The San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute currently offers In-Service courses in addition to a Basic Public Safety Academy and Reserve Academy. The following pages include information on course titles, dates, times, location, registration, course content, prerequisites, corequisites, certification, tuition/credit, equipment/supplies required, dress code and reservations. COURSE RESERVATIONS can be made by contacting either Margaret Hodges at [email protected] or Myrna Perez at [email protected] as indicated on course information sheet. Most course reservations are taken on a first come, first served basis. An email of your class reservation will serve as your "Student Confirmation Notice". The San Diego Community College District, as of Fall 2009, charges a course tuition fee of $26.00 per unit. California non-residents will be charged an additional fee of $190.00 per unit. Individuals not affiliated with a public safety agency will be charged a $17.00 medical insurance fee. Make checks payable to Miramar College. LODGING: Lodging is available at nearby hotel/motels. A list of hotel/motels is included in this booklet. Hotel rates are subject to change w/o prior notice. Ask for government rate. SPECIAL NOTE: Class hours are mandated by P.O.S.T. COURSE CONTENT: This course is designed to improve the student's skill and knowledge of advanced techniques used to determine the sequence of events that result in a traffic collision and how to properly document the available information. The students will have the opportunity to become proficient in the following areas: 1. Photography and photogrammetry. 2. Environment examinations and collision scene measurements. 3. Techniques for preparing scale diagrams. 4. Vehicle systems and vehicle related collision factors. 5. Human factors and mechanisms of injury. 6. Mathematics, time-position analysis and freefall analysis. 7. Legal aspects of collision investigation. OBJECTIVES: 1. To develop a relatively high degree of technical expertise in traffic collision investigation. 2. To recognize, interpret and prepare physical evidence for further use in collision reconstruction. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of the Intermediate Traffic Collision Investigation Course or equivalent & competency at college level algebra and trigonometry. CERTIFICATION: This course is certified (#2400 33610) under P.O.S.T. reimbursement Plan IV. Class hours are mandated by P.O.S.T. and full participation is required for certification. Completion certificates will be awarded.

TUITION/CREDIT: 3.5 lower division semester units will be awarded for completion of this course (AJ 305). Tuition is $91. Agencies / students can pay at the time of registration on the first day of class or the agency may be billed. California non-residents will

SUPPLIES: Students will need the following items: all templates and drawing equipment used during investigations, and engineer's scale, a screw type compass, flexcurve (drawing instrument), clipboard, TI-30 calculator, a digital SLR camera with 50mm equivalent lens and memory card may be substituted for the 35mm camera and film (35mm SLR camera with 50mm lens, one 24 exposure roll of 35mm film 200 ASA print), tripod, cable release, electronic flash unit with sync cord (hot shoe only is not acceptable), spare batteries for flash unit, and flashlight. OPTIONAL SUPPLIES: 28mm lens, macro lens or other close-up equipment, beam compass. If students have a copy of the textbook, Basic Collision Analysis and Scene Documentation they should bring it to class, otherwise a loaner copy will be provided for them. No more than two students will be able to share camera equipment. DRESS: Dress is business casual. No shorts, jeans or open toed sandals or shoes. Outside training (10 hours) will be conducted regardless of weather conditions. PARKING: Parking is available in the Student Parking Lot (upper lot) at Miramar College. Topics that will be covered include: the handling of emergency calls, an overview of Criminal Law, EEO, Ethics, Critical Incidents, Child and Elder Abuse, Hate Crimes, Gangs, and Stress Management Techniques. Emphasis will be placed on practical exercises and problem solving to build skills and obtain knowledge necessary for an entry level Emergency Services Dispatcher. PREREQUISITE: A P.O.S.T. certified 120 hour class restricted to dispatchers with two years or less experience. CERTIFICATION: This course is certified (# 4690 30900) under P.O.S.T. reimbursement Plan IV. Class hours are mandated by P.O.S.T. and full participation is required for certification. Completion certificates will be awarded.

COURSE CONTENT: This course is designed to prepare newly promoted sergeants in the duties and responsibilities of a first-line supervisor in a law enforcement agency. Students will be led through facilitated discussions exploring the various aspects of supervision as well as legal responsibilities associated with the new position. PREREQUISITE: Completion of a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy. CERTIFICATION: This course is certified (# 4690 00400) under P.O.S.T. reimbursement Plan IV. COURSE CONTENT: This course is a technical course designed for officers using radar for speed enforcement other traffic duties. The course provides instruction on legal and technical issues of moving and stationary radar, set-up and testing of equipment, detecting effects on radar by sources other than target vehicles and court preparation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the following: 1. The set-up, testing and operation of the equipment 2. Target identification, 3. Related Vehicle Code and Court Decisions, 4. Sources effecting radar, 5. Visual speed and range determination 6. Court testimony

PREREQUISITE: Completion of a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy. Prior radar use or observation is helpful but not mandatory. Ability to estimate the speed of target vehicles within 5 mph from a stationary and moving vehicle is required for successful completion.
