If you think you’ve been seeing ACTS in local media more often, you’d be right! Donna Martin and Samantha Hall met ACTS Executive Direc-tor Carla Cloud at a Community Service Network Luncheon. Cloud explained that ACTS had no budget for marketing, but Martin and Hall said their newly formed Martin Wilson Marketing Agency “has a heart for non-profits.” As their business grew, they were looking for ways to give back. The agency adopted ACTS, and soon ACTS had its first market-ing plan, re-designed brochures, and advice on re-vamping the Re-sale Store, with more to come! ACTS was also able to take ad-vantage of a special program with the Aiken Standard. Standard staffer Daniele Ligons came to tour ACTS and designed newspa-per ads with the theme “So Much More.” The ads have been used to promote special events at the Resale Store, and the fan and heater drives. ACTS has also taken the “show on the road” with presentations at agency fairs, meetings and conferences including St. Paul Lu-theran, Wise Outrageous Women, DOE, United Way, Community Service Network and others. If you would like to have an ACTS representative make a presenta-tion at your event call 649-3800.

ACTS volunteer John Sanders and store clerk Kim Noah (above) have been working to make the Resale Store look more like a Re-tail Store! They are standing next to the Silent Auction, which has been very successful. Sand-ers, who has a background in fashion, researches items to see what their value might be. Bid-ders are given a number, which they write in a notebook with their bid. Recent items have in-cluded a camera which sold for $160, an authentic Dooney & Bourke handbag, vintage watches, high-end dog accessories, and jewelry.

Noah said books are also a huge seller at 25 cents each, as well as items to re-purpose. A wooden rocker with a damaged seat was recently sold to a crafter who planned to make it into a planter.

Come and see what’s new today!

ACTS thanks the UPS Foundation for its gift of $10,000 to be used for utility assistance. L-R are UPS employee Jane Stewart, Aiken Office USP Facility Manager Ron Shepherd, ACTS Ex-ecutive Director Carla Cloud and UPS employee Mandy Sims. Stewart and Sims applied for the UPS grant in memory of Stewart’s father who was a faithful ACTS volunteer.

Volunteer training time!

Volunteers come and go, client needs change, rules and policies shift on the local and national level. But the ACTS Volunteer Handbook hadn’t changed in 12 years!

This past summer ACTS Administrative As-sistant Gaile Boyd took on the task of updating the handbook. She included job descriptions for the various volunteer positions, as well as an organization chart, rights and responsibilities of volunteers, dress code, confidentiality poli-cy, whistleblower policy, service policies, safety and emergency procedures and an ACTS wish list.

“Everyone feels more confident when there is consistency in an organization,” she ex-plained.

Classes were also held re-cently both to train new vol-unteers and to be sure cur-rent volunteers were aware of recent changes in policy and procedures.

Friends of ACTS!

Follow ACTS on Facebook! Just look for Acts of Aiken. Keep up with the latest and “share” with your friends so they can be friends of ACTS too!

People who bike to ACTS now have a convenient, safe place to leave their bikes thanks to Ernesto Barquet. Barquet, a member of Boy Scout Troop 115 built the bike rack and matching bench in his advancement to Ea-gle Scout. He is a reg-ular volunteer at the monthly Senior Food Program, and the bench is used by those waiting for the senior food drive as well as people waiting at the bus stop in front of ACTS.

Is your mailbox filling up with calendars?

What can you do with all those 2015 calendars? Bring them to ACTS! Senior Food Saturdays will be marked on the calendars and then the calendars are given to clients when they arrive to pick up their food. It helps them remember the 3rd Saturday is Sen-ior Food Saturday!
