PRESIDENT and CEOLETTER from the

Dear friends and colleagues,

I am so proud of everything we accomplished in 2017 – both at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center and in communities statewide. We reached 1.4 million people through visitation, programs, outreach and services. It was a great year, as you’ll see in this report.

Everything we do is based on our mission as Indiana’s Storyteller and our commitment to collecting, preserving, interpreting and sharing our state’s history. We serve as an important resource for educators, students and researchers – professional and personal. We strive to make Indiana’s history relevant to the rest of the country’s history and to the world today. Connecting people to the past is our most important purpose, and we are able to do it in interesting ways thanks to your support and the support of our Board of Trustees and community advisors.

Our particularly powerful You Are There about Italian POWs in Camp Atterbury has truly touched visitors to the History Center. You Are There: Eli Lilly at the Beginning brought thousands of people into Col. Lilly’s original lab. Our latest You Are There presents the Battle of Gettysburg in an innovative and captivating style.

Our permanent Indiana Experience offerings of Destination Indiana, the W. Brooks and Wanda Y. Fortune History Lab and the Cole Porter Room continue to delight. This past year, we’ve filled the Rosemary McKee Lanham Gallery with everything from motorcycles to war letters to oral histories.

We launched History on Wheels – the ultimate traveling exhibit housed in a semi trailer. Its onboard exhibit, Auto Indiana, was enjoyed by Hoosiers at festivals, fairs and other locations all summer long.

I hope you enjoy this look back at 2017. It was certainly a year to remember for many reasons.

We are looking forward to a wonderful 2018 as we focus our fundraising efforts on a campaign to “burn the mortgage” on the History Center and increase the value of our endowment. And, as always, the best is yet to come.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best regards,

John A. Herbst President and CEO

“The Indiana Historical Society is one of the nation’s finest historical organizations. We don’t brag and boast in Indiana, I know, but this is a true fact. One of the luckiest things in my life was my introduction to this institution in 1969, and I’ve continued to work in its vast collections over the decades. It is a phenomenal institution – one of the great jewels of the Hoosier crown.”– Dr. James Madison, Indiana University

Our membership is more than 5,000 units strong, with a healthy retention rate and more upgrades than ever before.

“I sincerely appreciate your support of the cultural and heritage organizations that work tirelessly to research, preserve and present educational programs and exhibits documenting our Indiana history.”– Ophelia Wellington, Freetown Village

“This museum is a real jewel in

Indy’s downtown.”– Bernie V., TripAdvisor

“The start of your journey is Destination Indiana, which is kind of like an Indiana history only internet. There’s a big screen with a handful of short movies on Indiana history and afterward a number of viewing booths. There’s a nice touchscreen system where you can browse Indiana history. I spent a lot of time here and could have spent a lot more time.”– Chris Y., Yelp

“This is not a museum. It is the historical archives of the state of Indiana, but has a number of very cool exhibits. It is one of my favorite places to visit and is more adult-focused. If you plan to do any research on Indiana history, this is the only place to go. The reason I am writing the review, is because we go there frequently for events. A good place to spend some time.”– Profguy, TripAdvisor
