From the Editors’ Desk…

READERS,

WOW!! Is this really my 10th issue of Footprints? What a joy and headache it has been. The joy is the finished product .I mentions this, because it almost time for elections and I want to announce that I am running for re-election to the Board of Directors. The joys have far outweighed the headaches and I want to continue making the NOTC the best I can. Keep Running, Mary Stadler

The Presidents Report As I look back over the past 10 months, time has surely flown by. It has been an incredible time for NOTC and our club membership has grown to pre-Katrina levels. Race participation has also increased at most races; the exception of a few which may have been the result of a bad weather day. Our races have grown in part because of the hard working volunteers who help with race day production. The Volunteer Team of NOTC works diligently to make our races some of the best in the country. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of Volunteers; those who give of their time race after race. I am asking all members to consider joining our team by contacting our Volunteer Coordinator and volunteer for one race. I have had members mention a few things that they would like to see provided to NOTC members; one would be a youth training program and another has been more articles in Footprints. For NOTC to be able to offer more services to its members we need your help. To the aspiring writers out there, consider submitting an article to our editor for Footprints. For the certified coaches out there, consider helping start a youth training program or help start a marathon training program. For NOTC to continue to grow we need to think past the races we produce. We need to develop the next generation of runners who see road racing as a fun activity where you can foster and develop lifelong friendships. In addition it develops a healthy lifestyle promoting fitness and a higher quality of life. In June we will have our General Membership Meeting and elections for the 2009/2010 Board of Directors will take place. I plan to be on the ballot and would like the opportunity to continue to serve the club as President for the 2009-2010 term. If you are willing to make a commitment to your NOTC membership, please consider running for the Board of Directors. Information will be posted on the website shortly so you can review the positions and the responsibility of each to see if there is something you would like to help with. As I mentioned earlier, the club needs YOU so please consider volunteering. I know we have many dedicated runners and walkers who want to give back to the sport that brings us together at the starting line, waiting for the gun to go off and the race to begin. See you at the races, Aaron Boudreaux, NOTC President 2008/2009

May 4, 2009

Greetings to everyone! Thanks for being so patient while my schedule bottoms out & things get

shoved onto the back burner. As a self-employed landscaper, springtime usually means an unbelievable amount of work for my one-man

operation. When you throw in a trip to San Francisco, rain water in our home while we were in San Francisco & subsequent home

renovations, tackling & surviving my first half Ironman, a teenager with another head injury (he’s okay but I’m beginning to wonder about

organized sports at school), being on the race committee for the CCC10k and it’s responsibilities, my normal duties as Secretary for NOTC

and on top of that RRCA State Rep functions; well, let’s just say it’s been hectic around the Boudreaux household for a while!

First & foremost, the RRCA Convention in San Francisco was unbelievable. There was so much to see and do it was hard to fit it all in. The

combined efforts of several running groups in the Bay Area resulted in one of the most informative conventions I’ve been to. The focus of

the convention was Bridging the Future and we were treated to seminars & guest speakers all sharing ways for running clubs to improve

their clubs. One noteworthy item is that as an effort to go GREEN, most of the seminar handouts were not printed out on paper. Instead

every convention attendee was given a CD that contains the handouts. So if you are interested, I’ll make an attempt to copy mine or obtain

additional copies through RRCA.

In recent weeks RRCA has begun a Join a Club ad campaign and ads are featured in several national magazines. I encourage your club to

use the ads which are free and available thru RRCA and include them on your club website and any print material you see fit. There are

several size ads available so you decide what would work best for you. http://www.rrca.org/news/index.php?article=2434

In addition RRCA has recently updated their own logo so please make every effort to update this as you include it on your race applications

or websites. http://www.rrca.org/services/branding/

One of the new benefits of your club being a member of RRCA is the Microfinancing Program. This could really help new or small clubs

that would like to purchase items such as clocks or timing systems which would benefit your runners. You can check out the details at

http://www.rrca.org/services/microfinance/

One of the latest RRCA bulletins that have come down the pipeline is to remind clubs that the 2008 tax filing deadline is near.

http://www.rrca.org/news/index.php?article=2435

Also recently announced was the partnership of Crocs and a special offer just for RRCA clubs and their members.

http://www.rrca.org/news/index.php?article=2436

With the recent outbreak of swine flu there are a couple of recommendations from RRCA on how Race Directors can protect their race

volunteers and participants. http://www.rrca.org/news/index.php?article=2437

Our next State Championship Race will be the Four on the 4th hosted by the 15th Street Flyers in Covington. This July 4th race continues to

get bigger and better each year and I wouldn’t be surprised if it reached a sellout crowd this year. If you are looking for a fun, family

atmosphere event on July 4th, I encourage you to register as soon as the race forms are made available. http://www.15thstreetflyers.org/

Speaking of State Championships, at the convention our outgoing Regional Director, Ken Bendy, announced that even though he will no

longer be our day to day contact through RRCA, he will be working on overhauling the State Championship Program currently in place. I

can’t wait to see what new & exciting ideas his many years of experience bring to the table!

While on the subject of Regional Director, I’d like to announce our new Regional Director is Lena Hollmann. Lena was the State Rep for N.

Carolina until this election and is actively involved in running community there. She brings an impressive resume of knowledge and

experience to the position of Regional Director. Should you wish to contact Lena with any questions her email address is

[email protected]. You can read about her and the other board members of RRCA at http://www.rrca.org/rrca/board/

On a final note, please mark your calendars for the National Run @ Work Day which is scheduled for September 18th. Last year we had 2 of

our clubs create ways to encourage locals to participate in the event and I’m hoping that we have even more this year. Start making your

plans now. http://www.rrca.org/programs/runatwork/

As always, should you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact me.

Betsy

Executive Race Directors Report: /Chuck George Warmer weather conditions and safety while running during hot and humid temperatures are currently at hand. Many runners will choose to plan their training runs during early morning or late evenings possibly during twilight or after dark to take advantage of cooler conditions. The Road Runner's Club of America ( RRCA) has some excellent information concerning General Running Safety Tips and Hot Weather Running Safety tips. These programs/tips are available for review and printing in a downloadable pdf format Go to www.rrca.org, click on the "Programs" link on top of the home page to find these printouts on the Runners Safety, Education and Advocacy section. Also please remember that the NOTC strongly discourages wearing headphones or similar devices that limit your ability to hear during your training run, especially if you are running after dark. The NOTC is pleased to announce that the All-Comer's Track Meets will be returning. Complete details are being finalized at this time and will be posted on our website and a flyer will be circulated by mail. The meets are scheduled for June 5, June 26 and July 24th (Friday) starting at 7:00PM The meets will be "FREE" (no entry fee) The NOTC is underwriting all expenses. Thanks to St. Martin's Episcopal School for offering their track for hosting. Distances planned are 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, 1600M, 3200M, 1 mile, 5K, 4x 100 relay, 4x 400 relay, distance medley relay. Want to get involved. Volunteers are needed. We need timers (digital watch or stop watch needed, no experience necessary) No awards, just the opportunity to run and enjoy a track meet atmosphere. All finishers will be timed. Being involved with these meets when they were previously held at both Tad Gormley and Muss Bertollino, I distinctly remember the genuine gratitude from the participants in our making the opportunity for an All-Comer's track meet available. Well worth the time and effort and great for our metro area runners of all ages and abilities. Please come out to help and/or compete. No one is too fast or too slow. /Chuck

Racing Ahead

By

Dudley Stadler

Do you love some great New Orleans music? Do you love listening to local bands? Do you love local food

or beer at races? How about running right along side the lake and seeing the sunset on the North shore of Lake

Pontchartrain ?

There is free parking at the Treasure Chest Casino and the Pontchartrain Center but come early so you don’t

have to walk too far before the race. The Back to the Beach 2 mile and ½ mile Race on May 29th

at 7:00 P.M. runs

or walks on the jogging path along Lake Pontchartrain. It starts at the end of Williams Blvd. at Lake town.

After a nice enjoyable race, you can pick up your t shirt if you live out of town or register on race day.

Should supplies run out, you will be told where to go to pick up the shirts. These shirts are nice shirts.

After performing the race you can enjoy Kentwood Springs Water, Elmer’s Chee Wees, or bananas at race

site. You can also go to the race participants refreshment tent located inside the festival grounds will have Bud Light

Beer, Coca Cola Products, and jambalaya (courtesy of River Parish Disposal). In order to enjoy these amenities, you

must show your race number which gives you entrance to the Back to the Beach festival on Friday after the race.

The musical entertainment on Friday after the race is brought to you by Rockin’ Doopsie Jr & The Zydeco

Twisters followed by the Bucktown All Stars. These are groups you definitely should have heard of if you are a

follower of the music scene in New Orleans. If you have not heard of them, then come on to the race and festival so

you can hear the bands. They er really rock.

From the same stand that has performances, the award ceremony will occur. For the first race, the ½ mile,

there is a 1,2, and 3 place overall award for male and female. For the second race, the 2 mile, there are 1st overall, 1

13th Annual United Way Mississippi River Bridge Run/Walk

Saturday, April 4, 2009, 8:30 AM

Destrehan/Luling, LA

Weather: Mild, 60-65°, perfect!

Race Director: Chuck George, New Orleans Track Club

A large field of near 1800 runners and walkers hit the pavement or bridge that is at the 13th Annual United Way of

St. Charles Mississippi River Bridge 5K Race. Presenting sponsors were Motiva Enterprises and Valero. With a

record prize money purse of over $5000 on the line, St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne fired the starters

gun and off they went. In the men’s division, Neil McDonough from Pensacola took the lead and never looked back

in winning with a 15:09 time. The women's field was close for the first few miles then Sarah Skotty from New

Orleans pulled away to take that title in 18:29. Rounding out the top three male finishers were Joseph Simuchumba

at 15:49 and Matt Manning at 15:54. The women’s field had Megan Broussard 2nd at 18:57 followed by Eva

Lustigova at 19:29.

Race Directors note: The 1 mile cone and timer was placed accidentally at 150 feet past the actual mile mark.
