Our young readers learn so much about how to read as they navigate their way through a good story. Reading also helps to build empathy. Principal’s Message Reading fiction is a pastime that we should all

embrace. A good book can hook you in. With

a good story, you want to turn the next page

and you must find out how it ends. Our

young readers learn so much about how to

read as they navigate their way through a

good story. Reading also helps to build

empathy. You get to look through the

characters eyes into places you have never

been and experiences you wouldn’t normally

have. When you put the book down, you are

a slightly different person. You have thought

about what it is like for other people. You

have learned lessons and you have imagined.

It is through imagining that things can be

different that individuals make a better

future.

What is the next book that you will read?

Change of Date - Parenting

Information Sessions

Intereach Deniliquin will be hosting sessions

for parents of teenagers on Wednesday 10th

November, 17th November and 24th

November from 9.30am to 12.30am.

More information will be advertised closer to

the date.

Kitchen News This term, years 4,5 and K/1 are having their

long-awaited turn in the Kitchen. We are

excited to welcome back Shirley Brumby to

the kitchen. Shirley has been busy organising

the pantry and getting the storage cupboards

back into order for our students to use.

On the menu this week we had – Mexican

green rice, Mexican chicken, wheat tortillas

and Moroccan carrot salad for Years 4 and 5.

The students were keen to try new recipes

and the feedback was positive. They were all

willing to try it – some were pleasantly

surprised that they did like some unfamiliar

foods.

The K/1 class had an ‘Introduction to the

kitchen’ session. We focused on hand

washing, putting an apron on, and sitting at

the table. Students were served carrots,

celery, cheese, corn relish dip and corn chips

on a plate. They practised walking to the

table and sitting up responsibly. Next week

Kinder will be focusing on the skills of

spreading and cutting.

It was a great start to the term, and we look

forward to more recipes from the Stephanie

Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

throughout the term.

Garden News In Garden this week, Year 2/3 were busy

maintaining the new native plants in the Fairy

Garden. There was a mountain of tasks to

carry out, these included hand watering,

weeding, mulching and redirecting watering

systems. You can see the difference in the

garden! Be sure to look over the fence if you

are walking past to see the progress we are

making with the revegetation.

Book Week Celebrations Last term we celebrated book week online.

Unfortunately, this meant we were unable to

host our annual book week parade. After

much consideration, we have decided to not

go ahead with the parade this term and

instead look forward to hosting the event in

2022. Despite this, we hope everybody

enjoyed their online book week activities in

their classes and celebrated their favourite

book in some way.

During book week, we posted a book week

drawing challenge to each class. Here are two

of the drawings submitted, drawn by Sid and

Matt. Great work Sid and Matt!

What’s New in the Library! Exciting things have been happening in the

library this week! We have swapped out our

old wooden bookshelves for some new, taller

shelves, giving us a lot more room to put new

books. We’ve also upgraded our tote tray

shelf which features a seat on the top now.

This will be a great new spot to sit during

library lessons, as modelled by our lovely

Year 2 girls! Thank you to Mrs Buchanan and

Wayne for helping set this up and giving our

wonderful space a fresh a new look.

Term 3 PBL Reward

On Thursday and Friday of Week 1, students

enjoyed their Term 3 PBL reward of student

lead play. Even though the session had to be

modified due to COVID-19 restrictions

students enjoyed choosing the activities they

wanted to participate in. They expressed

creativity, co-operated with peers and

showed off some fine and gross motor skills

whilst exploring what their classroom and

yard had to offer.

Some activities included:

• LEGO

• Drawing

• Cricket

• Chess

• Dancing

• Football

• Toys

PBL Universal Expectations The beginning of

Term 4 has seen

students focus on the

Universal

Expectations. They have been revising what

our values are and how they impact students

and staff.

Week 1 & 2 saw Stage teams explore the

value of Respect.

PBL Awards Classroom and playground awards play an

important part in our PBL program.

Postcards

Postcards are handed out during class times

and given to a student displaying the value.

These cards are used to promote

conversations in the home about the values

and what behaviours were shown.

If your child brings home a PBL postcard

allow them to share and explain how they

behaved when they received the award.

Behaviour Merit Cards

Behaviour Merit cards are also given out

when values are shown in the playground

and the classroom. These cards are then

placed in a post box outside the Kinder/1

classroom.

At our Friday small assemblies one card is

drawn from the post box and the student will

receive a $5 book club voucher.

K-2 Reading Awards Weeks 1 & 2 of Term 4 have seen 19 students

receive a reading award. Teachers were very

pleased to see many students continuing

their home reading routines over the

holidays and into the new term. It is with

great excitement that the first 100 nights of

Reading awards have been awarded to Will,

Isabelle, Addison, Raymond & Robert.

It is an expectation that our K-2 students are

reading 5 nights a week and being exposed a

range of texts.

As Barack Obama once said, ‘Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible.’

K/1 and 1/2 Science The K/1 and 1/2 students will be constructing

shields as a part of their science unit

‘Dinosaurs and more’. We would appreciate

any items that we can use to construct our

shields such as small containers (e.g. from

yoghurt, margarine etc), small cardboard

boxes and cardboard tubes. Thank you!

Learning Walks At Barham Public School we aspire for every

student, teacher and leader to collaborate

and seek feedback to improve. Our teachers

have been engaging in learning walks to

share their teaching with their colleagues.

This important collaborative practice helps

our teachers self-reflect and use feedback to

adopt highly effective teaching strategies and

improve outcomes for your child.
