IMPROVING TWICKENHAM STATIONFOR RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015 &THE TWICKENHAM COMMUNITY

England will be hosting the Rugby World Cup (RWC) in 2015the third largest sporting event in the world.

We expect over 600,000 people from around the world to comeand visit Twickenham for the six weeks of the tournament.

Twickenham deserves a station that meets the demands of RWC 2015 and provides a legacy for local people and the area.

The majority of fans and visitors who willtravel to Twickenham will arrive by train anduse Twickenham station. The station isunwelcoming, lacking facilities and copingwith large numbers of people on match days isa challenge despite the best efforts of theexperienced Twickenham station staff.

Whilst London has invested heavily in infrastructure forthe Olympic Games in 2012 with improved transport links andstations, Twickenham station has yet to see any improvements.

MAJOR CHANGES RESPONDING TO LOCAL RESIDENTS

A proposed development on behalf of Network Rail andtheir chosen developer, has very recently been significantlymodified and reduced in scale via a second planningapplication. This has been done in response to commentsfrom Richmond Council made, in effect, on behalf of thoselocal residents who have objected so strongly to the firstapplication. For station landowners Network Rail, it is acarefully considered modification of their original schemethat still meets their requirements for a modern stationredevelopment. While it may still not meet everyone’sexpectations, this second application is the only alternativethat is in play at the current time.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIPWorking with key partners Network Rail, South West

Trains, Department for Culture, Media and Sport,Department for Transport, Richmond Council and Mayor ofLondon, we hope to achieve significant improvements toTwickenham station in time for the Rugby World Cup.

We all want to be proud of the experiencethat visitors from around the world will havewhen they come to Twickenham.

ALL IN ONE – YOUR AREA YOUR SAYVisit the Civic Centre Twickenham on Saturday 11 June

Following the massive response to the All in OneSurvey (over 13,500 people – 17 per cent ofborough households), Richmond Council is set tocontinue as a leader in involving residents indecisions on their local areas.

The survey has given the Council a better picture aboutwhat local people want for their areas, including what they likeabout them, what issues matter the most and what needsimproving. The next phase of the All In One programme willinvolve holding nine planning events across the borough.

At the events you will be able to see what people in yourarea have said, talk to others who are interested, as well aslocal councillors, officers and representatives of other localorganisations, and have the opportunity to put forward yourideas and suggestions, about what we can do together.

The events are a starting point for drawing up action plansfor each area that will be put together with local people. Themeeting for residents of Twickenham, St Margaret’s, EastTwickenham and Strawberry Hill will be on Saturday 11 June.It will take place at the Civic Centre, 44 York Street,Twickenham TW1 3BZ opening at 10am and closing at 4pm.
