground combat at the Kalaikunda airbase in West Bengal. They were commissioned last year after they had successfully completed their initial basic training. Their successful induction will pave the way to induct women as fighter pilots.

§ India is set to be the world’s third-largest solar power market this year.

According to EnergyTrend, the global solar PV demand is expected to remain stable at 74 GW this year while India is expected to see sustained growth. India is expected to contribute 14% to the global solar PV demand as it continues to push for a very ambitious installed capacity target of 100 GW by 2022.

Indian Cuisine

Aviyal is a traditional vegetarian dish from the South Indian State of Kerala. It is a thick mixture of vegetables, curd, coconut and seasoned with coconut oil and curry leaves. Method: Cut all the vegetables lengthwise into equal small pieces. Add these vegetables, salt, 1 glass water, turmeric powder and cook it in a pan for 15 minutes. Sliced green chilly can be added if spicy aviyal is preferred. In another vessel, mix together coconut, curry leaves, green chillies

and divide this mixture into two halves. Grind together the first half into a fine paste and add this paste, along with the other half to the cooked vegetables. Add curd and warm it for 2 minutes. Add coconut oil and curry leaves, keep stirring for another 2 minutes and serve it with rice.

Attention : Indian Students in Germany

Indian Students in Germany (ISG) www.indianstudentsgermany.org, an initiative of the Embassy of India, Berlin was started in 2015 to support and assist Indian students in Germany. ISG has been rendering immense help to the students by providing information on application procedure, visa issues, accommodation problems etc.; connecting prospective students with those already enrolled in German universities and their respective Indian student associations; disseminating information on internships, master thesis projects and job offers; organizing seminars and webinars for interactive sessions. Indian students in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg are advised to register themselves at ISG website.
