INCA STONEWORK and INCA BUILDINGS: The Inca were masterful Architects and stone masons. Inca Architecture has withstood centuries of abuse and time, and come out largely in place. We understand some things about the Inca Culture because of the archaeological information from sites such as Machu Picchu (see above). The Incas were brilliant engineers. They formed amazing projects by fitting gigantic stones together. They quarried and carved their stoned from the mountains. The Incas built massive forts with stone slabs so perfectly cut that they didn’t requite mortar, and they are still standing in near-perfect condition. They built stone roads through the mountains from Ecuador to Chile, with tunnels and bridges. They also built stone aqueducts/passageways to their cities to carry water from the mountains. It took thousands of men to move the stone and build buildings, such as new palaces, temples, and walls around their cities and forts. CUSCO / CUZCO The capital city of Cuzco was a very busy city. It was the main place of Cuzco government. Messengers, called chasqui, traveled from Cuzco with news to other cities. Armies, engineers, priest, and administrators traveled to and from Cuzco. Llama trains arrived with foods and goods. It was the center of the Inca Empire, and was advanced in engineering, agricultural techniques, architecture and stonework. Cuzco was well guarded. There was a huge tollgate to enter the city. The Gateway Guards checked everyone. These guards were also responsible for the criminals of the city.
