Principal’s Report Cont..

Curriculum at home Helping to develop number sense. Number sense essentially refers to a student’s “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001). He/ she has sense of what numbers mean, understands their relationship to one another, is able to perform mental maths, understands symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real world situations. Number sense is important because it encourages students to think flexibly and promotes confidence with numbers. Students come to understand that numbers are meaningful and outcomes are sensible and expected (Burns, 2007). Conversely, students who lack a strong number sense have trouble developing the foundation needed for even simple arithmetic much less more complex maths. Below are a list of ideas that may support your child learn and strengthen their number sense and understanding of mathematics.

• Mathematics today is about understanding and fluency but it is also about problem solving and reasoning, not learing by rote.

• Saying "I was bad as maths too" is one of the worst things you can do as it lowers their own expectations of themselves. • There is always more than one way to get the right answer. Allow your child to explore other possible ways to solve an equation but get them to justify their thinking and if there is a misconception, then help your child work through that. Sometimes it is great to explain how you solve problems as it may give them another strategy that will work. • Children are taught mental strategies, like using number lines , to figure problems out in their heads, partitioning numbers or ever compensating numbers so that the numbers become easier to add or take away. • Ask "What is the question asking you?" • Practice the times tables, rainbow facts, doubles, near doubles as these are great foundations to build on. • Don't jump in with the answers. Allow your child some time to think through a problem. • Stay positive. • Talk to the teacher if your child needs more help as we know if we all work together students’ academic growth is much greater.

KINDY NEWS

Playing our part to build a national picture of child health In early 2018, our school, along with thousands of others across the country will begin preparations for the fourth Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). The AEDC measures five key areas of development in children during their first year of full-time school to build a national picture of health and wellbeing. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and target support for children and families. Teachers are trained to assess each child and answer questions. Children don’t need to be present so no class time is missed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. Teachers’ individual assessments are then analysed by the AEDC and reported as anonymous groups of children in the final report. We used the results to support … In other communities across the country, census results have helped communities to plan new playgrounds and parental services; schools are seeing improved student performance through new literacy programmes; and governments are using the results as evidence to develop better policies for children. Teachers have also noticed practical benefits in the classroom. Some said in previous years that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole. Others reported that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and for developing class programs. Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.

HPE NEWS

Term 2 is up and running and so far it has been a busy start. We had 3 boys from Year 6 represent Gympie Zone Basketball at the Wide Bay trials, in which they played exceptionally well. Next week we have 25 students selected to compete in the Gympie Sport Cross Country. We wish them all the best at the trials. Our new tennis courts have been a great success with students utilising this facility in school ours with the high school students teaching Preppies tennis and it has been great to coach our netball team on a proper court. This term in PE we are practicing for our athletics carnival which will be held at the end of term. This week we have learnt specialised techniques for long jump and we had one student nearly jump 5m’s which is nearly to the end of our pit. We will continue to practice this event along with others so it is really important that students bring their broad brimmed hat, drink bottle and appropriate shoes and clothing.
