Since being awarded the USA Cycling Professional Championships in 2006, Medalist Sports has partnered with the City and County of Greenville, as well as the Greenville Hospital System and the Palmetto Peloton Project (P3), in producing a world-class cycling event that has made a significant and positive contribution to the entire Greenville community.
Following a national bid process, Medalist Sports and the Greenville Community was awarded the return of the USA Cycling Professional Championships again in 2011 and 2012!

Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./Trek-Livestrong) became only the second professional athlete to win a USA Cycling professional time trial championship national title.
Presented by Duke Energy, the finish was the most most exciting in the five year history of this event, as Phinney edged Levi Leipheimer (Santa Rosa, Calif./Team RadioShack) by only 14 hundredths of a second.
“This is probably one of the biggest wins of my career,” stated Phinney after the finish. “I get to wear the jersey for the next full year – my first as a pro.”
Phinney completed the 20.7-mile powerful, rolling course with a winning time of 41:02.51, just ahead of the surging Leipheimer who finished in 41:02.65.

Phinney, son of 1991 pro road race national champion Davis Phinney and 1984 Olympic road race gold medalist Connie Carpenter, posted a course record opening lap time of 13.26.24; putting him a full 15 seconds ahead of Leipheimer.
The 2007 Tour de France time trial stage winner, Leipheimer would not let the youngster away that easily however, closing the gap to within eight seconds heading into the final lap. Much to the crowd’s delight, shortly after Phinney finished his third and final lap of the 6.9-mile course Leipheimer came charging into the finish chute posting a nearly identical time.

Benjamin King (North Garden, Va./Trek-Livestrong) pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in the 25-year history of the USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship. The 21-year-old held an early race break to win the 115-mile Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Road Race Championship and become the youngest rider to win the event against some of the sport’s top pros.
“We were going pretty hard at the beginning there,” said King. “Once I was solo I had nine minutes; I was thinking about a lot of motivators. I was praying pretty hard after Paris Mountain and my prayers got answered.” “The finishing circuits were awesome. Coming
through that start/finish line you could hear the roar. Greenville is a great place for nationals.”

King is the youngest athlete in the event’s 25-year history to win the professional road race national title. King's road race and Phinney's time trial win serve as a testament to the future of American cycling and USA Cycling's National Development Programs.
Thousands of fans lined the course for the finish as well as all of the day’s festivities, including 750 charity riders participating in the Stars-and-Stripes Challenge, more than 150 in the kid’s race and dozens contesting the U.S. Handcycling Series criterium.

As a week-end full of celebration, multiple special events were scheduled around the Time Trial and Road Race Championships, raising significant awareness and money for the Greenville Hospital System Cancer Center and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Over five years, the Stars and Stripes Challenge has raised over $525,000.

Your combined efforts directly help elevate the competition and ultimately handcycling as a sport. Your work and support touches each athlete and their family competing in the US and finally creates a foundation that international success is built on.
