T he national physiotherapy back week initiative took place from 6-11 Sep-tember2010.

Edendale Hospital Physiotherapy Depart-ment instituted a number of awareness drives, both in the hospital and in the com-munity, in support of this initiative.

The in-hospital drives focused on promot-ing back care amongst the Staff, especially amongst Nurses and any other Staff who are routinely exposed to lifting patients and heavy objects. Short 30 minute presenta-tions were done in the selected wards or departments. These presentations were of a practical nature, where the Staff would perform the technique while the Physio showed them how to protect their backs while doing so.

PHYSIOTHERAPY BACK WEEK 2010

We had a great response from the Staff involved, They were all very enthusiastic and eager, mak-ing it a fun experience all round.

The South African Society of Physiotherapists (SASP) also requested that the two Comm.-Serve Physios go out into the community and distribute pamphlets. These pamphlets aimed to increase the public awareness of back care and described a few simple back care pointers for everyday situations (i.e.: lifting, standing posture and driv-ing posture, etc)

Page 9 STAFF WELLNESS DAY—23 SEPTEMBER 2010

G EMS introduced well-ness screenings to

raise awareness of health conditions within govern-ment departments. Govern-ment employees benefit from the convenient oppor-tunity to be professionally screened for existing and potential health risks. The aim was to enable employ-ees to detect health risks as early as possible so that the progression of diseases is prevented or minimised.

G EMS saw 78 employees on Thursday. In their HCT stand

they saw 1 employee who did HCT (Testing for HIV only) and 6 tested for HIV and also do well-ness. The rest only do wellness. GEMS wellness day was a suc-cess since most employees man-aged check at least BMI. GEMS COMMENTS / SUGGESTION

• Employees have a very high stress level.

• GEMS reported that most em-ployees are Obese and that is dangerous for their health. They recommended coming at least quarterly to do a well-ness. Another recommenda-tion was to have a GYM center for employees, because most have a BMI of 30-50 which is extremely dangerous. Dieti-cians need to be involved for diet and weight education.

YOUTH HEALTH ACADEMY LEARNSHIP PROGRAMME

GARDENING PROJECTS

T he ‘Siyaphila Support Service’ that was sent by USAID from Pretoria visited the WhizzKids United Health Academy in Edendale to increase the knowledge of

their volunteers concerning the topics ‘life skills’, TB, HIV, AIDS and STI. The pres-entation especially trained the volunteers on the tuberculosis program and helped them to identify the falters of treatment within their community by doing home vis-its. Besides the tuberculosis program the ‘Siyaphila Support Service’ also taught the volunteers the education of other young people on TB, HIV and AIDS.

The WhizzKids United Health Academy volunteers created their own garden to plant vegetables in order to cook for themselves as well as cooking for the attending vul-nerable children and orphans within the academy. By showing the children how to plant their own vegetables instead of buying them, On a visit to the ‘Sunshine Farm’ the kids also learned important managerial and leadership skills. The garden of the WhizzKids United Health Academy in Edendale is able to feed hundreds of orphans and vulnerable children. This is one of the reasons why the WhizzKids volunteers are also promoting the “one garden one home” initiative.

Page 12 EDENDALE HOSPITAL SPORT FUN DAY 2010

After 8 months of hard work, long hours and countless meetings, Edendale Hospital hosted a successful Sport Fun Day 2010 held at the Alex-andra Park on the 18th of September 2010. The sta-dium was chosen because it is near the river and the park.

T he Sports Day activities com-menced around 8:30 am. There

were about 400 people attending the event. Most of them were competitors and spectators. Some of them were the official and members of the cheering teams. Fears of summer rains washing out the event resulted in a hot but enjoyable day for participants and spectators alike. The support we received from EDH staff and the surrounding hospitals was reassur-ing. The following sport codes were ca-tered: Fun run, fun walk, Potato racing, sack racing, three legged racing, tug of war, Three tin, netball and soccer.

Trophies and medals were presented to the winning and runner up teams

by the Hospital CEO Mrs. ZSI Ndwandwe and the Metropolitan CSI Spe-

cialist, Miss Patronella Sono. We hope to expand on the events and add

more sports codes as more people are participating in the event. The hos-

pital was in a fortunate position to receive sustainable sponsorship from

Metropolitan. All the participants enjoyed themselves and had an unforget-

PMTCT ACHIEVEMENTS

O ctober 2009. Edendale Hospital and its feeder

Clinics formed Edendale wedge to improve/ bring improvement on PMTCT. University of Kwazulu Natal with its NGO,S 20 000 + were invited by the Department of health to reduce infection rate from mother to child. In 2005. MTC transmition rate was 21%. With the help of 20 000 +.

E dendale Hospital PMTCT Quality Improvement team came with its first Mission statement which was, To ensure that all babies

born to HIV positive mothers receive Nevirapine immediate after deliv-ering. Challenge was that there was a discrepancy between babies born to HIV positive mothers and the babies that receive Nevirapine as per guideline. Sister Msthali and Sr. Molale formulated a checklist tool which made it possible that all babies received Nevirapine post delivery. Further more we allocated a dedicated data capturer in La-bour Ward who is responsible for all PMTCT Data. From December 2009 to date we have 100% NVP uptake. Another achievement is that all the babies that we done PCR from 6weeks post delivery from Janu-ary to September 2010, MTC infection rate is 4% at Edendale hospital and this rate has been achieved with the help of Family staff clinic . Edendale hospital has been awarded with a certificate of appreciation UKZN 20 000 + for the improvement that they have been made.

EDENDALE HOSPITAL HERITAGE DAY IN PICTURES

The day is one of our newly created public holidays and its significance rests in recognizing aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live. Thanks to staff for food brought in.
