TRAVEL’S NOBLE PURPOSEWhen my family founded Abercrombie & Kent in East Africa in the early 1960s, we did so in the belief that great travel experiences are not only life-enhancing, they can also be life-changing. In the years since, I’ve seen that belief confirmed before my own eyes many times.

Truly great travel allows us to see the world through a new lens, in a new light. With the right perspective, an open heart and an expert guide, travel helps us come to a better understanding of the world and our place in it. Travel not only has the power to make the traveller a better person, it can also literally make the world a better place.

This belief, combined with a desire to share the company’s enduring success, and the aim of leaving every place we explore even better than we found it, led us to establish Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP). Now a registered charity in Australia, the US and the UK, with projects in dozens of countries across the world, AKP is making a real difference in the lives of countless individuals, communities and natural environments.

For many A&K travellers, a visit to an AKP project – a local school, a nature conservancy, a micro-financed social enterprise – will be one of the highlights of an A&K journey. For many more, an A&K journey will, in its entirety, be an experience even greater than the sum of its many memorable parts. It will be a shared adventure that lights a fire, and likely fuels a desire to explore more, see more, learn more, help more.

The right kind of travel asks us the great questions, and encourages us to keep asking more ourselves. A lifetime of travel has only served to heighten my own curiosity, my desire to experience more of the world, and to keep learning more from the inspiring people and the extraordinary places, cultures and creatures that together make travel so meaningful.

In one of his last great poems, T.S. Eliot wrote “We shall never cease from exploration.” I believe that idea speaks to humankind generally. It certainly speaks to me and to the spirit of adventure I see running through A&K and all of our people, and I see it alight in everyone who travels with us.

I hope you are inspired by the travel ideas in these pages to explore more of the world with A&K, and I hope our paths cross sometime soon, somewhere out there in our wide and wonderful world. Keep exploring!

DEDICATED EXPERTISE

Our team of Travel Specialists regards travel not as an occasional diversion, but as a calling that stimulates the mind and nourishes the spirit. Exceptionally well-travelled individuals, they are on call for recommendations, guidance and first hand feedback. Staying in constant touch with A&K’s partners and network of offices throughout the world means the most up-to-date information is at their fingertips. All this translates to the best experience for you.

SEAMLESS PRIVATE JOURNEYS

We extensively research every destination to which we travel. Our itineraries are subjected to close scrutiny, and every element of a journey is carefully considered in terms of logistics and guest enjoyment. The result is the selection of itineraries like those you see in this brochure, each one tried and tested, presenting the destination in the best possible way in seamless style and comfort. These journeys are all designed to give you an incomparable travel experience, and each is operated on a private basis for you and your travelling companion.

BESPOKE TRAVEL SERVICE

A&K also offers a bespoke travel service, and any of the destinations and itineraries included here can be adapted, amended or extended to meet your individual interests and needs. Our Travel Specialists deliver one-on-one consultations, taking the time to understand the destinations, experiences and ingredients that make up your ideal holiday, and then recommending or developing an itinerary to make your dream a reality.

EXPERT GUIDES

It is often said that a guide has the ability to make or break a special journey. We concur. A&K’s guides are the best in the business and deliver superlative experiences in every destination. All are blessed with extensive knowledge and the ability to bring local attractions to life. Multilingual and well-travelled, each possesses insight into the diverse attractions and cultural interactions present throughout the region. Irrespective of the destination, our guides will enlighten you in every locale with insider information that adds depth to your journey.

HOSTED JOURNEYS

A&K also offers an exclusive portfolio of hosted small group journeys to a variety of destinations around the world. These journeys are expert-led shared adventures to more off-the-beaten track destinations. Each has been creatively designed for more intrepid, more inquisitive Australian travellers, with educational elements and local encounters that broaden the mind and result in unforgettable experiences in each destination.

Intimate group sizes, with no more than 18 guests on any tour and guaranteed departures (and a guaranteed host) from the first two guests booked, ensure the right balance of guided activity and breathing room, the time and space for some self-discovery in a destination, and exclusive access to many attractions only available to a small group. On selected journeys, expert local hosts are joined by special guest hosts, entertaining and charismatic travelling companions with strong connections to the destination or expertise relevant to the focus of the journey. See page 58 for journeys in this region.

THE A&K DIFFERENCEWhen you travel with A&K, you can expect to travel in seamless style and comfort, where we take care of every detail, accommodate every request, prepare for every eventuality, even in the most remote and rugged locations. You’ll stay in wonderful places, eat the best local cuisine, enjoy special performances and privileges – the very definition of luxury and service.

You’ll do it all with the security and support of A&K experts on the ground and on call everywhere you go. You should expect these things, you will enjoy these things, but in the end, they won’t be the reason you travel with A&K.

For us, travel has a noble purpose, and it is both a higher calling and a primitive urge. The Germans have a word for it, as they do for most things, ‘Sehnsucht’. This is more than just nostalgia for times and travels past, as it is sometimes translated; it is a wistful longing, a yearning in the heart, for travel past and travel still to come. We feel it always, as many travellers do. Addressed or unaddressed, it soon gives rise to an even stronger feeling, and another German word – ‘Fernweh’ – ‘farsickness’ the mirror-reverse of homesickness, an urge to travel even stronger than wanderlust.

This spirit and these urges – travel’s true and noble purpose – are built into every A&K journey. They are why we do what we do; they are why people, friends and families, travel together and travel with us, again and again, over a lifetime and across generations.

THE LEADER IN LUXURY TRAVEL

For over half a century, Abercrombie & Kent has been a pioneer in the world of luxury travel, redefining the notion of what is possible on holiday and delivering travel experiences that change the way travellers see the world. We’ve made it our business to specialise in destinations and itineraries that are extraordinary, creating exquisite adventures specially tailored to the needs of the most discerning travellers.

With experience comes excellence and reliability and with A&K this translates to peace of mind and security. Our guests are always our priority. You will be looked after from beginning to end and beyond. And if unexpected events occur, you can rely on us to go the extra mile to ensure your wellbeing.

A GLOBAL NETWORK

Unlike other travel companies who rely solely on third parties to create their programmes and support their travellers on the ground, A&K itineraries are backed by over 2,200 handpicked staff in our 52 offices worldwide. Through this global network of experts, we have the knowledge and resources to create memorable journeys and take care of every detail before, during and after your journey.

CELEBRATE FAMILY AND FRIENDSAt A&K, we’re all about creating lasting memories for you, your family and your friends, spending time away together in the world’s most special places. Whether you’re gathering to celebrate a special milestone – a big birthday, anniversary, honeymoon or wedding – or simply a family get-together, we recognise that shared experiences are the most memorable, and we know how to tailor the journey to suit every dynamic.

Our Travel Specialists can create magical moments for every generation travelling. Imagine watching your children or your parents as a herd of elephants emerges from the African bush; the wonder on a child’s face at their first iceberg on an Antarctic expedition; the fun of a hands-on pizza-making session in Rome; or the friendly sibling rivalry on a mountain bike excursion in Chile.

A&K FAMILY ADVENTURES

India is an intriguing destination for all ages combining rich cultural experiences with a vibrant cuisine and outdoor adventure ‘Jungle Book’ style. Some of our favourite family activities include:

• A friendly introduction to Indian cuisine at a family cooking class in the home of a Delhi resident. All willing participants are encouraged to roll up their sleeves for some hands-on roti making, spice blending and curry creation, tasting the fruits of their labour over a specially hosted family lunch.

• The opportunity to see tiger in the wild on an invigorating safari through the national parks of Central India. From an open-sided 4WD vehicle, all eyes are peeled for the slightest movement through the tall grass or deep in the shadows of the teak forest. It’s an experience that stays forever.

• Taking to the skies above Sigiriya in Sri Lanka in a hot air balloon to gaze over the incredible Rock Temple and the vast landscape beyond. An early start brings memorable rewards as you drift in the morning light marvelling at the skills of the 3rd century labourers who constructed this extraordinary monument.

• Biking through the countryside around Hoi An, past rice fields, along canals and down waterways watching life go by. See local artisans at work and visit local farms and market gardens along the way with a chance to pick the produce and prepare lunch.

• Volunteering at the Dujiangyan Panda Base near Chengdu where important research is being done on disease prevention and the rehabilitation of these extraordinary and endangered creatures.

A&K MILESTONE CELEBRATIONS

One of the best ways to mark a special occasion is to take up residence in your own fully-staffed villa or aboard your own luxury vessel. You decide who the guests are, and you set the daily timetable. A&K has access to some extraordinary seaside properties in Sri Lanka and Thailand, converted palaces in India, a houseboat on the Kerala backwaters or a junk on Halong Bay – all perfect venues for a milestone celebration or a multi-generation family adventure.

Some other ways to mark the occasion include a floating celebration in Udaipur on the 150-year-old royal Gangaur boat where an exclusive dinner on the waters of Lake Pichola is certain to wow. Or, receive your own private blessing from a Buddhist monk at the breathtaking Tiger’s Nest monastery in Bhutan. Or, get a bird’s eye view of the world’s highest peak on an Everest scenic flight. Your choice.

A deep-rooted consideration for the natural world infuses each and every Abercrombie & Kent journey.

A&K believes passionately that travel should both respect the natural environment and benefit the indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. For over 30 years, A&K has been intimately involved in the support of these communities, their environments and their ecosystems.

Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), guided by Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, facilitates our commitment to socially and ecologically responsible travel worldwide, as well as helping our guests to become actively involved in these efforts. Every Abercrombie & Kent office plays an important hands-on role in its community, proudly sponsoring projects directly benefiting the local people and environment.

In Sri Lanka, Project Leopard aims to protect the leopard population of Yala National Park by reducing human-leopard conflict in bordering communities. To prevent the local cattle farmers from killing leopards to protect their livestock, AKP contributes steel enclosures for sheltering cattle at night.

Alongside A&K India, AKP supports the Hansraj Children’s Home in Udaipur, a residential school for orphaned and underprivileged girls from neighbouring tribal lands. The home provides free education, books, accommodation, meals and clothes.

In Cambodia’s Siem Reap area, A&K Philanthropy works with Sam’s Brothers Clean Water Project constructing simple wells which provide families and local communities in rural Cambodia with access to clean, bacteria-free water.

AKP also helps improve the quality of life for locals in the small Myanmar village of Sin Kyun where a library and house for an English teacher has been provided.

Tourism has the potential to enrich yet also threaten the fabric and spirit of fragile destinations. Travellers have the opportunity to visit and be personally involved in these projects.

Abercrombie & Kent makes a donation to AKP on behalf of every guest travelling.

Programmes marked with a represent opportunities for travellers to be personally involved in these projects.

The country’s second largest game park, its habitats range from forest to scrub, with abundant wildlife – including the highest concentration of leopard in the world. Morning and evening game drives in a 4WD with a seasoned park ranger offer your best chance of spotting wildlife and your accommodation is a custom-built, eco-conscious tent with Kulu Safaris.

Dazzling white sand beaches with startling blue water and a balmy tropical climate are the biggest lure of this Indian Ocean island paradise. Dive into its warm waters and you’ll see an underwater world, alive with colourful tropical fish. Luxurious hideaways abound with overwater, as well as beach front, villas a speciality. Aside from relaxing by a private plunge pool or afloat in the turquoise waters, there’s plenty to keep travellers active from diving and fishing to surfing, snorkelling and island picnics.

WHEN TO GO

Weather patterns throughout Asia are varied. In the tropics of southeast Asia there is little seasonal temperature variation (average daily highs in the 30’s) with monsoon season from May to November. A vast country like China has enormous variations but, in general, spring (April – May) and autumn (Sept – Oct) are best. Prime time for Japan is between March and November. Plan to travel to Central Asia during spring and autumn (April - May and September to early November) when the days are warm and dry. Temperatures from November to March are cold, while summer can be uncomfortably hot.

EXPLORE MORE OF THE ORIENTWhen travelling to India, Asia and Europe with Cathay Pacific and A&K, why not consider a stopover? Each short break is delivered in customary A&K style with privately guided sightseeing, private transfers and luxury accommodation. Here are our suggestions:

BANGKOK The cultural and commercial Thai capital is high-voltage. It’s a city that never sleeps. Deeply traditional, Bangkok is at the same time thoroughly modern - ancient temples and palaces abut glittering skyscrapers and frenzied freeways. Cross the Chao Phraya River to old Bangkok, which is best explored on foot or by tuk tuk, to visit shrines and churches and taste traditional Thai snacks along the way. Inner-city Bangkok offers another perspective with street art and heritage architecture. The Peninsula Bangkok is our preferred accommodation choice.

To get the best out of the city, explore the ‘wet’ markets, antique shops and galleries of Central, or browse the flashy designer stores of Pacific Place. Stay at one of our favourite hotels, the Island Shangri-La.
