PETER TASSELL’S PRESENTATION AT AUGUST MEETING Mixing Colours for Shadows and perspectives

[Peter’s palette is almost as messy as mine!!]

[the completed painting] At last month’s meeting, Peter Tassell gave an informative presentation about Colour Mixing for Shadows and Perspectives. As I’m relatively new to the painting game, I had no idea what this topic was going to all about. I found the advice provided by Peter very useful. The other attendees felt the same. I was also just as interested in watching his painting technique!! Detailed notes from Peter’s presentation are attached with this newsletter. You never know what you are going to learn or experience at the monthly meetings. If you haven’t been to one for a while, why not drop in to have a chat with friends and see something interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing what Frank Lee will be doing with his airbrush. DC Peter has provided me with another couple of examples of his artwork which clearly demonstrate his use of colour to create perspective. Thanks again Peter. DC

19th September is the bus

Patricia and her late husband, Reg, were based for six months in a delightful little village called Ditchling, in Sussex, the country where she was born, staying with a lovely lady named Joy. Patricia says she knew all the favourite haunts and took Patricia and Reg to see them. Here is another of her stories. This one is a bit spicy - loved it! Thank you again Patricia. DC Those heady days exploring famous houses while on holidays By Patricia Newell-Dunkley From here we went to Charleston Farmhouse, in Sussex, known as ‘Bloomsbury-by-the-Sea’, which was a country retreat of the Bloomsbury circle. Vanessa Bell, Virginia Woolf’s sister, moved here in 1916 with her two sons Julian and Quentin, the painter Duncan Grant and writer David Garnett.

The Bell’s had an open marriage and Vanessa had a daughter with Grant, who was raised by Bell, while Bell had consummate affairs with Roger Fry and Grant.

Charleston is fascinating and contains a unique and remarkable collection of their paintings, textiles, ceramics, decorated furniture and interiors. It is the last surviving complete house ‘decorated’ by Bell and Grant.

Doors, chimney pieces, walls, furniture, everything is richly painted; there is not a bare surface anywhere. Chair seats and carpets designed and stitched textiles and pottery, together with Vanessa’s husband, Clive Bell’s collection of books, furniture and paintings.

To add to its beauty, it is hidden at the foot of the South Downs between Brighton and Eastbourne, with its own magnificent walled garden. The grounds are sublime to say the least, brimming over with buttercups and daisies, hollyhocks and delphiniums, statues and seats. It is all a continuation of the ‘Bloomsbury Set’, outdoor art scene. It is presented to visitors as it was when Grant, the Bells, family and friends were living and working there.

Next door to the Farmhouse are the Charleston Shop and Gallery where you can purchase a variety of products, including her books and cards, prints and Virginia Woolf memorabilia, plus local products.

Virginia Woolf met Vita Sackville West while living in Sussex, and the two had a passionate love affair. “Portrait of a Marriage”, is a great read. So perhaps we should visit Sissinghurst Castle next and discover the famous “White Garden”.

Robert Chapman’s Fab Fakes Critique

We were lucky to have Robert offer to critique our Fab Fake efforts. Not many brave souls were game enough to bring something in, but those who did were given honest and professional feedback. It was great to be advised by a recently retired judge. This is photo above is me admitting that I have bitten off more than I am currently skilled enough to handle just for the moment. This is a beautiful painting by Ellis Rowan, an Australian painter from the 1900’s. I’ve temporarily retired this one. However, Robert did advise that I am on the right track and need to work more effectively on colour strength. Wendy Scorgie received the biggest tick of approval. Well done Wendy. A couple of general points Robert made were that it seems the most talented artists sometimes can’t help adding their own touches, which means they would not win a prize. If a painter is doing a fake for their own pleasure, this would not matter. He also said that having a perfect colour match is not vital as these days the colour for printers vary a lot and also the original artists mixed their own pigments from scratch. DC

AUGUSTUS EARLE 1793-1838

Augustus was born in London, the youngest child of American parents. His father, James Earle was an artist. Augustus attended the Royal Academy and was exhibiting there at aged 13 years. Unlike other artists who were financed by wealthy patrons he was able to travel and earn his living through art. The work he produced on his travels records the effects of European contact and colonization during the early 19th century. He started to travel in 1817 first going to Sicily and Malta visiting Gibraltar and North Africa en route. [A portfolio of these travels is held by the National Gallery, Canberra.] In 1818 he left on a journey that would take him around the world, North and South America, Tristan da Cunha, New South Wales, New Zealand, the Pacific, Asia, India, Mauritius and St Helens to return home in 1829.While in the Americas the works he produced dealt with the subject of slavery and also landscapes and portraits. In early 1824 he departed from Rio de Janeiro to take up an offer in India. Atlantic storms forced a stay at Tristan da Cunha where he, his dog and a crew member went ashore to sketch. The ship set sail without them enforcing an 8 month stay on an island with only 6 permanent residents. While there he became a tutor to several children and continued to record his impressions until his supplies ran out. He was finally rescued by a vessel going to Van Diemen’s Land arriving in Hobart in 1825. A small number of works survive from this period.

He left Hobart for Sydney where he soon established a reputation as the colony’s foremost artist. During this time his work fell into 3 categories, Landscapes, Aboriginal subjects and views of public and private buildings that record the development of the colony. He made excursions as far Port Stephens and Port Macquarie and the

Illawarra and up the Hunter River. Some of these pictures are at the National Library, Canberra. In 1827 Earle left to visit New Zealand where he lived at Hokianga Harbour on the North Island. A large number of works from his NZ sojourn remain, covering subjects such as romantic landscapes, Moari culture and village life, the effects of warfare and portrait studies. He produced watercolours, oils, pencil sketches and lithographs. He returned to Sydney in 1828 where he spent 6 months before going home via India and other Asian countries. In 1832 he embarked with Charles Darwin on The Beagle but ill health forced him to leave the ship in Montevideo. [Conrad Martens took this position] He died in London in 1838.
