In Text Citations

6th Grade research projectIn Text CitationsWhat are IN-TEXT CITATIONS?You have researched, you have paraphrased and taken notesnow its time to start thinking about your paper.

When you use an authors ideas in your paper you have to give them credit!

In addition to a works cited page you do an in-text citation, giving them credit within the body of your paper. What does it look like?Put the in-text citation in parenthesis ().

First put the authors last name, then the page number.

Ex: (OShei 17).

If there is no author, put the title of the article or website.

Ex: (Diana at Fifty 34).

For a website, there is no page number.

Ex: (Princess Diana Biography).Paraphrasing VS. Direct QuotesParaphrasing: Putting the authors ideas into YOUR OWN WORDSremember you have to change most of the words, not just a few!

Direct Quote: Taking the authors idea WORD FOR WORD.

BOTH OF THESE NEED TO HAVE A CITATION, NOT JUST DIRECT QUOTES!!!!Paraphrasing ExampleORIGINAL: The prince seemed to be seriously interested in Diana. The British people were interested too. If Charles married her, she could one day become queen.

PARAPHRASE: Not only was Prince Charles fascinated by Lady Diana Spencer, so were the people of England. She would become the Queen of England if she were to marry Prince Charles (OShei 14). Direct Quote ExampleDiana and Charles divorced in 1996. After her divorce, Princess Diana was no longer known as Her Royal Highness. However, she kept her title as Princess of Wales (OShei 24).

DONT FORGET THAT DIRECT QUOTES NEED TO HAVE QUOTATION MARKS!!!YOU MUST CITE EVERY IDEA THAT IS NOT YOUR OWN WITHIN YOUR PAPER WHETHER IT IS A DIRECT QUOTE OR PRAPHRASED!REMEMBER:
