THANKS TO BUDDY AND DANNY NOLAND– SPADE FISH “HOW TO”
If you missed Buddy and Danny (Kings of the MonthlyRaffles) Noland’s “how to” presentation at the JuneMembership Meeting, you will have to make a long cast totop it for similar quality information about stalking, rigging, casting and hooking-up spade fish. The two holders of manyVAC record spade catches gave a most excellent and wellillustrated program about fishing for spades. The VACthanks the Noland Brothers for the time spent preparing forand delivering this educational program, as well as providingsome artificial baits for what proved to be an spirited andentertaining raffle.

THIS MONTHS WEB-SITE HOW TO –
HOW TO POST A MESSAGE IN THEFORUMS
Virginia Anger Club’s webmaster,
Johnny Wetlaufer, has prepared a
short lesson about how to post
messages in the forums section of
the VAC Website. Although some of
the postings in the past are fishing
reports worthy of a Pulitzer Prize,
short postings are also encouraged
to report catches, fishinginformation, items for sale and the
like. Johnny’s tutorial is located
further into the Angler.
NEXT TOURNAMENT UP,
SPADE FISH AND FLOUNDERThe next scheduled VAC tournament is
August and the species featured are
spade fish and flounder. The
tournament is August 1st.. The
presentation by Danny and Buddy
Noland at the June membership
meeting on how rig for and catch spade
fish was the first installment of a two
part series of informational
presentations for the tournament. The
second installment will be this month

Billy Nicar followed up the month on freshwater withsome high point catches. Billy had a 6-2 poundLargemouth Bass from Lake Prince on 4# spin worth306 points and the Species lead. The first of July, hecaught Rainbow Trout at Cedar Springs taking severalClub Records. Billy’s fly entry was a 4-8 on 4# flyworth 255 points. His Club Record entries were a 4-14 on 4# spin and a 4-2 on 6# general for the Rainbow’s.
Visiting Marathon, Florida the following weekend,Quinton and Billy Corbett released several largeTarpon for the non-local category. Quinton’s fish wasestimated at 85 pounds and Billy’s at 125 pounds. They were both caught with a crab on 20# general andwill be worth 150 points using the release basic weightof 45 pounds.
Wilson Nobles and Larry Allen were fishing themouth of the York River on June 13th. Wilson caughta 60-4 pound Cobia and weighed it at “Fish-On Tackle”in Deltaville. Wilson’s Cobia was caught using an eeland will take the Species and Largest leads for the year. Neither Larry nor Wilson turn in many fish each yearunless they are BIG!Fishing the surf at Hatteras Inlet, Hunter Wells turnedin a Spanish Mackerel caught on a Stingsilver. The
fish weighed 2-1 and was worth 103points. This Spanish will take the Species,Largest, Surf Division leads, and is alsoa Club Record. That’s getting the most“bang for the buck” for a single entry!Recently, Danny Noland, Ryan Noland,Jeff Doughty, Dean Winstead, andmyself fished the 4A Drydocks and TigerWrecks for Spadefish several times. Jeffhad a 3-12 on 4# using a clam for 162points. Ryan had the largest Spadefishwhich was 7-6 on 6# general. I caughtthe highest point entry which was a 6-12on 4# general for 270 points. We areseeing the larger fish on the Tiger, but
they are still managing to elude us. During the lastseveral weeks, we tagged and released over thirtySpadefish.
The summer fishing season has finally arrived! Over twenty entries have been turned in this month with
saltwater taking the lead over freshwater.
Billy Nicar had a nice 22-0 Dolphin off Hatteras the 4th ofJune, but a few days later, the June 7th weekend was even better.
Jamie Pitts, his son Justin, and Tony Horsley were catchinglarge Red Drum that weekend at the CBBT. Jamie caught a43-0 pounder, Justin a 50-0 pounder and Tony a 58 pound RedDrum worth 305 points. Tony will take the Largest and Speciesleads for Red Drum. Bernie Skydanek’s 59-0 Club Record on20# is still intact! Justin, age 13, will take the lead for theYouth Award with 263 points. Great catch Justin! All theDrum were caught on 20 pound line using crab for bait.
That same weekend, Mickey Kodroff and Jim Sheffield werefishing the deep water off Oregon Inlet and landed several fish. Mickey entered a 24 pound Amberjack on 12 fly using aGallasch popper. Bill’s poppers have fooled many anAmberjack over the years. Mickey’s fish will lead the SaltwaterFly Division and also the Largest of Species. Later thatafternoon, Mickey also landed a Club Record Blueline Tilefishon 40# braid which will be entered in the new 50# Braidcategory.

Scott Johnston, “the elder”, has been fishing the Piankatank River recentlywith George Atkinson. Scott has caught a nice 1-3 Croaker on 6# fly for133 points. I’m sure the Clouser was hand tied by Scott, himself!
Last but not least, Matt Balazik has been pounding the waters of the Chickahominy River lately. Matt caught a 1-9 Chain Pickerel on2# spin, a 0-8 Sunfish on 2# fly, and his best entry being a 2-4 Largemouth Bass on 2# fly worth 187 points using a topwater popper.Nice variety!

Jumbo flounder action will peak in mid summer and we have atournament just in time to accommodate the serious flounderpounders. Popular spots for large summer flounder include thebuoy 36 area and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. To makethings more interesting we have added spadefish as a secondspecies this year. The spades will be oriented to structure andmost people use small pieces of fresh clam for bait. The tournamentis open to all Virginia waters.
We will recognize three places for heaviest weight fish andthree places for highest point fish. First = 3 pts. Second = 2 pts.Third = 1 pt. These points will apply towards the annual SaltwaterTournament Angler of the Year competition.
A fish can be entered by weight or points (angler must declarewhich category) but not both ways for 1 fish. One angler canenter up to two fish of each species so that makes a potentialof 4 entries for this 2 species event. It is possible to win bothweight and points divisions by entering 2 different fish of eachspecies.
Call in entries within 24 hours from end of tournament toAngling Activities Chairman Parks Rountrey 804-349-6001. Youcan not change the entry category once you have registeredit with the Chairman.
You do not need to fill out cards. Tournament First PlaceAwards for weight and points = Anglers Choice: Traditionalcup, $40 Greentop gift certificate or a VAC Banquet ticket.Contact Chairman to confirm event if weather is questionable.

VAC WEBSITE FORUMS – DISCUSSION AT JULY MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Some questions of the current visibility of two Forums on the VAC Website were discussed by the VAC LeadershipTeam. The Team is seeking opinions of Members about the current visibility and if changes are felt to be needed. President VicSkakandy will collect your opinions and ideas at the JuLY Membership Meeting.
Fishing Reports:
The Fishing Forum is visible to anyone who logs onto www.virginiaanglersclub.com. Any fishing information posted, therefore, becomes “public knowledge” and can be used by anyone logged on. There is some feeling that informationabout where the action is hot, etc. should stay within the VAC and, therefore, be kept in the Members (only) sectionof the Website. For instance, if a member posts some specific location information about a specific bite, is there thepossibility that a lot of non-members may show up at the hot spot and cause it to be crowded to the point that it isunfishable. Where do you come out on this question? Should the Fishing Forum be open to VAC Members only forposting and for reading? Maybe there is a way to post catch information to show the club is an active anglingclub while protecting the other related information that may best left to Member’s eyes only.
For Sale Forum:
The Forums section of the VAC Website has a For Sale Forum on which items for sale can be posted. The For SaleForum is currently visible only to members who have set up a Forum Account. When an account holder clicks on“Forums”, the For Sale Forum comes up in the list of Forums. The question arose should items for sale be visible tothe public? Should the public be able to post items for sale? Are the best interests of Members served by having theFor Sale section of Forums only available to Members for posting items for sale and for contacting the seller about theitem?
Postings in the Forums Section:
All forums require a pre-approved account to post messages. Currently only VAC members are approved for forumaccounts. Should we allow non-members the ability to obtain a forum account and post comments? Is the possibilityof posting of comments contrary or damaging to the mission of the VAC a significant enough possibility that postingshould be limited to account holders?
Please think about these questions. Maybe you have opinions of other changes that need to be made in the Forumssection of the VAC Website. The Leadership Team wants the features of the website to be set up to best serve theneeds of the VAC and the interests of the Membership. Vic will spend a few minutes seeking Forums related opinionsat the June Membership Meeting. Thanks in advance for your helping the Leadership Team.
