Spotlight On: Jasmin Haley, RDH, MSDH Create Your Lasting Legacy as an Educator

As educators we

are tasked with preparing the future of our profession.

With the complexities of curriculum develop-ment, academic re-sponsibilities and stu-dent learning out-comes, we are often left overwhelmed or burnt out. How can educators balance their personal, profes-sional, and academic goals? How can you thrive in your profes-

sional career while making a lasting im-pact?

This keynote presenta-tion will support you in creating your pro-fessional legacy.

Jasmin Haley, RDH, MSDH is the founder of Beyond the Prophy® and Co-founder of MOMgienists®. She is the executive producer and creator of the MOMgienists podcast and the highly successful Beyond the Prophy pod-cast.

Diane Peterson, RDH, MEd is an Academic Relations Manager for Colgate Oral Pharmaceuticals, cover-ing seven states in the Northeast re-gion of the country. She joined Col-gate from Vermont Technical College where she was a full time faculty member. She has nearly thirty years of clinical expertise in the field com-bining many roles including clini-cian, educator, advocate, and re-searcher. She has developed and pre-sented courses to student dental pro-fessionals, professional associations, dental societies and study clubs. Her focus is to provide dental profession-als with current scientific research and information to assist them with making active, evidence-based rec-ommendations in their clinical prac-tice. Diane is an active member of the American Dental Hygienists' Associ-ation, the American Dental Educa-tion Association, and the Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene Honor Society.

Special thanks to Diane and to Colgate for continued support of the Fones Edu-cator’s Workshop and dental hygiene education.

Looking for ways to

add vital and innova-tive content to your program? Bring internation-

ally recognized speakers into your classroom using the Colgate Dental Educators Network! This dynamic net-work will allow you to enhance your courses with information directly from the experts! Here you will find all the resources you will need to easily en-hance your coursework. Together we will explore the use of the Educators Network with application to classroom teaching and learning. Find innovative ways to “create” an interactive class-room for an enhanced learning experi-ence for your students. Learn about the offerings for professional development in the “Educational Methodologies” section and how to apply all of these resources to the CODA dental hygiene standards.

We are suffering from the stress of be-ing forgetful. We ask stu-dents to memorize drugs, patient names, medication conditions, etc. But rarely, do we teach them how. 99% of the population uses rote memory, a technique based on rep-etition. As you probably already experienced, this is NOT effective.

Let’s change the inefficiency and finally awaken the brain power. We will do so by exploring the special education methodology, called WakeUp Memory™. This tech-nique existed for thousands of years and I modified the proven tool to suit the dental profession. We will start by discovering the fascinating

mechanism of the brain and memory formation. Then, we will apply the WakeUp Memory™ methodology in many areas of teaching – pharmacol-ogy, medical conditions, oral pathol-ogy, etc. to demonstrate its effective-ness. Lastly, we will try some exercis-es to test the methodology.

Claire Jeong, RDH, MS

is an entrepreneur, author, educator, researcher, and international speaker. She is the founder of StudentRDH/SmarterDA –The top dental hygiene and assisting exam prep solutions. To her audi-ence’s testimony: “Learning is now addi-tive.” Claire is the pioneer of the WakeUp Memory Technique™ that is

internationally adopted by profession-als/educators/students how to use the brain and remember information effi-ciently. Her seminars are enlightening, and the audience becomes glued to their seat. She combines this unique technique to all courses she teaches, to maximize the audience’s learning experience .

Dental professionals

value the role that di-versity contributes to so-ciety. Diversity has evolved and includes more than race and eth-nicity. Many diverse populations are underserved or overlooked. There are a number of popula-tions that have growing evidence of health disparities. Educators must prepare themselves and the future of our profession with ef-fective strategies to provide the best patient-centered care. This course will explore the advances in cultural research and best practices for implementation into the dental hygiene curriculum.

Jasmin Haley, RDH, MSDH is the founder of Beyond the Prophy® and Co-founder of MOMgienists®. She is the execu-tive producer and creator of the MOMgienists podcast and the highly successful Beyond the Prophy podcast.

She serves as an educational con-sultant for the JACQUES Initiative and is part of the Preparing the Future Faculty Champions at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Jasmin's proudest career highlight is being in the unique position as a dental hygienist in educating future physicians, den-tist, dental hygienists, lawyers, so-cial workers, pharmacists, and nurses interprofessionally in fighting the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Jasmin helps dental professionals get out of burn out and push past their comfort zone while conquering their passion. She inspires and empowers professionals through her supportive Career Advancement Academy mem-bership community, 1:1 Coaching, and Annual Think Beyond the Prophy Conference. Jasmin was recently na-tionally recognized for her work as a 2018 Sunstar/RDHAward of Distinc-tion recipient.

She is an expert on HIV/AIDS, an advocate for the opioid epidemic, and crusader for cultural sensitivity in the dental industry.

Thorough debridement

is the basis of periodontal treatment and a profound seg-ment of dental hygiene expertise. Stud-ies indicate Canadian dental hygiene graduates use ultrasonics with an out-dated (traditional) approach resulting in an “unconsciously incompetent” clini-cian. As clinical educators we were frustrated and needed to make a change. But without ‘evidence’ to present to our administration we had no proof and thus no basis on which to implement change. Here is our story on getting that proof; our study tested a revised ultrasonic curriculum aimed at producing a more “consciously competent” graduate. What we weren’t prepared for was the unprecedented results and what it would mean to dental hygiene education. Hav-
