OURIMBAH [From Our Correspondent] The presentation and welcome extended to Private Jack Yates proved a great success in all respects, most residents agreeing that the attendance was a record for the local Hall in spite of unpromising weather. Messrs Burns and Higgins spoke on behalf of the Soldiers’ Reception Committee. Both empha-sised the fact that the Yates family was most ac-tively patriotic and public spirited in Ourimbah. Mrs. Yates, whose both eligible sons have enlisted (one paying the extreme penalty, the other wounded and returned home) deserving special praise for patriotic work she does. The speakers made allusion also tp Private Yates’s character and to what a fine fellow he has always been. Reference was made to Pte Tom Yates, one of the heroes of Gallipoli, who will never return. Mr. F R Archbold, speaking before making the presentation, said he never knew a finer man or one who bore his misfortune more cheerfully than Jack, whom he knew personally. The cheering which followed the presentations proved Pte Yates’ great popularity. In replying, Private Yates thanked the citizens of Ourimbah for their splendid reception, and expressed his desire to return to the front. With characteristic modesty, he refused to take any credit for doing his bit.

Gosford Times 4th January 1917 Mr. Richard Yates, of Ourimbah, sent two sons to war. One of them, Thomas, was killed, and the other, Jack, was wounded by shrapnel in back and hip on 7

th November, just twelve months after enlisting, and

at time of writing was in hospital in France.
