IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

DAY 1 Tuesday 9 October 2018 ChicagoWe depart Australia, arriving in Chicago in the afternoon. Upon arrival we transfer to our hotel followed by welcome drinks in our hotel.

DAY 2 Wednesday 10 October 2018 ChicagoThis morning we will enjoy a sightseeing tour of Chicago with a local guide. Chicago is the third largest city in the USA. During our tour we will travel down the Magnificent Mile, a part of Michigan Avenue where exclusive shops line the wide boulevard. We see the Fourth Presbyterian Church, built in the Gothic Revival style and the 100 storey-high, John Hancock Centre. The afternoon is free to enjoy the Art Institute, a River Cruise, Millennium Park and many other attractions.

DAY 3 Thursday 11 October 2018 ChicagoWe travel by coach to spend the day in suburban Chicago, starting with the 1889-1909 Home & Studio. Wright constructed the house for himself and his family while working for the Chicago firm of Adler and Sullivan. It is the oldest extant building attributed wholly to Wright. This will be followed by a tour of the area surrounding the Home & Studio which contains the world’s largest concentration of Wright-designed structures, followed by a visit to the 1904 Unity Temple, the ‘first significant American architectural statement in poured concrete’. We finish the day by visiting Wright’s 1906 Robie House which is considered his masterpiece of the Prairie Style.

DAY 4 Friday 12 October 2018 MilwaukeeThis morning we depart Chicago for Milwaukee. On route we visit Wright’s exquisite 1936 S C Johnson Administration Building (often termed the Johnson Wax Building) in Racine. The ‘great workroom’ has been called one of Wright’s ‘most astonishing places’. We can now visit the recently-opened Research Tower, Wright’s first cantilevered high rise structure. In the afternoon we visit Wright’s Wingspread, the 1936 H J Johnson house that nestles in 16 hectares on Wind Point, a peninsula on the western shore of Lake Michigan near Racine. The house in now used as a conference centre and the visit is subject to there being no conferences on this day.

DAY 5 Saturday 13 October 2018 MadisonFirstly, we visit Santiago Calatrava’s 2001 Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum – Calatrava’s buildings located over the lake reflects his early training in structural engineering and study of skeletal forms in fine art. This art museum is a triumph with striking shapes reaching above the gallery making iconic forms on the skyline. The wings of the brise soleil can move and, when open, the structure appears, from the city side, to be a giant gull about to take flight above the lake. Subject to the agreement of the private owner, we then visit Wright’s delightful Jacobs1 house in Madison. We then move through the Wisconsin countryside to Spring Green to visit Wright’s 1911 Taliesin residence, later the summer home of the Taliesin Fellowship. Taliesin, which rests on the brow of a hill overlooking the Wisconsin River, has been described as Wright’s autobiography in wood and stone.

DAY 6 Sunday 14 October 2018 GaryWe travel by coach to Plano to visit Mies van der Rohe’s 1951 Farnsworth House, one of the most famous examples of modernist domestic architecture.

DAY 7 Monday 15 October 2018 ColumbusIn the morning we travel to West Lafayette to visit Wright’s 1954 Samara House (also known as the John E. Christian House) – a pristine example of Wright’s Usonian architecture. Upon arrival in Columbus we visit Zaherako’s Ice Cream Parlour, a wonderful olde world experience.

DAY 8 Tuesday 16 September 2018 ColumbusThis morning we visit Eero Saarinen’s delightful 1957 Miller House for a tour of the house and 5 hectare garden. The house is one of the most significant examples of modern domestic architecture in the world. Our afternoon visit is the 1964 North Christian Church Columbus, also by Saarinen.

TOUR ITINERARY

THE TOUR AT A GLANCE… This guided tour, led by Sydney Architect Malcolm Carver, provides a unique opportunity for architects and others interested in visiting the great modern and contemporary buildings of the 20th and 21st century in the USA. The tour includes the most outstanding top ten Frank Lloyd Wright buildings of our previous tours. Whilst Wright was a powerful influence on the Twentieth Century and its architecture, we parallel the study of Wright with major projects of 10 significant contemporary architects designated by the American Institute of Architects. They include Richard Meier, Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, Mies van der Rohe, Steven Holl, Santiago Calatrava, Norman Foster and Frank Gehry. All of whom have won either the AIA Gold Medal or are Pritzker Architecture Prize Winners or both. We will therefore visit the very best of the best with the absolute highlights being Fallingwater, both Taliesin and Taliesin West, Johnson Wax Factory and Guggenheim Museum, all by Wright and more, then Fortaleza Hall by Foster, Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall, Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe, Glass House by Johnson and Milwaukee Art Museum by Santiago Calatrava. These destinations have considerable wow factors each day, seeing is believing, but we actually see much more of the great cities with many more gems too long to list. It’s the journey that’s fun and sharing it with like-minded people who all appreciate the outstanding architecture.
