401. Australian ‘Clipsal’ brass key on black bakelite base measuring 116 x 72mm. ‘CLIPSAL’ embossed on front of base under black bakelite knob and ‘Made in Australia’ embossed underneath base. 2 terminals on right hand side of base. Large black bakelite skirt under knob. The holes on the left hand side and one on the right edge are not original and possibly had a mini buzzer wired to the key. Clipsal keys were made by Gerrard Industries, Adelaide, South Australia initially for the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2 and were popular with amateur radio operators after the war. Obtained from Canberra 2011.

402. Australian unknown semi automatic key. All nickel plated. Base 150 x 74mm. Similar layout as the Simplex Auto

except for the triangular pivot bridge. Damper post centre rear. Two identical black bakelite finger/thumb pieces. This appears to be an earlier version of this key. The latter having smaller and plainer terminal screws and triangular thumb piece and round finger piece. (See #421). Obtained from U.S.A. 2011.

403. Australian H. C. Ingram semi automatic key c1930s. All nickel plated. Base 145 x 75mm. Black bakelite finger/thumb pieces. Serial number 154 stamped under base. D. H. Clark C.T.O. Melbourne engraved on bridge. A person named Clark was in the 1942 Telegraphist Training Class, Melbourne in 1942 so this key probably belonged to him.

404. Australian PMG No. 4 Detector. Combined voltmeter and ammeter for portable testing. Development of Detector No. 2. Provided with 5 amp and 25 amp shunts which fit across terminals 2 and 4. Two 10,000 ohm resistance coil multipliers can be screwed singly or in series on the extended threads of terminals 2 and 3. Contained in leather pouch approx 105 x 120 x 65mm stamped PMG 4 with leather strap. Detector measures 90 x 72 x 50mm with 4 terminals and switch on top. (two stamped E and E) and 2 at rear stamped R and R. Small arrow on right. 264 stamped on rear of bridge. Brown ebonite knob and skirt. Stamped underneath R.A.F REF 1969. These were possibly used as early as 1921 and certainly during WW2 so 1969 is a reference number rather than a date. Aluminium cover with glass insert in brass ring and adjusting screw for contacts.

407. U.K. wooden cased Q & I (Quantity and Intensity) meter (used in Australia). 85 x 97 x 52mm. Calibrated 0–70 each side, 3 brass terminals and ring holder on top. Inserts between terminals marked INTY. and QNTY. Back of case slides down to open and secured with small screw. Dial reads ‘TELEGRAPH WORKS. SILVERTOWN LONDON.’ Obtained from U.K. 2011.

210 x 122mm. Large curved decorated permanent magnet holding 4 coils - two coils in each of the visible coil covers resulting in eight wires from the coils routed through eight holes in the wooden base; four to terminals 1 to 4 and four to join other coils. Terminals 5 and 6 are wired for a local circuit. Used in quadruplex and duplex working. Sliding switch mounted at right rear. Similar relay shown in Bunnell catalogue dated 1892. 420. Australian ‘in line’ Pendograph. 4th model. Grey painted (possibly not original - usually nickel plated) metal base 112 x 83mm. O.1178. (this dates the switch prior to 1880). Stamped 2 on base near left

armature and 1 on base near right armature. Stamped 15 under brass base. In its normal position it must place the line in connection with the repeating instrument so that the currents from that line may be ‘repeated’ along the other line and when it is required to transmit to the wire to which it is joined, the switch (controlled by currents sent from the other line) must disconnect its repeating instrument and join up the batteries, maintaining these connections so long as a message is being sent.

424. U.K. dummy key. Wood base measures 100 x 72mm. Brass plate measures 85 x 57mm. All brass fittings and bakelite knob. Plate marked rear left with within what appears to be a conjoined C and T. Stamped KEY DUMMY SIGNALLERS MkII PARKINSON & COWAN L
