construction. The hotel was just beginning to take shape. Since last December, wehave poured all floors of the hotel, met our IGA agreement and turned over the trainplatform to RTD, removed the temporary truss towers, "topped" out the building, began all the interior work of drywall, electrical finishes, etc., removed the cranesand hung almost all the exterior glass - just to name a few milestones!

Construction proceeds on the Westin Denver International Airport Hotel, scheduled to open inNovember.

It is hard to believe that in just a year the Hotel will be completed – currently weare targeting a mid-November opening. Over the next year, you will see the plazabegin to take shape with pavers being placed and public art pieces beinginstalled. Work will begin fast and furious on the interiors of the hotel with all thefinal finishes going into place. It will be a busy and exciting year for the Hotel andTransit Center Program and before you know it, the new Westin Denver InternationalAirport will be open for business.

Next Stop, PanamaAs countries go, Panama is thin and long. From Panama City, on the Pacific side ofthe country to Colón, on the Atlantic side (Caribbean Sea), it is approximately 50miles.

Unless you have a geography test pending, you could file away this bit of informationas a Jeopardy question.

Or, you could travel the 50 miles yourself by flying nonstop from Denver to PanamaCity. This flight is now possible via United Airlines, which started this service lastmonth.

Panama borders Costa Rica on the north and Columbia to the south. It bridges thetwo American continents; more locally it links Central America to South America.Panama has 1,544 miles of coastline, which is not as much as California, but is morethan the Hawaiian Islands. Its highest point is Volcán Barú, which is 11,398 feetabove sea level (3,475 meters).

The Canal

The CIA World Factbook says, "Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptlysigned a treaty with the United States, allowing for the construction of a canal andU.S. sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama

Canal Zone)."

In 1999, 85 years after the Panama Canal was finished, the United States turned overthe entire Canal and supporting areas to Panama. The Panamanians have beenexpanding the Canal since 2007, and its capacity could double when it is completed(scheduled for this year).

The Panama Canal, now 100 years old, serves scores of cargo and passenger ships daily.Panama is expanding the Canal to increase its capacity.

You will want to explore this beautiful country—its jungles, rivers, lakes, islands andvolcanic mountains. You will want to walk cobblestone streets through old town, sitoutdoors at restaurants, and perhaps have ceviche de camarones (shrimp), followedby ropa vieja with patacones (a stew comprising shredded skirt steak, tomato, onionand garlic), and finish off with pesada de nance with cheese (a custard flavored withthe nance fruit).

Old Town in Panama City takes visitors from the modern city back to colonial times. Panamahas restored most of the buildings here. Many restaurants and bars bring the section to life. AtPlaza Bolivar, for example, five restaurants have set up tables and umbrellas right on thesquare.

If a city sojourn does not appeal to you, find adventure by rafting, surfing, kayaking, holding on to a zip line, or hiking Barú, a currently inactive volcano. Or travel to thecoast or any of the five national parks. Two unique beaches are on islands within theBocas del Toro archipelago: Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos and Starfish Beach onIsla Colón. The islands' names are eponymous—you will indeed find red frogs andscores of starfish.

Surf's up in Panama.

The country has many areas of crystal-clear water for snorkeling and viewing coralreefs. For five months during their breeding season, whales seek warm waters offPanama's shore. Dolphins usually can be seen at Dutch Keys, Coíba National Park,Bocas del Toro, and the Pearl Islands. And five species of sea turtles lay eggs onPanama Beaches during the rainy season.

By the way, if you want to buy a Panama hat, visit Victor's in Old Town.

This year's commemorative holiday coincided with the release of the movie Selma, which is based on the march that Dr. King, the Southern Christian LeadershipConference (SCLC), the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, and othermarchers undertook in March 1965 from Selma to the state capitol in Montgomery,Ala., to ask for African-American voting rights in that state. An earlier march thatmonth, known as "Bloody Sunday," had been stopped with brutality near the EdmundPettus Bridge in Selma when sheriff's deputies attacked some 600 peaceful marchers.

conclusion, Dr. King met with executive board of the SCLC to decide to call for aboycott of Alabama.

In a press release, Dr. King said, "For the past three months we have been working inAlabama, hopeful of changing the dreadful conditions of violence and terror whichexist there and working to establish a truly democratic society in that state. Ourmovement has demonstrated nonviolently for the most simple and basic democraticright, The Right To Vote, and while we have stirred the national conscience to thepoint that Congress is considering new voting rights legislation, the state of Alabamaremains a sordid spectacle of racism, violence and brutality."

On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

About 30 years later, Congress designated the march route as the Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail.

Denver International Airport's Natural GasVehicle Fleet Recognized for SustainabilityFor advancing the use of natural gas in its vehicle fleet to reduce emissions, improveair quality, and create safer working environments, Denver International Airport hasbeen awarded the 2014 Natural Gas Vehicle Achievement Award.

The achievement award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to theadvancement of natural gas as a vehicular fuel, was presented to the airport Dec. 4,2014, by the Clean Vehicle Education Foundation and Natural Gas Vehicles forAmerica.

"We take great pride in having one of the most efficient and environmentallyconscious vehicle fleets in North America," said DEN's senior vice president of airportinfrastructure management, Dave LaPorte. "We will continue to invest insustainability throughout all of our operations."

The airport's fleet and equipment inventory has approximately 1,750 vehicles andequipment, ranging from large snow-removal vehicles, Aircraft Rescue andFirefighting rigs, forklifts, cranes and light-duty vehicles to smaller equipment suchas concrete saws. Approximately 29 percent of the airport's fleet is powered withalternative fuels, such as compressed natural gas (CNG). The airport's 165 CNG assets

include buses, sedans, light-duty trucks, lawn mowers, generators, air compressors, forklifts, sweepers/scrubbers, and asphalt-patching equipment.

In December 2013, DEN was one of 29 large fleet owners that committed toaccelerating deployment of natural gas vehicles and fueling infrastructure in Coloradoby signing a memorandum of understanding during the Colorado Governor's NaturalGas Vehicle Summit. In April, DEN was recognized as one of the Top 100 Fleets inNorth America, and was the only airport fleet ranked in the top 50.

By switching parts of its fleet to natural gas, the airport prevented the equivalent of3,347,600 pounds of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere in 2013 alone. DENrequires the use of natural gas or electric vehicles in its underground baggage tunnelsto protect air quality for airline and airport employees, and the airport's fleetmanagement division provides CNG testing services to about 475 vehicles operated bytenant airlines.

Elvis Presley's Two-Plane Fleet Being Auctioned

Star Flew to Denver to Pick-up Fool's Gold Sandwich

Someone with disposable income just might travel a great distance for a sandwich.Elvis Presley, for example.

Nick Andurlakis, owner of Nick's Café at 777-1/2 Sims Street in Lakewood, remembered in a Denver Post interview when the King of Rock and Roll flew in hisprivate jet from his Graceland mansion to the Combs hangar at StapletonInternational Airport to pick up sandwiches.

These were not the mundane sandwiches that many mothers put in lunch bags orpails for their darlings' midday meals.

No, these were like gold—fool's gold—specifically, the Fool's Gold Loaf at Denver'sMine Company restaurant.

According to Andurlakis, who was a young cook at the Colorado Mine Company andhelped invent the sandwich, Presley visited the restaurant one night in 1976. TheKing asked him to recommend something on the menu. Andurlakis suggested theFool's Gold sandwich.

Presley was smitten and immediately became a fan of the creation, which is a loaf ofsourdough bread, hollowed like a tiny sarcophagus, filled with a pound of creamypeanut butter, strawberry jam (or other fruit preserves) and a pound of bacon.

When daughter Lisa Marie was celebrating a birthday, Presley and his entourage flewone of his two planes (his Convair 880 was named for Lisa Marie) to Denver to takeout and take home Fool's Gold sandwiches (actually, Andurlakis said, the meals werehand-delivered to the plane at Combs Aviation).

Now, nearly 40 years later, you can still get Fool's Gold sandwiches at Nick's Café,but Elvis's two jet aircraft—the Lisa Marie and Hound Dog II (a Lockheed JetStar)—arebeing auctioned. The former plane has a queen-sized bed, 24-carat-gold seatbeltbuckles, gold faucets and basin in the bathroom, and a 50-speaker stereo system.
