assistant

“ I like to help people and care for the sick that is why I wanted to become a nurse”, said nurse Nyawose. WORKSHOP HELD

Port Shepstone Hospital made great strides in its partnership with the National Organ Trans-plant Surgery team. The hospi-tal, in conjunction with the De-partment of Surgery, hosted Dr Elmi Muller, Professor Russell Britz, and Dr Rajan Moodlely and Ms Fiona Mc Curdie in a workshop to foster further rela-tions in this highly technical surgical field. All of these distin-guished guests represent the South African Transplant Socie-ty. The workshop was well at-tended by more that fifty health care workers from this region. Dr Muller has been voted wom-an of the year for her role in Renal Transplant surgery at Groote Schuur hospital in Cape Town. Professor Britz, from Pretoria, is one of the foremost liver transplant surgeons in the country and Dr Moodley

is head of transplant surgery at INkosi Albert Luthuli hospital and Ms McCurdie is the West-ern Cape transplant coordinator. “ Due to the increasing number of end-stage renal failure pa-tients requiring dialysis, com-bined with the scarcity of this vital life-saving commodity, Port Shepstone hospital felt it imperative to offer their pa-tients other forms of renal sal-vage in the form of transplant surgery”, stated Dr Maharaj, Head of Port Shepstone hospi-tal Surgery department. This workshop was aimed at build-ing bridges between the hospi-tals where potential donors are situated and tertiary referral centers where patients with end-stage organ failure are identified and treated.

O nce again, Port Shepstone Hospi-tal held its Open Day event as means to share latest infor-mation and new devel-opments with the general public. This took place on the 13 September 2011.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE

COMMUNITY ?

We need to make sure that the hospital health

care systems are strong enough to support people who live within our catch-ment area and that we can put in place programmes which support the needs of our people. On this day we showed-off our services in creative ways. Displays and information stalls were set up for the public to view and learn many things about the hospital. To make this day more fulfilling for the public, the hospital management team and the board must be present . This enables people to pose their concerns directly to management and be

able to get immediate responses. This interaction proved to be helpful again this year in address-ing problems that the community raised. The day started off with formal sitting function at the hos-pital’s Clinical Teaching hall where all formalities took place. The key message conveyed to the community is the importance of adhering to the KZN Depart-ment of Health’s Referral System. Secondary messages included the complaints mechanism, im-portance of testing for HIV/AIDS and the issue of patients who go for OPD services that they will be seen by any doctors, so patients were asked not to choose to be

seen by specific doctors as this increases work overload for some doc-tors and less work for others. This proved to be a very fruitful session which gave a platform for a positive dialogue for both the community and

the hospital management

P ort Shepstone Regional Hospital staff showed that they are proud of

their heritage on the 23rd of September 2011. Staff marked

the day by dressing up in their traditional attire, prepared vari-ous traditional dishes and shared history of various traditional groups in the hospi-tal . As South Africa is becoming a non racial society, we use events such as these to showcase our diverse cultures so that we don't for-get where we come from. We were intro-duced to various cultural back-grounds. It was ex-

plained where Zulu, Xhosa, English, Afrikaners and Indi-ans came from and how they became part of South Africa. It was indeed an eye-opening session where we learnt one or two things about one another’s culture. I must say that events such as these make a place of work a place everyone is proud of. Professor Moodley From the University of kwa-Zulu Natal –Faculty of Arts, guest speaker for the day embraced the issue of ac-cepting diversity in the work-place as this increases un-derstanding and tolerance among the employees. Vari-ous entertainment groups staged for the audience presenting the very best in acting and singing.

P ort Shepstone hos-pital puts human resource as a number one priority more than any other asset. Mrs Thoko Somtyele, was a guest speaker for the day and in her speech she gave insight on issues pertaining HIV treatment and the importance of disclosing one’s status to a supervisor or a close friend for support. She encouraged people to continue using condoms as HIV virus cannot be detected by mere looking at someone’s face.

She further emphasised that preven-tion should start from the health work-ers before reaching the community,

meaning they must “practice what they preach” The campaign was well attended by the hospi-tal staff and by the local South African Police Service (SAPS) representatives, Colonel Slub-bert and Colonel Rossouw. There were repre-sentatives from local health organization i.e Hospice. This was an information filled day as more and more light was shed on HIV/AIDS prevention and acceptance.

HIV/AIDS is one of the most serious, fatal diseases in human history and it still continues to infect and affect our people. As means of taking responsibility in get-ting HIVAIDS infection rate down, on the second of December 2011, Port Shep-stone Regional Hospital held an HIV/AIDS event to reach out to both employ-ees, patients and the community at large in order to educate them about how HIV, the treatment programmes in place and ways of living a positive lifestyle.

We therefore aim to involve our patients , visitors and people from all sections of our commu-nity in the work that we do. Hence we host an Open Day function at least once a year. There are various ways in which people can get involved in help-ing us to shape and improve services– these are listed below

PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

2011 a busy, but fulfilling Year! This year has been one of the busiest and yet an exciting year for both manage-ment and staff in Port Shepstone hospital. We ran a number of events, meetings, projects, training and workshops. Funny, because its even hard to let go of that pace. However, after all the year’s work and all the buzz that has been going around, telephones are now ringing less frequently. I guess, people are mostly focusing on preparing to go to the beach and they are preparing for Christmas holidays.
