Here's a surefire method to guarantee you achieve the best results from your sales letters. Rather than make a salespitch that your prospects will very likely ignore, instead present your products or services as the answer to theirproblems.

When you offer the help that your target audience is looking for it won't be hard to make sales. You can show that youreally do understand the needs of your market by addressing these five specific questions right up front in your salesletter.

1.What's In It For Me?

This is the number one rule of salesmanship. People buy products for one reason only...what they will receive out of it.You must instantly tell any prospect exactly what they will get out of your product. Your best opportunity to do this isin your headline. Make a bold statement right up front and capture your target audience immediately.

2.How Will My Life Become Better?

This is where you have to understand the emotional appeals that attract your prospects like moths to a flame. Do theywant to become richer, smarter, better looking, thinner or more popular? Do they want to save time, money or effort?Study your niche market until you know what emotional buttons to push and you'll see a huge increase in your salesinstantly.

3.What Will Happen If I Say No?

The Dos And Don'ts of Profitable Mail Order Ads--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regardless of how you look at it, the most important aspect of any successful mail order business is its advertising.In fact, mail order success is wholly dependent, and even predicated upon good advertising.

First of all, you've got to have a dynamic, spectacular ad that attracts the eye and grabs the interest of the peopleyou're trying to sell to. Thus, unless your ad really "jumps out" at the reader, your sales won't live up to expecta-tions, and your ad money will be wasted.

The eye-catching appeal of your ad must start with the headline. Use the headline to very quickly create a picture inthe minds of the reader--a vision of all their problems being solved, and attainment of the kind of happiness theyseek. If your headline fails to catch the attention of your prospect, you cannot hope to capture him with theremaining of the ad, because it will go unread! So in writing your advertisement for just a little while, so you mustquickly interest him in your offer, show him how he can get what he wants, and then cause him to sendimmediately for your "solution" to his problems. Your copy must exude enthusiasm, excitement, and a positiveattitude. Don't be afraid to use a hard-sell approach! Say what you feel and believe about your offer. And usecommon, "everyday," but correct English.

Even so, you can and must remember to be honest. Don't exaggerate or make claims you can't back up. Never makepromises you cannot or don't expect, to keep. To do so could get you in trouble with the Federal Trade and FairPractices people.

Stress the benefits of your product or service. Explain to your reader how owning a copy of your book (forinstance), or receiving your services will make his life richer, happier, and more abundant. Don't get involved indetailing all the money you've spent developing the product or researching the information you're selling, or you'reselling, or your credentials for offering it. Stress the "sizzle" and the value of ownership.

It is important to involve the reader as often as possible through the use of the word "you." Write your copy just asif you were speaking to and attempting to sell just ONE person. Don't let your ad sound as a speaker at a podiumaddressing a huge stadium filled with people, but as if there were just one individual "listening."

And don't try to be overly clever, brilliant, or humorous in your advertising. Keep your copy simple, to the point,and on target toward selling your prospect the product or service because of its benefits. In other words, keep itsimple, but clear; at all costs, you don't want to confuse the reader. Just tell him exactly what he'll get for hismoney; the benefits he'll receive; how to go about ordering it. You don't have to get too friendly. In fact, becoming"folksy," and don't use slang expressions.

In writing an ad, think of yourself as a door-to-door salesperson. You have to get the attention of the prospectquickly, interest him in the product you're selling, create a desire to enjoy its benefits, and you can then close thesale.

Copywriting, whether for a display ad, classified ad, sales letter or brochure, is a learned skill. It is one anyone canmaster with a bit of study, practice, and perhaps some professional guidance.

Your first move, then, is to study your competition, recognize how they are selling their wares. Practice rewritingtheir ads from a different point of view or from a different sales angle. Keep a file of ads you've clipped fromdifferent publications in a file of ad writing ideas. But don't copy anyone else's work; just use the ad material ofothers to stimulate your own creativeness.

Some of the "unknown facts" about advertising--and ad writing in particular--tell us that you cannot ask for morethan $3 in a short classified type ad. Generally speaking, a $5 item will take at least a one-inch display ad. If you'retrying to sell a $10 item, you'll need at least a quarter page--perhaps even a half page of copy--and $15 to $20 itemsrequire a full page. If you are selling a really big ticket item (costing $50 or more) you'll need a four-page salesletter, a brochure, separate order coupon, and return reply envelope.

If you're making offers via direct mail, best to get into the postal system with it on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, tobe sure it does not arrive on Monday, the first and busiest day of the week. And again, unless you're promoting abig ticket item, the quality or color of your paper won't have any great effect on the response you'll get, but thequality of your PRINTING definitely will, so bear this in mind when you place your printing order.

One final point to remember: The summer months when people are most apt to be away on vacation are usually notgood months for direct mail. But they ARE good for opportunity and advertisements in publications often found invacation areas, and in motels and hotels.

Again, it cannot be stresses too much or often: Success in mail order does, indeed, depend upon advertising, and aswith anything else, quality pays off in the long run. Read this report again; study it; let it sink in. Then apply theprinciples outlined in it. They have worked for others, and THEY CAN WORK FOR YOU!

How To Start Your Own Carpet Cleaning BusinessThere are two fairly new, and very important conditions existing in the world today that have not only made thecarpet cleaning industry a "billion dollar business," but also practically guarantee your success as an entrepreneur.

First, almost all homes and office buildings built since 1960 have wall-to-wall carpeting. Secondly, the replacementcosts and the cyclical faltering of the national economy have caused people to want to make what they already ownlast longer, especially in the case of carpeting, which is a sizeable investment.

Most of the businesses employ janitors or janitorial services to vacuum their carpets after hours daily, and then"master" carpet cleaners to deep-clean their carpets perhaps several times a week, and then hope to deep-cleanevery spring or fall, depending on the kind of household traffic, and on their budgets.

It's true that people everywhere try to save money by handling these jobs themselves. However, empathy with thepeople, and and understanding of this trend, should be neither cause for alarm nor a deterrent to your success in thisbusiness.

Most people are just too busy to handle all their do-it-yourself projects. They continually put off until later anychore that requires special equipment. This is especially true with carpet cleaning, because deep down, they'refearful of botching the job. Thus, they're more than willing to pay an expert or a specialist to do this kind of workfor them.

It doesn't take any special education, skill or experience to operate a professional-type, deep-cleaning carpetcleaner. Yet, from your first job onward, you should project the image of a thoroughly experienced expert in yourfield. And, we're going to show you how you can get started in this business, and make $300 or more per workingday, with virtually no investment!

The important part of this business---or any other business---is the owner-operator's "sense of marketing" andsalesmanship. Make no mistake about it, all businesses succeed through marketing strategies and salesmanship.You won't be selling a product with this business; you'll be selling a service. And the selling of services is oftenmore difficult than product sales.

Your success in this business will be predicated upon the sales effort you put forth. Getting it off the ground willrequire a great deal of selling expertise on your part. You'll have to sell yourself AND your services.

Therefore, it will be to your benefit to learn all you can about selling. Then, you should continue to add to yourknowledge through an on going program of learning. keeping up to date and being aware of successful selling ideasand methods will add to the total success of any business person.

Even before the acquisition of equipment, you need customers. Your prospects are all the businesses and homeswith carpets in your area. Your problem is going to be in reaching these prospects, impressing upon then the ben-efits of your service, and getting them set up with an appointment for you to do the work.

We have found that the latest expensive and most productive method of reaching these people is by way of neigh-bor hood "hand-out" flyers or announcements, delivered door-to-door by Brownies or Cub Scouts, or members ofother youth organizations. These flyers are advertisements or announcements of a "Carpet Cleaning Special,"printed on 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 sheets of paper that invite the recipients to call you for an appointment.

Study the carpet cleaning service ads in your local newspapers, the yellow pages of your telephone directories, andany similar flyers you may have received or seen. Make a pencil sketch of your own flyer, emphasizing customerbenefits and your capabilities of doing the job and take your ideas to the advertising class at a local college. Ex-plain your project and ask for volunteer help. In most cases, you'll be favorably impresses with the work, and willonly have to pay with a copy of the finished flyer for the student's portfolio, and a recommendation or testimonialabout his work for you. Even if there should be a charge for the work you have done at the college, it will be areasonable one. ~ Continued next page...

Contracting with an advertising agency will probably take longer and will cost a significant amount of money.However, you might be able to contact a staff member who does freelance work on the side. But you should set aspecific date for completion of the project, and agree to pay no more than half the total estimated cost until the jobis finished, and meets with your approval.

The next step is to take this original of your flyer to a printer, and have printed whatever number of copies youwant to start. Most quick print shops will be able to print up to 20,000 copies, and deliver in a reasonable time,with nominal costs. If you decide to start with more than 20,000 copies, you will do better by going to a regularcommercial printer. Larger quantities that would take a quick print shop all day can be handled by a commercialprint shop in a few hours.

While your flyers are being printed, you should be lining up your delivery people--local Brownie or Cub ScoutTroops. No big problem here. Either look up their local headquarters office in your phone book or call a friend ortwo with children about the right age for the name and phone number of troop leaders. Arrange to pay these scouttroops $10 for each thousand circulars they hand out door-to-door.

One other thing before you start handing out your flyers---be sure that you have someone available to answer thephone and set up appointments for you. It's usually best to have a woman do this; it makes the caller think of yourservice as an established business. You can pay an answering service to handle these calls for you, but if your wifeor a friend is available that would be even better. It is, however, imperative that a "live voice" answer your phone.People have some strange ideas about answering machines, and most businesses find they do much better not usingthem.

Your "secretary" should have a set pattern of answering your calls, and an appointment book. Usually, your flyerwill advertise a special such as "Your living room carpet deep-cleaned for just $20. Get all the ground-in dirt andunpleasant odors out. A professional job by experienced master carpet cleaners, and we can do it all for youtomorrow. Give us a call; set up a carpet cleaning appointment with us now; and we'll have your home sparklingclean, ready for company in no time at all!" This special offer should take you no more than an hour in thecustomer's home, meaning that your secretary can book appointments for you at the rate of one every ninetyminutes or less, depending on the travel distance between jobs, enabling you to book more appointments.

Just as soon as you have job appointments lined up, hurry over to your local cleaner distributor, your local rent-allstore, or even some super markets and rent a steam-clean carpet cleaner. Most of the time, you won't have to payuntil you return it, but even if you do have to pay at the time you take it, the cost is usually $25 or less for twenty-four hours. You should bear in mind that carpet cleaning is a type of service business that takes you into the homes of yourcustomers. Therefore, how you look, dress, and handle yourself---particularly in the presence of your customers---will have a direct bearing on the success of your business.

Be clean, and conduct yourself in a business like manner at all times. Dress neatly. In fact, one of the best ways toget off to a fast start is to purchase a working uniform from Sears, Ward's or Penny's. Go out of your way to be polite and friendly with your customers, but refrain from being fresh. Avoid gettinginvolved in extended conversations--if you are to keep on schedule, you won't have time for a lot of talk.

On the subject of advertising, so long as you don't erect a sign on your front lawn or your roof, proclaiming for allthe world to see the fact that you're operating a carpet cleaning business, you won't have any problems operatingyour business from your home. Sooner or later though, you'll have to buy a city or county business license. So, thesooner you do this and are approved by the licensing agency in your area, the better you're going to feel and themore confidence you'll exude in all your business dealings.

Definitely plan to run a quarter page ad in your local business and telephone directories. You'll really be surprisedat the number of calls you get from these ads. At least in the beginning, you should run a regular ad in yournewspaper. This should be a display ad, at least 2 columns wide by 4 inches deep and should appear in yourWednesday and Thursday papers. As you become established, it won't be necessary to run more than an ad everyother week in your Wednesday papers and before holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, whenpeople always want to spruce up their residences.

Radio and television advertising really doesn't pull that well for this kind of business when you compare the coststo the number of jobs you get from it. I would suggest, however, that you contact these media and try for a trade orbetter agreement. You clean their carpets on a regular basis, and they allow you to store up advertising credit to usein the spring and fall when people are really serious about spring cleaning, and Thanksgiving and Christmaspreparations.

It's also recommended that you register as a "probationary member" of your Chamber of Commerce. This will addprestige to your business, and enable you to associate on equal terms with the various other business leaders inyour community. Joining and attending civic club meetings, participating in their causes and events, will also resultin long range business income for you.

Something else to keep in mind: Get the word about your being in business out to the people in your area. Get theChamber of Commerce to mention you in their newsletter; send "blurbs" about your business and service to allyour area newspaper, TV and radio stations; arrange to put on an all-day demonstration of your work on thecarpeting in the covered mall areas in your city's shopping centers, and hand out brochures at all home building,remodeling, and home improvement shows. Do the same thing at your county fair, and hold seminars on the care offine carpets. The ideas for free publicity and promotion are limitless, so use your imagination and "push" to getyour name in the paper and on radio and TV as often as possible.

There's always going to be competition. Some of it will be good for you, and some of it will be bad for you. Acceptit as part of life. Just keep in mind that you're in business because you feel you can do a better job; you can do itmore efficiently; and you can do it with greater satisfaction to your customers than anyone else. Be aware of thecompetition, but don't worry about it. Just stick to your own business plan, and you'll be okay.

Depending on the population of your area, you should be planning for additional carpet cleaning machines and thehiring of people to do the work for within three to six months---that is, unless your original motive for a businessof your own was to see how fast you could work yourself to death. Assuming that all goes well with you, within acouple of years you should have "hired help" running the business while you enjoy the fruits of all the hard workyou put in at the outset.

I personally don't see the need for you to even consider buying a franchised operation. There's just too much realhelp available for the "independent" to go to the considerable expense and obligation of a franchise. starting fromscratch, and as an independent, this is most assuredly a low-investment, low-overhead type business---the kind werecommend for anyone and everyone who's determined to make it on his own.

A carpet cleaning business of your own is one of the easiest of all small businesses to start. You'll find the initialstart-up costs well within your reach, and the margin of profit most astounding! It's an easy business to operate, andyet one that can be called necessary to today's standard of living. It carries a very high rating on all businessevaluation stability charts, and it's a business that will grow rapidly to bring you the monetary rewards you desire.

Poor health for most women is the build up of poor life-long nutrition choices and the lack of exercise, bothcardiovascular and weight exercise. If you make good choices now and exercise on a regular basis, you're lesslikely to become a strain on the health system years later.

And it's been proven over and over for many years that women who do make these good choices tend to behealthier and live longer.

You've probably heard most nutritionists say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And it is becauseif you eat breakfast you'll not only gain fuel for a high-energy and productive day, but you'll also have a tendency tomake better food choices during the remainder of the day.

The mistake most women make when making a choice for breakfast is to just eat cereal. And it doesn't help with allof the commercials out their telling us that cereal is all you need.

Yes, cereals rich in fiber like bran flakes, oat bran, all-bran, and raisin bran are very healthy for you. And mosttypes of cereal with a banana, strawberries, low-fat milk etc are very good for you.

But it's important to know that while they may contain ample carbohydrates, calcium, fiber, other nutrients, are lowin fat and easy and quick to make, they don't contain nearly enough protein.

And it's the protein that's more than likely the missing ingredient in your diet.

Your muscles need protein, and cannot function properly without it. Women who attempt to lose fat and/or tone uptheir muscles, will get the best results when they consume an ample amount of protein with breakfast.

But it difficult to get good quality protein during breakfast, unless you were to eat a bunch of eggs and bacon,which of course would lead to a whole other problem

So how do you get enough protein without eating fat?

Well the only way you can is to include Whey protein. Whey protein is a powdered supplement that you can buy inany health food store and most super-markets.

All you have to do is either mix one scoop in with your cereal (it dissolves very easily) or just stir a scoop in a glassof water. Either way it's the best way to get the protein you need at breakfast.

Don't focus on any one meal. All of your meals should be nutritionally well-balanced. Meaning they should containprotein, carbohydrates and some fat. Fat will help dramatically to keep your energy levels high.

If you're dieting you need continually fuel your body throughout the entire day. This means a minimum of 4, butpreferably 6 meals each and every day. This way you'll have the energy to exercise properly and won't crave anylarge unhealthy meals.

Don't get caught up in the Fat-free food frenzy. Fat-free foods are very high in simple carbohydrates and willincrease your insulin, which will "Feed" your fat cells making you fatter very quickly.

A good nutrition plan starts when you're making your grocery list. Then of course you have to stick to the list!Another good idea is to shop for your groceries just after you've eaten. This way you won't be tempted to fill up thecart with junk food.

Nutritionally poor food is fine in moderation. But don't over-do it. Take one day each week to satisfy your cravings.You won't eliminate all the good things you've done over the rest of the week. There's little wrong with it and infact it'll help you stay on track.

If you try to eliminate your favorite "junk food" completely it'll lead to binge eating in only a couple of weeks.Then you'll have a lot of trouble getting back on track.

When it comes to meats chicken, tuna (and most other fish) and turkey are your best choices. They're lower in fat,which means they're lower in calories as well and have less cholesterol.

But don't eliminate red meats. They're not only an excellent source of protein but also of iron, zinc and creatine(which helps tremendously with fitness). So try to include a couple of meals each week that contain red meats.

Banana's, oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits are the best fruits. They're rich in vitamin C and potassium. Eatfruit and drink juices daily. But be aware fruits and fruit juices contain a lot of calories, so if you're trying to loseweight once a day is good enough.

Supplements are meant to supplement healthy eating, not compensate for poor eating habits. But if you aren'tgetting the nutrients you need, for example you'd need to drink a ton of milk plus take other calcium rich foodseach day to get the calcium you need, then a calcium pill a day may be a good idea.

Exercise is not an option. Cardiovascular exercise and more importantly resistance exercise (weight lifting) isessential for good long-term health. Muscles will increase your metabolism making it possible to lose fat, andresistance exercise has amazing benefits for your heart and other organs.

A daily vitamin E may help protect against heart disease and cancer. Because people cannot easily get enoughvitamin E in common foods, a supplement of 200 to 400 international units (IUs) per day is a wise health invest-ment.

How to Choose, Start, and Succeedin Your Own Part-Time Business

This is a great time to start your own business, even if you have never thought of yourself as an entrepreneur. Theeconomy is getting tighter, may companies are laying people off, and a paycheck doesn't go as far as it used to.

Meanwhile, Internet sales and mail order are booming. We're also seeing record numbers of new home-basedbusinesses starting and succeeding. Getting in on this trend now could be the smartest thing you do in the yearahead.

Here are some common sense tips to help you pick the right business, get off on a good foot, and succeed over thelong haul.

Choosing Your Business

One of the reasons a great many businesses fail is the owner jumped off into a field they didn't know much about.Your best bet is to choose a business you have worked in as an employee. Otherwise, plan to spend timeresearching the topic in libraries and in conversations with people who are already in your chosen industry.

Keep expenses down to a bare minimum in the beginning. More than a few new start-ups blow their cash on a bigoffice, fine furnishings, and new computers. I started my business years ago from a spare bedroom. A writer friendrealized her apartment was too small to house her business and rented an unused room in a nearby office.

Plan on running your business part-time for the first year while you keep a regular job. This may seem like the slowway to get your project going, but a regular paycheck will ensure you have plenty of time to give your business itsbest shot at succeeding. Nothing torpedoes a new business like expecting it to profit huge amounts of cash withinthe first six months.

The easiest and cheapest business to start is a service you can provide to other businesses. You may need little morethan an email address and a telephone number to get the ball rolling.

If you worked in accounts receivable for several years, help businesses outsource their bookkeeping chores. Awoman in my town turned her 20 years of office experience into a thriving home-based business by offering to helpsmall businesses straighten out their books. She placed ads in the neighborhood newspaper and arranged to beinterviewed for an article.

Internet referral programs and mail order are two industries that are booming, easy to get into, and, while they maynot make you rich, are a good way to get started in your own business. Many networking and reseller firms havechanged their strategy from "bug your friends" to "network on the Net." These can be great ways to get experienceselling established products in an organization set up to encourage home-based business. Look for an opportunity

Market in Many Ways

The key to your business success will likely be your ability to market your products and services. Withoutmarketing, nothing sells. It helps if you set up your business from the beginning with marketing in mind.

Your business should give you the opportunity to promote in several ways:

1) Use a web component. The Internet lets you reach thousands of targeted prospects at the cheapest price inadvertising history. Put up your own web site. Fill it with good information, answers to the kinds of questions yourcustomers and prospects ask. Build your own opt-in email list to stay in touch with customers. Nothing works aswell or as cheaply to build your reputation.

Work to get your site listed on the major search engines. The top 2% of businesses on search engines account forabout 90% of the Net's money-making sites. Advertise your business in ezines that reach your best prospects. Somenewsletters let you reach tends of thousands of potential customers for $30 to $40.

2) Your business should also take advantage of face-to-face marketing. When you talk to people in person, it isharder for them to walk away without buying. One man, an excellent sales person who closes more than 90% of allsales, simply strikes up a conversation with people. Near the end of the conversation he will mention his offer.People almost always buy.

3) For all that has been said about the Internet, the good old telephone is still the center of our business world.When you spend time talking with someone on the phone, you build a personal bond with them that often leads to asale.

Before you get on the phone with a prospect or customer, quickly jot down what you hope to accomplish with thecall. Don't let more than two or three minutes of conversation go by without making an effort to achieve your goal.This organized approach will help you stay away from long days on the phone without much to show for it.

Be Determined

It doesn't matter what business you are in, there will be days when you feel like you are spinning your wheels.Realize that for every up trend there will eventually be a down trend. When sales are slow or customers aredifficult, remind yourself that a turnaround for the best is always just beyond the bend.

Much of business success has to do with simply showing up for work every day. When people see you or hearabout you month after month, then year after year, your consistent presence builds customer confidence. Confi-dence turns into loyalty. Repeat customers and good word of mouth will insure you get repeat sales for as long asyou own your business.
