Their captains spoke about ramping up their efforts this term and supporting each other to all achieve their very best. We also welcomed Russell Morgan, the new Head of Performing Arts. Russell comes to us with much experience both in schools and performing having been Head of Creative and Performing Arts at Nambour Christian College for the past 10 years and also running his own theatre company. Russell has arrived full of energy and ideas to drive our Performing Arts Centre of Excellence into the exciting next phase of its development. No pressure, but one of his first tasks is to help us decide on the Musical for next year which I am sure you are all awaiting news on with bated breath. On Monday 18 July, special Academic Assemblies were held at both the Primary and Secondary campuses to celebrate the academic success of students over the course of Semester One. At the Secondary campus we welcomed back Old Collegian Jason McGavin who spoke to the students about his experiences since leaving St John’s in 2011. Jason is passionate about Science and Engineering and is an Engineering Ambassador for the University of Queensland and also facilitates Science camps for students as part of a volunteer organisation. Jason is one semester away from graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and has already been offered a Graduate Position with one of the largest engineering companies in Australia. We also heard from one of our Academic Prefects, Chloe DeNys. Chloe spoke to students about embracing the many opportunities that are presented to them right from Years Seven, Eight and Nine and provided a number of examples of the exciting opportunities that she has participated in simply because she chose to pursue them. Of note was her involvement in the UQ Young Scholar’s program and the QUT High School STEM Internship where she investigated the growth of graphene atop copper substrates, grown in different environments. Dear Families,

It was a pleasure to welcome our students back after their holidays and to see them excitedly engaging with their learning programs. This term is the busiest for our Year 12 students as they prepare for their assignments and examinations and the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test. Their captains spoke about ramping up their efforts this term and supporting each other to all achieve their very best.

We also welcomed Russell Morgan, the new Head of Performing Arts. Russell comes to us with much experience both in schools and performing having been Head of Creative and Performing Arts at Nambour Christian College for the past 10 years and also running his own theatre company. Russell has arrived full of energy and ideas to drive our Performing Arts Centre of Excellence into the exciting next phase of its development. From the Head of PrimaryDear Families

On Monday 18 July we ack nowledged those students who achieved high academic results in Semester One this year, at our annual Academic A s s e m b l y . Forty three students received certificates for their fine work and we are immensely proud of their success. At this assembly we also congratulated every student who applied a consistently conscientious effort to their learning and gave of their best. Having an attitude of ‘doing your best’ in all things can contribute significantly to achieving goals throughout life and we are thrilled to see St John’s students in all year levels demonstrating this attitude.

The ABC program ‘Playschool’ is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and is Australia’s longest running children’s program and second-longest children’s show worldwide. I love the name Playschool because it represents what should be occurring when children are learning. They should be engaged in play of various types. Play ensures that they are actively involved in the learning process and are therefore far more likely to remember the activity and any associated learning. Many studies have shown the benefits of play for children and the importance of including play based activities in teaching and learning programs.

Play includes inquiry, investigation and discovery. Play is an activity in which the process is more valued than the end. Play is imaginative and involves an active, alert and non-stressed frame of mind. When each of these characteristics are present learning can be far more long lasting and effective.

While there is no doubt that play is essential for the healthy development of young children, not everyone recognises the value of play and inquiry in upper primary and beyond. This results in some school systems continuing to teach a very content heavy curriculum, through teacher focussed methods. At St John’s, we keep abreast of the rapid changes occurring in education and know that limiting teaching practices to those used last century, does not prepare our children to be ‘future proof’.

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) places significant focus on the importance of play and inquiry. It is a framework that ensures all students not only learn important content and foundational skills, but it also prepares them to be globally minded, open to new ideas and able to think creatively and collaboratively and view information with a critical eye. All of these skills are essential for our young people to be successful in the future. We are very pleased to be able to offer such an outstanding program at St John’s.

One of the exciting stages in the PYP is the ‘Exhibition’. This showcase of student learning is a significant event in the life of a PYP school because it allows students in their final year of primary to share their learning with the community. The Exhibition is a culmination of the experiences the students have enjoyed and learnt from and is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the learner profile, demonstrate

their knowledge, skills and attitudes and share their thoughts about the action they will take as a result of their learning.

This year we will conduct our very first PYP Exhibition and our Year Six students have already been introduced to the new transdisciplinary theme and central idea they will be investigating for this Exhibition. Towards the end of August the Exhibition will be displayed in Living Faith Chapel and all Year Six students will be on hand to explain their learning to anyone who visits.

To prepare our students for this task, the Year Six teachers have organised the students into small groups and each group has a mentor to guide them and provide advice. Mentors and students will meet together on a number of occasions, prior to the Exhibition, however, the final product and presentation will be the work of the students. The students will also need to organise a budget and track expenses for their display. This experience links closely with the Business and Economics component of the Australian Curriculum. The Exhibition learning process is very engaging and fits under the umbrella of ‘Play and Inquiry’. I am sure the students will gain a great deal from the experience.

We will be inviting members of the community to visit the Exhibition when it is on display and further information regarding dates and times for the Exhibition will be provided in the coming weeks. Prior to this event though, we have our Foundation Day celebrations, Science Week and Book Week. It is such an exciting term!

Lakeside ReflectionWelcome back to Term Three.

At the senior school we have a sacred space in the foyer which we change every few weeks. The students enjoy having an opportunity to create this space. I have heard that some students have created their own special space in their homes. A place they can sit quietly and rest, think, pray and reflect. In our first week back we welcomed the students back to school.

So as we begin this new term with all the busyness it will offer, try and find some opportunities to be still even if it is for a few short moments. We need to model to our children that it is okay to stop and reflect, it is amazing how good we feel when we do this.

On our first Friday back at school we celebrated the Baptism of three students and First Holy Communion of eight primary students. It is special to welcome them into the Communion of the Anglican Church.

From the Deputy Head of College (Pastoral Care)Year 12 FormalThe Year 12 Formal is on Monday 19 September in the Grand View Room at Hillstone, St Lucia Golf Club. The Year 12 Formal starts at 7.30pm and concludes at 11.00pm. The photographer will be available in the foyer to take photos from 6.00pm. The price of the Year 12 Formal includes access to all of the photos taken by the professional photographer. These photos will be put on the student share drive at College in Term Four. All parents and guardians were emailed this information last week as well as an invitation to join other parents for dinner at the Pig ‘n’ Whistle on the night of the Senior Formal.

Community Settlement Homework ClubStudents in Year Ten to Year 12 have the opportunity to participate in the Community Settlement Homework Club which caters for immigrant high school students. The club is run on a Tuesday afternoon from 3.30pm – 4.30pm at Inala. Students can catch the College bus to the Homework Club venue and arrange to be collected by parents when it concludes. I would encourage all students to volunteer at least once for the Homework Club. It is a very rewarding experience. Please feel free to contact me for more details.

2016 Leadership ApplicationsThe Year 11 students have received the application forms for the 2017 Leadership Positions. The applications are due on Friday 19 August. The current Prefects conducted a session with the 2017 leadership candidates last week. During the session they discussed completing the applications forms, the interview process and selection as well as dealing with the pressures of being a leader in Year 12. This was a very useful session and I would encourage the 2017 candidates to continue having conversations with the Year 12 students to ensure that they are fully informed about what to expect in the leadership selection process.

Arrival Time at College As mentioned last term timely arrival at College by students has been a focus of the Heads of House this term. Students are expected to be in Home Group by 8.30am each day. A warning bell is rung at 8.25am for students to collect their books from their lockers and move to the Home Group. Attendance at Home Group is important. If a student arrives at College after Home Group they need to sign in at Student Reception. Communication should also be received from a parent or guardian explaining the late arrival. All students who arrive late need to meet with their Head of House at morning tea. If they do not have a valid excuse from a parent or guardian they will need to make the time up at another time. Repeat offenders will be required to do a detention out of normal school hours.

Semester One Academic AwardsThe students listed below were presented with a Semester One Academic Excellence Award at our special Academic Assembly on Monday 18 July. Academic Excellence Awards are given to recognise students who have performed exceptionally well across the range of academic subjects studied in Semester One. The awards are based on the student’s results in their academic subjects and are awarded to those who receive a Grade Point Average or GPA of 12.5 or above in Years 7 to 12.

It was a very special assembly and I am sure all who attended would have enjoyed the speech given by our Old Collegian, Jason McGavin, graduate of 2011. He is an excellent role model for our current students resonating the College’s values of Faith, Service and Future. Jason spoke of the need to set goals, pursue your dreams, have a balance in your life and also that hard work pays off.

What are employers looking for?The findings of a Department of Employment survey of employers’ recruitment experiences suggests that, for school leavers, they are looking for:

Experience: through work experience, voluntary work or transitional jobs (jobs you get before the job you really want).

Employability skills: team work, communication and initiative.

Personality attributes: enthusiasm, reliability, presentation and a good work ethic.

Education and training: complete Year 12 and gain a post-school qualification. Certificates III and IV, Diplomas and Degrees open the door to more job opportunities.

Year 12 Careers EducationThe Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) is a public, not-for-profit company that manages the application and offer processes for a number of universities, TAFE institutes and some private colleges in Queensland as well as three interstate institutions. Shortly students will receive their QTAC Guide to Tertiary Courses. This includes information about courses and application processes. From Tuesday 2 August, details will be available on the QTAC website www.qtac.edu.au .

Some key information:

• Students can apply through QTAC for most tertiary courses. Application to tertiary institutions in other states is through tertiary admissions centres similar to QTAC: www.qtac.edu.au/applications/apply-here/applying-interstate

• Students can apply for up to six courses from any institution that uses QTAC

• The QTAC application is online. It will be activated on Tuesday 2 August.

• The on-time closing date for applications is Friday 30 September.

Future FocusOn Wednesday 15 June, this career event was held at the College. Year 10 students heard from Mrs Hinchliffe about a range of careers from yesteryear as well as some possible career ideas for the future. Mrs Hinchliffe shared with us some interesting insights from her own career too.

Our keynote speaker was Jarred Turner from Impact Social Enterprise. Jarred believes that social enterprise is a fantastic way for young people to engage with issues that matter to them and develop real world solutions for the problems they find. He offered four tips for our students:

1. Ask for help.

2. Learn from failure.

3. Change your dialogue (from negative to positive/realistic).

4. Fight procrastination.

It was great to welcome back Old Collegian Emma Eastwood who attended the College from 1999 to 2011. Students were really encouraged as Emma reflected upon her senior years at the College, told us about her experiences since

she finished school and pondered onher plans for the future.

While it was obvious that ambition and hard work was a major part of Emma’s achievements and successes, as she talked about her overseas travel, it was great to see that she also managed to find a wonderful balance of work and fun.

Jo Macdonald works in the recruitment industry and is the Director of Aspire Resourcing. She was an engaging speaker who provided students with many practical tips for job seekers. Her favourite quote is:

“The secret to getting ahead, is getting started”. – Mark Twain

Jaskurn Singh from JMC Academy visited the college to speak about careers in Creative Media (animation, audio engineering and sound production, contemporary music and performance, digital design, entertainment business management, film and television production, game development, songwriting).

All students were welcome to visit the Lunchtime Career Expo which featured six institutions (Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology [QUT], TAFE Queensland Brisbane, Think

Education, The University of Queensland [UQ], University of Southern Queensland [USQ]). There was also a selection of resources available for students who are exploring careers.

Being Work Ready: A Guide to What Employers WantDeveloped by the Business Council of Australia to assist senior high school students, and people helping them to better understand what “work readiness” means from a business perspective.

Performing ArtsFirstly I’d like to introduce myself. I am Russell Morgan and I am the new Director of Performing Arts at St John’s. I have come from the Sunshine Coast where I was Head of Creative and Performing Arts at Nambour Christian College for the past 10 years and also was the founding Director of Inside Out Theatre Company. I am thrilled to move back to Brisbane and assist St John’s to become an alive and dynamic Performing Arts Centre of Excellence. I am teaching Drama and conducting some of the Vocal Ensembles here and look forward to directing next year’s musical. I love all things to do with the Arts and am very passionate about creating excellence for an audience to bring joy and entertainment to the world through our God-given talents.

The Performing Arts department has hit the ground running this term with lots happening and amazing experiences for our students.

Drama NewsDrama CampOn Friday 15 and Sunday 17 July, the Years Ten,11 and 12 Drama students had their annual Drama Camp. This was fantastic for students to do S h a k e s p e a re , and Gothic Theatre workshops with artists from Shake and Stir Theatre Company and The Queensland Shakespeare

Ensemble. The students also participated in special effects make-up workshops with Velbella Make-up Company along with stagecraft and stage combat workshops

which I directed.

Music NewsBeenleigh EisteddfodOn 18 July, Secondary students participated in the Beenleigh Eisteddfod where our Stage Band, Jazz Band, Woodwind Symphony and Concert Band competed.

Congratulations to our bands and their conductors on such a successful competition.

Strings WorkshopOn Sunday 10 July students from all of our String Ensembles had the wonderful opportunity to workshop with Johnny Ng from Camerata of St John’s. They were inspired and learnt new tricks of the trade.

So we have been busy, but have done some exciting and inspiring things already this term. Please note that the PACE Showcase Concert in Week Four this term has been combined with the PACE Showcase Concert in Week Seven so keep Thursday 25 August free to see the wonderful talent of our Performing Arts students.

SportSports AwardsThe Annual St John’s Sports Awards Dinner will be on Monday October 24 at Hillstone St Lucia. The guest speaker will be 2004 Athens Olympic Kayaker Amanda Rankin. Tickets will be purchased via trybooking. Tickets can be purchased individually or as a table. This year you will have the opportunity to select your table when you purchase your ticket. Captains ReportsSoccer – Huy NguyenThe football boys commenced the season with a successful weekend at home. The Year Seven team fought hard and displayed great teamwork, drawing 3 all. The Year Eight team was too strong for St Paul’s and kept them scoreless for a 2-0 win. Unfortunately, the St Paul’s side were too strong for the Year Nine and Ten teams. Both Open teams collected wins, with the Open B team scoring 4 goals to take home a win, while the Open A team kept the opposition scoreless, winning 2-0. Congratulations go to Parva Shah, for scoring in his first ever football game. Make sure to attend training every week and be prepared to face Redeemer.

Volleyball – Lucy Shaw-LombardWeek One began with St John’s playing St Paul’s. All the teams put in a great effort and played to the best of their abilities with most games had close scorelines. Congratulations this round goes to the Year Ten and Second teams who both came in with extremely close games, however were not able to get the final win coming off with 2-1 each. Good luck this weekend against Redeemer, girls. Keep up the hard work for this week’s game.

Basketball – Mitchell DrewThe basketball boys showed great strength and amazing passion with a majority of the teams coming away with a win. The year 7s and 10s teams pulled off convincing wins against their opponents. The Open B basketball won in a nail biting two-point finish. The A’s had a tough game against a strong St Pauls team and fought to the very end. They were unable to a win but were filled with spirit. The year 8s game went down to the wire but unfortunately went down by four points to another tough St Paul’s team. This week we play Redeemer away and are ready to bring home some more wins.

Touch Football – Michaela Odgers-JewelRound One fixtures against St Paul’s provided promising results for the Touch Football squad. The Year Eight, Nine and Ten teams all came away with impressive victories, while the Year Seven and Open teams displayed a clear improvement on the field and refused to go down without a fight. The Touch Football clinic undoubtedly developed and refined the girls’ skills, which ensured that we had a smashing start to the season. As all of the teams were positive and persistent throughout the duration of their games, I can easily say that this is going to be an exciting season! Good luck to all of the girls for next week’s game against Redeemer.

Primary SportThe JTAS Soccer and Basketball season is about to commence this weekend.

Thank you to the coaches from the Lions Football Club for assisting with the coaching of our Years Four , Five and Six soccer teams.

The Year Four team, under the guidance of Mr Allen and Mrs McConachy will play their first game against Redeemer this weekend at home. All the players are very excited to play their first soccer game ever for St John’s.

The Years Five and Six teams, under the guidance of Mrs Stone and Mrs E Wilson are looking forward to taking to the pitch to commence their seasons.

The Year Four soccer team will train on Wednesday afternoon with Years Five and Six teams training on Thursday afternoon.

Good luck to our girls and boys basketball teams who play their first games this weekend against St Paul’s and Canterbury College.

Basketball training is held on Wednesday afternoon in the Dome at College Ave.

The Inala District Athletics Carnival will be held on 3 and 4 August and all our District athletes are training hard for this event. Athletics training is held on Monday afternoons from 3.15pm to 4.30pm. All field event training will be held during lunch time. See the sports notice board for further details.

Science Week 1-5 AugustWeek Four is Science week, a fun packed week of various science activities which will be held every lunch time from 1-5 August. Students will get the chance to be involved in activities such as making hologram viewers, elephants’ toothpaste and slime. There will be a periodic table treasure hunt, liquid Nitrogen demonstrations and opportunities to make sherbet and try the delicious dry-ice ice-cream. As part of Science week, this year we will also be hosting a science movie night on Thursday 4 August. Students can bring their cushions and popcorn and settle down to an evening of Science.

STEM event Wednesday 3 AugustDon’t miss an opportunity to bring the family and come to try out one of the new range of Science workshops available at St Johns, brought to you by the Night Science and Astronomy Club. This term we will be working on identifying and designing practical solutions to real life problems. We will be using the produce transport issues facing the mountain farmers of Nepal as our inspiration.

The Challenge: Design, make and test a model of a system that can transport tomatoes in a way that won’t squash them!

As usual the main objective of the Night Science and Astronomy club is to create a supportive environment in which all levels of students and their families are given the opportunity to investigate, explore and create, not to mention just having fun with Science!

Queensland Water Rockets day Sunday 21 AugustSunday 21 August is the annual Queensland Water Rockets’ Day which is hosted by the West Centenary Scouts Group and held at St John’s. No prior knowledge is required, just bring your own materials and equipment and join in the fun. Registration is at 10am and the $5 per participant entry fee is payable on the day. The students may be nominated by a member of the community using the key selection areas outlined.

Uniform ShopSchool BadgesReception on the Primary campus carry a small supply of both the College and House Badges. These sell for $6.00 each and need to be paid for with cash. Remember if your child’s badge breaks or is faulty it can be returned to either the Primary Campus reception or the Uniform Shop for a free replacement.

Senior SchoolThe uniform shop is happy to help out students by providing them with items that they need even though they may not have any money on them at the time. These purchases are not added to your school fee accounts unless prior arrangement has been made with the Finance department. They must be paid for directly to the uniform shop.

Old CollegiansOld Collegians: Back at the College St John’s had the pleasure of welcoming Old Collegian Emma Eastwood (2011) back to the College as a guest speaker at the Future Focus event in June of this year. This annual College event for Year Ten students offers career advice from industry representatives, educational institutions and a host of guest speakers.

After graduating from St John’s Emma gained a Bachelor of Arts (Sociology) with Honours from Griffith University. Emma is now a motivated administration and research assistant while continuing to work as a supervisor at Target Australia.

It was a pleasure to have Emma attend this event to inspire, educate and inform current St John’s students.

St John’s Academic Assembly is a special event in Term 3 of the St John’s calendar, recognising the wonderful achievements of St John’s primary and secondary students. This year Old Collegian Jason McGavin (2011) and former Academic Award recipient shared his story with the students over the last few years and what he did during his time at St John’s to get to where he is today.

Jason first joined the College in Year Six in 2005 and over the next seven years

immersed himself in as much of the College life as he could including playing a sport in every term, playing a musical instrument, involved in College Musicals, joined TECREW, was on various student councils and anything else he could fit into the five school days a week. Jason achieved an OP 1 and was accepted into the University of Queensland to study a Bachelor of Engineering on an Academic Scholarship.

During the years since graduation he has become an Engineering Ambassador for UQ, spent some time in China doing some research at Tianjin University under their Head of Civil Engineering and staffed various science camps for a not for profit youth organisation. He is currently serving a second term as President of that organisation and also Vice-President of the St John’s Old Collegians’ Association.

With only one semester away from graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Ext. Civil), Jason has already been offered a Graduate Position with one of the largest engineering companies in Australia.

Jason’s advice to the attending students is about finding a balance and getting involved in various things in life. For most people they can’t succeed with only academics in their life. How does he know that this is true? Because when he transitioned to university Jason stopped doing all the extra-curricular activities he was doing and lost his balance. Jason lost his motivation for a while and no longer had the desire to study like he had at school. It took time for Jason to adjust

www.qldwaterrocketday.com Introduction Water rockets are a lot of fun for all ages. Come along to the Queensland Water Rocket Day and join in the fun. No prior knowledge required. Registrations are at 10am. Learn how to make and fly a water rocket (BYO materials and equipment). Competitions are from 11am until 12:30pm. This year we encourage participants to dress up in a space themed costume.

Competitions This event is open to families, youth groups and school teams. Children will need to be supervised. The event is primarily for fun but there are three competitions: Accuracy competition (target at 60m) Distance competition (max. 100 psi) Best looking rocket competition There are no age groups and teams are allowed.

Rockets can be made prior to the day or made before the completion begins. The more rockets the better your chances. Assistance will be available and instructions on how to make water rockets will be given (between 10:45pm - 11am). You are encouraged to make your own launch pad. Some will be available on the day for a small hire fee ($10). A workshop to help you make launch pads will be conducted on Friday 29 July at the Jindalee from 7pm-9pm (see website for details). Bookings essential.

Things to bring Water rockets are made from plastic soft drink bottles and odds and ends. You need to bring all of your own materials. Please bring at least two identical empty 1.25L or 1.5L soft drink bottles (preferably more), one 2L milk bottle, electrical tape, bluetac (payload), scissors, a craft knife, cutting board and money for entry and lunch (or BYO food & drink).

Family Fun at Night Science ……….. A few ground rules

The tomatoes must be transported a minimum of three metres, not touching the ground.

The tomatoes cannot be touched whilst they are moving, catapulted or flown in any way! They must be moved in a controlled way.

The team to move the most tomatoes in the shortest time wins! (all tomatoes will be inspected to ensure they are in pristine, unbruised condition)

As usual the main objective of the Night Science and Astronomy club is to create a supportive environment in which all levels of students and their families are given the opportunity to investigate, explore and create, not to mention just having fun with Science!
