FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK A huge number of our students are involved in weekend sport. At last week’s assembly, when I asked for an indication of numbers, approximately 50% of our students indicated that they are participants. Unfortunately, netball did not get underway last weekend, due to issues outside Harbourside’s control, so best of luck to teams for this weekend. All the best to all sports codes for the upcoming weekend, and the week ahead. Remember to play hard, but fair and be supportive of everyone - your team-mates, the opposition, the umpires and referees. Students - we have had some negative feedback, from community members, about some of our walkers, skateboarders, scooter riders and pedestrians, especially along Links Avenue. A number of members of the community have been concerned that some of you are endangering yourselves by not being careful around traffic. Regardless of your route home from school, please be mindful of traffic. Remember to look both ways before crossing a road and check for turning traffic, if crossing an intersection. Families - please reinforce the importance for safety when your child is travelling to and from school. Mike King visited our school on Wednesday, speaking to us about the importance of self-belief, the need to ask for help when we have problems and being a good friend. Mike left us with some wrist bands, to be worn by students willing to be approached by other students to be a listener. We will talk more with students about this in the next few days and get these distributed in the next week. Mike’s message was well received by our students - asking your child about Mike’s visit could be the start of a great conversation. Beryl Harvey Acting Principal

MEDICAL INFORMATION

From time to time your child’s medical situation may change.

Don’t forget to let us know if your child now has different needs to when they started with us.

We have medical drawers, where we can hold medication for them, if they need to take it during school hours. These drawers are locked and can only be opened by approved staff.

We have also now purchased an Epipen, used in severe cases of allergy and/or bee stings etc. If your child requires us to use the Epipen we would then ask that family to replace it at their cost. One Epipen will be purchased at the commencement of each year by the school.

Please contact us if you would like to update your child’s medical details.

[email protected]

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the PSG for funding the purchase of the first Epipen.

INTERNATIONAL REQUEST

Once again, I am sending out a request for homestay families. As you are aware from the media, and my requests, international education is a HUGE business to the New Zealand economy and Tauranga is a major contributor to this. So many people want to come here to learn - but we can understand why, we live in such a gem of an area! More and more schools are welcoming international students into their schools because of the benefits it brings - financial, social and for our students to experience working with people of other cultures. Many of our classes have students from other countries and it is lovely seeing how the students interact and bring different ideas and perspectives to their learning. We currently have sixteen long term students and are expecting short term groups in August. I desperately need to build our group of host families to help look after these students while they are here. It is important that we provide quality experiences for these visitors as we are "selling" ourselves and need to ensure we provide a safe, caring environment as outlined in the requirements of the Code for the Pastoral Care of International Students 2016. Host families needed are as follows: URGENT- a host family for a 12 year old, long term Korean student. This student is seeking to move. She speaks good English and wants to be part of a not so hectic family. She is learning the violin and piano and enjoys sport - she wants to learn to do things the kiwi way. I am sure you will really enjoy having her. Please contact me ASAP for more information if you think you can help. Host families needed for August: 3 - 10 August: 8 students and two teachers 14 - 28 August: (to be confirmed) 6- 10 students 12 - 18 August: 7 students. These students are possibly younger and may be paired. If you are able to help or would like more information, I really would like to hear from you Thank you. Jane Howard [email protected]

Making a Difference Our Mirror Writing was an activity where we wrote about ourselves in third person. We used descriptive language to describe what makes us who we are. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mirror Writing The young girl looking directly at me, stares through her gleaming big green eyes. She is wearing a dark green

M.M.I uniform, she likes her wavy dark blonde shiny hair that she enjoys wearing down over her shoulders. She

has dark freckles that cover her nose and under her eyes, her dad tells her to put more sunscreen on her nose

and face.

She was born in the year 2006, the year of the dog. Throughout her 11 years she has had many exciting

adventures, there was a time when her whole leg was stung by a jellyfish and swelled up really bad, and luckily

her family had some sting cream on hand to bring down the swelling. She has many pet peeves one of the worst

ones are when someone comes into her room and messes up her bed and the rest of her room!

She would like to be a vet when she is older more than anything in the whole wide world. She enjoys art,

skateboarding and dog walking. Mostly she is a good quiet girl, but sometimes she can get a bit crazy. She does

well in art and in hockey she was in the A team in year six. She loves her family, friends and dogs more than

anything in the world. As I turn away from the mirror, I notice that I should start putting more sunscreen on

my face.

Mirror Writing

The girl is looking directly at me seems, vaguely

familiar.

She stares at me through her hazel eyes.

She’s wearing a blue top and Nike pro’s.

She always wears her nike clothes.

She likes her blonde highlights.

She has two gleaming studs in each ear.

From afar it seems like she doesn’t have bushy

eyebrows but up close they are quite bushy.

She was born in the year 2005.

Throughout her 11 years, she has many exciting

adventures. There was the time she was climbing up

some rocks and couldn’t reach one and slipped but

luckily her friends dad helped her get up.

She has many pet peeves one is when her annoying

older sister who takes her charger.

She would like to be a musician.

She enjoys camping.

Mostly she is cheeky and funny.

She is very silly.

She does well in reading and writing.

She loves singing.

As I turn away from the mirror, I smile and walk away.

By Emily Jane Tattersall

Mirror Writing The boy looking back at me looks convincingly familiar. He

likes his shiny and fluffy dark almond hair. He is wearing

long, shiny jeans, a crimson polka dotted polo shirt, a black

and brown belt and a golden watch. He likes his deep black

mysterious eyes, and his long jet black eyelashes. His dad always says how each strand of his hair resembles

one person that loves him. He was born in the year 2005. Throughout his 11 years he has

had many exciting experiences. There was one time when he

nearly died. That's when he discovered his Diabetes. Luckily

his parents knew the doctors and he was treated immediately.

He is mostly a cheerful lad, but he has got some pet peeves

including when his little sister gets on top of his desk and

breaks everything. His ambitions are to become a billionaire and help as many

wildlife and humans as he can, but if he cannot accomplish

that he either wants to join the army or be a zookeeper or

maybe even own a rescue centre just like Chris Humfrey. His

favourite subjects are writing, reading, geography and

history. He really enjoys watching documentaries, playing

football, helping others, studying about the prehistoric world

and animals, myths and legends and also studying wildlife

evolution and development. As I turn away from the mirror I blink and say “nice haircut.” By Caua Cunha Dias

NEW HOUSE FLAGS

We are really excited to finally to be able to produce some fantastic

school flags and boards that promote our school houses.

Just to give you a bit of history - about 2-3 years ago, we ran a competition to design a flag that can be used for various school events and can be displayed in the school hall. Students had to research the history behind their island, its name and what the island is known for. They had set specifications. The flag had to have meaningful symbolism, a simple basic design that could be easily reproduced, be distinctive and have limited colours. The final designs were then selected and a group of students would meet in the Art Room to fine tune and make templates for further consultation.

This consultation was with the rest of their team and with our school growth, another house was added last year - Karewa. This stalled the process as another design/logo needed to be created.

So, finally, at the end of last year we were approached by a parent/graphic designer who was willing to work with us in finalizing these designs onto flags and boards to be displayed in our hall, and for sports/school events around the school.

Our special thanks goes to Expandadesign for creating these.

But our huge thanks needs to go to our Parent Support Group who have primarily funded these flags and boards.

ATTENDANCE/LATE LETTERS

We are constantly monitoring all attendance and lateness for students at MMIS. This is because attendance at school is a strong indicator of success for students in the school system. MOE (Central North Region) expectations are that all students attend 94% of the school year. This includes time off school for medical, funeral and other justifiable reasons. Every 6 weeks, we notify all parents/caregivers whose child has dropped below 90% attendance, as we are legally obligated to notify you if your child’s attendance falls below MOE expectactions. 90% attendance across the whole school year, equates to your child missing 4 full weeks of school. This is a sizable chunk of time away from their learning. We realise that there are instances where your child may be away for justifiable reasons, which you have notified us of. The first letter is only to inform you, so you are aware of how your child’s attendance rate is tracking. Please do not be offended. We are simply trying to keep you informed and to ensure your child attends regularly or does not start a pattern of low attendance. As the year progresses, we undertake many check-ins regarding the attendance of all students. If your child’s attendance continues to decline or drops below the 90% mark, we will again contact you via mail. Students who continue the decline, or have exceptionally low attendance rates, will be referred to our truancy officer. He will assist in helping you and your child return to regular attendance at school. Should your child have an ongoing medical condition we need to be aware of, which affects their attendance, please notify Jenny Pearson ([email protected]) so she can place it on your child’s attendance record. You may be asked, as per MOE guidelines, to obtain medical certificates for our records. Lateness: The same system applies for our late students. In every 6 week block, our expectations are that no students should be late more than 2 times, as this is a barrier to learning and makes settling into class routines very difficult. A child who is late to school disrupts not only their own learning, but the teacher’s lesson, as well as other students and the office staff. Letters are sent home to those who are late 3 or more times in each 6 week block. Please assist your child in arriving at school with plenty of time to spare before the bell (8.45am).

ATTENDANCE/LATE LETTERS continued

From the Ministry of Education: Keeping our children and young people attending school and engaging in education has always been important. Attendance and engagement in school improves employment, social and life chances and reduces the development of antisocial behaviour and youth offending. Poor attendance, or truancy is a clear indicator of disengagement from education and is often a precursor to students leaving school early without the education and qualifications they need to succeed in today’s world. Truancy can often lead to other more serious misbehaviours that may set young people on an unsatisfactory life pathway with poor social and economic outcomes. The school should have systems to monitor student attendance, identify poor attendance and/ or truancy and provide support and assistance to improve attendance and commend students’ changed behaviour. Some students need extra support to keep them engaged in education. Schools and parents need to work together to enable these students to stay engaged at school. Truancy incidents or poor attendance patterns are best addressed as soon as they begin to emerge, rather than being left until the patterns become entrenched and more difficult to turn around. Under the Education Act 1989, parents are legally obliged to enrol their children in school from the age of 6 to 16, and to ensure that their children attend school every day the school is open for instruction, unless there is a justifiable reason for their absence (e.g. illness, family bereavement). It is an offence if parents refuse or fail to do so.

Please note that at MMI, we care about providing the very best educational outcomes for our students. Attendance is part of a successful school picture and our systems are intended to be informative and to keep the lines of communication between school and home, open. If you have any concerns about our attendance systems, please contact either Jenny Pearson ([email protected]) in the office or our Deputy Principal, Melissa Nelson ([email protected]).

Kiwi Can Term Two 2017: Integrity

Kiwi Can’s theme for this term is ‘Integrity’. Your children will be learning about what integrity means and using integrity in various ways during the lessons they attend; so that they can apply the ideas outside of the classroom. We have a ‘catch phrase’ which sums up the idea. “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching”. Several teaching topics make up Integrity. These are: Honesty; Responsibility; Reliability; Making good choices; Being a role model; and Accountability. All children attend a Kiwi Can lesson once a week. You might like to ask them about what they are learning in Kiwi Can. It’s amazing how many very small children can talk about what Accountability means accurately. SPORTS INFORMATION

Anchor AIMS Games 2017

The Anchor AIMS games run from Sunday 10th September to Friday 15th September. This is an elite

sporting competition, which has attracted over 8000 students annually, from around New Zealand,

Australia and the Pacific Islands, over the last few years.

All entries are due to the NZAIMS organising committee by Wednesday 14th June. Mount

Maunganui Intermediate will be entering a number of teams in this event (Please note that this is

an elite competition and that we can only enter one team per code and we pick our best team in each

code).

The following codes offer the opportunity for students to compete as an individual:

Badminton, BMX, Canoe Slalom, Cross Country (held on the Sunday), Golf (must have a handicap),

Gymnastics, Indoor Bowls, Multisport, Squash, Swimming (must meet qualifying standards), Table

Tennis, Tennis, and Yachting.

Team sports we can enter are:

Aerobics, Basketball*, Cheerleading, Football*, Futsal*, Gymnastics, Hockey (most likely 6 aside

mixed), Netball, Rugby 7s*, and Water Polo#.

* Boys and Girls teams

# Open mixed and Girls team

If you would like to find out any extra information about any code in the AIMS games you can find

out by visiting the web page http://nzaimsgames.co.nz/

If you would like your child to be considered for an INDIVIDUAL SPORT (team sports will be

sorted later in term 2) could you please fill in details using the following link:

https://docs.google.com/a/mtint.school.nz/forms/d/1nONL8BE-ljBOjLSrb3yHsnPpV8-

I8CezTEV1XSe0s1w/edit

Please remember that this is an elite event, so your child should be playing their

chosen sport to a very high standard to be entered.

A meeting will be held, early next week, for all interested students and all codes will begin to have

trials early this term. Please note that, due to potential time clashes, a student can ONLY play for

one team sport. All trials will be held within a certain time frame, to allow students the

opportunity to trial for more than one team sport (if a student is selected in two team sports, they

need to make a choice of which team they will play for, and once committed to a team they cannot

change their minds). Please contact Troy Jennings at [email protected] if you have any

questions regarding the AIMS games.

On April 10th, I flew to Australia, as I had been selected to go to the Celtic Elite Football Camp in Brisbane. I

stayed in a boarding house in a huge school for 3 days. All the coaches were from the professional football

club Celtic in Glasgow, Scotland. There were only 7 New Zealanders and 82 Australians.

We did intense training for 2 hours, twice a day. The training focus would change every day and on the last

day we had game day. I learnt so much and I have improved a lot, in all aspects of football. I really enjoyed

the camp, even though it was very hard work, on the field and off. I hope to be selected to go again in the

future.

By Ethan Pearson Rm 21

In the last week of last term, I was lucky enough to get selected to train with the Celtic Elite Football Camp,

in Brisbane Australia. It was 2 nights and 3 days. It involved games, drills, theory and analyzation of

professional football. While we were there we played 3 games in total and the rest was intense, high speed

drills. During the time I was there I met some great new friends and some very skilful players. There were

roughly 100 players from across Australia and New Zealand, ranging from 10 to 18 years old. For me, it was

an amazing experience and I took so much away from it, but also it was an awesome experience being able

to play with such top class players.
