Dear Paw's Corner: My1-year-old dog,"Clemente," gets extreme-ly anxious whenever Ileave home. He barksnonstop, as my neighborhas mentioned repeated-ly. I put him in his cratewhenever I leave, but itdoesn't matter if I'm gonefor 20 minutes or all day- he will not stop barkinguntil I get home.

I tried leaving him outof the crate when I go outfor short periods, butthen he just barks, clawsat the door and scattersmy shoes everywhere. What else can I do? -Beth N., Brooklyn, NY

Dear Beth: Reducingyour pet's anxiety whenyou leave home can be re-ally tough. Regardless ofhis history - whether hewas a shelter adoption or

brought home from a lit-ter - Clemente's percep-tion is that you are leav-ing, and he doesn't knowwhy or for how long. Howwill he eat if you're gonefor days? Why won't youtake him with you? A lotof things are runningthrough his mind.

Even if you just go outof sight for a few minutes, some pets get really wor-ried. I've come out of thebathroom to find my dogand cats clustered to-gether, staring up at memutely with eyes thatseem to say, "Where didyou GO?"

There are many thingsto try, all of which involvereassuring Clemente thatyou will come home. Con-tact a trainer who spe-cializes in easing anxiety(Clemente's vet may havesome good recommenda-tions). Most importantly,

do it soon. Right now he'sgot some anxiety, butthat could develop intomore destructive behav-iors. Now is the time toreally build that relation-

ship with your dog andhelp him feel more confi-dent that you are alwaysthere for him.

While many cyclists fo-cus on safety and strictlyadhere to the rules of theroad, some cyclists en-gage in behavior that maygo against the flow of traf-fic or is downright dan-gerous. The League ofAmerican Bicyclists re-minds riders thatwhether in a car or on abike, the rules and rightsremain the same. It’s nec-essary to obey traffic sig-nals and stop signs. Also,

ride with traffic and usethe right-most lane head-ed in the direction youare going. To prevent in-juries, make your inten-tions clear to others bysignaling when making aturn. by Elizabeth A. Tomlin“This is only the second

time in 25 years we havehad rain like this for Nel-

liston Days,” commentedLarry Alkinburgh.

That's a pretty good av-erage! And even though

the crowd may have beena little thin, there wasstill a good turnout forthe two days, considering

the weather.Sandy Wall of Palatine

Bridge knitted hats, which she sold in a ven-dor's booth at the event.

“I did pretty good onSaturday,” she remarked.“It rained for awhile, butit was beautiful later inthe afternoon and therewere quite a few peoplethat came out. I soldquite a few hats.”

Although the rain keptsome folks away, the

same people that havebeen volunteering at theevent all of these yearsstill traveled to be there. And to some it was almostlike a family reunion.

“My whole family ishere!” said a delightedLynda Conrad. Conrad isone of the two remainingfoundation members ofthe Nelliston Activities

Council (fondly known asNAC) and was surround-ed by family membersfrom Florida to Pennsyl-vania to Nelliston.

Barbara Alkinburgh, who will be celebrating her91st birthday in a fewshort weeks, is the secondof the two remaining mem-bers. Although Alkinburghsays she is officially retiredfrom NAC, she was still onhand over the weekend toview the festivities.

“It was a disappointmentbecause it was raining andsome people didn't showup. Even the village garagesales weren't as busy asthey usually are.”

However, Alkinburghsays she is thankful for thepeople that did show up.

She commented on themany volunteers whofaithfully travel long dis-tances every year to helpout at the event.

“Brian Conrad comesfrom Florida every year,

You would think there would be no trouble fi nd-ing information on vintage or antique woodworking tools on the “information super highway”. However, although there was an overabundance of images of tools including calipers, gauges, chisels and the like, I did not come across any photos or explanations of this week’s Whatchamacallit in particular.

The closest item I found online is the Robert Sorby model number 970 sizing tool. Manufactured in the UK of modern materials it is sold without a handle.

According to the information I was given on our siz-ing tool or woodturners gauge as it was also called, it was used for sizing repetition work on the lathe.

A small chisel-shaped cutter is fi xed to a shank with a screwed clamp and could be adjusted to any required distance from the hook end. In use, the tool was situated so the end of the hook bore down against the turning wood, and by bearing down on the han-dle, the chisel point made contact with the wood.

Do you have your own Whatchamacallit? Send a photo and short description to [email protected] or call Colleen at 518-673-0145

by Larry CoxPaint by Number

Q: I have heard that paint-by-number pictures from the 1950shave become collectible. I have sev-eral that my daughter did that arequite good. Are they salable? -- Al-ice, St. Johnsville, New York

A: "Paint-by-Number" pictureswere originally produced by MaxKlein, an engineer and owner of theDetroit-based Palmer Paint Compa-ny, and Dan Roberts, a commercialartist. The first examples issued in1951 under the Craft Masters brandwere an immediate success. Eachkit had a picture board with lightblue or gray-lined areas that werenumbered to match certain colors.

In recent years, many of thesepaintings have popped up in shopsand at antique malls, mostly pricedin the $25-$35 range. During the1950s and '60s, more than 12 mil-

lion of the kits were sold.Q: During the 1950s, my mom

was a big fan of Don McNeill andhis Breakfast Club, a network radioprogram. She purchased his book, which was published in 1953.Would it be of interest to a collec-tor? -- Scott, Arvada, Colorado

A: "Don McNeill's Breakfast Club"was broadcast from Chicago anddebuted in 1933. It continued until1968, making it the longest-run-ning network radio show ever. Theprogram was a blend of poetry, an-ecdotes, guest stars, interviewsand even occasional marchesaround the breakfast table. Theshow was essentially spontaneousand unrehearsed, with McNeillclosing each program with his sig-noff tag: "Be good to yourself."

While "Don McNeill's BreakfastClub" was extremely popular as aradio program, when an attempt

was made to adapt it to televisionin 1954, it failed to capture thesame audience.

McNeill published several books, including "Don's Other Life" in1944, "Don McNeill's BreakfastClub" (1953), "Twenty Years ofCorn" (1953) and at least 10 edi-tions of his yearbooks. The year-books often sell for about $20 each, with the other three publicationsgenerally priced in the $15-$35range. Prices can vary due to condi-tion and demand. For example, Mc-Neill memorabilia is especially pop-ular in Chicago, which means pricesin Chicagoland can be higher thanin other parts of the country.

One of the better references is"Hake's Price Guide to CharacterToys" by Ted Hake and publishedby House of Collectibles.

by Keith Roach, M.D.If Walking Hurts, Try

Water ExerciseDear Dr. Roach: I just

wanted to touch basewith you about my dia-betes. While my weighthas stayed stable around320 pounds, my sugarnumbers have been in-creasingly hard to keep inline. I've maxed out onthe oral medications weuse. My latest A1c was

6.6. The doctor says itshould be under 6 andthat our next step is in-sulin. He asked me to tryto lose 50 pounds overthe next six months in or-der to get my sugar backunder control.

I agree and want it tohappen. I'm countingcalories and cutting outcarbs, and have startedwalking in the morning. Iknow I can't run, with no

discs in my bottom threevertebrae. But even walk-ing is hard. I walk untilmy leg goes numb, but Idon't think it will beenough, and I may noteven be able to keep thatup. Even walking easymakes my hip hurt andleg go numb after about20 minutes. -- S.A.

Answer: I am surprisedby your doctor's advice, because it's very clearnow (from the ACCORDstudy) that an A1c (ameasure of average sugar

levels) of 7 percent haslower overall risks thanan A1c of 6 percent forsomeone like you.

Exercise is always good, and my first thought iswater. Getting in a poolwill take pressure offyour back, and youshould be able to swim, walk in the water or dowater-exercise classes toyour heart's content.
