Message from the Headteacher Our Collective Worship theme this term is Forgiveness In the Loop Thank you for your understanding this week with regard to the closure due to snow. Closing the school is never an easy decision especially when this is due to the weather that is unpredictable. The process of deciding, normally starts when weather warnings come through and connue late into the night. This then leads to a sleepless night, rising hourly to gaze out of the window. At St Leonards we use a risk benefit approach which means we assess if the benefits out weigh the risks? I have to consider the safety needs of our children, the community, of staff, many of whom have dependents, young and old and the wider possible impact on services, before the longer term educaonal needs. On this occasion my judgement has been that the risks were greater than the benefits so regreably closed the school for a day. Please take a look on page 5 for some of the quesons I consider before closing the school. Thank you so much for sharing some of your photos taken in the snow. We have loved seeing them. In the Loop

Thank you for your understanding this week with regard to the closure due to snow.

Closing the school is never an easy decision especially when this is due to the weather that is unpredictable.

The process of deciding, normally starts when weather warnings come through and continue late into the night. This then leads to a sleepless night, rising hourly to gaze out of the window.

At St Leonards we use a risk benefit approach which means we assess if the benefits out weigh the risks? I have to consider the safety needs of our children, the community, of staff, many of whom have dependents, young and old and the wider possible impact on services, before the longer term educational needs. On this occasion my judgement has been that the risks were greater than the benefits so regrettably closed the school for a day. Please take a look on page 5 for some of the questions I consider before closing the school.

Thank you so much for sharing some of your photos taken in the snow. We have loved seeing them.

We are very much looking forward to book day next Wednesday and seeing you all at parents evening on Tuesday and Thursday.

Book Week

Years 1 & 2 were engrossed with our story teller! He used instruments such as

drums and bells.

Ann Bryant (Author) was in school on Monday and worked with all year groups. She is the author of about 125 books and love writing about families, friendships, fun and most of all, fitting in.

DON’T FORGET OUR BOOK DAY IS THIS WEDNESDAY 7TH MARCH. We are looking

forward to seeing all the fantastic

costumes!

To close or not to close, That is the question………………? What do the weather warnings say? Do we have heat? Will the school be warm enough and meet minimum acce How severe is the weather based on our previous experience? Can I get to school safely and if not can my deputy and other senior staff? Is there be appropriate experience to manage safeguarding and health and safety on

site including qualified first aiders and paediatric first aiders? Can sufficient numbers of staff reach school safely to provide education? Can sufficient numbers of staff reach school to provide child care safely? Can families get to school safely? Has the road been gritted? Can staff, children and families safely walk? Can site staff grit paths (School grounds) and ensure safe passage in to school. When on site can we meet the needs of individual children safely? Is the site safe so large groups can move around safely, for instance if we had to evacu-

ate quickly? If we had to evacuate, would it be safe for our children to be outside for a sustained

period? Would children with specific conditions i.e. Asthma, be safe outside for sustained peri-

ods? Could the emergency services reach us quickly if necessary? Does the weather during the day pose a risk for children not being collected due to

families being delayed? Will staff be able to get home safely, considering too, that many have children who may

be sent home from school early? Does our school serve a community of families that work in essential services whereby

closing school has a negative impact on wider services i.e NHS staff? Could opening school ultimately mean we place other services under further pressure

by increasing traffic incidents when police have issued warnings not to travel?

Can we provide warm meals? Do we place our school under pressure of

criticism and injury claims?

This is just a little look in to the mind of our Headteacher and the questions she asks herself when making a snow day de-cision.
