President’s Corner: A Time for Everything CoA Family, I apologize for the lateness in this announcement, but I wanted to inform you that I have accepted an appointment as Superintendent/President of Palomar College in San Diego. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What do workers gain from their toil? I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil. — modified Ecclesiastes 3 My CoA Family, Friends and Colleagues… be happy, continue to do good work and find satisfaction in service!! Best to you all!

Classified Staff Professional Development Week a Success

This year’s Classified Staff Professional Development Week was held at College of Alameda from June 13-16. The week featured eight workshops covering everything from learning how to correctly do ICC (independent consultant contract) requisitions to workshops on “Leadership and Leading” and “Time Management.” There was even a workshop on "Humor for the Health of It,” which we found very beneficial to our health and longevity. Overall, the workshops were a great opportunity for growth and were packed with lots of information. Breakfast was served as well for the first three days and lunch on the last day. Also, on Thursday the day started with an open forum with the Chancellor here at College of Alameda in regards to the search for our new president. We would like to thank President Dr. Joi Lin Blake, Dean Toni Cook, Carol Molex, Shuntel Owens-Rogers, Fong Tran, Ava Lee-Pang, the Custodial Staff, Shawn Foster, Michael Duensing, Nimfa Jianoran and all those who contributed their time to make this week a success. We hope everyone who participated gained lots of valuable information and found it enjoyable. Article and graphic by La Shawn Brumfield.

CoA Students Study KT Boundary Impact Layer in Southern Colorado with Stanford Geophysicist Norm Sleep

CoA Chemistry Students Ian Stark, Armon Saffarian, Thinh Thu, Silver Alkhafaji, Stanford Professor Norm Sleep and CoA Professor Peter Olds just returned from a week of geological field work in southern Colorado. They were busy collecting 66-million-year-old KT boundary impact layer claystone (for chromite separation processing at CoA) and identifying impact earthquake-caused faults below the KT boundary. This is the asteroid or comet impact thought to have killed the dinosaurs.

The photo on the above right shows Ian making measurements on a KT boundary truncated normal fault discovered by Norm at Long’s Canyon. The KT boundary impact layer is visible as the light banded layer underneath the massive sandstone, both of which are visible near the top of Ian’s hat.

College of Alameda will partner with Alameda Family Services, who was recently awarded a KaBOOM! grant, to build a playground at CoA on July 21, from 8:30 – 2:30 p.m. on the west side of campus near automotive. The sponsors (Dr. Pepper/Snapple) will be providing some volunteers and we have agreed to recruit volunteers for the July 21 Build Day as well. VOLUNTEERS ARE STILL NEEDED. We will need 175 volunteers to build a magnificent playground in one day, and that’s a lot of people! Please commit to joining us to help, and bring your friends and family members too! Staff will be released to volunteer on the playground, but must coordinate their volunteer hours with their manager. To register please fill out the following online form www.tinyurl.com/CoAKaboom2016. Questions? Contact Teddy and/or Shane, [email protected] or [email protected]. Let’s do Peralta proud! KaBOOM! is a national non-profit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America.
