In today’s lesson…
You will make revision notes on the following key areas:
• Primary, secondary and tertiary recycling• Products that use recycled materials• Disassembling products to recycle materials
Homework:
Complete the recycling symbols research sheet
All 6R projects should be handed in NOW
Recycling
Recycling means re-using a product; but sometimes, before a product can be reused, it will need to undergo processing or treatment
Spot the difference…
Discuss in groups the difference between the three recycled products below that all started life as the same product
Primary Recycling:
‘The second hand use of items – whether clothing, electronic or product based’
In the space provided, sketch three products that you think could be suitable for primary recycling
Then, consider the various different options available to somebody looking to recycle these products in such a way
Extension: Can you think of any positive and negative effects of primary recycling
Secondary/Physical Recycling:
‘The process in which waste materials are recycled into different types of products’
Gather around the back table in order to complete a quick practical exercise based around secondary recycling
Secondary/Physical Recycling:
‘The process in which waste materials are recycled into different types of products’
In groups, discuss whether or not you think that the following products benefit from materials that are sourced through secondary recycling
Extension: Consider the processes or products that provided these materials
Can Hat:
Tyre Swing:
Compost:
Whilst this is not strictly a ‘product’, it classes as secondary recycling as the original products are broken down into their organic state for re-use by the environment
Biodegradable:
Using the following video, write a definition of the term ‘biodegradable’
Extension: Make a list of materials that you think are biodegradable and those which are not

Tertiary/Chemical Recycling:
‘When products are broken down and reformulated’
Use the following short clip to answer the questions on the recycling of glass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R8YObQbE88
Extension: Are there any potential negative environmental impacts caused by the recycling of glass
Recycling Through Disassembly:
Disassembly: reprocessing materials for use in new products
How does the following clip suggest that a mobile phone can be recycled through disassembly?
What materials in particular are useful to recycle through this process and why?

Classroom Ctachphrase:
Answer a question correctly to remove one of the squares
The person who answered the question then gets to guess what the image under the squares is trying to tell you
The person who gets most answers correct wins a better chance of getting a GCSE A grade!!!
